Disentangling the Regge cut and Regge pole in perturbative QCD

The high-energy limit of gauge-theory amplitudes features both a Regge pole and Regge cuts. We show how to disentangle these, and hence how to determine the Regge trajectory beyond two loops. While the nonplanar part of multiple Reggeon $t$-channel exchange forms a Regge cut, the planar part contributes to the pole along with the single Reggeon. With this, we find that the infrared singularities of the trajectory are given by the cusp anomalous dimension. By matching to recent QCD results, we determine the quark and gluon impact factors to two loops and the Regge trajectory to three loops.

Endpoint factorization and next-to-leading power resummation of gluon thrust

Endpoint divergences in the convolution integrals appearing in next-to-leading-power factorization theorems prevent a straightforward application of standard methods to resum large logarithmic power-suppressed corrections in collider physics. We study the power-suppressed configuration of the thrust distribution in the two-jet region, where a gluon-initiated jet recoils against a quark-antiquark pair. With the aid of operatorial endpoint factorization conditions, we derive a factorization formula where the individual terms are free from endpoint divergences and can be written in terms of renormalized hard, (anti) collinear, and soft functions in four dimensions. This framework enables us to perform the first resummation of the endpoint-divergent SCET$_{\rm I}$ observables at the leading logarithmic accuracy using exclusively renormalization-group methods.

High-energy limit of $2\to 2$ scattering amplitudes at NNLL

The high-energy limit of $2\to 2$ scattering amplitudes offers an excellent setting to explore the universal features of gauge theories. At Leading Logarithmic (LL) accuracy the partonic amplitude is governed by Regge poles in the complex angular momentum plane. Beyond LL, Regge cuts in this plane begin to play an important role. Specifically, the real part of the amplitude at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy presents for the first time both a Regge pole and a Regge cut. Analysing this tower of logarithms and computing it explicitly through four loops we are able to systematically separate between the Regge pole and the Regge cut. The former involves two fundamental parameters, namely the gluon Regge trajectory and impact factors. We explain how to consistently define the impact factors at two loops and the Regge trajectory at three loops. We confirm that the singularities of the trajectory are given by the cusp anomalous dimension. We also show that the Regge-cut contribution at four loop is nonplanar.

Scattering amplitudes in the Regge limit and the soft anomalous dimension through four loops

Using rapidity evolution equations we study two-to-two gauge-theory scattering amplitudes in the Regge limit. We carry out explicit computations at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy through four loops and present new results for both infrared-singular and finite contributions to the amplitude. New techniques are devised in order to derive the colour structure stemming from three-Reggeon exchange diagrams in terms of commutators of channel operators, obtaining results that are valid for any gauge group, and apply to scattered particles in any colour representation. We also elucidate the separation between contributions to the Regge cut and Regge pole in the real part of the amplitude to all loop orders. We show that planar contributions due to multiple-Reggeon exchange diagrams can be factorised as a Regge pole along with the single-Reggeon exchange, and when this is done, the singular part of the gluon Regge trajectory is directly determined by the cusp anomalous dimension. We explicitly compute the Regge cut component of the amplitude through four loops and show that it is non-planar. From a different perspective, the new results provide important information on soft singularities in general kinematics beyond the planar limit: by comparing the computed corrections to the general form of the four-loop soft anomalous dimension we derive powerful constraints on its kinematic dependence, opening the way for a bootstrap-based determination.

Snowmass 2021 White Paper: Resummation for future colliders

Resummation techniques are essential for high-precision phenomenology at current and future high-energy collider experiments. Perturbative computations of cross sections often suffer from large logarithmic corrections, which must be resummed to all orders to restore the reliability of predictions from first principles. The precise understanding of the all-order structure of field theories allows for fundamental tests of the Standard Model and new physics searches. In this white paper, we review recent progress in modern resummation techniques and outline future directions. In particular, we focus on the resummation beyond leading power, the joint resummation of different classes of logarithms relevant for jets and their substructure, small-$x$ resummation in the high-energy regime and the QCD fragmentation process in the small-$z_h$ limit.

The Soft Anomalous Dimension at four loops in the Regge Limit

The soft anomalous dimension governs the infrared divergences of scattering amplitudes in general kinematics to all orders in perturbation theory. By comparing the recent Regge-limit results for $2\to2$ scattering (through Next-to-Next-to-Leading Logarithms) in full colour to a general form for the soft anomalous dimension at four loops we derive powerful constraints on its kinematic dependence, opening the way for a bootstrap-based determination.

Threshold resummation of quark-gluon partonic channels at next-to-leading power

We discuss recent progress concerning the resummation of large logarithms at next-to-leading power (NLP) in scattering processes near threshold. We begin by briefly reviewing the diagrammatic and SCET approach, which are used to derive factorization theorems for physical observables in this kinematic limit. Then, we focus on the quark-gluon channel in deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan. We show that the use of consistency conditions for the cancellation of leading poles in the hadronic cross section can be used to achieve the resummation of large leading logarithms (LLs) at NLP, both within diagrammatic and SCET methods. In this context it is also possible to investigate the problem of endpoint divergences appearing at NLP in SCET, and relate its solution to the concept of re-factorization.

Threshold resummation of new partonic channels at next-to-leading power

Collider observables involving heavy particles are subject to large logarithmic terms near threshold, which must be summed to all orders in perturbation theory to obtain sensible results. Relatively recently, this resummation has been extended to next-to-leading power in the threshold variable, using a variety of approaches. In this paper, we consider partonic channels that turn on only at next-to-leading power, and show that it is possible to resum leading logarithms using well-established diagrammatic techniques in Quantum Chromodynamics. We first consider deep inelastic scattering, where we reproduce the results of a recent study using an effective theory approach. Next, we consider the quark-gluon channel in both Drell-Yan and Higgs boson production, showing that an explicit all-order form for the leading logarithmic partonic cross section can be obtained. Our results agree with previous conjectures based on fixed-order results.

Threshold factorization of the Drell-Yan process at next-to-leading power

We present a factorization theorem valid near the kinematic threshold $z=Q^2/\hat{s}\to 1$ of the partonic Drell-Yan process $q\bar q\toγ^*+X$ for general subleading powers in the $(1-z)$ expansion. We then consider the specific case of next-to-leading power. We discuss the emergence of collinear functions, which are a key ingredient to factorization starting at next-to-leading power. We calculate the relevant collinear functions at $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ by employing an operator matching equation and we compare our results to the expansion-by-regions computation up to the next-to-next-to-leading order, finding agreement. Factorization holds only before the dimensional regulator is removed, due to a divergent convolution when the collinear and soft functions are first expanded around $d=4$ before the convolution is performed. This demonstrates an issue for threshold resummation beyond the leading-logarithmic accuracy at next-to-leading power.

Two-parton scattering amplitudes in the Regge limit to high loop orders

We study two-to-two parton scattering amplitudes in the high-energy limit of perturbative QCD by iteratively solving the BFKL equation. This allows us to predict the imaginary part of the amplitude to leading-logarithmic order for arbitrary $t$-channel colour exchange. The corrections we compute correspond to ladder diagrams with any number of rungs formed between two Reggeized gluons. Our approach exploits a separation of the two-Reggeon wavefunction, performed directly in momentum space, between a soft region and a generic (hard) region. The former component of the wavefunction leads to infrared divergences in the amplitude and is therefore computed in dimensional regularization; the latter is computed directly in two transverse dimensions and is expressed in terms of single-valued harmonic polylogarithms of uniform weight. By combining the two we determine exactly both infrared-divergent and finite contributions to the two-to-two scattering amplitude order-by-order in perturbation theory. We study the result numerically to 13 loops and find that finite corrections to the amplitude have a finite radius of convergence which depends on the colour representation of the $t$-channel exchange.

$Z^\prime$ models with less-minimal flavour violation

We study the phenomenology of simplified $Z^\prime$ models with a global $U(2)^3$ flavour symmetry in the quark sector, broken solely by the Standard Model Yukawa couplings. This flavour symmetry, known as less-minimal flavour violation, protects $ΔF=2$ processes from dangerously large new physics (NP) effects, and at the same time provides a free complex phase in $b\to s$ transitions, allowing for an explanation of the hints for additional direct CP violation in kaon decays ($ε^\prime/ε$) and in hadronic $B$-decays ($B\to Kπ$ puzzle). Furthermore, once the couplings of the $Z^\prime$ boson to the leptons are included, it is possible to address the intriguing hints for NP (above the 5$\,σ$ level) in $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$ transitions. Taking into account all flavour observables in a global fit, we find that $ε^\prime/ε$, the $B\to Kπ$ puzzle and $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$ data can be explained simultaneously. Sizeable CP violation in $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$ observables, in particular $A_8$, is predicted, which can be tested in the near future, and an explanation of the $B\to Kπ$ and $ε^\prime/ε$ puzzles leads to effects in di-jet tails at the LHC, that are not far below the current limits. Once $b\to s \ell^+\ell^-$ is included, cancellations in di-muon tails, possibly by a second $Z^\prime$, are required by LHC data.

Correlating $ε^\prime/ε$ to hadronic $B$ decays via $U(2)^3$ flavour symmetry

There are strong similarities between charge-parity (CP) violating observables in hadronic $B$ decays (in particular $ΔA^-_{\rm CP}$ in $B\to Kπ$) and direct CP violation in Kaon decays ($ε^\prime$): All these observables are very sensitive to new physics (NP) which is at the same time CP and isospin violating (i.e. NP with complex couplings which are different for up quarks and down quarks). Intriguingly, both the measurements of $ε^\prime$ and $ΔA^-_{\rm CP}$ show deviations from their Standard Model predictions, calling for a common explanation (the latter is known as the $B\to Kπ$ puzzle). For addressing this point, we parametrize NP using a gauge invariant effective field theory approach combined with a global $U(2)^3$ flavor symmetry in the quark sector (also known as less-minimal flavour violation). We first determine the operators which can provide a common explanation of $ε^\prime$ and $ΔA^-_{\rm CP}$ and then perform a global fit of their Wilson coefficients to the data from hadronic $B$ decays. Here we also include e.g. the recently measured CP asymmetry in $B_s\to KK$ as well as the purely isospin violating decay $B_s\toϕρ^0$, finding a consistent NP pattern providing a very good fit to data. Furthermore, we can at the same time explain $ε^\prime/ε$ for natural values of the free parameters within our $U(2)^3$ flavour approach, and this symmetry gives interesting predictions for hadronic decays involving $b\to d$ transitions.

Leading-logarithmic threshold resummation of Higgs production in gluon fusion at next-to-leading power

We sum the leading logarithms $α_s^n \ln^{2 n-1}(1-z)$, n=1,2,... near the kinematic threshold $z=m_H^2/\hat{s}\to 1$ at next-to-leading power in the expansion in (1-z) for Higgs production in gluon fusion. We highlight the new contributions compared to Drell-Yan production in quark-antiquark annihilation and show that the final result can be obtained to all orders by the substitution of the colour factor $C_F\to C_A$, confirming previous fixed-order results and conjectures. We also provide a numerical analysis of the next-to-leading power leading logarithms, which indicates that they are numerically relevant.

Infrared singularities of QCD scattering amplitudes in the Regge limit to all orders

Scattering amplitudes of partons in QCD contain infrared divergences which can be resummed to all orders in terms of an anomalous dimension. Independently, in the limit of high-energy forward scattering, large logarithms of the energy can be resummed using Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov theory. We use the latter to analyze the infrared-singular part of amplitudes to all orders in perturbation theory and to next-to-leading-logarithm accuracy in the high-energy limit, resumming the two-Reggeon contribution. Remarkably, we find a closed form for the infrared-singular part, predicting the Regge limit of the soft anomalous dimension to any loop order.

Next-to-leading power threshold logarithms: a status report

There is ample evidence, dating as far back as Low's theorem, that the universality of soft emissions extends beyond leading power in the soft energy. This universality can, in principle, be exploited to generalise the formalism of threshold resummations beyond leading power in the threshold variable. In the past years, several phenomenological approaches have been partially successful in performing such a resummation. Here, we briefly review some recent developments which pave the way to a solution of this problem, at least for electroweak annihilation processes.

Analyzing high-energy factorization beyond next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy

We provide a complete and detailed study of the high-energy limit of four-parton scattering amplitudes in QCD, giving explicit results at two loops and higher orders, and going beyond next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. Building upon recent results, we use the techniques of infrared factorization to investigate the failure of the simplest form of Regge factorization, starting at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy (NNLL) in ln(s/|t|). We provide detailed accounts and explicit expressions for the terms responsible for this breaking in the case of two-loop and three-loop quark and gluon amplitudes in QCD; in particular, we recover and explain a known non-logarithmic double-pole contribution at two-loops, and we compute all non-factorizing single-logarithmic singular contributions at three loops. Conversely, we use high-energy factorization to show that the hard functions of infrared factorization vanish in d = 4 to all orders in the coupling, up to NLL accuracy in ln(s/|t|). This provides clear evidence for the infrared origin of high-energy logarithms. Finally, we extend earlier studies to t-channel exchanges of color representations beyond the octet, which enables us to give predictions based on the dipole formula for single-pole NLL contributions at three and four loops.

The method of regions and next-to-soft corrections in Drell-Yan production

We perform a case study of the behavior of gluon radiation beyond the soft approximation, using as an example the Drell-Yan production cross section at NNLO. We draw a careful distinction between the eikonal expansion, which is in powers of the soft gluon energies, and the expansion in powers of the threshold variable $1 - z$, which involves important hard-collinear effects. Focusing on the contribution to the NNLO Drell-Yan K-factor arising from real-virtual interference, we use the method of regions to classify all relevant contributions up to next-to-leading power in the threshold expansion. With this method, we reproduce the exact two-loop result to the required accuracy, including $z$-independent non-logarithmic contributions, and we precisely identify the origin of the soft-collinear interference which breaks simple soft-gluon factorization at next-to-eikonal level. Our results pave the way for the development of a general factorisation formula for next-to-leading-power threshold logarithms, and clarify the nature of loop corrections to a set of recently proposed next-to-soft theorems.

Approximate NNLO Predictions for the Stop-Pair Production Cross Section at the LHC

If the minimal supersymmetric standard model at scales of around 1 TeV is realized in nature, the total top-squark pair production cross section should be measurable at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In this work we present precise predictions for this observable, which are based upon approximate NNLO formulas obtained using soft-collinear effective theory methods.

Beyond Reggeization for two- and three-loop QCD amplitudes

The high-energy factorization of gauge theory scattering amplitudes in terms of universal impact factors and a Reggeized exchange in the $t$-channel, corresponding to a Regge pole in the angular momentum plane, is know to conflict with the structure of soft anomalous dimensions starting at the two-loop level. We explore the implications of this violation of factorization for two- and three-loop QCD amplitudes: first we propose criteria to organize the amplitudes into factorizing and non-factorizing terms, then we test them by recovering a known result for non-logarithmic terms at two loops. Finally we predict the precise value of the leading non-factorizing energy logarithms at three loops, and we uncover a set of all-order identities constraining infrared finite terms in quark and gluon amplitudes.

High-energy QCD amplitudes at two loops and beyond

Recent progress in our understanding of infrared singularities of multi-parton amplitudes has shown that the simplest form of Regge factorization for high-energy gauge-theory amplitudes fails starting at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We provide a framework to organize the calculation of parton amplitudes at leading power in t/s, in terms of factorizing and non-factorizing contributions. This allows us to give explicit expressions for the leading Reggeization-breaking terms in two-loop and three-loop quark and gluon amplitudes in QCD. In particular, using only infrared information, we recover a known non-factorizing, non-logarithmic double-pole contribution at two-loops, and we compute the leading non-factorizing single-logarithmic contributions at three loops.

NNLL Momentum-Space Resummation for Stop-Pair Production at the LHC

If supersymmetry near the TeV scale is realized in Nature, the pair production of scalar top squarks is expected to be observable at the Large Hadron Collider. Recently, effective field-theory methods were employed to obtain approximate predictions for the cross section for this process, which include soft-gluon emission effects up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbation theory. In this work we employ the same techniques to resum soft-gluon emission effects to all orders in perturbation theory and with next-to-next-to-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We analyze the effects of NNLL resummation on the stop-pair production cross section by obtaining NLO+NNLL predictions in pair invariant mass and one-particle inclusive kinematics. We compare the results of these calculations to the approximate NNLO predictions for the cross sections.

Status of the B -> pi K puzzle and its relation to B_s -> phi pi and B_s -> phi rho decays

Some discrepancies between theory and experiment in the B -> pi K decays suggest the possibility of a new physics contribution with the structure of an electroweak penguin amplitude. If such a scenario is realised in nature, the branching ratios of the decays B_s -> phi pi and B_s -> phi rho can be enhanced by about one order of magnitude. We review and update the current status of the B -> pi K puzzle and its implications for the decays B_s -> phi pi and B_s -> phi rho.

Soft-gluon resummation for slepton-pair production at hadron colliders

We use a recent approach to soft-gluon resummation based on effective field theory to implement soft-gluon resummation at NNNLL order for slepton-pair production in SUSY extensions of the Standard Model. This approach resums large logarithmic corrections arising from the dynamical enhancement of the partonic threshold region caused by steeply falling parton luminosities. We evaluate the resummed invariant-mass distribution and total cross section for slepton-pair production at the Tevatron and LHC, matching our results onto NLO fixed-order calculations. As a byproduct, we also study virtual SUSY effects in the context of soft-gluon resummation for the Drell-Yan process.

Structure of Infrared Singularities of Gauge-Theory Amplitudes at Three and Four Loops

The infrared divergences of massless n-parton scattering amplitudes can be derived from the anomalous dimension of n-jet operators in soft-collinear effective theory. Up to three-loop order, the latter has been shown to have a very simple structure: it contains pairwise color-dipole interactions among the external partons, governed by the cusp anomalous dimension and a logarithm of the kinematic invariants s_{ij}, plus a possible three-loop correlation involving four particles, which is described by a yet unknown function of conformal cross ratios of kinematic invariants. This function is constrained by two-particle collinear limits and by the known behavior of amplitudes in the high-energy limit. We construct a class of relatively simple functions satisfying these constraints. We also extend the analysis to four-loop order, finding that three additional four-particle correlations and a single five-particle correlation appear, which again are governed by functions of conformal cross ratios. Our results suggest that the dipole conjecture, which states that only two-particle color-dipole correlations appear in the anomalous dimension, may need to be generalized. We present a weaker form of the conjecture, stating that to all orders in perturbation theory corrections to the dipole formula are governed by functions of conformal cross ratios, and are O(1/N_c^2) suppressed relative to the dipole term. If true, this conjecture implies that the cusp anomalous dimension obeys Casimir scaling to all orders in perturbation theory.

Analysis of the anomalous-dimension matrix of n-jet operators at 4 loops

Recently, an all-order conjecture for the anomalous-dimension matrix of n-jet operators in SCET was proposed, which allows one to predict the structure of the infrared divergences of dimensionally regularized, massless gauge-theory scattering amplitudes with an arbitrary number of legs and loops. The conjecture is severely constrained by soft-collinear factorization, non-abelian exponentiation, and the behavior of amplitudes in collinear limits. Using these constraints, a diagrammatic analysis has shown that the anomalous dimension involves only two-parton correlators up to three loop order. The only exception is given by a single color structure multiplying a function of conformal cross ratios depending on the momenta of four external partons, which would have to vanish in all two-particle collinear limits. We extend this analysis by completing the diagrammatic analysis at four loop, and we find that additional functions which vanish in all two-particle collinear limits may arise.

B_s -> phi rho^0 and B_s -> phi pi^0 as a handle on isospin-violating New Physics

The 2.5 sigma discrepancy between theory and experiment observed in the difference A_CP(B^- --> pi^0 K^-)-A_CP(Bbar^0 --> pi^+ K^-) can be explained by a new electroweak penguin amplitude. Motivated by this result, we analyse the purely isospin-violating decays B_s --> phi rho^0 and B_s --> phi pi^0, which are dominated by electroweak penguins, and show that in presence of a new electroweak penguin amplitude their branching ratio can be enhanced by up to an order of magnitude, without violating any constraints from other hadronic B decays. This makes them very interesting modes for LHCb and future B factories. We perform both a model-independent analysis and a study within realistic New Physics models such as a modified-Z^0-penguin scenario, a model with an additional Z' boson and the MSSM. In the latter cases the new amplitude can be correlated with other flavour phenomena, such as semileptonic B decays and B_s-Bbar_s mixing, which impose stringent constraints on the enhancement of the two B_s decays. In particular we find that, contrary to claims in the literature, electroweak penguins in the MSSM can reduce the discrepancy in the B --> pi K modes only marginally. As byproducts we update the SM predictions to Br(Bbar_s --> phi pi^0)=1.6^{+1.1}_{-0.3}*10^{-7} and Br(Bbar_s --> phi rho^0)=4.4^{+2.7}_{-0.7}*10^{-7} and perform a state-of-the-art analysis of B --> pi K amplitudes in QCD factorisation.

Probing new physics in electroweak penguins through B_d and B_s decays

An enhanced electroweak penguin amplitude due to the presence of unknown new physics can explain the discrepancies found between theory and experiment in the B -> pi K decays, in particular in A_CP(B^- -> pi^0 K^-) - A_CP(\bar{B}^0 -> pi^+ K^-), but the current precision of the theoretical and experimental results does not allow to draw a firm conclusion. We argue that the \bar{B}_s -> phi rho^0 and \bar{B}_s -> phi pi^0 decays offer an additional tool to investigate this possibility. These purely isospin-violating decays are dominated by electroweak penguins and we show that in presence of a new physics contribution their branching ratio can be enhanced by about an order of magnitude, without violating any constraints from other hadronic B decays. This makes them very interesting modes for LHCb and future B factories. In arXiv:1011.6319 we have performed both a model-independent analysis and a study within realistic New Physics models such as a modified-Z^0-penguin scenario, a model with an additional Z' boson and the MSSM. In this article we summarise the most important results of our study.

Electroweak penguins in isospin-violating B_s decays

The 2.5 sigma discrepancy between theory and experiment observed in the difference Delta ACP = ACP(B- --> pi0 K-) - ACP(Bb0 --> pi+ K-) can be explained by a new electroweak (EW) penguin amplitude. Motivated by this result, we have analyzed the purely isospin-violating decays B_s --> phi pi0 and B_s phi rho0, which are dominated by EW penguins. Our results extend the analysis in arXiv:0910.2809 and have recently been published in arXiv:1011.6319. Here we give a brief overview of the outcome.
