The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

$μ$TRISTAN

The ultra-cold muon technology developed for the muon $g-2$ experiment at J-PARC provides a low emittance $μ^+$ beam which can be accelerated and used for realistic collider experiments. We consider the possibility of new collider experiments by accelerating the $μ^+$ beam up to 1 TeV. Allowing the $μ^+$ beam to collide with a high intensity $e^-$ beam at the TRISTAN energy, $E_{e^-}= 30$ GeV, in the storage ring with the same size as TRISTAN (the circumference of 3 km), one can realize a collider experiment with the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s = 346$ GeV, which allows productions of the Higgs bosons through the vector boson fusion processes. We estimate the deliverable luminosity with existing accelerator technologies to be at the level of $5 \times 10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, with which the collider can be a good Higgs boson factory. The $μ^+ μ^+$ colliders up to $\sqrt s = 2$ TeV are also possible by using the same storage ring. They have a capability of producing the superpartner of the muon up to TeV masses.

Missing final state puzzle in the monopole-fermion scattering

It has been known that when a charged fermion scatters off a monopole, the fermion in the $s$-wave component must flip its chirality, i.e., fermion number violation must happen. This fact has led to a puzzle; if there are two or more flavors of massless fermions, any superposition of the fermion states cannot be the final state of the $s$-wave scattering as it is forbidden by conservation of the electric and flavor charges. The unitary evolution of the state vector, on the other hand, requires some interpretation of the final states. We solve the puzzle by finding new particle excitations in the monopole background, where multi-fermion operators exhibit condensation. The particles are described as excitations of closed-string configurations of the condensates.

Is $N=2$ Large?

We study $θ$ dependence of the vacuum energy for the 4d SU(2) pure Yang-Mills theory by lattice numerical simulations. The response of topological excitations to the smearing procedure is investigated in detail, in order to extract topological information from smeared gauge configurations. We determine the first two coefficients in the $θ$ expansion of the vacuum energy, the topological susceptibility $χ$ and the first dimensionless coefficient $b_2$, in the continuum limit. We find consistency of the SU(2) results with the large $N$ scaling. By analytic continuing the number of colors, $N$, to non-integer values, we infer the phase diagram of the vacuum structure of SU(N) gauge theory as a function of $N$ and $θ$. Based on the numerical results, we provide quantitative evidence that 4d SU(2) Yang-Mills theory at $θ= π$ is gapped with spontaneous breaking of the CP symmetry.

From 3d dualities to hadron physics

When one of the space-time dimension is compactified on $S^1$, the QCD exhibits the chiral phase transition at some critical radius. When we further turn on a background $θ$ term which depends on the $S^1$ compactified coordinate, a topological ordered phase appears at low energy via the winding of $θ$. We discuss what kind of theories can describe the physics near the critical point by requiring the matching of topological field theories in the infrared. As one of the possibilities, we propose a scenario where the $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons form a $U(N_f)$ gauge theory near the critical point. In the phase where the chiral symmetry is restored, they become the dual gauge boson of the gluon related by the level-rank duality between the three dimensional gauge theories, $SU(N)_{N_f}$ and $U(N_f)_{-N}$.

Throwing away antimatter via neutrino oscillations during the reheating era

The simplest possibility to explain the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is to assume that radiation is created asymmetrically between baryons and anti-baryons after the inflation. We propose a new mechanism of this kind where CP-violating flavor oscillations of left-handed leptons in the reheating era distribute the lepton asymmetries partially into the right-handed neutrinos while net asymmetry is not created. The asymmetry stored in the right-handed neutrinos is later washed out by the lepton number violating decays, and it ends up with the net lepton asymmetry in the Standard Model particles, which is converted into the baryon asymmetry by the sphaleron process. This scenario works for a range of masses of the right-handed neutrinos while no fine-tuning among the masses is required. The reheating temperature of the Universe can be as low as $O(10)$~TeV if we assume that the decays of inflatons in the perturbative regime are responsible for the reheating. For the case of the reheating via the dissipation effects, the reheating temperature can be as low as $O(100)$~GeV.

$N_f=1+2$ mass dependence of the topological susceptibility

A massless up quark has long been proposed as a solution to the strong CP problem. While this solution is sometimes thought to have been excluded, it is actually still ill-defined. In this work, we study the mass dependence of the physical observable $χ_t$, the topological susceptibility. Assigning an unphysically large value to the down mass allows to be more sensitive to the non-perturbative effects behind the $m_u=0$ ambiguity. Preliminary results are presented for four masses of clover fermions.

Enhanced Higgs Mass in Compact Supersymmetry

The current LHC results make weak scale supersymmetry difficult due to relatively heavy mass of the discovered Higgs boson and the null results of new particle searches. Geometrical supersymmetry breaking from extra dimensions, Scherk-Schwarz mechanism, is possible to accommodate such situations. A concrete example, the Compact Supersymmetry model, has a compressed spectrum ameliorating the LHC bounds and large mixing in the top and scalar top quark sector with $|A_t|\sim 2m_{\tilde{t}}$ which radiatively raises the Higgs mass. While the zero mode contribution of the model has been considered, in this paper we calculate the Kaluza-Klein tower effect to the Higgs mass. Although such contributions are naively expected to be as small as a percent level for 10 TeV Kaluza-Klein modes, we find the effect significantly enhances the radiative correction to the Higgs quartic coupling by from 10 to 50 %. This is mainly because the top quark wave function is pushed out from the brane, which makes the top mass depend on higher powers in the Higgs field. As a result the Higgs mass is enhanced up to 15 GeV from the previous calculation. We also show the whole parameter space is testable at the LHC run II.

MSSM without a free parameter

It is often argued that the minimal supersymmetric standard model has O(100) free parameters and the generic parameter region is already excluded by the null observation of the flavor and CP violating processes as well as the constraints from the LHC experiments. This situation naturally leads us to consider the case where all the dangerous soft supersymmetry breaking terms such as the scalar masses and scalar couplings are absent, while only the unified gaugino mass term and the mu term are non-vanishing at the grand unification scale. We revisit this simple situation taking into account the observed Higgs boson mass, 125 GeV. Since the gaugino mass and the mu term are fixed in order to explain the Higgs boson and the Z boson masses, there is no free parameter left in this scenario. We find that there are three independent parameter sets exist including ones which have not been discussed in the literature. We also find that the abundance of the dark matter can be explained by relic gravitinos which are non-thermally produced as decay products of the SUSY particles while satisfying constraints from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We discuss the effects of the gravity mediation which generically give contribution to the soft terms of the order of the gravitino mass. It turns out that newly found parameter set is preferable to explain the Higgs boson mass as well as the gravitino dark matter while satisfying the constraints from the electric dipole moments of the electron and the nucleon.

Primordial Lepton Oscillations and Baryogenesis

The baryon asymmetry of the Universe should have been produced after the inflation era. We consider the possibility that the asymmetry is generated by the flavor oscillations in the reheating process after inflation, so that the baryon asymmetry is realized already at the beginning of the radiation dominated era. In the seesaw model, we show that the propagators of the left-handed leptons generically have flavor mixings in the thermal background, that can generate flavor-dependent lepton asymmetry through the $CP$ violation in the oscillation phenomena. The flavor dependent rates for the wash-out process can leave the net asymmetry today.

Lepton flavor violating $Z$-boson couplings from non-standard Higgs interactions

The Standard Model predicts that the Higgs boson couples to the fermions in the mass eigenstates. We consider the effects of lepton flavor violating (LFV) $Z$ boson couplings in the case where the Higgs boson has flavor non-diagonal Yukawa interactions with the muon and the tau lepton generated from physics beyond the Standard Model. We list the formulae of the couplings of the effective interactions among the $τ$ lepton, the muon and the $Z$ boson. Using these formulae, we calculate the branching fractions of various leptonic and hadronic LFV $τ$ decays, and the LFV $Z$ boson decay: $Z\to τμ$. Although the $Z$-boson contributions to LFV tau decays cannot be ignored in terms of the counting of operator dimensions or chirality flipptings, it turns out that they are not very significant for $τ\to3μ$ and $τ\toμρ$ decays. We also calculate the branching fractions of the processes, $τ\to μπ$, $τ\to μη^{(\prime)}$ and $τ\toμa_1$, which are dominated by the $Z$-boson exchanges due to the spin and the parity of the hadrons.

Topology in QCD and the axion abundance

The temperature dependence of the topological susceptibility in QCD, chi_t, essentially determines the abundance of the QCD axion in the Universe, and is commonly estimated, based on the instanton picture, to be a certain negative power of temperature. While lattice QCD should be able to check this behavior in principle, the temperature range where lattice QCD works is rather limited in practice, because the topological charge is apt to freezes at high temperatures. In this work, two exploratory studies are presented. In the first part, we try to specify the temperature range in the quenched approximation. Since our purpose here is to estimate the range expected in unquenched QCD through quenched simulations, hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) algorithm is employed instead of heatbath algorithm. We obtain an indication that unquenched calculations of chi_t encounter the serious problem of autocorrelation already at T~2Tc or even below with the plain HMC. In the second part, we revisit the axion abundance. The absolute value and the temperature dependence of chi_t in real QCD can be significantly different from that in the quenched approximation, and is not well established above the critical temperature. Motivated by this fact and precedent arguments which disagree with the conventional instanton picture, we estimate the axion abundance in an extreme case where chi_t decreases much faster than the conventional power-like behavior. We find a significant enhancement of the axion abundance in such a case.

Neutrinoful Universe

The Standard Model of particle physics fails to explain the important pieces in the standard cosmology, such as inflation, baryogenesis, and dark matter of the Universe. We consider the possibility that the sector to generate small neutrino masses is responsible for all of them; the inflation is driven by the Higgs field to break $B-L$ gauge symmetry which provides the Majorana masses to the right-handed neutrinos, and the reheating process by the decay of the $B-L$ Higgs boson supplies the second lightest right-handed neutrinos whose CP violating decays produce $B-L$ asymmetry, a la, leptogenesis. The lightest right-handed neutrinos are also produced by the reheating process, and remain today as the dark matter of the Universe. In the minimal model of the inflaton potential, one can set the parameter of the potential by the data from CMB observations including the BICEP2 and the Planck experiments. In such a scenario, the mass of the dark matter particle is predicted to be of the order of PeV. We find that the decay of the PeV right-handed neutrinos can explain the high-energy neutrino flux observed at the IceCube experiments if the lifetime is of the order of $10^{28}$ s.

Partially Composite Dark Matter

In a class of theories where the Higgs field emerges as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson, it is often assumed that interactions to generate the top Yukawa coupling provide the Higgs potential as well. Such a scenario generically requires a little cancellation in the leading contribution to the Higgs potential, and the electroweak scale is generated by the balance between the leading and the subleading contributions. We, instead, consider the possibility that the contribution from the dark matter particle balances against that from the top quark. The thermal relic of the new particle explains the abundance of dark matter in a consistent region of the parameter space, and the direct detection is found to be promising.

Gravitino thermal production revisited and a new cosmological scenario of gauge mediation

We present a new scenario of gravitino dark matter which is compatible with the thermal leptogenesis. We confirm by an explicit calculation in supergravity that the relic abundance of thermally produced gravitino becomes insensitive to the reheating temperature once the temperature of the Universe exceeds the mass scale of the messenger fields. In such a situation, the correct baryon to dark matter ratio can be obtained by thermal leptogenesis when the reheating temperature after inflation is high enough. We demonstrate in a concrete model of gauge mediation that the correct abundance of gravitino and baryon asymmetry can be reproduced by considering the late-time entropy production from the decay of the SUSY-breaking pseudo-moduli field. The scenario is realized when the gravitino mass is 100 MeV lesssim m_{3/2} lesssim 1 GeV, and the messenger mass scale is 10^6 GeV lesssim M_{mess} lesssim 10^9 GeV.

Minimal Dilaton Model

We construct a minimal calculable model of a light dilaton based on the scenario where only top and Higgs sectors are involved in a quasiconformal dynamics. The model consistently accommodates the electroweak precision tests even when the Higgs boson is very heavy, thereby allowing one to consider the possibility that the particle at around 125GeV, discovered at the LHC experiments, is identified as the light dilaton rather than the Higgs boson. We find that the current LHC data allow distinct parameter regions where the observed particle is either mostly the Higgs boson or the dilaton.

Phenomenology of Partially Composite Standard Model

We propose a model to describe the low energy physics of partially composite Standard Model, in which the electroweak sector in the Standard Model is weakly coupled to some strong dynamics. The vector resonances in the strong sector are introduced as the effective degrees of freedom, W' and Z', which mixes with the W and Z bosons through the electroweak symmetry breaking. Through the coupling to the strong sector, the Standard Model Higgs boson becomes partially composite, and its properties are modified. We study the constraints from the electroweak precision data and direct searches of W' and Z' at the LHC expriments, and discuss the effects on the production/decay properties of the Higgs boson.

Quark confinement via magnetic color-flavor locking

The color-flavor locking phenomenon in the magnetic picture can be the microscopic description of the quark confinement in QCD. We demonstrate it in an N=2 supersymmetric SU(Nc)xSU(Nc) quiver gauge theory coupled to Nf flavors of quarks (Nf<Nc). This model reduces to SU(Nc) gauge theory with Nf flavors when the vacuum expectations value of the link field is much larger than the dynamical scales, and thus provides a continuous deformation of the N=2 supersymmetric QCD. We study a vacuum which survives upon adding a superpotential term to reduce to N=1 while preserving the vectorial SU(Nf) flavor symmetry. We find a region of the parameter space where the confinement is described by the Higgsing of a weakly coupled magnetic SU(Nf)xU(1) gauge theory. The Higgsing locks the quantum numbers of SU(Nf) magnetic color to those of SU(Nf) flavor symmetry, and thus the massive magnetic gauge bosons become the singlet and adjoint representations of the flavor group, i.e, the vector mesons. If the qualitative picture remains valid in non-supersymmetric QCD, one can understand the Hidden Local Symmetry as the magnetic dual description of QCD, and the confining string is identified as the vortex of vector meson fields.

Updated results for minimal dilaton model

Both the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC have reported the observation of the particle of mass around 125GeV which is consistent to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson, but with an excess of events beyond the SM expectation in the diphoton decay channel at each of them. There still remains room for a logical possibility that we are not seeing the SM Higgs but something else. Here we introduce the minimal dilaton model in which the LHC signals are explained by an extra singlet scalar of the mass around 125GeV that slightly mixes with the SM Higgs heavier than 600GeV. When this scalar has a vacuum expectation value well beyond the electroweak scale, it can be identified as a linearly realized version of a dilaton field. Though the current experimental constraints from the Higgs search disfavors such a region, the singlet scalar model itself still provides a viable alternative to the SM Higgs in interpreting its search results.

Cosmologically viable gauge mediation

Gauge mediation provides us with a complete picture of supersymmetry breaking and its mediation within the effective field theories, and thus allows us to discuss consistencies with low-energy particle physics as well as cosmological observations. We study in detail the cosmological evolution of the pseudo-modulus field in the supersymmetry breaking sector and also the production of the gravitinos in the early Universe in a simple (but a complete) model of gauge mediation. Under fairly reasonable assumptions, it is found that there exists a parameter region where dark matter of the Universe is explained by both thermally and non-thermally produced gravitinos, while the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is generated through the thermal leptogenesis.

Making confining strings out of mesons

The light mesons such as pi, rho, omega, f0, and a0 are possible candidates of magnetic degrees of freedom, if a magnetic dual picture of QCD exists. We construct a linear sigma model to describe spontaneous breaking of the magnetic gauge group, in which there is a stable vortex configuration of vector and scalar mesons. We numerically examine whether such a string can be interpreted as the confining string. By using meson masses and couplings as inputs, we calculate the tension of the string as well as the strength of the Coulomb force between static quarks. They are found to be consistent with those inferred from the quarkonium spectrum and the Regge trajectories of hadrons. By using the same Lagrangian, the critical temperature of the QCD phase transition is estimated, and a non-trivial flavor dependence is predicted. We also discuss a possible connection between the Seiberg duality and the magnetic model we studied.

Partially Composite Higgs in Supersymmetry

We propose a framework for natural breaking of electroweak symmetry in supersymmetric models, where elementary Higgs fields are semi-perturbatively coupled to a strong superconformal sector. The Higgs VEVs break conformal symmetry in the strong sector at the TeV scale, and the strong sector in turn gives important contributions to the Higgs potential, giving rise to a kind of Higgs bootstrap. A Higgs with mass $125\GeV$ can be accommodated without any fine tuning. A Higgsino mass of order the Higgs mass is also dynamically generated in these models. The masses in the strong sector generically violate custodial symmetry, and a good precision electroweak fit requires tuning of order $\sim 10%$. The strong sector has an approximately supersymmetric spectrum of hadrons at the TeV scale that can be observed by looking for a peak in the $WZ$ invariant mass distribution, as well as final states containing multiple $W$, $Z$, and Higgs bosons. The models also generically predict large corrections (either enhancement or suppression) to the $h \to \ga\ga$ width.

Hidden local symmetry and color confinement

The hidden local symmetry is a successful model to describe the properties of the vector mesons in QCD. We point out that if we identify this hidden gauge theory as the magnetic picture of QCD, a linearized version of the model simultaneously describes color confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. We demonstrate that such a structure can be seen in the Seiberg dual picture of a softly broken supersymmetric QCD. The model possesses exact chiral symmetry and reduces to QCD when mass parameters are taken to be large. Working in the regime of the small mass parameters, we show that there is a vacuum where chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken and simultaneously the magnetic gauge group is Higgsed. If the vacuum we find persists in the limit of large mass parameters, one can identify the rho meson as the massive magnetic gauge boson, that is an essential ingredient for color confinement.

On Supersymmetric Effective Theories of Axion

We study effective theories of an axion in spontaneously broken supersymmetric theories. We consider a system where the axion supermultiplet is directly coupled to a supersymmetry breaking sector whereas the standard model sector is communicated with those sectors through loops of messenger fields. The gaugino masses and the axion-gluon coupling necessary for solving the strong CP problem are both obtained by the same effective interaction. We discuss cosmological constraints on this framework.

Simplified Models for LHC New Physics Searches

This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.

Spectral-Function Sum Rules in Supersymmetry Breaking Models

The technique of Weinberg's spectral-function sum rule is a powerful tool for a study of models in which global symmetry is dynamically broken. It enables us to convert information on the short-distance behavior of a theory to relations among physical quantities which appear in the low-energy picture of the theory. We apply such technique to general supersymmetry breaking models to derive new sum rules.

Constraints on Scalar Phantoms

We update the constraints on the minimal model of dark matter, where a stable real scalar field is added to the standard model Lagrangian with a renormalizable coupling to the Higgs field. Once we fix the dark matter abundance, there are only two relevant model parameters, the mass of the scalar field and that of the Higgs boson. The recent data from the CDMS II experiment have excluded a parameter region where the scalar field is light such as less than about 50 GeV. In a large parameter region, the consistency of the model can be tested by the combination of future direct detection experiments and the LHC experiments.

Natural Supersymmetry at the LHC

If the minimal supersymmetric standard model is the solution to the hierarchy problem, the scalar top quark (stop) and the Higgsino should weigh around the electroweak scale such as 200 GeV. A low messenger scale, which results in a light gravitino, is also suggested to suppress the quantum corrections to the Higgs mass parameters. Therefore the minimal model for natural supersymmetry is a system with stop/Higgsino/gravitino whereas other superparticles are heavy. We study the LHC signatures of the minimal system and discuss the discovery potential and methods for the mass measurements.

SuperTopcolor

We consider a supersymmetric QCD with soft supersymmetry breaking terms as the dynamics for the electroweak symmetry breaking. We find various advantages compared to the non-supersymmetric models, such as a natural incorporation of the dynamical top-quark mass generation (the topcolor mechanism), the existence of a boson-pair condensation (the composite Higgs fields) and a large anomalous dimension of the composite operator to cure the flavor-changing-neutral-current and the S-parameter crises of the technicolor theories. The knowledge of the weakly coupled description (the Seiberg duality) enables us to perform perturbative computations in strongly coupled theories. Working in a large flavor theory where perturbative calculations are reliable in the dual description, one can find a stable vacuum with chiral symmetry breaking. The top/bottom quarks and also the Higgsinos obtain masses through a dynamically generated superpotential.

Tau polarization measurements at the LHC in supersymmetric models with a long-lived stau

Supersymmetry (SUSY) with a long-lived stau is an attractive scenario in the LHC experiments because one can directly observe stau tracks in each SUSY event, and thus precise measurements of SUSY particle masses are possible. In this scenario, we discuss the possibility to observe/measure parity violation in interactions among SUSY particles. Such a measurement will be important in determining spins and chiralities of SUSY particles. We use the last step of the cascade-decay chain: $χ^0\to\tildeττ\to\tildeτ(lν\barν)$, where the polarization of the tau lepton can be determined statistically by looking at the energy distribution of the final state lepton. Comparing with the theoretical formula of the neutralino differential decay width, one can extract the size of parity violation in the interaction vertices among the stau, the tau lepton and the neutralino. We perform a Monte Carlo simulation to see if the effect is visible at the LHC experiments.

Measurement of the Superparticle Mass Spectrum in the Long-Lived Stau Scenario at the LHC

In supersymmetric scenarios with a long-lived stau, the LHC experiments provide us with a great environment for precise mass measurements of superparticles. We study a case in which the mass differences between the lightest stau and other sleptons are about 10 GeV or larger, so that the decay products of heavier sleptons are hard enough to be detected. We demonstrate that the masses of neutralinos, sleptons, and squarks can be measured with a good accuracy.

On the model discriminating power of mu -> e conversion in nuclei

We assess the model discriminating power of a combined phenomenological analysis of mu -> e gamma and mu -> e conversion on different target nuclei, including the current hadronic uncertainties. We find that the theoretical uncertainties can be largely reduced by using input from lattice QCD and do not constitute a limiting factor in discriminating models where one or at most two underlying operators (dipole, scalar, vector) provide the dominant source of lepton flavor violation. Our results show that a realistic discrimination among underlying mechanisms requires a measurement of the ratio of conversion rates at the 5% level (two light nuclei) or at the 20% level (one light and one heavy nucleus). We have illustrated these main conclusions also in the context of a supersymmetric model.

Direct Mediation of Meta-Stable Supersymmetry Breaking

The supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory coupled to Nf matter fields in the fundamental representation has meta-stable vacua with broken supersymmetry when Nc < Nf < 3/2 Nc. By gauging the flavor symmetry, this model can be coupled directly to the standard model. We show that it is possible to make a slight deformation to the model so that gaugino masses are generated and the Landau pole problem can be avoided. The deformed model has simple realizations on intersecting branes in string theory, where various features of the meta-stable vacua are encoded geometrically as brane configurations.

Higgs-mediated muon-electron conversion process in supersymmetric seesaw model

We study the effect of the Higgs-exchange diagram for the lepton flavor violating muon-electron conversion process in nuclei in the supersymmetric seesaw model. The contribution is significant for a large value of tan beta and a small value of a neutral heavy Higgs boson mass, in which case the ratio of the branching ratios of B(mu N -> e N) / B(mu -> e gamma) is enhanced. We also show that the target atom dependence of the conversion branching ratio provides information on the size of the Higgs exchange diagram.

Detailed calculation of lepton flavor violating muon-electron conversion rate for various nuclei

The coherent muon-electron conversion rates in various nuclei are calculated for general lepton flavor violating interactions. We solve the Dirac equations numerically for the initial state muon and the final state electron in the Coulomb force, and perform the overlap integrals between the wave functions and the nucleon densities. The results indicate that the conversion branching ratio increases for a light nucleus up to the atomic number Z ~ 30, is largest for Z = 30 -- 60, and becomes smaller for a heavy nucleus with Z > (~ 60). We also discuss the uncertainty from the input proton and neutron densities. The atomic number dependence of the conversion ratio calculated here is useful to distinguish theoretical models with lepton flavor violation.

Small Dirac neutrino masses in supersymmetric grand unified theories

A simple mechanism to generate Dirac masses for the neutrinos in SU(5) supersymmetric grand unified theory is proposed. The tiny Dirac masses are induced by the small mixing between the Higgs fields and another superheavy fields. The mixing terms are obtained by the same mechanism as the mu-term generation of the order of the supersymmetry breaking scale, so that the mixing of order TeV / M_GUT \sim 10^{-13} is realized. We consider the lepton flavor violating processes in this model. The branching ratios are directly related to the neutrino oscillation parameters and we can predict the B(τ-> μγ) / B(μ-> e γ) ratio once the neutrino oscillation parameters are determined.

Top-Squark Study at a Future e^+e^- Linear Collider

We discuss a potential of studying the production and the decay of the lightest top squark (t-tilde_1) in the framework of the supersymmetric standard model at a future e^+e^- collider. In particular, we consider the process t-tilde_1 -> t chi^0_1 (with chi^0_1 being the lightest neutralino) followed by t -> bW. It is shown that, by the study of the angular distribution of the bottom quark (as well as the production cross section of the top squark), properties of chi_1^0 can be extracted. We also discuss that, if chi^0_1 is gaugino-like, the neutralino mixing parameters (i.e., the so-called mu-parameter and tan beta) may be constrained.
