Quantization-scheme-Independent Energy and Its Implications for Holographic Bounds

In holographic duality, the total energy of the dual field theory is obtained from the holographic renormalization, which depends not only on the bulk geometry but also on the choice of quantization schemes. We point out that the validity of several widely studied holographic inequalities -- including the AdS Penrose inequality, the late-time bound on entanglement entropy growth, and the growth-rate limits of CV and CA complexities -- depends on the choice of quantization schemes. Motivated by this issue, we introduce a modified total energy, which is still computed via holographic renormalization but the final value is independent of the choice of quantization schemes. We verify that this new ``total energy'' restores all these bounds to universal validity in the model of generalized free scalar field theory. Our results suggest that our modified total energy provides a more robust notion of energy when we talk about above inequalities in holographic settings.

Constraining the number of horizons with energy conditions

We show that the number of horizons of static black holes can be strongly constrained by energy conditions of matter fields. After a careful clarification on the "interior" of a black hole, we prove that if the interior of a static black hole satisfies strong energy condition or null energy condition, there is at most one non-degenerated inner Killing horizon behind the non-degenerated event horizon. Our result offers some universal restrictions on the number of horizons. Interestingly and importantly, it also suggests that matter not only promotes the formation of event horizon but also prevents the appearance of multiple horizons inside black holes. Furthermore, using the geometrical construction, we obtain a radially conserved quantity which is valid for general static spacetimes.

Extremal Charged Black Holes and Superradiantly Unstable Quasinormal Modes

It was recently shown that the extremal charged black holes in STU supergravity suffer from superradiant instability owing to the existence of the unstable (low-frequency) quasibound states associated with a charged massive scalar field. In this paper, we show numerically that for some charge configurations, these black holes can also excite the (higher-frequency) superradiantly unstable quasinormal modes. We find empirically that the unstable modes are closely related to having a volcano-shaped effective potential in the Schrödinger-like wave equation.

Interior Structure and Complexity Growth Rate of Holographic Superconductor from M-Theory

We study the interior dynamics of a top-down holographic superconductor from M-theory. The condense of the charged scalar hair necessarily removes the inner Cauchy horizon and the spacetime ends at a spacelike singularity. Although there is a smooth superconducting phase transition at the critical temperature, the onset of superconductivity is accompanied by intricate interior dynamics, including the collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge, the Josephson oscillations of the condensate, and the final Kasner singularity. We obtain analytically the transformation rule for the alternation of different Kasner epochs. Thanks to the nonlinear couplings of the top-down theory, there is generically a never-ending chaotic alternation of Kasner epochs towards the singularity. We compute the holographic complexity using both the complexity-action and the complexity-volume dualities. In contrast to the latter, the complexity growth rate from the complexity-action duality has a discontinuity at the critical temperature, characterizing the sudden change of the internal structure before and after the superconducting phase transition.

When null energy condition meets ADM mass

We give a conjecture on the lower bound of the ADM mass $M$ by using the null energy condition. The conjecture includes a Penrose-like inequality $3M\geqκ\mathcal{A}/(4π)+\sqrt{\mathcal{A}/4π}$ and the Penrose inequality $ 2M\geq\sqrt{\mathcal{A}/{4π}}$ with $\mathcal{A}$ the event horizon area and $κ$ the surface gravity. Both the conjecture in the static spherically symmetric case and the Penrose inequality for a dynamical spacetime with spherical symmetry are proved by imposing the null energy condition. We then generalize the conjecture to a general dynamical spacetime. Our results raise a new challenge for the famous unsettled question in general relativity: in what general case can the null energy condition replace other energy conditions to ensure the Penrose inequality?

Cosmic censorship hypothesis and entropy bound on black holes in a canonical ensemble

This paper argues that the weak cosmic censorship hypothesis implies that the Schwarzschild black hole has maximal entropy in all stationary black holes of fixing temperature, or equivalently, to store a same amount of information the Schwarzschild black hole has highest temperature. It then gives the independent mathematical proofs for 4-dimensional general static black holes and stationary-axisymmetric black holes which have "$t$-$ϕ$" reflection isometry. This result does not only provide a new universal bound between temperature and entropy of black holes but also offers us new evidence to support the weak cosmic censorship hypothesis.

Superradiant Instability of Extremal Black Holes in STU Supergravity

We investigate the superradiant (in)stability of the extremal multi-charge static black holes in the STU supergravity model, which reduce to the RN black hole when all the charges are equal. We first show that the frequency of quasi-bound states is necessarily complex and obtain the corresponding superradiant condition. We then study the effective potential of the Schrödinger-like equation associated with the radial function of the charged scalar field. We find that trapping-well configurations can emerge with either a single peak or double peaks. We numerically obtain the corresponding unstable quasi-bound states, organized under the overtone number, as well as how the charged black holes deviate from the RN black hole. We find that the STU black holes are superradiantly unstable as long as not all the charges are equal, indicating that the superradiant stability of the extremal RN black hole is a fine-tuning result in the framework of the STU supergravity model.

What kind of "complexity" is dual to holographic complexity?

It is assumed that the holographic complexities such as the complexity-action (CA) and the complexity-volume (CV) conjecture are dual to complexity in field theory. However, because the definition of the complexity in field theory is still not complete, the confirmation of the holographic duality of the complexity is ambiguous. To improve this situation, we approach the problem from a different angle. We first identify minimal and genuin properties that the filed theory dual of the holographic complexity should satisfy without assuming anything from the circuit complexity or the information theory. Based on these properties, we propose a field theory formula dual to the holographic complexity. Our field theory formula implies that the complexity between certain states in two dimensional CFTs is given by the Liouville action, which is compatible with the path-integral complexity. It gives natural interpretations for both the CA and CV conjectures and identify what their reference states are. When applied to the thermo-field double states, it also gives consistent results with the holographic results in the CA conjecture: both the divergent term and finite term.

Simulating quantum field theory in curved spacetime with quantum many-body systems

This paper proposes a new general framework to build a one-to-one correspondence between quantum field theories in static 1+1 dimensional curved spacetime and quantum many-body systems. We show that a massless scalar field in an arbitrary 2-dimensional static spacetime is always equivalent to a site-dependent bosonic hopping model, while a massless Dirac field is equivalent to a site-dependent free Hubbard model or a site-dependent isotropic XY model. A possible experimental realization for such a correspondence in trapped ions system is suggested. As applications of the analogue gravity model, we show that they can be used to simulate Hawking radiation of black hole and to study its entanglement. We also show in the analogue model that black holes are most chaotic systems and the fastest scramblers in nature. We also offer a concrete example about how to get some insights about quantum many-body systems from back hole physics.

Time evolution of the complexity in chaotic systems: concrete examples

We investigate the time evolution of the complexity of the operator by the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with $N$ Majorana fermions. We follow Nielsen's idea of complexity geometry and geodesics thereof. We show that it is possible that the bi-invariant complexity geometry can exhibit the conjectured time evolution of the complexity in chaotic systems: i) linear growth until $t\sim e^{N}$, ii) saturation and small fluctuations after then. We also show that the Lloyd's bound is realized in this model. Interestingly, these characteristic features appear only if the complexity geometry is the most natural "non-Riemannian" Finsler geometry. This serves as a concrete example showing that the bi-invariant complexity may be a competitive candidate for the complexity in quantum mechanics/field theory (QM/QFT). We provide another argument showing a naturalness of bi-invariant complexity in QM/QFT. That is that the bi-invariance naturally implies the equivalence of the right-invariant complexity and left-invariant complexity, either of which may correspond to the complexity of a given operator. Without bi-invariance, one needs to answer why only right (left) invariant complexity corresponds to the "complexity", instead of only left (right) invariant complexity.

Complexity Growth for AdS Black Holes

Recently a Complexity-Action (CA) duality conjecture has been proposed, which relates the quantum complexity of a holographic boundary state to the action of a Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) patch in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk. In this paper we further investigate the duality conjecture for stationary AdS black holes and derive some exact results for the growth rate of action within the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) patch at late time approximation, which is supposed to be dual to the growth rate of quantum complexity of holographic state. Based on the results from the general $D$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström (RN)-AdS black hole, rotating/charged Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole, Kerr-AdS black hole and charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black hole, we present a universal formula for the action growth expressed in terms of some thermodynamical quantities associated with the outer and inner horizons of the AdS black holes. And we leave the conjecture unchanged that the stationary AdS black hole in Einstein gravity is the fastest computer in nature.

Multi-horizon and Critical Behavior in Gravitational Collapse of Massless Scalar

This paper studies the whole process of gravitational collapse and accretion of a massless scalar field in asymptotically flat spacetime. Two kinds of initial configurations are considered. One is the initial data without black hole, the other contains a black hole. Under suitable initial conditions, we find that multi-horizon will appear, which means that the initial black hole formed by gravitational collapse or existing at the beginning will instantly expand and suddenly grow, rather than grows gradually in the accretion process. A new type of critical behavior is found around the instant expansion. The numerical computation shows that the critical exponents are universal.

Multiple critical gravitational collapse of charged scalar with reflecting wall

In this paper, we present the results on the gravitational collapse of charged massless scalar field in asymptotically flat spacetime with a perfectly reflecting wall. Differing from previous works, we study the system in the double null coordinates, by which we could simulate the system until the black hole forms with higher precision but less performance time. We investigate the influence of charge on the black hole formation and the scaling behavior near the critical collapses. The gapless and gapped critical behaviors for black hole mass and charge are studied numerically. We find that they satisfy the scaling laws for critical gravitational collapse but the gapped critical behavior is different from its AdS counterpart.

Understanding strongly coupling magnetism from holographic duality

The unusual magnetic materials are significant in both science and technology. However, because of the strongly correlated effects, it is difficult to understand their novel properties from theoretical aspects. Holographic duality offers a new approach to understanding such systems from gravity side. This paper will give a brief review of our recent works on the applications of holographic duality in understanding unusual magnetic materials. Some quantitative compare between holographic results and experimental data will be shown and some predictions from holographic duality models will be discussed.

A Holographic Model for Paramagnetism/antiferromagnetism Phase Transition

In this paper we build a holographic model of paramagnetism/antiferromagnetism phase transition, which is realized by introducing two real antisymmetric tensor fields coupling to the background gauge field strength and interacting with each other in a dyonic black brane background. In the case without external magnetic field and in low temperatures, the magnetic moments condense spontaneously in antiparallel manner with the same magnitude and the time reversal symmetry is also broken spontaneously (if boundary spatial dimension is more than 2, spatial rotational symmetry is broken spontaneously as well), which leads to an antiferromagnetic phase. In the case with weak external magnetic field, the magnetic susceptibility density has a peak at the critical temperature and satisfies the Curie-Weiss law in the paramagnetic phase of antiferromagnetism. In the strong external magnetic field case, there is a critical magnetic field $B_c$ in antiferromagnetic phase: when magnetic field reaches $B_c$, the system will return into the paramagnetic phase by a second order phase transition.

Antisymmetric tensor field and spontaneous magnetization in holographic duality

A real anti-symmetric tensor field was introduced to realize a holographic magnetic ordered phase in our previous works. However, a more careful analysis shows there is a vector ghost in the model. In this paper we present a modified Lagrangian density for the anti-symmetric tensor, which is ghost free and causality is well-defined, and keeps all the significant results in the original model qualitatively. We show this modified Lagrangian density could come from the dimensional compactification of $p$-form field in String/M-theory. For static curved space-time, we also prove that this modified model is ghost free and dose not violate causality. This new model offers a solid foundation for the application of antisymmetric tensor field in holographic duality, especially for the spontaneous magnetization.

Collapse of self-interacting scalar field in anti-de Sitter space

The gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field with a self-interaction term $λϕ^4$ in anti-de Sitter space is investigated. We numerically investigate the effect of the self-interaction term on the critical amplitudes, forming time of apparent horizon, stable island and energy transformation. The results show that a positive $λ$ suppresses the formation of black hole, while a negative $λ$ enhances the process. We define two susceptibilities to characterize the effect of the self-interaction on the black hole formation, and find that near the critical amplitude, there exists a universal scaling relation with the critical exponent $α\approx 0.74$ for the time of black hole formation.

Holographic antiferromganetic quantum criticality and AdS$_2$ scaling limit

A holographic description on antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition (QPT) induced by magnetic field and the criticality in the vicinity of quantum critical point (QCP) have been investigated numerically recently. In this paper, we show that the properties of QPT in this holographic model are governed by a CFT dual to the emergent AdS$_2$ in the IR region, which confirms that the dual boundary theory is a strong coupling theory with dynamic exponent $z=2$ and logarithmic corrections appear. We also compare them with the results from Hertz model by solving RG equation at its upper critical dimension and with some experimental data from pyrochlores Er$_{2-2x}$Y$_{2x}$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and BiCoPO$_5$.

Holographic model for antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition induced by magnetic field

We propose a gravity dual of antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition (QPT) induced by magnetic field and study the critical behavior around the quantum critical point (QCP). It turns out that the boundary critical theory is a strong coupling theory with dynamic exponent $z=2$ and that the hyperscaling law is violated and logarithmic corrections appear near the QCP. Some novel scaling relations are predicated, which can be tested by experiment data in future. We also make some comparison with experimental data on low-dimensional magnets BiCoPO$_5$ and pyrochlores Er$_{2-2x}$Y$_{2x}$Ti$_2$O$_7$.

Insulator/metal phase transition and colossal magnetoresistance in holographic model

Within massive gravity, we construct a gravity dual for insulator/metal phase transition and colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect found in some manganese oxides materials. In heavy graviton limit, a remarkable magnetic-field-sensitive DC resistivity peak appears at the Curie temperature, where an insulator/metal phase transition happens and the magnetoresistance is scaled with the square of field-induced magnetization. We find that metallic and insulating phases coexist below the Curie point and the relation with the electronic phase separation is discussed.

Introduction to Holographic Superconductor Models

In the last years it has been shown that some properties of strongly coupled superconductors can be potentially described by classical general relativity living in one higher dimension, which is known as holographic superconductors. This paper gives a quick and introductory overview of some holographic superconductor models with s-wave, p-wave and d-wave orders in the literature from point of view of bottom-up, and summarizes some basic properties of these holographic models in various regimes. The competition and coexistence of these superconductivity orders are also studied in these superconductor models.

Massive $2$-form field and holographic ferromagnetic phase transition

In this paper, we investigate in some detail the holographic ferromagnetic phase transition in an AdS${_4}$ black brane background by introducing a massive 2-form field coupled to the Maxwell field strength in the bulk. In the two probe limits, one is to neglect the back reaction of the 2-form field to the background geometry and to the Maxwell field, and the other to neglect the back reaction of both the Maxwell field and the 2-form field, we find that the spontaneous magnetization and the ferromagnetic phase transition always happen when the temperature gets low enough with similar critical behavior. We calculate the DC resistivity in a semi-analytical method in the second probe limit and find it behaves as the colossal magnetic resistance effect in some materials. In the case with the first probe limit, we obtain the off-shell free energy of the holographic model near the critical temperature and compare with the Ising-like model. We also study the back reaction effect and find that the phase transition is always second order. In addition, we find an analytical Reissner-Norström-like black brane solution in the Einstein-Maxwell-2-form field theory with a negative cosmological constant.

Coexistence and competition of ferromagnetism and p-wave superconductivity in holographic model

By combining a holographic p-wave superconductor model and a holographic ferromagnetism model, we study the coexistence and competition of ferromagnetism and p-wave superconductivity. It is found that the results depend on the self-interaction of magnetic moment of the complex vector field and which phase appears first. In the case that the ferromagnetic phase appears first, if the interaction is attractive, the system shows the ferromagnetism and superconductivity can coexist in low temperatures. If the interaction is repulsive, the system will only be in a pure ferromagnetic state. In the case that the superconducting phase appears first, the attractive interaction will leads to a magnetic p-wave superconducting phase in low temperatures. If the interaction is repulsive, the system will be in a pure p-wave superconducting phase or ferromagnetic phase when the temperature is lowered.

Paramagnetism-Ferromagnetism Phase Transition in a Dyonic Black Hole

Coupling an antisymmetric tensor field to the electromagnetic field in a dyonic Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole background, we build a holographic model for the paramagnetism/ferromagnetism phase transition. In the case of zero magnetic field, the time reversal symmetry is broken spontaneously and spontaneous magnetization happens in low temperature. The critical exponents are in agreement with the ones from mean field theory. In the case of nonzero magnetic field, the model realizes the hysteresis loop of single magnetic domain and the magnetic susceptibility satisfies the Curie-Weiss law.

Towards Complete Phase Diagrams of a Holographic P-wave Superconductor Model

We study in detail the phase structure of a holographic p-wave superconductor model in a five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-complex vector field theory with a negative cosmological constant. To construct complete phase diagrams of the model, we consider both the soliton and black hole backgrounds. In both two cases, there exist second order, first order and zeroth order phase transitions, and the so-called "retrograde condensation" also happens. In particular, in the soliton case with the mass of the vector field being beyond a certain critical value, we find a series of phase transitions happen such as "insulator/superconductor/insulator/superconductor", as the chemical potential continuously increases. We construct complete phase diagrams in terms of temperature and chemical potential and find some new phase boundaries.

P-V criticality in the extended phase space of Gauss-Bonnet black holes in AdS space

We study the $P-V$ criticality and phase transition in the extended phase space of charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes in anti-de Sitter space, where the cosmological constant appears as a dynamical pressure of the system and its conjugate quantity is the thermodynamic volume of the black hole. The black holes can have a Ricci flat ($k=0$), spherical ($k=1$), or hyperbolic ($k=-1$) horizon. We find that for the Ricci flat and hyperbolic Gauss-Bonnet black holes, no $P-V$ criticality and phase transition appear, while for the black holes with a spherical horizon, even when the charge of the black hole is absent, the $P-V$ criticality and the small black hole/large black hole phase transition will appear, but it happens only in $d=5$ dimensions; when the charge does not vanish, the $P-V$ criticality and the small black hole/large phase transition always appear in $d=5$ dimensions; in the case of $d\ge 6$, to have the $P-V$ criticality and the small black hole/large black hole phase transition, there exists an upper bound for the parameter $b=\widetildeα|Q|^{-2/(d-3)}$, where $\tilde α$ is the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient and $Q$ is the charge of the black hole. We calculate the critical exponents at the critical point and find that for all cases, they are the same as those in the van der Waals liquid-gas system.
