Numerical Solution of Dynamic Portfolio Optimization with Transaction Costs

We apply numerical dynamic programming techniques to solve discrete-time multi-asset dynamic portfolio optimization problems with proportional transaction costs and shorting/borrowing constraints. Examples include problems with multiple assets, and many trading periods in a finite horizon problem. We also solve dynamic stochastic problems, with a portfolio including one risk-free asset, an option, and its underlying risky asset, under the existence of transaction costs and constraints. These examples show that it is now tractable to solve such problems.

Physics-enhanced machine learning for virtual fluorescence microscopy

This paper introduces a new method of data-driven microscope design for virtual fluorescence microscopy. Our results show that by including a model of illumination within the first layers of a deep convolutional neural network, it is possible to learn task-specific LED patterns that substantially improve the ability to infer fluorescence image information from unstained transmission microscopy images. We validated our method on two different experimental setups, with different magnifications and different sample types, to show a consistent improvement in performance as compared to conventional illumination methods. Additionally, to understand the importance of learned illumination on inference task, we varied the dynamic range of the fluorescent image targets (from one to seven bits), and showed that the margin of improvement for learned patterns increased with the information content of the target. This work demonstrates the power of programmable optical elements at enabling better machine learning algorithm performance and at providing physical insight into next generation of machine-controlled imaging systems.

PS-RCNN: Detecting Secondary Human Instances in a Crowd via Primary Object Suppression

Detecting human bodies in highly crowded scenes is a challenging problem. Two main reasons result in such a problem: 1). weak visual cues of heavily occluded instances can hardly provide sufficient information for accurate detection; 2). heavily occluded instances are easier to be suppressed by Non-Maximum-Suppression (NMS). To address these two issues, we introduce a variant of two-stage detectors called PS-RCNN. PS-RCNN first detects slightly/none occluded objects by an R-CNN module (referred as P-RCNN), and then suppress the detected instances by human-shaped masks so that the features of heavily occluded instances can stand out. After that, PS-RCNN utilizes another R-CNN module specialized in heavily occluded human detection (referred as S-RCNN) to detect the rest missed objects by P-RCNN. Final results are the ensemble of the outputs from these two R-CNNs. Moreover, we introduce a High Resolution RoI Align (HRRA) module to retain as much of fine-grained features of visible parts of the heavily occluded humans as possible. Our PS-RCNN significantly improves recall and AP by 4.49% and 2.92% respectively on CrowdHuman, compared to the baseline. Similar improvements on Widerperson are also achieved by the PS-RCNN.

Nuclear modification of high-p_T hadron spectra in p+A collisions at LHC

Multiple parton scatterings in high-energy p+A collisions involve multi-parton correlation inside the projectile and color coherence of multiple jets which will lead to nuclear modification of final hadron spectra relative to that in p+p collisions. Such modification of final hadron spectra in p+A collisions is studied within HIJING 2.1 model which includes initial parton shadowing, transverse momentum broadening, parton flavor and momentum correlation inside the projectile through flavor and momentum conservation and fragmentation of multiple jets. They are shown to modify the partonic flavor content of final jets and momentum spectra of final hadrons in p+A collisions at the Large Hadron Collider.

Suppression of high $p_T$ hadron spectra in $p+A$ collisions

Multiple hard and semi-hard parton scatterings in high-energy $p+A$ collisions involve multi-parton correlation in both momentum and flavor inside the projectile proton which will lead to modification of the final hadron spectra relative to that in $p+p$ collisions. Such modification of final hadron transverse momentum spectra in $p+A$ collisions is studied within HIJING 2.1 Monte Carlo model which includes nuclear shadowing of the initial parton distributions and transverse momentum broadening. Multi-parton flavor and momentum correlation inside the projectile are incorporated through flavor and momentum conservation which are shown to modify the flavor content and momentum spectra of final partons and most importantly lead to suppression of large $p_{T}$ hadron spectra in $p+A$ collisions at both RHIC and LHC energies.

Gluon shadowing and hadron production in heavy-ion collisions at LHC

The recently published first measurement of charged hadron multiplicity density at mid-rapidity $dN_{ch}/dη=1584 \pm 4 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 76 ({\rm sys.})$ in central $Pb+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 2.76$ TeV by the ALICE Experiment at LHC is in good agreement with the HIJING2.0 prediction within the experimental errors and theoretical uncertainties. The new data point is used to carry out a combined fit together with the RHIC data to reduce the uncertainty in the gluon shadowing parameter $s_{g}$ which controls the overall magnitude of gluon shadowing at small fractional momentum $x$ in HIJING2.0 model. Predictions on the centrality dependence of charged hadron multiplicity density at mid-rapidity with reduced uncertainty are given for $Pb+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ and 5.5 TeV. The centrality dependence is surprisingly independent of the colliding energy as compared to RHIC energy for most of centralities starting at $N_{\rm part}=50$ (100) at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ (7) TeV. However, it becomes stronger in peripheral collisions at higher colliding energies.

Hadron production in p+p, p+Pb, and Pb+Pb collisions with the HIJING 2.0 model at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

The HIJING (Heavy-ion Jet Interaction Generator) Monte Carlo model is updated with the latest parton distributions functions (PDF) and new set of the parameters in the two-component mini-jet model that controls total $p+p$ cross section and the central pseudorapity density. We study hadron spectra and multiplicity distributions using the HIJING 2.0 model and compare to recent experimental data from $p+p$ collisions at the LHC energies. We also give predictions of hadron production in $p+p$, $p+Pb$ and $Pb+Pb$ collisions at the full LHC energy.

Mini-jet thermalization and diffusion of transverse momentum correlation in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Transverse momentum correlation in azimuthal angle of produced hadrons due to mini-jets are studied first within the HIJING Monte Carlo model in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Jet quenching in the early stage of thermalization is shown to lead to significant diffusion (broadening) of the correlation. Evolution of the transverse momentum density fluctuation that gives rise to such correlation in azimuthal angle in the later stage of heavy-ion collisions is further investigated within a linearized diffusion-like equation and is shown to be determined by the shear viscosity of the evolving dense matter. Such a diffusion equation for the transverse momentum fluctuation is solved with initial values given by HIJING and together with the hydrodynamic equation for the bulk medium. The final transverse momentum correlation in azimuthal angle is calculated along the freeze-out hyper-surface and is found further diffused for larger values of shear viscosity to entropy density ratio $η/s \sim 0.2-0.4$. Therefore the final transverse momentum correlation in azimuthal angle can be used to study the thermalization of mini-jets in the early stage of heavy-ion collisions and the viscous effect in the hydrodynamic evolution of the strongly coupled quark gluon plasma.
