3D Multi-system Bayesian Calibration with Energy Conservation to Study Rapidity-dependent Dynamics of Nuclear Collisions

Considerable information about the early-stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions is encoded in the rapidity dependence of measurements. To leverage the large amount of experimental data, we perform a systematic analysis using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of multiple collision systems -- large and small, symmetric and asymmetric. Specifically, we perform fully 3D multi-stage hydrodynamic simulations initialized by a parameterized model for rapidity-dependent energy deposition, which we calibrate on the hadron multiplicity and anisotropic flow coefficients. We utilize Bayesian inference to constrain properties of the early- and late- time dynamics of the system, and highlight the impact of enforcing global energy conservation in our 3D model.

Relativistic spin dynamics for vector mesons

We propose a relativistic theory for spin density matrices of vector mesons based on Kadanoff-Baym equations in the closed-time-path formalism. The theory puts the calculation of spin observables such as the spin density matrix element $ρ_{00}$ for vector mesons on a solid ground. Within the theory we formulate $ρ_{00}$ for $ϕ$ mesons into a factorization form in separation of momentum and space-time variables. We argue that the main contribution to $ρ_{00}$ at lower energies should be from the $ϕ$ fields that can polarize the strange quark and antiquark in the same way as electromagnetic fields. The key observation is that there is correlation inside the $ϕ$ meson wave function between the $ϕ$ field that polarizes the strange quark and that polarizes the strange antiquark. This is reflected by the fact that the contributions to $ρ_{00}$ are all in squares of fields which are nonvanishing even if the fields may strongly fluctuate in space-time. The fluctuation of strong force fields can be extracted from $ρ_{00}$ of quarkonium vector mesons as links to fundamental properties of quantum chromodynamics.

(3+1)-D viscous hydrodynamics CLVisc at finite net baryon density: identified particle spectra, anisotropic flows and flow fluctuations across BES energies

To study the bulk properties of the quark-gluon-plasma (QGP) produced at the beam energy scan (BES) energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we extend the (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics CLVisc to include net baryon number conservation and Israel-Stewart-like equation for baryon diffusion with the NEOS-BQS equation of state, fluctuating initial conditions from Monte-Carlo Glauber model, and the afterburner SMASH. This integrated framework is shown to provide a good description of identified particle spectra, mean transverse momenta and anisotropic flows for different centralities and over a wide range of collision energies (7.7-62.4 GeV). It is found that the mean momenta of identified particles and anisotropic flows increases mildly with the collision energy due to larger radial flow. We further compute the multiple-particle cumulant ratio $v_2\{4\}/v_2\{2\}$ of elliptic flow across BES energies, and find that the relative fluctuations of elliptic flow are insensitive to the collision energy, consistent with the preliminary STAR data. Our model provides a benchmark for understanding the RHIC-BES data and studying the critical properties and phase structure of hot and dense QCD matter.

Event-by-event jet anisotropy and hard-soft tomography of the quark-gluon plasma

Suppression of jet spectra or jet quenching in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is caused by jet energy loss in the dense medium. The azimuthal anisotropy of jet energy loss in non-central heavy-ion collisions can lead to jet anisotropy which in turn can provide insight into the path-length dependence of jet quenching. This is investigated within the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model which simulates both elastic scattering and medium-induced gluon radiation based on perturbative QCD for jet shower and medium recoil partons as well as radiated gluons as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). The dynamical evolution of the QGP in each event of heavy-ion collisions is provided by the (3+1)D CLVisc hydrodynamic model with fully fluctuating initial conditions. This framework has been shown to describe the suppression of single inclusive jet spectra well. We calculate in this study the elliptic ($v_{2}^{\rm jet}$) and triangular ($v_{3}^{\rm jet}$) anisotropy coefficients of the single inclusive jet spectra in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC energies. We investigate the colliding energy, centrality, jet transverse momentum dependence of the jet anisotropy, as well as their event-by-event correlation with the flow coefficients of the soft bulk hadrons. An approximate linear correlation between jet and bulk $v_2$ is found. Effect of the bulk $v_n$ fluctuation on $v_n^{\rm jet}$ is found negligible. The jet-induced medium excitation, which is influenced by radial flow, is shown to enhance $v_{2}^{\rm jet}$ and the enhancement increases with the jet cone size. The jet elliptic anisotropy $v_{2}^{\rm jet}$ is also found to be slightly enhanced by the shear viscosity of the bulk medium in comparison to the LBT results when jets propagate through an ideal hydrodynamic QGP medium.

From hydro to jet quenching, coalescence and hadron cascade: a coupled approach to solving the $R_{AA}\otimes v_2$ puzzle

Hydrodynamics and jet quenching are responsible for the elliptic flow $v_2$ and suppression of large transverse momentum ($p_T$) hadrons, respectively, two of the most important phenomena leading to the discovery of a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. A consistent description of the hadron suppression factor $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$, especially at intermediate $p_T$, however, remains a challenge. We solve this long-standing $R_{AA}\otimes v_2$ puzzle by including quark coalescence for hadronization and final state hadron cascade in the coupled linear Boltzmann transport-hydro model that combines concurrent jet transport and hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk medium. We illustrate that quark coalescence and hadron cascade, two keys to solving the puzzle, also lead to a splitting of $v_2$ for pions, kaons and protons in the intermediate $p_T$ region. We demonstrate for the first time that experimental data on $R_{AA}$, $v_2$ and their hadron flavor dependence from low to intermediate and high $p_T$ in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can be understood within this coupled framework.

Modification of $Z^0$ leptonic invariant mass in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions as a measure of the electromagnetic field

An extraordinary strong magnetic field, $eB_0 \approx 10^{18}$ Gauss, is expected to be generated in non-central ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions and it is envisaged to induce several effects on hot QCD matter including the possibility of local parity and local parity and charge conjugation symmetry violations. A direct signature of such e.m. fields and a first quantitative measurement of its strength and lifetime are still missing. We point out that both the mean value of leptonic invariant mass of $Z^0$ boson, reconstructed by its decaying lepton pairs, and the relative width are modified in relativistic heavy ion collisions due to the presence of strong initial e.m. fields. We propose a measurement of the leptonic invariant mass of $Z^0$ as a novel probe of the strength of the $B_y$. Both shifts could be up to about few hundred MeV and are found to depend on the integral of $B_y$ over the time duration quadratically (approximate). Hence it provides a novel and clear probe of electromagnetic fields, which can be tested experimentally.

Parton rescattering and gluon saturation in dijet production at EIC

Large angle gluon radiations induced by multiple parton scatterings contribute to dijet production in deeply inelastic scattering off a large nucleus at the Electron-Ion Collider. Within the generalized high-twist approach to multiple parton scattering, such contributions at the leading order in perturbative QCD and large Bjorken momentum fraction $x_B$ can be expressed as a convolution of the multiple parton scattering amplitudes and the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) two-parton correlation matrix elements. We study this medium-induced dijet spectrum and its azimuthal angle correlation under the approximation of small longitudinal momentum transfer in the secondary scattering and the factorization of two-parton correlation matrix elements as a product of quark and gluon TMD parton distribution function (PDF). Using a simple model for gluon saturation based on the parametrized gluon TMD PDF, we can calculate the $x_B$ and $Q^2$ dependence of the saturation scale and parton transport coefficient $\hat q$. Contributions to dijet cross section from double scattering are power-suppressed and only become sizable for mini-jets at small transverse momentum. We find that the total dijet correlation for these mini-jets, which also includes the contribution from single scattering, is sensitive to the transverse momentum broadening in the quark TMD PDF at large $x$ and saturation in the gluon TMD PDF at small $x$ inside the nucleus. The correlation from double scattering is also found to increase with the dijet rapidity gap and have a quadratic nuclear-size dependence because of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) interference in gluon emission induced by multiple scattering. Experimental measurements of such unique features in the dijet correlation can shed light on the LPM interference in strong interaction and gluon saturation in large nuclei.

Probing criticality with deep learning in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Systems with different interactions could develop the same critical behaviour due to the underlying symmetry and universality. Using this principle of universality, we can embed critical correlations modeled on the 3D Ising model into the simulated data of heavy-ion collisions, hiding weak signals of a few inter-particle correlations within a large particle cloud. Employing a point cloud network with dynamical edge convolution, we are able to identify events with critical fluctuations through supervised learning, and pick out a large fraction of signal particles used for decision-making in each single event.

Quenching of jets tagged with $W$ bosons in high-energy nuclear collisions

We carry out the first detailed calculations of jet production associated with $W$ gauge bosons in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In our calculations, the production of $W$+jet in p+p collisions as a reference is obtained by Sherpa, which performs next-to-leading-order matrix element calculations matched to the resummation of parton shower simulations, while jet propagation and medium response in the quark-gluon plasma are simulated with the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model. We provide numerical predictions on seven observables of $W$+jet production with jet quenching in Pb+Pb collisions: the medium modification factor for the tagged jet cross sections $I_{AA}$, the distribution in invariant mass between the two leading jets in $N_{jets}\ge 2$ events $m_{jj}$, the missing $p_T$ or the vector sum of the lepton and jet transverse momentum $|\vec{p}_T^{Miss}|$, the summed scalar $p_T$ of all the jets in an event $S_T$, transverse momentum imbalance $x_{jW}$, average number of jets per $W$ boson $R_{jW}$, and azimuthal angle between the $W$ boson and jets $Δϕ_{jW}$. The distinct nuclear modifications of these seven observables in Pb+Pb relative to that in p+p collisions are presented with detailed discussions.

Search for the elusive jet-induced diffusion wake in $Z/γ$-jets with 2D jet tomography in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Diffusion wake is an unambiguous part of the jet-induced medium response in high-energy heavy-ion collisions that leads to a depletion of soft hadrons in the opposite direction of the jet propagation. New experimental data on $Z$-hadron correlation in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider show, however, an enhancement of soft hadrons in the direction of both the $Z$ and the jet. Using a coupled linear Boltzmann transport and hydro model, we demonstrate that medium modification of partons from the initial multiple parton interaction (MPI) gives rise to a soft hadron enhancement that is uniform in azimuthal angle while jet-induced medium response and soft gluon radiation dominate the enhancement in the jet direction. After subtraction of the contributions from MPI with a mixed-event procedure, the diffusion wake becomes visible in the near-side $Z$-hadron correlation. We further employ the longitudinal and transverse gradient jet tomography for the first time to localize the initial jet production positions in $Z/γ$-jet events in which the effect of the diffusion wake is apparent in $Z/γ$-hadron correlation even without the subtraction of MPI.

Medium-induced flavor conversion and kaon spectra in electron-ion collisions

Multiple scattering and induced parton splitting lead to a medium modification of the QCD evolution for jet fragmentation functions and the final hadron spectra. Medium-induced parton splittings not only lead to energy loss of leading partons and suppression of leading hadron spectra, but also modify the flavor composition of a jet due to induced flavor conversion via gluon emission, quark pair production and annihilation. Through a numerical study of the medium-modified QCD evolution, leading $K^-$ strange meson spectra are found to be particularly sensitive to the induced flavor conversion in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scatterings (SIDIS) off a large nucleus. The induced flavor conversion can lead to increased number of gluons and sea quarks in a jet and, as a consequence, enhance the leading $K^-$ spectra to counter the effect of parton energy loss in SIDIS with large momentum fractions $x_B$ where the struck quarks are mostly valence quarks of the nucleus.

QLBT: A linear Boltzmann transport model for heavy quarks in a quark-gluon plasma of quasi-particles

We develop a new heavy quark transport model, QLBT, to simulate the dynamical propagation of heavy quarks inside the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our QLBT model is based on the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model with the ideal QGP replaced by a collection of quasi-particles to account for the non-perturbative interactions among quarks and gluons of the hot QGP. The thermal masses of quasi-particles are fitted to the equation of state from lattice QCD simulations using the Bayesian statistical analysis method. Combining QLBT with our advanced hybrid fragmentation-coalescence hadronization approach, we calculate the nuclear modification factor $R_\mathrm{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of $D$ mesons at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. By comparing our QLBT calculation to the experimental data on the $D$ meson $R_\mathrm{AA}$ and $v_2$, we extract the heavy quark transport parameter $\hat{q}$ and diffusion coefficient $D_\mathrm{s}$ in the temperature range of $1-4~T_\mathrm{c}$, and compare them with the lattice QCD results and other phenomenological studies.

Gradient Tomography of Jet Quenching in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Transverse momentum broadening and energy loss of a propagating parton are dictated by the space-time profile of the jet transport coefficient $\hat q$ in a dense QCD medium. The spatial gradient of $\hat q$ perpendicular to the propagation direction can lead to a drift and asymmetry in parton transverse momentum distribution. Such an asymmetry depends on both the spatial position along the transverse gradient and path length of a propagating parton as shown by numerical solutions of the Boltzmann transport in the simplified form of a drift-diffusion equation. In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, this asymmetry with respect to a plane defined by the beam and trigger particle (photon, hadron or jet) with a given orientation relative to the event plane is shown to be closely related to the transverse position of the initial jet production in full event-by-event simulations within the linear Boltzmann transport model. Such a gradient tomography can be used to localize the initial jet production position for more detailed study of jet quenching and properties of the quark-gluon plasma along a given propagation path in heavy-ion collisions.

Gradient tomography of jet quenching in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

We illustrate with both a Boltzmann diffusion equation and full simulations of jet propagation in heavy-ion collisions within the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model that the spatial gradient of the jet transport coefficient perpendicular to the propagation direction can lead to a drift and asymmetry in the transverse momentum distribution. Such an asymmetry depends on both the spatial position along the transverse gradience and the propagating length. It can be used to localize the initial jet production positions for more detailed studies of jet quenching and properties of the quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions.

Identifying the nature of the QCD transition in relativistic collision of heavy nuclei with deep learning

Using deep convolutional neural network (CNN), the nature of the QCD transition can be identified from the final-state pion spectra from hybrid model simulations of heavy-ion collisions that combines a viscous hydrodynamic model with a hadronic cascade "after-burner". Two different types of equations of state (EoS) of the medium are used in the hydrodynamic evolution. The resulting spectra in transverse momentum and azimuthal angle are used as the input data to train the neural network to distinguish different EoS. Different scenarios for the input data are studied and compared in a systematic way. A clear hierarchy is observed in the prediction accuracy when using the event-by-event, cascade-coarse-grained and event-fine-averaged spectra as input for the network, which are about 80%, 90% and 99%, respectively. A comparison with the prediction performance by deep neural network (DNN) with only the normalized pion transverse momentum spectra is also made. High-level features of pion spectra captured by a carefully-trained neural network were found to be able to distinguish the nature of the QCD transition even in a simulation scenario which is close to the experiments.

Improved quark coalescence model for spin alignment and polarization of hadrons

We propose an improved quark coalescence model for spin alignment of vector mesons and polarization of baryons by spin density matrix with phase space dependence. The spin density matrix is defined through Wigner functions. Within the model we propose an understanding of spin alignments of vector mesons $ϕ$ and $K^{*0}$ (including $\bar{K}^{*0}$) in the static limit: a large positive deviation of $ρ_{00}$ for $ϕ$ mesons from 1/3 may come from the electric part of the vector $ϕ$ field, while a negative deviation of $ρ_{00}$ for $K^{*0}$ may come from the electric part of vorticity tensor fields. Such a negative contribution to $ρ_{00}$ for $K^{*0}$ mesons, in comparison with the same contribution to $ρ_{00}$ for $ϕ$ mesons which is less important, is amplified by a factor of the mass ratio of strange to light quark times the ratio of $\left\langle \mathbf{p}_{b}^{2}\right\rangle $ on the wave function of $K^{*0}$ to $ϕ$ ($\mathbf{p}_{b}$ is the relative momentum of two constituent quarks of $K^{*0}$ and $ϕ$). These results should be tested by a detailed and comprehensive simulation of vorticity tensor fields and vector meson fields in heavy ion collisions.

We will review recent progresses in theoretical and phenomenological studies of jet quenching with jet transport models. Special emphasis is given to effects of jet-induced medium response on a wide variety of experimental measurements and their implication on extracting transport properties of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions.

Longitudinal dependence of B and D meson nuclear modifications in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC

It is widely acknowledged that heavy flavor probes are sensitive to the properties of the quark-gluon plasma and are often considered an important tool for the plasma tomography studies. Forward rapidity observables can provide further insight on the dynamics of the medium due to the interplay between the medium size and the differences in the production spectra of heavy quark probes. In this proceedings we present the nuclear modification factor $R_\text{AA}$'s for B and D mesons, as well as heavy flavor leptons, in the rapidity range $-4.0 < y < 4.0$ obtained from relativistic Langevin equation with gluon radiation coupled with a (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics medium background. We present comparison with experimental data at mid-rapidity as well as predictions for different rapidity ranges.

Medium modification of $γ$-jet fragmentation functions in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC

Coupled linear Boltzmann transport and hydrodynamic (CoLBT-hydro) model has been developed for simultaneous simulations of jet propagation and jet-induced medium excitation in heavy-ion collisions. Within this coupled approach, the final reconstructed jets in heavy-ion collisions include not only hadrons from the hadronization of medium modified jet shower partons from the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) but also hadrons from the freeze-out of the jet-induced medium excitation in the hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk medium. Using the CoLBT-hydro model, we study medium modification of the fragmentation functions of $γ$-triggered jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. The CoLBT-hydro model is shown to describe the experimental data not only on the suppression of leading hadrons within the jet cone at large momentum fraction $z_γ=p_T^h/p_T^γ$ relative to the transverse momentum of the trigger photon due to parton energy loss but also the enhancement of soft hadrons at small $z_γ$ and $z_{\rm jet}=p_T^h/p_T^{\rm jet}$ due to jet-induced medium excitation. There is no suppression of the fragmentation function, however, at large momentum fraction $z_{\rm jet}$ relative to the transverse momentum of the reconstructed jet due to trigger bias and medium modification of quark to gluon jet fraction. For jets whose final transverse momenta are comparable to or larger than that of the trigger photon, the trigger bias can lead to enhancement of the jet fragmentation function at large $z_{\rm jet}$.

Study of heavy-flavor jets in a transport approach

Measurements at the RHIC and the LHC have observed flavor dependence of single-hadron suppression, which reveal the role played by quark masses in the parton interactions with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium. In this study, we explore the manifestation of quark mass effect and flavor dependence in jet observables. We approach this study using the LIDO transport model. Both elastic and medium-induced radiative processes are implemented for hard parton evolution in the medium. To guarantee energy-momentum conservation in the model for the study of full jet observables, we also include a component that mimics the energy-momentum transported by medium excitation. We first predict the heavy-jet (B-jet, D-jet) and inclusive-jet nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ in central nuclear collisions at both the RHIC and the LHC beam energies. We observe a flavor-dependent jet suppression as a function of jet transverse momentum, which can be tested by future precision measurements of heavy jets. We further investigate a novel observable that considers the angular correlation between two hard objects: a D-meson and a jet, which provides model constraints in addition to those imposed by inclusive measurements.

Longitudinal dependence of open heavy flavor $R_\text{AA}$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Heavy flavor probes are sensitive to the properties of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A huge amount of effort has been devoted to studying different aspects of the heavy-ion collisions using heavy flavor particles. In this work, we study the dynamics of heavy quark transport in the QGP medium using the rapidity dependence of heavy flavor observables. We calculate the nuclear modification of $\text{B}$ and $\text{D}$ meson spectra as well as spectra of leptons from heavy flavor decays in the rapidity range $[-4.0,4.0]$. We use an implementation of the improved Langevin equation with gluon radiation on top of a (3+1)-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamical background for several collision setups. We find that the rapidity dependence of the heavy quark modification is determined by the interplay between the smaller size of the medium, which affects the path length of the heavy quarks, and the softer heavy quark initial production spectrum. We compare our results with available experimental data and present predictions for open heavy flavor meson $R_\text{AA}$ at finite rapidity.

Gluon contribution to open heavy-meson production in heavy-ion collisions

A sizable contribution to heavy quark production in high-energy hadronic and nuclear collisions comes from heavy quark-antiquark pair production from gluon splitting during the parton shower evolution. We investigate the effect of gluon-medium interaction on open heavy flavor spectra in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The interaction of hard gluons and heavy quarks with the hot QCD medium is simulated by utilizing a Langevin transport model that simultaneously incorporates contributions from collisional and radiative processes. It is found that while the gluon splitting channel has quite an important contribution to the single $D$ meson production cross section, its influence on the final heavy meson nuclear modification turns out to be quite modest because the average lifetime of hard gluons is short before splitting into heavy quark-antiquark pairs during the evolution and propagation of the parton shower.

Linearized Boltzmann transport model for jet propagation in the quark-gluon plasma: Heavy quark evolution

A Linearized Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model coupled with hydrodynamical background is established to describe the evolution of jet shower partons and medium excitations in high energy heavy-ion collisions. We extend the LBT model to include both elastic and inelastic processes for light and heavy partons in the quark-gluon plasma. A hybrid model of fragmentation and coalescence is developed for the hadronization of heavy quarks. Within this framework, we investigate how heavy flavor observables depend on various ingredients, such as different energy loss and hadronization mechanisms, the momentum and temperature dependences of the transport coefficients, and the radial flow of the expanding fireball. Our model calculations show good descriptions of the $D$ meson suppression and elliptic flow observed at the LHC and RHIC. The prediction for the Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$=5.02~TeV is provided.

Next-to-leading order transverse momentum broadening for Drell-Yan production in p+A collisions

We present the nuclear transverse momentum broadening for Drell-Yan lepton pair production in p+A collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in powers of strong coupling constant $α_s$. We verify that the transverse momentum weighted differential cross section in NLO perturbative QCD (pQCD) at twist-4 can be factorized into the convolution of parton distribution function of an active parton in the projectile proton, a twist-4 multiparton correlation function of the target nucleus, and perturbatively calculable hard coefficient function. We identify a QCD evolution equation for such a twist-4 nuclear gluon-quark correlation function, and verify its universality -- its process independence. This finding demonstrates the prediction power of pQCD factorization approach for studying parton multiple scattering in nuclear medium.

Polarization of massive fermions in a vortical fluid

Fermions become polarized in a vorticular fluid due to spin-vorticity coupling. Such a polarization can be calculated from the Wigner function in a quantum kinetic approach. Extending previous results for chiral fermions, we derive the Wigner function for massive fermions up to the next-to-leading order in spatial gradient expansion. The polarization density of fermions can be calculated from the axial vector component of the Wigner function and is found to be proportional to the local vorticity $ω$. The polarizations per particle for fermions and anti-fermions decrease with the chemical potential and increase with energy (mass). Both quantities approach the asymptotic value $\hbarω/4$ in the large energy (mass) limit. The polarization per particle for fermions is always smaller than that for anti-fermions, whose ratio of fermions to anti-fermions also decreases with the chemical potential. The polarization per particle on the Cooper-Frye freeze-out hyper-surface can also be formulated and is consistent with the previous result of Becattini et al..

Transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at next-to-leading order

Within the framework of higher-twist collinear factorization, transverse momentum broadening for the final hadrons in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic $e+A$ collisions is studied at the next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbative QCD. Through explicit calculations of real and virtual corrections at twist-4, the transverse-momentum-weighted differential cross section due to double scattering is shown to factorize at NLO and can be expressed as a convolution of twist-4 nuclear parton correlation functions, the usual twist-2 fragmentation functions and hard parts which are finite and free of any divergences. A QCD evolution equation is also derived for the renormalized twist-4 quark-gluon correlation function which can be applied to future phenomenological studies of transverse momentum broadening and jet quenching at NLO.

Vortical fluid and $Λ$ spin correlations in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Fermions become polarized in a vortical fluid due to spin-vorticity coupling. The spin polarization density is proportional to the local fluid vorticity at the next-to-leading order of a gradient expansion in a quantum kinetic theory. Spin correlations of two $Λ$-hyperons can therefore reveal the vortical structure of the dense matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We employ a (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model with event-by-event fluctuating initial conditions from A MultiPhase Transport (AMPT) model to calculate the vorticity distributions and $Λ$ spin correlations. The azimuthal correlation of the transverse spin is shown to have a cosine form plus an offset due to a circular structure of the transverse vorticity around the beam direction and global spin polarization. The longitudinal spin correlation shows a structure of vortex-pairing in the transverse plane due to the convective flow of hot spots in the radial direction. The dependence on colliding energy, rapidity, centrality and sensitivity to the shear viscosity are also investigated.

Analytical and numerical Gubser solutions of the second-order hydrodynamics

Evolution of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) near equilibrium can be described by the second-order relativistic viscous hydrodynamic equations. Consistent and analytically verifiable numerical solutions are critical for phenomenological studies of the collective behavior of QGP in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. A novel analytical solution based on the conformal Gubser flow which is a boost-invariant solution with transverse fluid velocity is presented. Due to the non-linear nature of the equation, the analytical solution is non-perturbative and exhibits features that are rather distinct from solutions to usual linear hydrodynamic equations. It is used to verify with high precision the numerical solution with a newly developed state-of-the-art $(3+1)$-dimensional second-order viscous hydro code (CLVisc). The perfect agreement between the analytical and numerical solutions demonstrates the reliability of the numerical simulations with the second-order viscous corrections. This lays the foundation for future phenomenological studies that allow one to gain access to the second-order transport coefficients.

Decorrelation of anisotropic flows along the longitudinal direction

The initial energy density distribution and fluctuation in the transverse direction lead to anisotropic flows of final hadrons through collective expansion in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Fluctuations along the longitudinal direction, on the other hand, can result in decorrelation of anisotropic flows in different regions of pseudo rapidity ($η$). Decorrelation of the $2$nd and $3$rd order anisotropic flows with different $η$ gaps for final charged hadrons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is studied in an event-by-event (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic model with fully fluctuating initial conditions from A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model. The decorrelation of anisotropic flows of final hadrons with large $η$ gaps are found to originate from the spatial decorrelation along the longitudinal direction in the AMPT initial conditions through hydrodynamic evolution. The decorrelation is found to consist of both a linear twist and random fluctuation of the event-plane angles. The agreement between our results and recent CMS data in most centralities suggests that the string-like mechanism of initial parton production in AMPT model captures the initial longitudinal fluctuation that is responsible for the measured decorrelation of anisotropic flows in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC. Our predictions for Au+Au collisions at the highest RHIC energy show stronger longitudinal decorrelation, indicating larger longitudinal fluctuations at lower beam energies. Our study also calls into question some of the current experimental methods for measuring anisotropic flows and extraction of transport coefficients through comparisons to hydrodynamic simulations that do not include longitudinal fluctuations.

In this talk, we present our study within the LBT model in which we implement the complete set of elastic parton scattering processes. Longitudinal Decorrelation of Anisotropic Flows in Heavy-ion Collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Fluctuations in the initial transverse energy-density distribution lead to anisotropic flows as observed in central high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Studies of longitudinal fluctuations of the anisotropic flows can shed further light on the initial conditions and dynamical evolution of the hot quark-gluon matter in these collisions. Correlations between anisotropic flows with varying pseudorapidity gaps in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are investigated using both an event-by-event (3+1)-D ideal hydrodynamical model with fluctuating initial conditions and the a multiphase transport (AMPT) Monte Carlo model for high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Anisotropic flows at different pseudorapidities are found to become significantly decorrelated with increasing pseudo-rapidity gaps due to longitudinal fluctuations in the initial states of heavy-ion collisions. The longitudinal correlation of the elliptic flow shows a strong centrality dependence while the correlation of the triangular flow is independent of the centrality. Longitudinal fluctuations as a source of the decorrelation are further shown to consist of a twist or gradual rotation in flow angles between the forward and backward direction and additional fluctuations on top of the twist. Within the AMPT model, longitudinal correlations of anisotropic flows are also found to depend on the value of partonic cross sections. The implicatiosn of constraining the initial conditions and shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the partonic matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are also discussed.

Physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at very high energy

Heavy-ion collisions at very high colliding energies are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at the highest temperature obtainable in a laboratory setting. Experimental studies of these reactions can provide an unprecedented range of information on properties of the QGP at high temperatures. We report theoretical investigations of the physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at a future high-energy collider. These include initial parton production, collective expansion of the dense medium, jet quenching, heavy-quark transport, dissociation and regeneration of quarkonia, photon and dilepton production. We illustrate the potential of future experimental studies of the initial particle production and formation of QGP at the highest temperature to provide constraints on properties of strongly interaction matter.

Higher-twist contributions to the transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off large nuclei

Multiple scattering leads to transverse momentum broadening of the struck quark in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scatterings (SIDIS). Nuclear broadening of the transverse momentum squared at the leading twist is determined by the twist-four collinear quark-gluon correlation function of the target nucleus that is in turn related to the jet transport parameter inside the nuclear medium. The twist-six contributions to the transverse momentum broadening are calculated as power corrections $\sim 1/Q^2$. Such power corrections are found to have no extra nuclear enhancement beyond the twist-four matrix elements and are determined by the nuclear modification of collinear parton distribution and correlation functions. They become important for an accurate extraction of the jet transport parameter inside large nuclei and its scale evolution at intermediate values of the hard scale $Q^2$.

Initial Conditions for Modified DGLAP Evolution of the Modified Fragmentation Functions in Nuclear Medium

Initial conditions are required to solve medium modified DGLAP (mDGLAP) evolution equations for modified fragmentation functions due to multiple scatterings and parton energy loss. Such initial conditions should in principle include energy loss for partons at scale $Q_0$ above which mDGLAP evolution equations can be applied. Several models for the initial condition motivated by induced gluon bremsstrahlung in perturbative QCD are used to calculate the modified fragmentation functions in nuclear medium and to extract the jet transport parameter $\hat q$ from fits to experimental data in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclei. The model with a Poisson convolution of multiple gluon emissions is found to provide the overall best $χ^2$/d.o.f. fit to the HERMES data and gives a value of $\hat q_0 \approx 0.020 \pm 0.005$ GeV$^2$/fm at the center of a large nucleus.

Jet quenching and $γ$-jet correlation in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Medium modification of $γ$-tagged jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is investigated within a linearized Boltzmann transport model which includes both elastic parton scattering and induced gluon emission. In Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV, a $γ$-tagged jet is seen to lose 15\% of its energy at 0-10\% central collisions. Simulations also point to a sizable azimuthal angle broadening of $γ$-tagged jets at the tail of a distribution which should be measurable when experimental errors are significantly reduced. An enhancement at large $z_\text{jet}=p_L/E_{\text{jet}}$ in jet fragmentation function at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can be attributed to the dominance of leading particles in the reconstructed jet. A $γ-$tagged jet fragmentation function is shown to be more sensitive to jet quenching, therefore a better probe of the jet transport parameter.

Next-to-Leading QCD Factorization for Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering at Twist-4

Within the framework of a high-twist approach, we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD corrections to the transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive hadron production in deeply inelastic $e+A$ collisions, as well as lepton pair production in $p+A$ collisions. With explicit calculations of both real and virtual contributions, we verify, for the first time, the factorization theorem at twist 4 in NLO for the nuclear-enhanced transverse momentum weighted differential cross section and demonstrate the universality of the associated twist-4 quark-gluon correlation function. We also identify the QCD evolution equation for the twist-4 quark-gluon correlation function in a large nucleus, which can be solved to determine the scale dependence of the jet transport parameter in the study of jet quenching.

Nuclear suppression of azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off polarized targets

We extend the study of nuclear dependence of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions and azimuthal asymmetries to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) off polarized nuclear targets. We show that azimuthal asymmetries are suppressed for SIDIS off a polarized nuclear target relative to that off a polarized nucleon due to multiple scattering inside the nucleus. Using the value of transport parameter inside large nuclei extracted from jet quenching analyses in SIDIS off nuclear targets, we also present a numerical estimate of the nuclear suppression of the azimuthal asymmetry that might be useful to guide the future experimental studies of SIDIS off polarized nuclear targets.

Within the framework of a high-twist approach, we show the first complete next-to-leading order calculation of transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic $e+A$ scattering and Drell-Yan dilepton production in $p+A$ collisions. We demonstrate at one-loop level how QCD factorization holds for multiple scattering in nuclear medium, and the university of the associated quark-gluon correlation function. Our calculation also identifies QCD evolution equation for the quark-gluon correlation function, which determines the QCD factorization scale and energy dependence of jet transport parameter $\hat q$.

What hard probes tell us about the quark-gluon plasma: Theory

Azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS with polarized beam and/or target and their nuclear dependences

Using the formalism obtained from collinear expansion, we calculate the differential cross section and azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic lepton-nucleon (nucleus) scattering process $e^-+N (A) \to e^-+q+X$ with both polarized beam and polarized target up to twist-3. We derive the azimuthal asymmetries in terms of twist-3 parton correlation functions. We simplify the results by using the QCD equation of motion that leads to a set of relationships between different twist-3 functions. We further study the nuclear dependence of azimuthal asymmetries and show that they have similar suppression factors as those in the unpolarized reactions.

Berry curvature and 4-dimensional monopole in relativistic chiral kinetic equation

We derive a relativistic chiral kinetic equation with manifest Lorentz covariance from Wigner functions of spin-1/2 massless fermions in a constant background electromagnetic field. It contains vorticity terms and a 4-dimensional Euclidean Berry monopole which gives axial anomaly. By integrating out the zero-th component of the 4-momentum p, we reproduce the previous 3-dimensional results derived from the Hamiltonian approach, together with the newly derived vorticity terms. The phase space continuity equation has an anomalous source term proportional to the product of electric and magnetic fields ($F\tilde{F} \sim E.B$). This provides a unified interpretation of the chiral magnetic and vortical effects, chiral anomaly, Berry curvature, and the Berry monopole in the framework of Wigner functions.

Extracting jet transport coefficient from jet quenching at RHIC and LHC

Within five different approaches to parton propagation and energy loss in dense matter, a phenomenological study of experimental data on suppression of large $p_T$ single inclusive hadrons in heavy-ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC was carried out. The evolution of bulk medium used in the study for parton propagation was given by 2+1D or 3+1D hydrodynamic models which are also constrained by experimental data on bulk hadron spectra. Values for the jet transport parameter $\hat q$ at the center of the most central heavy-ion collisions are extracted or calculated within each model, with parameters for the medium properties that are constrained by experimental data on the hadron suppression factor $R_{AA}$. For a quark with initial energy of 10 GeV we find that $\hat q\approx 1.2 \pm 0.3$ GeV$^2$/fm at an initial time $τ_0=0.6$ fm/$c$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV/n and $\hat q\approx 1.9 \pm 0.7 $ GeV$^2$/fm in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76 $ TeV/n. Compared to earlier studies, these represent significant convergence on values of the extracted jet transport parameter, reflecting recent advances in theory and the availability of new experiment data from the LHC.

Relics of Minijets amid Anisotropic Flows in High-energy Heavy-ion Collisions

Two dimensional low-$p_T$ dihadron correlations in azimuthal angle $ϕ$ and pseudo-rapidity $η$ in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are investigated within both the HIJING Monte Carlo model and an event-by-event (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic model. Without final-state interaction and collective expansion, dihadron correlations from HIJING simulations have a typical structure from minijets that contains a near-side two-dimensional peak and an away-side ridge along the $η$-direction. In contrast, event-by-event (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic simulations with fluctuating initial conditions from the HIJING+AMPT model produce a strong dihadron correlation that has an away-side as well as a near-side ridge. Relics of intrinsic dihadron correlation from minijets in the initial conditions still remain as superimposed on the two ridges. By varying initial conditions from HIJING+AMPT, we study effects of minijets, non-vanishing initial flow and longitudinal fluctuation on the final state dihadron correlations. With a large rapidity gap, one can exclude near-side correlations from minijet relics and dihadron correlations can be described by the superposition of harmonic flows up to the 6th order. When long-range correlations with a large rapidity gap are subtracted from short-range correlations with a small rapidity gap, the remaining near-side dihadron correlations result solely from relics of minijets. Low transverse momentum hadron yields per trigger ($p_T^{\rm trig} <4$ GeV/$c$, $p_T^{\rm asso}<2$ GeV/$c$) in central heavy-ion collisions are significantly enhanced over that in p+p collisions while widths in azimuthal angle remain the same, in qualitative agreement with experimental data.

Chiral anomaly and local polarization effect from quantum kinetic approach

A power expansion scheme is set up to determine the Wigner function that satisfies the quantum kinetic equation for spin-1/2 charged fermions in a background electromagnetic field. Vector and axial-vector current induced by magnetic field and vorticity are obtained simultaneously from the Wigner function. The chiral magnetic and vortical effect and chiral anomaly are shown as natural consequences of the quantum kinetic equation. The axial-vector current induced by vorticity is argued to lead to a local polarization effect along the vorticity direction in heavy-ion collisions.

A quantitative comparison of the single gluon emission spectra as well as the energy loss distributions is given for a model system consisting of a uniform medium with a fixed length of L=2 fm and L=5 fm (the `Brick'). Sizable quantitative differences are found. The largest differences can be attributed to specific approximations that are made in the calculation of the radiation spectrum.

Effect of longitudinal fluctuation in event-by-event (3+1)D hydrodynamics

Hadron spectra and elliptic flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are studied in event-by-event (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic simulations with fluctuating initial conditions given by the AMPT Monte Carlo model. Both the coherent soft gluon production from wounded nucleons and incoherent mini-jet production in semi-hard parton scatterings are considered. These partons take part in parton cascade and are assumed to be locally thermalized. They provide the fluctuating initial conditions for hydrodynamic simulations with a Gaussian smearing. Effects of both transverse and longitudinal fluctuations are studied. The initial fluctuations along rapidity direction lead to expanding hot spots in longitudinal direction, which will reduce elliptic flow and the yield of particles at high transverse momentum. The intrinsic correlation introduced in the fluctuating initial conditions is also found to influence the di-hadron correlation of the final hadrons.

Effects of initial flow velocity fluctuation in event-by-event (3+1)D hydrodynamics

Hadron spectra and elliptic flow in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are studied within a (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic model with fluctuating initial conditions given by the AMPT Monte Carlo model. Results from event-by-event simulations are compared with experimental data at both RHIC and LHC energies. Fluctuations in the initial energy density come from not only the number of coherent soft interactions of overlapping nucleons but also incoherent semi-hard parton scatterings in each binary nucleon collision. Mini-jets from semi-hard parton scatterings are assumed to be locally thermalized through a Gaussian smearing and give rise to non-vanishing initial local flow velocities. Fluctuations in the initial flow velocities lead to harder transverse momentum spectra of final hadrons due to non-vanishing initial radial flow velocities. Initial fluctuations in rapidity distributions lead to expanding hot spots in the longitudinal direction and are shown to cause a sizable reduction of final hadron elliptic flow at large transverse momenta.

Such modification of final hadron spectra in p+A collisions is studied within HIJING 2.1 model which includes initial parton shadowing, transverse momentum broadening, parton flavor and momentum correlation inside the projectile through flavor and momentum conservation and fragmentation of multiple jets. They are shown to modify the partonic flavor content of final jets and momentum spectra of final hadrons in p+A collisions at the Large Hadron Collider.

Parton energy loss in cold nuclei

Within the generalized high-twist factorization formalism, we express the contribution from multiple parton scattering and induced gluon radiation to the DY dilepton spectra in terms of nuclear modified effective beam quark distribution function. We show that beam quark energy loss is characterized by jet transport parameter $\hat{q}$, which is related to the local gluon density of the medium. Using the value of $\hat{q}$ determined from the deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) data, we evaluate the nuclear modification factor in Drell-Yan process in p+A collisions. Effects of parton energy loss in the DY spectra are found negligible in the Fermilab experimental data at $E_{\rm lab}=800$ GeV relative to parton shadowing while the predicted suppression of DY spectra are significant at $E_{\rm lab}=120$ GeV.

Gluon shadowing and hadron production in heavy-ion collisions at LHC

The recently published first measurement of charged hadron multiplicity density at mid-rapidity $dN_{ch}/dη=1584 \pm 4 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 76 ({\rm sys.})$ in central $Pb+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 2.76$ TeV by the ALICE Experiment at LHC is in good agreement with the HIJING2.0 prediction within the experimental errors and theoretical uncertainties. The new data point is used to carry out a combined fit together with the RHIC data to reduce the uncertainty in the gluon shadowing parameter $s_{g}$ which controls the overall magnitude of gluon shadowing at small fractional momentum $x$ in HIJING2.0 model. Predictions on the centrality dependence of charged hadron multiplicity density at mid-rapidity with reduced uncertainty are given for $Pb+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ and 5.5 TeV. The centrality dependence is surprisingly independent of the colliding energy as compared to RHIC energy for most of centralities starting at $N_{\rm part}=50$ (100) at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ (7) TeV. However, it becomes stronger in peripheral collisions at higher colliding energies.

Initial fluctuations and dihadron and $γ$-hadron correlations in high-energy heavy ion collisions

Jets, Mach cone, hot spots, ridges, harmonic flow, dihadron and $γ$-hadron correlation in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Within the AMPT Monte Carlo model, hot spots in the initial transverse parton density are shown to lead to harmonic flows which all contribute to dihadron azimuthal correlation. The net back-to-back dihadron correlation after subtraction of harmonic flows still has a double-peak that is independent of the initial geometric triangularity at a fixed impact-parameter and unique to the structure of jet-induced Mach cone and expanding hot spots dragged by radial flow. The longitudinal structure of hot spots also leads to a near-side ridge in dihadron correlation with a large rapidity gap. By successively randomizing the azimuthal angle of the transverse momenta and positions of initial partons, one can isolate the effects of jet-induced medium excitation and expanding hot spots on the dihadron azimuthal correlation with both small and large rapidity gap. The double-peak in the net dihadron correlation is quantitatively different from that in $γ$-hadron that is free of the contributions from harmonic flow and hot spots and caused only by jet-induced Mach cone.

Mach cone induced by $γ$-triggered jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

MMedium excitation by jet shower propagation inside a quark-gluon plasma is studied within a linear Boltzmann transport and a multiphase transport model. Contrary to the naive expectation, it is the deflection of both the jet shower and the Mach-cone-like excitation in an expanding medium that is found to gives rise to a double-peak azimuthal particle distribution with respect to the initial jet direction. Such deflection is the strongest for hadron-triggered jets which are often produced close to the surface of dense medium due to trigger-bias and travel against or tangential to the radial flow. Without such trigger bias, the effect of deflection on $γ$-jet showers and their medium excitation is weaker. Comparative study of hadron and $γ$-triggered particle correlations can therefore reveal the dynamics of jet-induced medium excitation in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Parton Energy Loss and Modified Beam Quark Distribution Functions in Drell-Yan Process in p+A Collisions

Within the framework of generalized collinear factorization in perturbative QCD (pQCD), we study the effect of initial multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss in Drell-Yan (DY) process in proton-nucleus collisions. We express the contribution from multiple parton scattering and induced gluon radiation to the DY dilepton spectra in terms of nuclear modified effective beam quark distribution functions. The modification depends on the quark transport parameter in nuclear medium. This is similar to the final-state multiple parton scattering in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off large nuclei and leads to the suppression of the Drell-Yan cross section in $p+A$ relative to $p+p$ collisions. With the value of quark transport parameter determined from the nuclear modification of single-inclusive DIS hadron spectra as measured by the HERMES experiment, we calculate DY spectra in $p+A$ collisions and find the nuclear suppression due to beam parton energy loss negligible at the Fermilab energy $E_{\rm lab}$=800 GeV in the kinematic region as covered by the E866 experiment. Most of the observed nuclear suppression of DY spectra in E866 experiment can be described well by parton shadowing in target nuclei as given by the EPS08 parameterization. The effect of beam parton energy loss, however, becomes significant for DY lepton pairs with large beam parton momentum fraction $x^{\prime}$ or small target parton momentum fraction $x$. We also predict the DY cross section in $p+A$ collisions at lower beam proton energy $E_{\rm lab}$=120 GeV and show significant suppression due to initial state parton energy loss at moderately large $x^{\prime}$ where the effect of parton shadowing is very small.

We study how such polarization evolves via multiple scattering in a viscous quark-gluon plasma with an initial laminar flow. The final polarization is found to be sensitive to the viscosity and the initial shear of local longitudinal flow.

Suppression of high $p_{T}$ hadrons in $Pb+Pb$ Collisions at LHC

Nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}(p_{T})$ for large transverse momentum pion spectra in $Pb+Pb$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV is predicted within the NLO perturbative QCD parton model. Effect of jet quenching is incorporated through medium modified fragmentation functions within the higher-twist approach. The jet transport parameter that controls medium modification is proportional to the initial parton density and the coefficient is fixed by the RHIC data on suppression of large $p_{T}$ hadron spectra. Data on charged hadron multiplicity $dN_{ch}/dη=1584 \pm 80$ in central $Pb+Pb$ collisions from the ALICE Experiment at the LHC are used to constrain the initial parton density both for determining the jet transport parameter and the 3+1D ideal hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk matter that is employed for the calculation of $R_{PbPb}(p_{T})$ for neutral pions.

Bulk matter evolution and extraction of jet transport parameter in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC

Within the picture of jet quenching induced by multiple parton scattering and gluon bremsstrahlung, medium modification of parton fragmentation functions and therefore the suppression of large transverse momentum hadron spectra are controlled by both the value and the space-time profile of the jet transport parameter along the jet propagation path. Experimental data on single hadron suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC energy are analyzed within the higher-twist (HT) approach to the medium modified fragmentation functions and the next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) parton model. Assuming that the jet transport parameter $\hat q$ is proportional to the particle number density in both QGP and hadronic phase, experimental data on jet quenching in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclear targets can provide guidance on $\hat q_{h}$ in the hot hadronic matter. One can then study the dependence of extracted initial value of jet quenching parameter $\hat q_{0}$ at initial time $τ_{0}$ on the bulk medium evolution. Effects of transverse expansion, radial flow, phase transition and non-equilibrium evolution are examined. The extracted values are found to vary from $\hat q_{0}τ_{0}= 0.54$ GeV$^{2}$ in the (1+3)d ideal hydrodynamic model to 0.96 GeV$^{2}$ in a cascade model, with the main differences coming from the initial non-equilibrium evolution and the later hadronic evolution. The overall contribution to jet quenching from the hadronic phase, about 22-44%, is found to be significant. Therefore, realistic description of the early non-equilibrium parton evolution and later hadronic interaction will be critical for accurate extraction of the jet transport parameter in the strongly interacting QGP phase in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Dihadron and gamma-hadron correlations from jet-induced medium excitation in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Jet propagation is shown to produce Mach-cone-like medium excitation inside a quark-gluon plasma. Nuclear dependence of azimuthal asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering

Within the framework of a generalized factorization, semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) cross sections can be expressed as a series of products of collinear hard parts and transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distributions and correlations. The azimuthal asymmetry <cosϕ>$ of unpolarized SIDIS in the small transverse momentum region will depend on both twist-2 and 3 TMD quark distributions in target nucleons or nuclei. Nuclear broadening of these twist-2 and 3 quark distributions due to final-state multiple scattering in nuclei is investigated and the nuclear dependence of the azimuthal asymmetry $<\cosϕ>$ is studied. It is shown that the azimuthal asymmetry is suppressed by multiple parton scattering and the transverse momentum dependence of the suppression depends on the relative shape of the twist-2 and 3 quark distributions in the nucleon. A Gaussian ansatz for TMD twist-2 and 3 quark distributions in nucleon is used to demonstrate the nuclear dependence of the azimuthal asymmetry and to estimate the smearing effect due to fragmentation.

Quark splitting in non-trivial θ-vacuum

Quark splitting in non-trivial $θ$-vacuum with a given helicity is investigated in pQCD with a modified quark propagator. We found that the quark splitting functions were modified by the presence of a topologically non-trivial QCD background field, though there is no explicit helicity flip associated with the radiative processes. The interaction with the topological non-trivial field leads to the degeneracy of the quark splitting functions for left- and right-handed quarks. Such degeneracy can lead to imbalance of left- and right-handed quarks in quark jet showers. We also discuss phenomenological consequences of such imbalance if there exists non-trivial topological gluon field configuration in heavy-ion collisions.

Mini-jet thermalization and diffusion of transverse momentum correlation in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Transverse momentum correlation in azimuthal angle of produced hadrons due to mini-jets are studied first within the HIJING Monte Carlo model in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Jet quenching in the early stage of thermalization is shown to lead to significant diffusion (broadening) of the correlation. Evolution of the transverse momentum density fluctuation that gives rise to such correlation in azimuthal angle in the later stage of heavy-ion collisions is further investigated within a linearized diffusion-like equation and is shown to be determined by the shear viscosity of the evolving dense matter. Such a diffusion equation for the transverse momentum fluctuation is solved with initial values given by HIJING and together with the hydrodynamic equation for the bulk medium. The final transverse momentum correlation in azimuthal angle is calculated along the freeze-out hyper-surface and is found further diffused for larger values of shear viscosity to entropy density ratio $η/s \sim 0.2-0.4$. Therefore the final transverse momentum correlation in azimuthal angle can be used to study the thermalization of mini-jets in the early stage of heavy-ion collisions and the viscous effect in the hydrodynamic evolution of the strongly coupled quark gluon plasma.

LPM Interference and Cherenkov-like Gluon Bremsstrahlung in Dense Matter

Gluon bremsstrahlung induced by multiple parton scattering in a finite dense medium has a unique angular distribution with respect to the initial parton direction. A dead-cone structure with an opening angle $θ^2_0 \approx 2(1-z)/(zLE)$ for gluons with fractional energy $z$ arises from the Landau-Pomeranchuck-Migdal (LPM) interference. In a medium where the gluon's dielectric constant is $ε>1$, the LPM interference pattern is shown to become Cherenkov-like with an increased opening angle determined by the dielectric constant $\cos^2θ_c=z+(1-z)/ε$. For a large dielectric constant $ε\gg 1+2/z^2LE$, the corresponding total radiative parton energy loss is about twice that from normal gluon bremsstrahlung. Implications of this Cherenkov-like gluon bremsstrahlung to the jet correlation pattern in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is discussed.

Modified Fragmentation Function from Quark Recombination

Within the framework of the constituent quark model, it is shown that the single hadron fragmentation function of a parton can be expressed as a convolution of shower diquark or triquark distribution function and quark recombination probability, if the interference between amplitudes of quark recombination with different momenta is neglected. The recombination probability is determined by the hadron's wavefunction in the constituent quark model. The shower diquark or triquark distribution functions of a fragmenting jet are defined in terms of overlapping matrices of constituent quarks and parton field operators. They are similar in form to dihadron or trihadron fragmentation functions in terms of parton operator and hadron states. Extending the formalism to the field theory at finite temperature, we automatically derive contributions to the effective single hadron fragmentation function from the recombination of shower and thermal constituent quarks. Such contributions involve single or diquark distribution functions which in turn can be related to diquark or triquark distribution functions via sum rules. We also derive QCD evolution equations for quark distribution functions that in turn determine the evolution of the effective jet fragmentation functions in a thermal medium.

Multiple Parton Scattering in Nuclei: Heavy Quark Energy Loss and Modified Fragmentation Functions

Multiple scattering, induced radiative energy loss and modified fragmentation functions of a heavy quark in nuclear matter are studied within the framework of generalized factorization in perturbative QCD. Modified heavy quark fragmentation functions and energy loss are derived in detail with illustration of the mass dependencies of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal interference effects and heavy quark energy loss. Due to the quark mass dependence of the gluon formation time, the nuclear size dependencies of nuclear modification of the heavy quark fragmentation function and heavy quark energy loss are found to change from a linear to a quadratic form when the initial energy and momentum scale are increased relative to the quark mass. The radiative energy loss of the heavy quark is also significantly suppressed due to limited cone of gluon radiation imposed by the mass. Medium modification of the heavy quark fragmentation functions is found to be limited to the large $z$ region due to the form of heavy quark fragmentation functions in vacuum.

Spin Alignment of Vector Mesons in Non-central A+A Collisions

We discuss the consequence of global polarization of the produced quarks in non-central heavy-ion collisions on the spin alignment of vector mesons. We show that the alignment is quite different for different hadronization scenarios. These results can be tested directly by measuring the vector mesons' alignment through angular distributions of the decay products with respect to the reaction plane. Such angular distributions will give rise to azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ of the decay products in the collision frame. Constraints provided by the data on the azimuthal anisotropy of hadron spectra at RHIC points to a quark recombination scenario of hadronization.

Evolution of the parton dihadron fragmentation functions

Quark and gluon parton dihadron fragmentation functions and their evolution are studied in the process of e+e- annihilation. We provide definitions of such dihadron fragmentation functions in terms of parton matrix elements and derive the momentum sum rules and their connection to single hadron fragmentation functions. We parameterize results from the Lund Monte Carlo model JETSET as the initial conditions for the parton dihadron fragmentation functions at the scale Q_0^2=2 GeV^2. The evolution equations for the quark and gluon fragmentation functions are solved numerically and the results at different higher scales Q^2 agree well with JETSET results. The importance of the input from the single fragmentation functions is pointed out.

High Pt hadron-hadron correlations

We propose the formulation of a dihadron fragmentation function in terms of parton matrix elements. Under the collinear factorization approximation and facilitated by the cut-vertex technique, the two hadron inclusive cross section at leading order (LO) in e+ e- annihilation is shown to factorize into a short distance parton cross section and the long distance dihadron fragmentation function. We also derive the DGLAP evolution equation of this function at leading log. The evolution equation for the non-singlet and singlet quark fragmentation function and the gluon fragmentation function are solved numerically with the initial condition taken from event generators. Modifications to the dihadron fragmentation function from higher twist corrections in DIS off nuclei are computed. Results are presented for cases of physical interest.

The dihadron fragmentation function and its evolution

Dihadron fragmentation functions and their evolution are studied in the process of $e^+e^-$ annihilation. Under the collinear factorization approximation and facilitated by the cut-vertex technique, the two hadron inclusive cross section at leading order (LO) is shown to factorize into a short distance parton cross section and a long distance dihadron fragmentation function. We provide the definition of such a dihadron fragmentation function in terms of parton matrix elements and derive its DGLAP evolution equation at leading log. The evolution equation for the non-singlet quark fragmentation function is solved numerically with a simple ansatz for the initial condition and results are presented for cases of physical interest.

Multiple Parton Scattering in Nuclei: Beyond Helicity Amplitude Approximation

Multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off heavy nuclei is studied within the framework of generalized factorization in perturbative QCD with a complete calculation beyond the helicity amplitude (or soft bremsstrahlung) approximation. Such a calculation gives rise to new corrections to the modified quark fragmentation functions. The effective parton energy loss is found to be reduced by a factor of 5/6 from the result of helicity amplitude approximation.

Probe Initial Parton Density and Formation Time via Jet Quenching

Medium modification of jet fragmentation function due to multiple scattering and induced gluon radiation leads directly to jet quenching or suppression of leading particle distribution from jet fragmentation. One can extract an effective total parton energy loss which can be related to the total transverse momentum broadening. For an expanding medium, both are shown to be sensitive to the initial parton density and formation time. Therefore, one can extract the initial parton density and formation time from simultaneous measurements of parton energy loss and transverse momentum broadening. Implication of the recent experimental data on effects of detailed balance in parton energy loss is also discussed.

Systematic Study of High p_T Hadron Spectra in pp, pA and AA Collisions from SPS to RHIC Energies

High-$p_T$ particle spectra in $p+p$ ($\bar p + p$), $p+A$ and $A+B$ collisions are calculated within a QCD parton model in which intrinsic transverse momentum, its broadening due to initial multiple parton scattering, and jet quenching due to parton energy loss inside a dense medium are included phenomenologically. The intrinsic $k_T$ and its broadening in $p+A$ and $A+B$ collisions due to initial multiple parton scattering are found to be very important at low energies ($\sqrt{s}<50$ GeV). Comparisons with $S+S$, $S+Au$ and $Pb+Pb$ data with different centrality cuts show that the differential cross sections of large transverse momentum pion production ($p_T>1$ GeV/$c$) in $A+B$ collisions scale very well with the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (modulo effects of multiple initial scattering). This indicates that semi-hard parton scattering is the dominant particle production mechanism underlying the hadron spectra at moderate $p_T \stackrel{>}{\sim} 1$ GeV/$c$. However, there is no evidence of jet quenching or parton energy loss. Within the parton model, one can exclude an effective parton energy loss $dE_q/dx>0.01$ GeV/fm and a mean free path $λ_q< 7$ fm from the experimental data of $A+B$ collisions at the SPS energies. Predictions for high $p_T$ particle spectra in $p+A$ and $A+A$ collisions with and without jet quenching at the RHIC energy are also given. Uncertainties due to initial multiple scattering and nuclear shadowing of parton distributions are also discussed.

Evolution of Parton Fragmentation Functions at Finite Temperature

The first order correction to the parton fragmentation functions in a thermal medium is derived in the leading logarithmic approximation in the framework of thermal field theory. The medium-modified evolution equations of the parton fragmentation functions are also derived. It is shown that all infrared divergences, both linear and logarithmic, in the real processes are canceled among themselves and by corresponding virtual corrections. The evolution of the quark number and the energy loss (or gain) induced by the thermal medium are investigated.

Jet Tomography of Hot and Cold Nuclear Matter

Medium modification of parton fragmentation functions induced by multiple scattering and gluon bremsstrahlung is shown to describe the recent HERMES data in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) very well, providing the first evidence of $A^{2/3}$-dependence of the modification. The energy loss is found to be $<dE/dL> \approx 0.5$ GeV/fm for a 10-GeV quark in a $Au$ nucleus. Including the effect of expansion, analysis of the $π^0$ spectra in central $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=130$ GeV yields an averaged energy loss equivalent to $<dE/dL> \approx 7.3$ GeV/fm in a static medium. Predictions for central $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV are also given.

Modified Fragmentation Function and Jet Quenching at RHIC

Medium modification of jet fragmentation functions and parton energy loss in cold and hot matter are reviewed. The predicted nuclear modification of the jet fragmentation function agrees well with the recent HERMES data with a resultant energy loss dE/dx approximately 0.5 GeV/fm. From the the recent PHENIX data of high p_T pi_0 spectra in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=130 GeV, one extracts an energy loss for a 10 GeV parton that is equivalent to dE/dx=7.3 GeV/fm in a static medium with the same gluon density as in the initial stage of the collision at tau_0=0.2 fm/c. Constraints on jet quenching by the central rapidity density of charged hadrons is also discussed.

Multiple Parton Scattering in Nuclei: Twist-Four Nuclear Matrix Elements and Off-Forward Parton Distributions

Multiple parton scatterings inside a large nucleus generally involve higher-twist nuclear parton matrix elements. The gluon bremsstrahlung induced by multiple scattering depends not only on direct parton matrix elements but also on momentum-crossed ones, due to the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal interference effect. We show that both types of twist-four nuclear parton matrix elements can be factorized approximately into the product of twist-two nucleon matrix elements in the limit of extremely large nuclei, $A\to \infty$, as assumed in previous studies. Due to the correlative nature of the twist-four matrix elements under consideration, it is actually the off-forward parton distributions that appear naturally in this decomposition, rather than the ordinary diagonal distributions probed in deeply-inelastic scattering. However, we argue that the difference between these two distribution classes is small in certain kinematic regimes. In these regions, the twist-four nuclear parton matrix elements are evaluated numerically and compared to the factorized form for different nuclear sizes within a schematic model of the two-nucleon correlation function. The nuclear size dependence is found to be $A^{4/3}$ in the limit of large $A$, as expected. We find that the factorization is reasonably good when the momentum fraction carried by the gluon field is moderate. The deviation can be more than a factor of 2, however, for small gluon momentum fractions, where the gluon distribution is very large.

Interplay of soft and hard processes and hadron $p_T$ spectra in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions

Motivated by a schematic model of multiple parton scattering within the Glauber formalism, the transverse momentum spectra in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions are analyzed in terms of a nuclear modification factor with respect to $pp$ collisions. The existing data at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) energies are shown to be consistent with the picture of Glauber multiple scattering in which the interplay between soft and hard processes and the effect of absorptive processes lead to nontrivial nuclear modification of the particle spectra. Relative to the additive model of incoherent hard scattering, the spectra are enhanced at large $p_T$ (hard) by multiple scattering while suppressed at low $p_T$ (soft) by absorptive correction with the transition occurring at around a scale $p_0\sim 1-2$ GeV/$c$ that separates soft and hard processes. Around the same scale, the $p_T$ spectra in $pp$ collisions also change from an exponential form at low $p_T$ to a power-law behavior at high $p_T$. At very large $p_T\gg p_0$, the nuclear enhancement is shown to decrease like $1/p_T^2$. Implications of these nuclear effects on the study of jet quenching, parton thermalization and collective radial flow in high-energy $AA$ collisions are discussed.

Monte Carlo Models: Quo Vadimus?

Coherence, multiple scattering and the interplay between soft and hard processes are discussed. These physics phenomena are essential for understanding the nuclear dependences of rapidity density and $p_T$ spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The RHIC data have shown the onset of hard processes and indications of high $p_T$ spectra suppression due to parton energy loss. Within the pQCD parton model, the combination of azimuthal anisotropy ($v_2$) and hadron spectra suppression at large $p_T$ can help one to determine the initial gluon density in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC.

Multiple Parton Scattering in Nuclei: Parton Energy Loss

Multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss is studied in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclei. The effect of multiple scattering of a highly off-shell quark and the induced parton energy loss is expressed in terms of the modification to the quark fragmentation functions. We derive such modified quark fragmentation functions and their QCD evolution equations in DIS using generalized factorization of higher twist parton distributions. We consider double-hard, hard-soft parton scattering as well as their interferences in the same framework. The final result, which depends on both the diagonal and off-diagonal twist-four parton distributions in nuclei, demonstrates clearly the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal interference features and predicts a unique nuclear modification of the quark fragmentation functions.

Parton Energy Loss with Detailed Balance

Stimulated gluon emission and thermal absorption in addition to induced radiation are considered for an energetic parton propagating inside a quark- gluon plasma. In the presence of thermal gluons, stimulated emission reduces while absorption increases the parton's energy. The net effect is a reduction of the parton energy loss. Though decreasing asymptotically as $T/E$ with the parton energy, the relative reduction is found to be important for intermediate energies. The modified energy dependence of the energy loss will affect the shape of suppression of moderately high $p_T$ hadrons due to jet quenching in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Dynamical Screening and Radiative Parton Energy Loss in a Quark-gluon Plasma

Dynamical screening in the magnetic part of the one-gluon exchange interaction is included in the study of radiative energy loss of a fast parton propagating inside a quark-gluon plasma. As a result the final radiative energy loss is about twice as large as when only the electric part of one-gluon exchange interaction is considered. A non-perturbative magnetic screening mass is also used in the estimate of the mean-free-path of parton scattering in a hot QCD matter.

Jet Quenching and Azimuthal Anisotropy of Large $p_T$ Spectra in Non-central High-energy Heavy-ion Collisions

Parton energy loss inside a dense medium leads to the suppression of large $p_T$ hadrons and can also cause azimuthal anisotropy of hadron spectra at large transverse momentum in non-central high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Such azimuthal anisotropy is studied qualitatively in a parton model for heavy-ion collisions at the RHIC energies. The coefficient $v_2(p_T)$ of the elliptic anisotropy at large $p_T$ is found to be very sensitive to parton energy loss. It decreases slowly with $p_T$ contrary to its low $p_T$ behavior where $v_2$ increases very rapidly with $p_T$. The turning point signals the onset of contributions of hard processes and the magnitude of parton energy loss. The centrality dependence of $v_2(p_T)$ is shown to be sensitive to both size and density dependence of the parton energy loss and the later can also be studied via variation of the colliding energy. The anisotropy coefficient $v_2/ε$ normalized by the spatial ellipticity $ε$ is found to decrease significantly toward semi-peripheral collisions, differing from the hydrodynamic results for low $p_T$ hadrons. Constrained by the existing WA98 experimental data at the SPS energy on parton energy loss, both hadron spectra suppression and azimuthal anisotropy at high $p_T$ are predicted to vanish for $b>$7-8 fm in $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$130-200 GeV when the hadron rapidity density per unit area of the initial overlapped region is less than what is achieved in the central $Pb+Pb$ collisions at the SPS energy.

High p_T hadron spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

We calculate the hadron spectra in high-energy pp, pA and AA collisions within a pQCD parton model. Analyses of experimental data show that the modification of the spectra in pA and AA as compared to that in $pp$ collisions is consistent with multiple parton scattering scenario and is dictated by the transition from absorptive soft interaction at low p_T to incoherent hard parton scattering at high p_T. This analysis not only sheds new light on the limits to the physics analysis based on thermal fire-ball models but also provides a more quantitative baseline results on which one can study the effects of parton energy loss in the hadron spectra at high p_T.

Enhancement of Intermediate Mass Dileptons From Charm Decays At SPS Energies

We study the dimuon yield from open charm decays in the intermediate mass region(IMR) in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN-SPS energy. We find that final state rescatterings which broaden the $m_T$ spectrum of charmed mesons can enrich the part of the phase space covered by the NA50 experiment, thus leading to an apparent enhancement of IMR dileptons within the acceptance of the experiment. Such an enhancement increases with the dimuon invariant mass and the single muon energy cut-off.

Dilepton and Photon Productions from a Coherent Pion Oscillation

Since the electromagnetic current for a pion system coincides with the third component of the isovector current, the isospin angular oscillation of a coherent field can be a significant source for the electromagnetic emissions. We study the characteristic dilepton and photon emissions from the classical pion field oscillation in the QCD vacuum. The general analytical solution obtained in the nonlinear sigma model is used to calculate the electromagnetic current density, which exhibits a light-front singularity and decreases rapidly as inverse square of the proper time due to a longitudinal expansion. The momentum and invariant mass spectra of the direct photon and dilepton are found to be a sensitive probe of the space-time evolution of the chiral condensate field.

pQCD-based Approach to Parton Production and Equilibration in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions

A pQCD-based model for parton production and equilibration in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. The model combines pQCD processes including initial and final state radiations together with string phenomenology for nonperturbative soft processes. Nuclear effects on the initial parton production, such as multiple parton scattering and nuclear shadowing of parton distribution functions are considered. Comparisons with existing data are made and further tests of the model to constrain model parameters are proposed. With the obtained space-time history of the parton production, evolution of the minijet gas toward a fully equilibrated parton plasma is studied. Perturbative Gluon Shadowing in Heavy Nuclei

We study how much gluon shadowing can be perturbatively generated through the modified QCD evolution in heavy nuclei. The evolution of small-$x$ gluons is investigated within the semiclassical approximation. The method of characteristics is used to evaluate the shadowed distributions in low-$Q$ and small-$x$ region. In solving the modified evolution equation, we model in simultaneously fusions from independent constituents and from the same constituent, both in a proton and in a large loosely bound nucleus of $A\sim 200$. In addition to the actual distributions at small $x$, we study the ratios of the distributions at an initial scale $Q_0 = 2$ GeV, and show that a strong nuclear shadowing can follow from the modified QCD evolution.
