An abstract approach to the Crouzeix conjecture

Let $A$ be a uniform algebra, $θ:A\to M_n(\mathbb{C})$ be a continuous homomorphism and $α:A\to A$ be an antilinear contraction such that \[ \|θ(f)+θ(α(f))^*\|\le 2\|f\| \quad(f\in A). \] We show that $\|θ\|\le 1+\sqrt{2}$, and that $1+\sqrt2$ is sharp. We conjecture that, if further $α(1)=1$, then we may conclude that $\|θ\|\le2$. This would yield a positive solution to the Crouzeix conjecture on numerical ranges. In support of our conjecture, we prove that it is true in two special cases. We also discuss a completely bounded version of our conjecture that brings into play ideas from dilation theory.

Minimal boundaries for operator algebras

We study boundaries for unital operator algebras. These are sets of irreducible $*$-representations that completely capture the spatial norm attainment for a given subalgebra. Classically, the Choquet boundary is the minimal boundary of a function algebra and it coincides with the collection of peak points. We investigate the question of minimality for the non-commutative counterpart of the Choquet boundary and show that minimality is equivalent to what we call the Bishop property. Not every operator algebra has the Bishop property, but we exhibit classes of examples that do. Throughout our analysis, we exploit various non-commutative notions of peak points for an operator algebra. When specialized to the setting of $C^*$-algebras, our techniques allow us to provide a new proof of a recent characterization of those $C^*$-algebras admitting only finite-dimensional irreducible representations.

Multipliers and operator space structure of weak product spaces

In the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, weak product spaces generalize the notion of the Hardy space $H^1$. For complete Nevanlinna-Pick spaces $\mathcal H$, we characterize all multipliers of the weak product space $\mathcal H \odot \mathcal H$. In particular, we show that if $\mathcal H$ has the so-called column-row property, then the multipliers of $\mathcal H$ and of $\mathcal H \odot \mathcal H$ coincide. This result applies in particular to the classical Dirichlet space and to the Drury-Arveson space on a finite dimensional ball. As a key device, we exhibit a natural operator space structure on $\mathcal H \odot \mathcal H$, which enables the use of dilations of completely bounded maps.

Multiplier algebras of complete Nevanlinna-Pick spaces: dilations, boundary representations and hyperrigidity

We study reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on the unit ball with the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property through the representation theory of their algebras of multipliers. We give a complete description of the representations in terms of the reproducing kernels. While representations always dilate to $*$-representations of the ambient $C^*$-algebra, we show that in our setting we automatically obtain coextensions. In fact, we show that in many cases, this phenomenon characterizes the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property. We also deduce operator theoretic dilation results which are in the spirit of work of Agler and several other authors. Moreover, we identify all boundary representations, compute the $C^*$-envelopes and determine hyperrigidity for certain analogues of the disc algebra. Finally, we extend these results to spaces of functions on homogeneous subvarieties of the ball.

Absolute continuity for commuting row contractions

Absolutely continuous commuting row contractions admit a weak-$*$ continuous functional calculus. Building on recent work describing the first and second dual spaces of the closure of the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space, we give a complete characterization of these commuting row contractions in measure theoretic terms. We also establish that completely non-unitary row contractions are necessarily absolutely continuous, in direct parallel with the case of a single contraction. Finally, we consider refinements of this question for row contractions that are annihilated by a given ideal.

Compact ideals and rigidity of representations for amenable operator algebras

We examine rigidity phenomena for representations of amenable operator algebras which have an ideal of compact operators. We establish that a generalized version of Kadison's conjecture on completely bounded homomorphisms holds for the algebra if the associated quotient is abelian. We also prove that injective completely bounded representations of the algebra are similar to complete isometries. The main motivating example for these investigations is the recent construction of Choi, Farah and Ozawa of an amenable operator algebra that is not similar to a $C^*$-algebra, and we show how it fits into our framework. All of our results hold in the presence of the total reduction property, a property weaker than amenability.

Duality, convexity and peak interpolation in the Drury-Arveson space

We consider the closed algebra $\mathcal{A}_d$ generated by the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space. We identify $\mathcal{A}_d^*$ as a direct sum of the preduals of the full multiplier algebra and of a commutative von Neumann algebra, and establish analogues of many classical results concerning the dual space of the ball algebra. These developments are deeply intertwined with the problem of peak interpolation for multipliers, and we generalize a theorem of Bishop-Carleson-Rudin to this setting by means of Choquet type integral representations. As a byproduct we shed some light on the nature of the extreme points of the unit ball of $\mathcal{A}^*_d$.

Ideals in a multiplier algebra on the ball

We study the ideals of the closure of the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space. Structural results are obtained by investigating the relation between an ideal and its weak-$*$ closure, much in the spirit of the corresponding classical facts for the disc algebra. Zero sets for multipliers are also considered and are deeply intertwined with the structure of ideals. Our approach is primarily based on duality arguments.

Completely bounded isomorphisms of operator algebras and similarity to complete isometries

A well-known theorem of Paulsen says that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital operator algebra and $ϕ:\mathcal{A}\to B(\mathcal{H})$ is a unital completely bounded homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is similar to a completely contractive map $ϕ'$. Motivated by classification problems for Hilbert space contractions, we are interested in making the inverse $ϕ'^{-1}$ completely contractive as well whenever the map $ϕ$ has a completely bounded inverse. We show that there exist invertible operators $X$ and $Y$ such that the map $$ XaX^{-1}\mapsto Yϕ(a)Y^{-1} $$ is completely contractive and is "almost" isometric on any given finite set of elements from $\mathcal{A}$ with non-zero spectrum. Although the map cannot be taken to be completely isometric in general, we show that this can be achieved if $\mathcal{A}$ is completely boundedly isomorphic to either a $C^*$-algebra or a uniform algebra. In the case of quotient algebras of $H^\infty$, we translate these conditions in function theoretic terms and relate them to the classical Carleson condition.

On the unilateral shift as a Hilbert module over the disc algebra

We study the unilateral shift (of arbitrary countable multiplicity) as a Hilbert module over the disc algebra and the associated extension groups. In relation with the problem of determining whether this module is projective, we consider a special class of extensions, which we call "polynomial". We show that the subgroup of polynomial extensions of a contractive module by the adjoint of the unilateral shift is trivial. The main tool is a function theoretic decomposition of the Sz.-Nagy--Foias model space for completely non-unitary contractions.

Quasiaffine orbits of invariant subspaces for uniform Jordan operators

We consider the problem of classification of invariant subspaces for the class of uniform Jordan operators. We show that given two invariant subspaces $M_1$ and $M_2$ of a uniform Jordan operator $T=S(θ)\oplus S(θ)\oplus \ldots$, the subspace $M_2$ belongs to the quasiaffine orbit of $M_1$ if and only if the restrictions $T|M_1$ and $T|M_2$ are quasisimilar and the compression $T_{M_2^\perp}$ can be injected in the compression $T_{M_1^\perp}$. Our result refines previous work on the subject by Bercovici and Smotzer.

Similarity results for operators of class $C_0$ and the algebra $H^\infty(T)$

Given two multiplicity-free operators $T_1$ and $T_2$ of class $C_0$ having the same finite Blaschke product as minimal function, the operator algebras $H^\infty(T_1)$ and $H^\infty(T_2)$ are isomorphic and $T_1$ is similar to $T_2$. We find conditions under which the norm of the similarity between the operators can be controlled by the norm of the algebra isomorphism. As an application, we improve upon earlier work and obtain results regarding similarity when the minimal function is an infinite product of finite Blaschke products satisfying the generalized Carleson condition.

Unitary equivalence and similarity to Jordan models for weak contractions of class $C_0$

We obtain results on the unitary equivalence of weak contractions of class $C_0$ to their Jordan models under an assumption on their commutants. In particular, our work addresses the case of arbitrary finite multiplicity. The main tool is the theory of boundary representations due to Arveson. We also generalize and improve previously known results concerning unitary equivalence and similarity to Jordan models when the minimal function is a Blaschke product.

Similarity results for operators of class C_0

If T is a multiplicity-free contraction of class C_0 with minimal function m_T, then it is quasisimilar to the Jordan block S(m_T). In case m_T is a Blaschke product with simple roots forming a Carleson sequence, we show that the relation between T and S(m_T) can be strengthened to similarity. Under the additional assumption that u(T) has closed range for every inner divisor u of m_T, the result also holds in the more general setting where the roots have bounded multiplicities.
