Endpoint factorization and next-to-leading power resummation of gluon thrust

Endpoint divergences in the convolution integrals appearing in next-to-leading-power factorization theorems prevent a straightforward application of standard methods to resum large logarithmic power-suppressed corrections in collider physics. We study the power-suppressed configuration of the thrust distribution in the two-jet region, where a gluon-initiated jet recoils against a quark-antiquark pair. With the aid of operatorial endpoint factorization conditions, we derive a factorization formula where the individual terms are free from endpoint divergences and can be written in terms of renormalized hard, (anti) collinear, and soft functions in four dimensions. This framework enables us to perform the first resummation of the endpoint-divergent SCET$_{\rm I}$ observables at the leading logarithmic accuracy using exclusively renormalization-group methods.

Gravitational soft theorem from emergent soft gauge symmetries

We consider and derive the gravitational soft theorem up to the sub-subleading power from the perspective of effective Lagrangians. The emergent soft gauge symmetries of the effective Lagrangian provide a transparent explanation of why soft graviton emission is universal to sub-subleading power, but gauge boson emission is not. They also suggest a physical interpretation of the form of the soft factors in terms of the charges related to the soft transformations and the kinematics of the multipole expansion. The derivation is done directly at Lagrangian level, resulting in an operatorial form of the soft theorems. In order to highlight the differences and similarities of the gauge-theory and gravitational soft theorems, we include an extensive discussion of soft gauge-boson emission from scalar, fermionic and vector matter at subleading power.

Light-cone distribution amplitudes of heavy mesons with QED effects

We discuss the QED-generalized leading-twist light-cone distribution amplitudes of heavy mesons, that appear in QCD$\times$QED factorization theorems for exclusive two-body $B$ decays. In the presence of electrically charged particles, these functions should be more appropriately regarded as soft functions for heavy-meson decays into two back-to-back particles. In this paper, we derive the one-loop anomalous dimension of these soft functions and study their behaviour under renormalization-scale evolution, obtaining an exact solution in Laplace space. In addition, we provide numerical solutions for the soft functions and analytical solutions to all orders in the strong and to first order in the electromagnetic coupling. For the inverse (and inverse-logarithmic) moments, we obtain an all-order solution in both couplings. We further provide numerical estimates for QED corrections to the inverse moments.

Matching resummed endpoint and continuum $γ$-ray spectra from dark-matter annihilation

For the minimal wino and Higgsino benchmark models we provide accurate energy spectra of high-energy photons from TeV scale dark-matter annihilation $χχ\to γ+X$ by merging electroweak Sudakov resummation near maximal energy with the electroweak parton-shower PPPC4DM, and accounting for the Sommerfeld effect. Electroweak resummation significantly changes the shape of the photon-energy spectrum in the wide range $E_γ\sim (0.6\ldots 1)\, m_χ$ and hence the form of the so-called "line-signal".

Soft-collinear gravity beyond the leading power

We construct "soft-collinear gravity", the effective field theory which describes the interaction of collinear and soft gravitons with matter (and themselves), to all orders in the soft-collinear power expansion. Despite the absence of collinear divergences in gravity at leading power, the construction exhibits remarkable similarities with soft-collinear effective theory of QCD (gauge fields). It reveals an emergent soft background gauge symmetry, which allows for a manifestly gauge-invariant representation of the interactions in terms of a soft covariant derivative, the soft Riemann tensor, and a covariant generalisation of the collinear light-cone gauge metric field. The gauge symmetries control both the unsuppressed collinear field components and the inherent inhomogeneity in $λ$ of the invariant objects to all orders, resulting in a consistent expansion.

Threshold factorization of the Drell-Yan process at next-to-leading power

We present a factorization theorem valid near the kinematic threshold $z=Q^2/\hat{s}\to 1$ of the partonic Drell-Yan process $q\bar q\toγ^*+X$ for general subleading powers in the $(1-z)$ expansion. We then consider the specific case of next-to-leading power. We discuss the emergence of collinear functions, which are a key ingredient to factorization starting at next-to-leading power. We calculate the relevant collinear functions at $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ by employing an operator matching equation and we compare our results to the expansion-by-regions computation up to the next-to-next-to-leading order, finding agreement. Factorization holds only before the dimensional regulator is removed, due to a divergent convolution when the collinear and soft functions are first expanded around $d=4$ before the convolution is performed. This demonstrates an issue for threshold resummation beyond the leading-logarithmic accuracy at next-to-leading power.

Leading-logarithmic threshold resummation of Higgs production in gluon fusion at next-to-leading power

We sum the leading logarithms $α_s^n \ln^{2 n-1}(1-z)$, n=1,2,... near the kinematic threshold $z=m_H^2/\hat{s}\to 1$ at next-to-leading power in the expansion in (1-z) for Higgs production in gluon fusion. We highlight the new contributions compared to Drell-Yan production in quark-antiquark annihilation and show that the final result can be obtained to all orders by the substitution of the colour factor $C_F\to C_A$, confirming previous fixed-order results and conjectures. We also provide a numerical analysis of the next-to-leading power leading logarithms, which indicates that they are numerically relevant.

Finite-temperature modification of heavy particle decay and dark matter annihilation

We apply the operator product expansion (OPE) technique to the decay and annihilation of heavy particles in a thermal medium with temperature below the heavy particle mass, m_chi. This allows us to explain two interesting observations made before: a) that the leading thermal correction to the decay width of a charged particle is the same multiplicative factor of the zero-temperature width for a two-body decay and muon decay, and b) that the leading thermal correction to fermionic dark matter annihilation arises only at order T^4/m_chi^4. The OPE further considerably simplifies the computation and factorizes it into model-independent matrix elements in the thermal background, and short-distance coefficients to be computed in zero-temperature field theory.

NNLL soft and Coulomb resummation for squark and gluino production at the LHC

We present predictions for the total cross sections for pair production of squarks and gluinos at the LHC including a combined NNLL resummation of soft and Coulomb gluon effects. We derive all terms in the NNLO cross section that are enhanced near the production threshold, which include contributions from spin-dependent potentials and so-called annihilation corrections. The NNLL corrections at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV range from up to $20\%$ for squark-squark production to $90\%$ for gluino pair production relative to the NLO results and reduce the theoretical uncertainties of the perturbative calculation to the $10\%$ level. Grid files with our numerical results are publicly available.

NNNLO determination of the bottom-quark mass from non-relativistic sum rules

The mass of the bottom quark can be determined with high precision from moments of the pair-production cross section sigma(e+ e- -> b bbar) near threshold. We present the first complete NNNLO determination from non-relativistic sum rules, obtaining a bottom-quark mass of mb^PS(2 GeV) = (4.532 +0.013 -0.039) GeV in the potential-subtracted scheme. For the mass in the MSbar scheme we find mb^MS(mb^MS) = (4.203 +0.016 -0.034) GeV using the recently computed four-loop correction to the scheme conversion.

Relic density computations at NLO: infrared finiteness and thermal correction

There is an increasing interest in accurate dark matter relic density predictions, which requires next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. The method applied up to now uses zero-temperature NLO calculations of annihilation cross sections in the standard Boltzmann equation for freeze-out, and is conceptually problematic, since it ignores the finite-temperature infrared (IR) divergences from soft and collinear radiation and virtual effects. We address this problem systematically by starting from non-equilibrium quantum field theory, and demonstrate on a realistic model that soft and collinear temperature-dependent divergences cancel in the collision term. Our analysis provides justification for the use of the freeze-out equation in its conventional form and determines the leading finite-temperature correction to the annihilation cross section. This turns out to have a remarkably simple structure.

Threshold singularities, dispersion relations and fixed-order perturbative calculations

We show how to correctly treat threshold singularities in fixed-order perturbative calculations of the electron anomalous magnetic moment and hadronic pair production processes such as top pair production. With respect to the former, we demonstrate the equivalence of the "non-perturbative", resummed treatment of the vacuum polarization contribution, whose spectral function exhibits bound state poles, with the fixed-order calculation by identifying a threshold localized term in the four-loop spectral function. In general, we find that a modification of the dispersion relation by threshold subtractions is required to make fixed-order calculations well-defined and provide the subtraction term. We then solve the apparent problem of a divergent convolution of the partonic cross section with the parton luminosity in the computation of the top pair production cross section starting from the fourth-order correction. We find that when the computation is performed in the usual way as an integral of real and virtual corrections over phase space at a given order in the expansion in the strong coupling, an additional contribution has to be added at N3LO.

Higgs effects in top anti-top production near threshold in e+ e- annihilation

The completion of the third-order QCD corrections to the inclusive top-pair production cross section near threshold demonstrates that the strong dynamics is under control at the few percent level. In this paper we consider the effects of the Higgs boson on the cross section and, for the first time, combine the third-order QCD result with the third-order P-wave, the leading QED and the leading non-resonant contributions. We study the size of the different effects and investigate the sensitivity of the cross section to variations of the top-quark Yukawa coupling due to possible new physics effects.

Next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order QCD prediction for the top anti-top S-wave pair production cross section near threshold in e+ e- annihilation

We present the third-order QCD prediction for the production of top-anti-top quark pairs in electron-positron collisions close to the threshold in the dominant S-wave state. We observe a significant reduction of the theoretical uncertainty and discuss the sensitivity to the top quark mass and width.

Non-QCD contributions to top-pair production near threshold

The threshold scan of top pair production at a future lepton collider allows to determine several Standard Model parameters with very high precision. The recent completion of the third-order QCD corrections to the inclusive top-pair production cross section demonstrated that strong dynamics are under control. We investigate effects from P-wave production and Higgs contributions at third order and from QED and the nonresonant production of the physical $W^+W^-b\bar{b}$ final state at first order. We discuss the sensitivity of the cross section to the top mass, width and Yukawa coupling as well as to the strong coupling.

Non-relativistic high-energy physics: top production and dark matter annihilation

Non-relativistic physics is often associated with atomic physics and low-energy phenomena of the strong interactions between nuclei and quarks. In this review we cover three topics in contemporary high-energy physics at or close to the TeV scale, where non-relativistic dynamics plays an important if not defining role. We first discuss in detail the third-order corrections to top-quark pair production in electron-positron collisions in the threshold region, which plays a major role at a future high-energy e+ e- collider. Threshold effects are also relevant in the production of heavy particles in hadronic collisions, where in addition to the Coulomb force soft gluon radiation contributes to enhanced quantum corrections. We review the joint resummation of non-relativistic and soft gluon effects for pair production of top quarks and supersymmetric particles to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The third topic deals with pair annihilation of dark matter particles within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Here the electroweak Yukawa force generated by the exchange of gauge and Higgs bosons can cause large "Sommerfeld" enhancements of the annihilation cross section in some parameter regions.

Two-loop current-current operator contribution to the non-leptonic QCD penguin amplitude

The computation of direct CP asymmetries in charmless B decays at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD is of interest to ascertain the short-distance contribution. Here we compute the two-loop penguin contractions of the current-current operators Q_{1,2} and provide a first estimate of NNLO CP asymmetries in penguin-dominated b -> s transitions.

Anomalous Higgs couplings in angular asymmetries of H --> Zl+l- and e+e- --> HZ

We study in detail the impact of anomalous Higgs couplings in angular asymmetries of the crossing-symmetric processes H --> Zl+l- and e+e- --> HZ. Beyond Standard Model physics is parametrized in terms of the SU(3)xSU(2)_LxU(1)_Y dimension-six effective Lagrangian. In the light of present bounds on d = 6 interactions we study how angular asymmetries can reveal non-standard CP-even and CP-odd couplings. We provide approximate expressions to all observables of interest making transparent their dominant dependence on anomalous couplings. We show that some asymmetries may reveal BSM effects that are hidden in other observables. In particular, CP-even and CP-odd d = 6 HZgamma couplings as well as (to a lesser extent) HZll contact interactions can generate asymmetries at the several percent level, while having small or no effects on the di-lepton invariant mass spectrum of H --> Zl+l-. Finally, the higher di-lepton invariant mass probed in e+e- --> HZ leads to interesting differences in the asymmetries with respect to those of H --> Zl+l- that may lead to complementary anomalous coupling searches at the LHC and e+e- colliders.

Signatures of anomalous Higgs couplings in angular asymmetries of H --> Zl+l- and e+e- --> HZ

Parametrizing beyond Standard Model physics by the SU(3) x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y dimension-six effective Lagrangian, we study the impact of anomalous Higgs couplings in angular asymmetries of the crossing-symmetric processes H --> Zl+l- and e+e- --> HZ. In the light of present bounds on d=6 couplings, we show that some asymmetries can reveal BSM effects that would otherwise be hidden in other observables. The d=6 HZgamma couplings as well as (to a lesser extent) HZll contact interactions can generate asymmetries at the several percent level, albeit having less significant effects on the di-lepton invariant mass spectrum of the decay H --> Zl+l-. The higher di-lepton invariant mass probed in e+e- --> HZ can lead to complementary anomalous coupling searches at e+e- colliders.

The intrinsic B-mode polarisation of the Cosmic Microwave Background

We estimate the B-polarisation induced in the Cosmic Microwave Background by the non-linear evolution of density perturbations. Using the second-order Boltzmann code SONG, our analysis incorporates, for the first time, all physical effects at recombination. We also include novel contributions from the redshift part of the Boltzmann equation and from the bolometric definition of the temperature in the presence of polarisation. The remaining line-of-sight terms (lensing and time-delay) have previously been studied and must be calculated non-perturbatively. The intrinsic B-mode polarisation is present independent of the initial conditions and might contaminate the signal from primordial gravitational waves. We find this contamination to be comparable to a primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio of $r\simeq10^{-7}$ at the angular scale $\ell\simeq100\,$, where the primordial signal peaks, and $r\simeq 5 \cdot 10^{-5}$ at $\ell\simeq700\,$, where the intrinsic signal peaks. Therefore, we conclude that the intrinsic B-polarisation from second-order effects is not likely to contaminate future searches of primordial gravitational waves.

Perturbative expansion of tau hadronic spectral function moments and alpha_s extractions

Various moments of the hadronic spectral functions have been employed in the determination of the strong coupling alpha_s from tau decays. In this work we study the behaviour of their perturbative series under different assumptions for the large-order behaviour of the Adler function, extending previous work on the tau hadronic width. We find that the moments can be divided into a small number of classes, whose characteristics depend only on generic features of the moment weight function and Adler function series. Some moments that are commonly employed in alpha_s analyses from tau decays should be avoided because of their perturbative instability. This conclusion is corroborated by a simplified alpha_s extraction from individual moments. Furthermore, under reasonable assumptions for the higher-order behaviour of the perturbative series, fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT) provides the preferred framework for the renormalization group improvement of all moments that show good perturbative behaviour. Finally, we provide further evidence for the plausibility of the description of the Adler function in terms of a small number of leading renormalon singularities.

Soft-collinear gravity

We study collinear and soft singularities in perturbative quantum gravity by constructing an effective field theory similar to soft-collinear effective theory for QCD (SCET). We find that the soft sector exhibits factorization properties similar to those of SCET. The collinear sector is, however, quite different. While the leading-power collinear effective Lagrangian is trivial, the presence of the metric field $h_{++}$ with negative scaling dimension allows for collinear divergences in loop diagrams with couplings to non-collinear sources. We provide a compact proof of the well-known fact that there are no collinear singularities in perturbative quantum gravity by demonstrating the decoupling of $h_{++}$ from the sources. We briefly discuss the connection of our approach to recent work by Akhoury et al. (Phys. Rev. D84 (2011) 104040) as well as to the Weinberg's original paper (Phys. Rev. 140 (1965) B516), where the cancellation of the collinear singularities was demonstrated for the first time in the eikonal approximation.

Finite Number Density Corrections to Leptogenesis

We derive and solve kinetic equations for leptogenesis within the Closed Time Path (CTP) formalism. It is particularly emphasised how the procedure of real intermediate state subtraction familiar from the Boltzmann approach is realised within the CTP framework; and we show how in time-independent situations, no lepton asymmetry emerges, in accordance with the CPT-theorem. The CTP approach provides new quantum statistical corrections from evaluating the loop integrals. These lead to an enhancement of the asymmetry that is originating from the Bose statistics of the Higgs particles. To quantify this effect, we define and evaluate an effective CP-violating parameter. We also solve the kinetic equations and show explicitly that the new quantum statistical corrections can be neglected in the strong washout regime, while, depending on initial conditions, they can be very sizable for weak washout.

preprint2010arXiv

Flavoured Leptogenesis in the CTP Formalism

Within the Closed Time Path (CTP) framework, we derive kinetic equations for particle distribution functions that describe leptogenesis in the presence of several lepton flavours. These flavours have different Standard-Model Yukawa couplings, which induce flavour-sensitive scattering processes and thermal dispersion relations. Kinetic equilibrium, which is rapidly established and maintained via gauge interactions, allows to simplify these equations to kinetic equations for the matrix of lepton charge densities. In performing this simplification, we notice that the rapid flavour-blind gauge interactions damp the flavour oscillations of the leptons. Leptogenesis turns out to be in the parametric regime where the flavour oscillations are overdamped and flavour decoherence is mainly induced by flavour sensitive scatterings. We solve the kinetic equations for the lepton number densities numerically and show that they interpolate between the unflavoured and the fully flavoured regimes within the intermediate parametric region, where neither of these limits is applicable.

Threshold resummation for pair production of coloured heavy (s)particles at hadron colliders

We derive a factorization formula for the production of pairs of heavy coloured particles in hadronic collisions near the production threshold that establishes factorization of soft and Coulomb effects. This forms the basis for a combined resummation of Coulomb and soft corrections, including the non-trivial interference of the two effects. We develop a resummation formalism valid at NNLL accuracy using the momentum-space approach to soft gluon resummation. We present numerical results for the NLL resummed squark-antisquark production cross section at the LHC and Tevatron, including also the contribution of squark-antisquark bound states below threshold. The total correction on top of the next-to-leading order approximation is found to be sizeable, and amounts to (4-20)% in the squark mass region 200 GeV-3 TeV at the 14 TeV LHC. The scale dependence of the total cross section is also reduced.

Colour structure in threshold resummation and squark-antisquark production at NLL

We consider the resummation of soft and Coulomb gluons for pair-production processes of heavy coloured particles at hadron colliders, and discuss recent results on the construction of a basis in colour space that diagonalizes the soft function to all orders in perturbation theory and the determination of the two-loop soft anomalous dimension needed for NNLL resummations. We present results for the combined NLL resummation of soft gluon and Coulomb-gluon effects for squark-antisquark production at the LHC.

QCD factorization for B->PP and B->PV decays

A comprehensive study of exclusive hadronic B-meson decays into final states containing two pseudoscalar mesons (PP) or a pseudoscalar and a vector meson (PV) is presented. The decay amplitudes are calculated at leading power in Lambda_{QCD}/m_b and at next-to-leading order in alpha_s using the QCD factorization approach. The calculation of the relevant hard-scattering kernels is completed. Important classes of power corrections, including ``chirally-enhanced'' terms and weak annihilation contributions, are estimated and included in the phenomenological analysis. Predictions are presented for the branching ratios of the complete set of the 96 decays of B^-, B^0, and B_s mesons into PP and PV final states, and for most of the corresponding CP asymmetries. Several decays and observables of particular phenomenological interest are discussed in detail, including the magnitudes of the penguin amplitudes in PP and PV final states, an analysis of the pi-rho system, and the time-dependent CP asymmetry in the K phi and K eta' final states.

Flavor-Singlet B-Decay Amplitudes in QCD Factorization

Exclusive hadronic B-meson decays into two-body final states consisting of a light pseudoscalar or vector meson along with an eta or eta' meson are of great phenomenological interest. Their theoretical analysis involves decay mechanisms that are unique to flavor-singlet states, such as their coupling to gluons or their ``intrinsic charm'' content. These issues are studied systematically in the context of QCD factorization and the heavy-quark expansion. Theory can account for the experimental data on the B->K^{(*)} eta^{(')} branching fractions, albeit within large uncertainties.

Mixing-induced CP Asymmetries in Inclusive $B$ Decays

We consider CP violating asymmetries that are induced by particle-antiparticle mixing in inclusive channels of neutral $B$ meson decay. Not only are the branching ratios sizable, at the 1% to 50% level, but some of those asymmetries are expected to be large because of substantial CKM phases. The inclusive sum partially dilutes the asymmetries, but the dilution factor is calculable, assuming local quark-hadron duality, and CKM parameters can be reliably extracted. We discuss in detail the determination of $sin 2α$ from charmless final states in decays of $B_d$ mesons and survey the asymmetries for other inclusive final states. While probably not yet sensitive to standard model predictions, meaningful CP violation studies can be conducted with existing data samples of inclusive neutral $B$ decays.
