A note on ΓΓ-convergence of Tikhonov functionals for nonlinear inverse problems

We consider variational regularization of nonlinear inverse problems in Banach spaces using Tikhonov functionals. This article addresses the problem of ΓΓ-convergence of a family of Tikhonov functionals and assertions of the convergence of their respective infima. Such questions arise, if model uncertainties, inaccurate forward operators, finite dimensional approximations of the forward solutions and / or data, etc. make the evaluation of the original functional impossible and, thus, its minimizer not computable. But for applications it is of utmost importance that the minimizer of the replacement functional approximates the original minimizer. Under certain additional conditions this is satisfied if the approximated functionals converge to the original functional in the sense of ΓΓ-convergence. We deduce simple criteria in different topologies which guarantee ΓΓ-convergence as well as convergence of minimizing sequences.

An invitation to the Drury-Arveson space

This is an extended version of a three part mini course on the Drury-Arveson space given as part of the Focus Program on Analytic Function Spaces and their Applications, hosted by the Fields Institute and held remotely. The Drury-Arveson space, also known as symmetric Fock space, is a natural generalization of the classical Hardy space on the unit disc to the unit ball in higher dimensions. It plays a universal role both in operator theory and in function theory. These notes give an introduction to the Drury-Arveson space. They are not intended to give a comprehensive overview of the entire subject, but rather aim to explain some of the contexts in which the Drury-Arveson space makes an appearance and to showcase the different approaches to this space.

Free outer functions in complete Pick spaces

Jury and Martin establish an analogue of the classical inner-outer factorization of Hardy space functions. They show that every function ff in a Hilbert function space with a normalized complete Pick reproducing kernel has a factorization of the type f=φgf=φg, where gg is cyclic, φφ is a contractive multiplier, and ∥f∥=∥g∥\|f\|=\|g\|. In this paper we show that if the cyclic factor is assumed to be what we call free outer, then the factors are essentially unique, and we give a characterization of the factors that is intrinsic to the space. That lets us compute examples. We also provide several applications of this factorization.

Interpolation and duality in algebras of multipliers on the ball

We study the multiplier algebras A(H)A(\mathcal{H}) obtained as the closure of the polynomials on certain reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces H\mathcal{H} on the ball Bd\mathbb{B}_d of Cd\mathbb{C}^d. Our results apply, in particular, to the Drury-Arveson space, the Dirichlet space and the Hardy space on the ball. We first obtain a complete description of the dual and second dual spaces of A(H)A(\mathcal H) in terms of the complementary bands of Henkin and totally singular measures for Mult⁡(H)\operatorname{Mult}(\mathcal{H}). This is applied to obtain several definitive results in interpolation. In particular, we establish a sharp peak interpolation result for compact Mult⁡(H)\operatorname{Mult}(\mathcal{H})-totally null sets as well as a Pick and peak interpolation theorem. Conversely, we show that a mere interpolation set is Mult⁡(H)\operatorname{Mult}(\mathcal{H})-totally null.

Multiplier tests and subhomogeneity of multiplier algebras

Multipliers of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces can be characterized in terms of positivity of n×nn \times n matrices analogous to the classical Pick matrix. We study for which reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces it suffices to consider matrices of bounded size nn. We connect this problem to the notion of subhomogeneity of non-selfadjoint operator algebras. Our main results show that multiplier algebras of many Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, such as the Dirichlet space and the Drury-Arveson space, are not subhomogeneous, and hence one has to test Pick matrices of arbitrarily large matrix size nn. To treat the Drury-Arveson space, we show that multiplier algebras of certain weighted Dirichlet spaces on the disc embed completely isometrically into the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space.

Multipliers and operator space structure of weak product spaces

In the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, weak product spaces generalize the notion of the Hardy space H1H^1. For complete Nevanlinna-Pick spaces H\mathcal H, we characterize all multipliers of the weak product space H⊙H\mathcal H \odot \mathcal H. In particular, we show that if H\mathcal H has the so-called column-row property, then the multipliers of H\mathcal H and of H⊙H\mathcal H \odot \mathcal H coincide. This result applies in particular to the classical Dirichlet space and to the Drury-Arveson space on a finite dimensional ball. As a key device, we exhibit a natural operator space structure on H⊙H\mathcal H \odot \mathcal H, which enables the use of dilations of completely bounded maps.

Dilation theory in finite dimensions and matrix convexity

We establish a finite-dimensional version of the Arveson-Stinespring dilation theorem for unital completely positive maps on operator systems. This result can be seen as a general principle to deduce finite-dimensional dilation theorems from their classical infinite-dimensional counterparts. In addition to providing unified proofs of known finite-dimensional dilation theorems, we establish finite-dimensional versions of Agler's theorem on rational dilation on an annulus, of Berger's dilation theorem for operators of numerical radius at most 11, and of the Putinar-Sandberg numerical range dilation theorem. As a key tool, we prove versions of Carathéodory's and of Minkowski's theorem for matrix convex sets.

Every complete Pick space satisfies the column-row property

In the theory of complete Pick spaces, the column-row property has appeared in a variety of contexts. We show that it is satisfied by every complete Pick space in the following strong form: each sequence of multipliers that induces a contractive column multiplication operator also induces a contractive row multiplication operator. In combination with known results, this yields a number of consequences. Firstly, we obtain multiple applications to the theory of weak product spaces, including factorization, multipliers and invariant subspaces. Secondly, there is a short proof of the characterization of interpolating sequences in terms of separation and Carleson measure conditions, independent of the solution of the Kadison-Singer problem. Thirdly, we find that in the theory of de Branges-Rovnyak spaces on the ball, the column-extreme multipliers of Jury and Martin are precisely the extreme points of the unit ball of the multiplier algebra.

Interpolating sequences in spaces with the complete Pick property

We characterize interpolating sequences for multiplier algebras of spaces with the complete Pick property. Specifically, we show that a sequence is interpolating if and only if it is separated and generates a Carleson measure. This generalizes results of Carleson for the Hardy space and of Bishop, Marshall and Sundberg for the Dirichlet space. Furthermore, we investigate interpolating sequences for pairs of Hilbert function spaces.

Weak products of complete Pick spaces

Let H\mathcal H be the Drury-Arveson or Dirichlet space of the unit ball of Cd\mathbb C^d. The weak product H⊙H\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H of H\mathcal H is the collection of all functions hh that can be written as h=∑n=1∞fngnh=\sum_{n=1}^\infty f_n g_n, where ∑n=1∞∥fn∥∥gn∥<∞\sum_{n=1}^\infty \|f_n\|\|g_n\|<\infty. We show that H⊙H\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H is contained in the Smirnov class of H\mathcal H, i.e. every function in H⊙H\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H is a quotient of two multipliers of H\mathcal H, where the function in the denominator can be chosen to be cyclic in H\mathcal H. As a consequence we show that the map N→closH⊙HN\mathcal N \to clos_{\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H} \mathcal N establishes a 1-1 and onto correspondence between the multiplier invariant subspaces of H\mathcal H and of H⊙H\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H. The results hold for many weighted Besov spaces H\mathcal H in the unit ball of Cd\mathbb C^d provided the reproducing kernel has the complete Pick property. One of our main technical lemmas states that for weighted Besov spaces H\mathcal H that satisfy what we call the multiplier inclusion condition any bounded column multiplication operator H→⊕n=1∞H\mathcal H \to \oplus_{n=1}^\infty \mathcal H induces a bounded row multiplication operator ⊕n=1∞H→H\oplus_{n=1}^\infty \mathcal H \to \mathcal H. For the Drury-Arveson space Hd2H^2_d this leads to an alternate proof of the characterization of interpolating sequences in terms of weak separation and Carleson measure conditions.

A multiplier algebra functional calculus

This paper generalizes the classical Sz.-Nagy--Foias H∞(D)H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D}) functional calculus for Hilbert space contractions. In particular, we replace the single contraction TT with a tuple T=(T1,…,Td)T=(T_1, \dots, T_d) of commuting bounded operators on a Hilbert space and replace H∞(D)H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D}) with a large class of multiplier algebras of Hilbert function spaces on the unit ball in Cd\mathbb C^d.

Ideal membership in H∞H^\infty: Toeplitz corona approach

We study the ideal membership problem in H∞H^\infty on the unit disc. Thus, given functions f,f1,…,fnf,f_1,\ldots,f_n in H∞H^\infty, we seek sufficient conditions on the size of ff in order for ff to belong to the ideal of H∞H^\infty generated by f1,…,fnf_1,\ldots,f_n. We provide a different proof of a theorem of Treil, which gives the sharpest known sufficient condition. To this end, we solve a closely related problem in the Hilbert space H2H^2, which is equivalent to the ideal membership problem by the Nevanlinna-Pick property of H2H^2.

Radially weighted Besov spaces and the Pick property

For s∈Rs\in \mathbb R the weighted Besov space on the unit ball Bd\mathbb B_d of Cd\mathbb C^d is defined by Bωs={f∈Hol⁡(Bd):∫Bd∣Rsf∣2ωdV<∞}.B^s_ω=\{f\in \operatorname{Hol}(\mathbb B_d): \int_{\mathbb B_d}|R^sf|^2 ωdV<\infty\}. Here RsR^s is a power of the radial derivative operator R=∑i=1dzi∂∂ziR= \sum_{i=1}^d z_i\frac{\partial}{\partial z_i}, VV denotes Lebesgue measure, and ωω is a radial weight function not supported on any ball of radius <1< 1. Our results imply that for all such weights ωω and νν, every bounded column multiplication operator Bωs→Bνt⊗ℓ2B^s_ω\to B^t_ν\otimes \ell^2 induces a bounded row multiplier Bωs⊗ℓ2→BνtB^s_ω\otimes \ell^2 \to B^t_ν. Furthermore we show that if a weight ωω satisfies that for some α>−1α>-1 the ratio ω(z)/(1−∣z∣2)αω(z)/(1-|z|^2)^α is nondecreasing for t0<∣z∣<1t_0<|z|<1, then BωsB^s_ω is a complete Pick space, whenever s≥(α+d)/2s\ge (α+d)/2.

Boundary representations of operator spaces, and compact rectangular matrix convex sets

We initiate the study of matrix convexity for operator spaces. We define the notion of compact rectangular matrix convex set, and prove the natural analogs of the Krein-Milman and the bipolar theorems in this context. We deduce a canonical correspondence between compact rectangular matrix convex sets and operator spaces. We also introduce the notion of boundary representation for an operator space, and prove the natural analog of Arveson's conjecture: every operator space is completely normed by its boundary representations. This yields a canonical construction of the triple envelope of an operator space.

Multiplier algebras of complete Nevanlinna-Pick spaces: dilations, boundary representations and hyperrigidity

We study reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces on the unit ball with the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property through the representation theory of their algebras of multipliers. We give a complete description of the representations in terms of the reproducing kernels. While representations always dilate to ∗*-representations of the ambient C∗C^*-algebra, we show that in our setting we automatically obtain coextensions. In fact, we show that in many cases, this phenomenon characterizes the complete Nevanlinna-Pick property. We also deduce operator theoretic dilation results which are in the spirit of work of Agler and several other authors. Moreover, we identify all boundary representations, compute the C∗C^*-envelopes and determine hyperrigidity for certain analogues of the disc algebra. Finally, we extend these results to spaces of functions on homogeneous subvarieties of the ball.

The classification problem for operator algebraic varieties and their multiplier algebras

We study from the perspective of Borel complexity theory the classification problem for multiplier algebras associated with operator algebraic varieties. These algebras are precisely the multiplier algebras of irreducible complete Nevanlinna-Pick spaces. We prove that these algebras are not classifiable up to algebraic isomorphism using countable structures as invariants. In order to prove such a result, we develop the theory of turbulence for Polish groupoids, which generalizes Hjorth's turbulence theory for Polish group actions. We also prove that the classification problem for multiplier algebras associated with varieties in a finite dimensional ball up to isometric isomorphism has maximum complexity among the essentially countable classification problems. In particular, this shows that Blaschke sequences are not smoothly classifiable up to conformal equivalence via automorphisms of the disc.

The Smirnov class for spaces with the complete Pick property

We show that every function in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space with a normalized complete Pick kernel is the quotient of a multiplier and a cyclic multiplier. This extends a theorem of Alpay, Bolotnikov and Kaptanoğlu. We explore various consequences of this result regarding zero sets, spaces on compact sets and Gleason parts. In particular, using a construction of Salas, we exhibit a rotationally invariant complete Pick space of analytic functions on the unit disc for which the corona theorem fails.

Multipliers of embedded discs

We consider a number of examples of multiplier algebras on Hilbert spaces associated to discs embedded into a complex ball in order to examine the isomorphism problem for multiplier algebras on complete Nevanlinna-Pick reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. In particular, we exhibit uncountably many discs in the ball of ℓ2\ell^2 which are multiplier biholomorphic but have non-isomorphic multiplier algebras. We also show that there are closed discs in the ball of ℓ2\ell^2 which are varieties, and examine their multiplier algebras. In finite balls, we provide a counterpoint to a result of Alpay, Putinar and Vinnikov by providing a proper rational biholomorphism of the disc onto a variety VV in B2\mathbb B_2 such that the multiplier algebra is not all of H∞(V)H^\infty(V). We also show that the transversality property, which is one of their hypotheses, is a consequence of the smoothness that they require.

Topological isomorphisms for some universal operator algebras

Let I⊂C[z1,...,zd]I \subset \mathbb C[z_1,...,z_d] be a radical homogeneous ideal, and let AI\mathcal A_I be the norm-closed non-selfadjoint algebra generated by the compressions of the dd-shift on Drury-Arveson space Hd2H^2_d to the co-invariant subspace Hd2⊖IH^2_d \ominus I. Then AI\mathcal A_I is the universal operator algebra for commuting row contractions subject to the relations in II. We ask under which conditions are there topological isomorphisms between two such algebras AI\mathcal A_I and AJ\mathcal A_J? We provide a positive answer to a conjecture of Davidson, Ramsey and Shalit: AI\mathcal A_I and AJ\mathcal A_J are topologically isomorphic if and only if there is an invertible linear map AA on Cd\mathbb C^d which maps the vanishing locus of JJ isometrically onto the vanishing locus of II. Most of the proof is devoted to showing that finite algebraic sums of full Fock spaces over subspaces of Cd\mathbb C^d are closed. This allows us to show that the map AA induces a completely bounded isomorphism between AI\mathcal A_I and AJ\mathcal A_J.
