How Far Is Document Parsing from Solved? PureDocBench: A Source-TraceableBenchmark across Clean, Degraded, and Real-World Settings

The past year has seen over 20 open-source document parsing models, yet thefield still benchmarks almost exclusively on OmniDocBench, a 1,355-pagemanually annotated dataset whose top scores have saturated above 90%. Athree-stage audit pipeline we run on OmniDocBench screens its 21,353evaluator-scored blocks and confirms 2,580 errors (12.08%); combined with overa year of public availability, both annotation quality and contamination riskcall its rankings into question. To address these issues, we presentPureDocBench, a programmatically generated, source-traceable benchmark thatrenders document images from HTML/CSS and produces verifiable annotations fromthe same source, covering 10 domains, 66 subcategories, and 1,475 pages, eachin three versions: clean, digitally degraded, and real-degraded (4,425 imagestotal). Evaluating 40 models spanning pipeline specialists, end-to-endspecialists, and general-purpose VLMs, we find: (i) document parsing is farfrom solved: the best model scores only ~74 out of 100, with a 44.6-point gapbetween the strongest and weakest models; (ii) specialist parsers with <=4Bparameters rival or surpass general VLMs that are 5-100x larger, yet formularecognition remains a shared bottleneck where no model exceeds 67% whenaveraging the formula metric across all three tracks; (iii) general VLMs loseonly 0.99/8.52 Overall points under digital/real degradation versus 4.90/14.21for pipeline specialists, producing ranking reversals that make clean-onlyevaluation misleading for deployment. All data, code, and artifacts arepublicly released.

3D-SSGAN: Lifting 2D Semantics for 3D-Aware Compositional Portrait Synthesis

Existing 3D-aware portrait synthesis methods can generate impressive high-quality images while preserving strong 3D consistency. However, most of them cannot support the fine-grained part-level control over synthesized images. Conversely, some GAN-based 2D portrait synthesis methods can achieve clear disentanglement of facial regions, but they cannot preserve view consistency due to a lack of 3D modeling abilities. To address these issues, we propose 3D-SSGAN, a novel framework for 3D-aware compositional portrait image synthesis. First, a simple yet effective depth-guided 2D-to-3D lifting module maps the generated 2D part features and semantics to 3D. Then, a volume renderer with a novel 3D-aware semantic mask renderer is utilized to produce the composed face features and corresponding masks. The whole framework is trained end-to-end by discriminating between real and synthesized 2D images and their semantic masks. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate the superiority of 3D-SSGAN in controllable part-level synthesis while preserving 3D view consistency.

Adaptive actuation of magnetic soft robots using deep reinforcement learning

Magnetic soft robots have attracted growing interest due to their unique advantages in terms of untethered actuation and excellent controllability. However, finding the required magnetization patterns or magnetic fields to achieve the desired functions of these robots is quite challenging in many cases. No unified framework for design has been proposed yet, and existing methods mainly rely on manual heuristics, which are hard to satisfy the high complexity level of the desired robotic motion. Here, we develop an intelligent method to solve the related inverse-design problems, implemented by introducing a novel simulation platform for magnetic soft robots based on Cosserat rod models and a deep reinforcement learning framework based on TD3. We demonstrate that magnetic soft robots with different magnetization patterns can learn to move without human guidance in simulations, and effective magnetic fields can be autonomously generated that can then be applied directly to real magnetic soft robots in an open-loop way.

Minimax Optimal Deep Neural Network Classifiers Under Smooth Decision Boundary

Deep learning has gained huge empirical successes in large-scale classification problems. In contrast, there is a lack of statistical understanding about deep learning methods, particularly in the minimax optimality perspective. For instance, in the classical smooth decision boundary setting, existing deep neural network (DNN) approaches are rate-suboptimal, and it remains elusive how to construct minimax optimal DNN classifiers. Moreover, it is interesting to explore whether DNN classifiers can circumvent the curse of dimensionality in handling high-dimensional data. The contributions of this paper are two-fold. First, based on a localized margin framework, we discover the source of suboptimality of existing DNN approaches. Motivated by this, we propose a new deep learning classifier using a divide-and-conquer technique: DNN classifiers are constructed on each local region and then aggregated to a global one. We further propose a localized version of the classical Tsybakov&#39;s noise condition, under which statistical optimality of our new classifier is established. Second, we show that DNN classifiers can adapt to low-dimensional data structures and circumvent the curse of dimensionality in the sense that the minimax rate only depends on the effective dimension, potentially much smaller than the actual data dimension. Numerical experiments are conducted on simulated data to corroborate our theoretical results.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Wireless Communications: Overview of Hardware Designs, Channel Models, and Estimation Techniques

The demanding objectives for the future sixth generation (6G) of wireless communication networks have spurred recent research efforts on novel materials and radio-frequency front-end architectures for wireless connectivity, as well as revolutionary communication and computing paradigms. Among the pioneering candidate technologies for 6G belong the reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are artificial planar structures with integrated electronic circuits that can be programmed to manipulate the incoming electromagnetic field in a wide variety of functionalities. Incorporating RISs in wireless networks has been recently advocated as a revolutionary means to transform any wireless signal propagation environment to a dynamically programmable one, intended for various networking objectives, such as coverage extension and capacity boosting, spatiotemporal focusing with benefits in energy efficiency and secrecy, and low electromagnetic field exposure. Motivated by the recent increasing interests in the field of RISs and the consequent pioneering concept of the RIS-enabled smart wireless environments, in this paper, we overview and taxonomize the latest advances in RIS hardware architectures as well as the most recent developments in the modeling of RIS unit elements and RIS-empowered wireless signal propagation. We also present a thorough overview of the channel estimation approaches for RIS-empowered communications systems, which constitute a prerequisite step for the optimized incorporation of RISs in future wireless networks. Finally, we discuss the relevance of the RIS technology in the latest wireless communication standards, and highlight the current and future standardization activities for the RIS technology and the consequent RIS-empowered wireless networking approaches.

Domain-Invariant Speaker Vector Projection by Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning

Domain generalization remains a critical problem for speaker recognition, even with the state-of-the-art architectures based on deep neural nets. For example, a model trained on reading speech may largely fail when applied to scenarios of singing or movie. In this paper, we propose a domain-invariant projection to improve the generalizability of speaker vectors. This projection is a simple neural net and is trained following the Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (MAML) principle, for which the objective is to classify speakers in one domain if it had been updated with speech data in another domain. We tested the proposed method on CNCeleb, a new dataset consisting of single-speaker multi-condition (SSMC) data. The results demonstrated that the MAML-based domain-invariant projection can produce more generalizable speaker vectors, and effectively improve the performance in unseen domains.

On Deep Instrumental Variables Estimate

The endogeneity issue is fundamentally important as many empirical applications may suffer from the omission of explanatory variables, measurement error, or simultaneous causality. Recently, \cite{hllt17} propose a &#34;Deep Instrumental Variable (IV)&#34; framework based on deep neural networks to address endogeneity, demonstrating superior performances than existing approaches. The aim of this paper is to theoretically understand the empirical success of the Deep IV. Specifically, we consider a two-stage estimator using deep neural networks in the linear instrumental variables model. By imposing a latent structural assumption on the reduced form equation between endogenous variables and instrumental variables, the first-stage estimator can automatically capture this latent structure and converge to the optimal instruments at the minimax optimal rate, which is free of the dimension of instrumental variables and thus mitigates the curse of dimensionality. Additionally, in comparison with classical methods, due to the faster convergence rate of the first-stage estimator, the second-stage estimator has {a smaller (second order) estimation error} and requires a weaker condition on the smoothness of the optimal instruments. Given that the depth and width of the employed deep neural network are well chosen, we further show that the second-stage estimator achieves the semiparametric efficiency bound. Simulation studies on synthetic data and application to automobile market data confirm our theory.
