Effective negative specific heat by destabilization of metastable states in dipolar systems

We study dipolarly coupled three dimensional spin systems in both the microcanonical and the canonical ensembles by introducing appropriate numerical methods to determine the microcanonical temperature and by realizing a canonical model of heat bath. In the microcanonical ensemble, we show the existence of a branch of stable antiferromagnetic states in the low energy region. Other metastable ferromagnetic states exist in this region: by externally perturbing them, an effective negative specific heat is obtained. In the canonical ensemble, for low temperatures, the same metastable states are unstable and reach a new branch of more robust metastable states which is distinct from the stable one. Our statistical physics approach allows us to put some order in the complex structure of stable and metastable states of dipolar systems.

Landau-Zener Bloch oscillations with perturbed flat bands

Sinusoidal Bloch oscillations appear in band structures exposed to external fields. Landau-Zener (LZ) tunneling between different bands is usually a counteracting effect limiting Bloch oscillations. Here we consider a flat band network with two dispersive and one flat bands, e.g. for ultracold atoms and optical waveguide networks. Using external synthetic gauge and gravitational fields we obtain a perturbed yet gapless band structure with almost flat parts. The resulting Bloch oscillations consist of two parts - a fast scan through the nonflat part of the dispersion structure, and an almost complete halt for substantial time when the atomic wave packet is trapped in the original flat band part of the unperturbed spectrum, made possible due to LZ tunneling.

All-phononic Digital Transistor on the Basis of Gap-Soliton Dynamics in Anharmonic Oscillator Ladder

A conceptual mechanism of amplification of phonons by phonons on the basis of nonlinear band-gap transmission (supratransmission) phenomenon is presented. As an example a system of weakly coupled chains of anharmonic oscillators is considered. One (source) chain is driven harmonically by boundary with a frequency located in the upper band close to the band edge of the ladder system. Amplification happens when a second (gate) chain is driven by a small signal in the counter phase and with the same frequency as first chain. If the total driving of both chains overcomes the band-gap transmission threshold the large amplitude band-gap soliton emerges and amplification scenario is realized. The mechanism is interpreted as nonlinear superposition of evanescent and propagating nonlinear modes manifesting in a single or double soliton generation working in band-gap or band-pass regimes, respectively. The results could be straightforwardly generalized for all-optical or all-magnonic contexts and has all the promises for logic gate operations.

Instabilities and relaxation to equilibrium in long-range oscillator chains

We study instabilities and relaxation to equilibrium in a long-range extension of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPU) oscillator chain by exciting initially the lowest Fourier mode. Localization in mode space is stronger for the long-range FPU model. This allows us to uncover the sporadic nature of instabilities, i.e., by varying initially the excitation amplitude of the lowest mode, which is the control parameter, instabilities occur in narrow amplitude intervals. Only for sufficiently large values of the amplitude, the system enters a permanently unstable regime. These findings also clarify the long-standing problem of the relaxation to equilibrium in the short-range FPU model. Because of the weaker localization in mode space of this latter model, the transfer of energy is retarded and relaxation occurs on a much longer time-scale.

Linear Amplification of Optical Signal in Coupled Photonic Crystal Waveguides

We introduce a weakly coupled photonic crystal waveguide as a promising and realistic model for all-optical amplification. A symmetric pillar type coupled photonic crystal waveguide consisting of dielectric rods periodically distributed in a free space is proposed as all-optical amplifier. Using the unique features of the photonic crystals to control and guide the light, we have properly chosen the frequency at which only one mode (odd mode) becomes the propagating mode in the coupled photonic crystal waveguide, whereas another mode (even mode) is completely reflected from the guiding structure. Under this condition, the all-optical amplification is fully realized. The amplification coefficient for the continuous signal and the Gaussian pulse is calculated.

Nonlinear All Optical Digital Amplification of the Light Pulse in Weakly Coupled Photonic Crystal Waveguides

All-optical amplification of the light pulse in a weakly coupled two nonlinear photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) is proposed. We consider pillar-type PCWs, which consist of the periodically distributed circular rods made from a Kerr-type dielectric material. Dispersion diagrams of the symmetric and antisymmetric modes are calculated. The operating frequency is properly chosen to be located at the edge of the dispersion diagram of the modes. In the linear case no propagation modes are excited at this frequency, however, in case of nonlinear medium when the amplitude of the injected signal is above some threshold value, the solitons are formed and they are propagating inside the coupled nonlinear PCWs. Near field distributions of the light pulse propagation inside the coupled nonlinear PCWs and the output powers of the registered signals are studied in a detail. The amplification coefficient is calculated at the various amplitudes of the launched signal. The results vividly demonstrate the effectiveness of the weakly coupled nonlinear PCWs as all-optical digital amplifier.

All optical Amplification in Metallic Subwavelength Linear Waveguides

Proposed all optical amplification scenario is based on the properties of light propagation in two coupled subwavelength metallic slab waveguides where for particular choice of waveguide parameters two propagating (symmetric) and non-propagating (antisymmetric) eigenmodes coexist. For such a setup incident beams realize boundary conditions for forming a stationary state as a superposition of mentioned eigenmodes. It is shown both analytically and numerically that amplification rate in this completely linear mechanism diverges for small signal values.

Dipolar needles in the microcanonical ensemble: evidence of spontaneous magnetization and ergodicity breaking

We have studied needle shaped three-dimensional classical spin systems with purely dipolar interactions in the microcanonical ensemble, using both numerical simulations and analytical approximations. We have observed spontaneous magnetization for different finite cubic lattices. The transition from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic phase is shown to be first-order. For two lattice types we have observed magnetization flips in the phase transition region. In some cases, gaps in the accessible values of magnetization appear, a signature of the ergodicity breaking found for systems with long-range interactions. We analytically explain these effects by performing a nontrivial mapping of the model Hamiltonian onto a one-dimensional Ising model with competing antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and ferromagnetic mean-field interactions. These results hint at performing experiments on isolated dipolar needles in order to verify some of the exotic properties of systems with long-range interactions in the microcanonical ensemble.

Negative refraction and spatial echo in optical waveguide arrays

The special symmetry properties of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation allow a complete revival of the initial wavefunction. That is employed in the context of stationary propagation of light in a waveguide array. As an inverting system we propose a short array of almost isolated waveguides which cause a relative pi phase shift in the neighboring waveguides. By means of numerical simulations of the model equations we demonstrate a novel mechanism for the negative refraction of spatial solitons.

Correlated metallic two particle bound states in quasiperiodic chains

Single particle states in a chain with quasiperiodic potential show a metal-insulator transition upon the change of the potential strength. We consider two particles with local interaction in the single particle insulating regime. The two particle states change from being localized to delocalized upon an increase of the interaction strength to a nonperturbative finite value. At even larger interaction strength the states become localized again. This transition of two particle bound states into a correlated metal is due to a resonant mixing of the noninteracting two particle eigenstates. In the discovered correlated metal states two particles move coherently together through the whole chain, therefore contributing to a finite conductivity.

Realization of Discrete Quantum Billiard in 2D Optical Lattices

We propose the method for optical visualization of Bose-Hubbard model with two interacting bosons in the form of two-dimensional (2D) optical lattices consisting of optical waveguides, where the waveguides at the diagonal are characterized by different refractive index than others elsewhere, modeling the boson-boson interaction. We study the light intensity distribution function averaged over direction of propagation for both ordered and disordered cases, exploring sensitivity of the averaged picture with respect to the beam injection position. For our finite systems the resulting patterns reminiscent the ones set in billiards and therefore we introduce a definition of discrete quantum billiard discussing the possible relevance to its well established continuous counterpart.

Two interacting particles in a random potential

We study the scaling of the localization length of two interacting particles in a one-dimensional random lattice with the single particle localization length. We obtain several regimes, among them one interesting weak Fock space disorder regime. In this regime we derive a weak logarithmic scaling law. Numerical data support the absence of any strong enhancement of the two particle localization length.

Interaction induced fractional Bloch and tunneling oscillations

We study the dynamics of few interacting bosons in a one-dimensional lattice with dc bias. In the absence of interactions the system displays single particle Bloch oscillations. For strong interaction the Bloch oscillation regime reemerges with fractional Bloch periods which are inversely proportional to the number of bosons clustered into a bound state. The interaction strength is affecting the oscillation amplitude. Excellent agreement is found between numerical data and a composite particle dynamics approach. For specific values of the interaction strength a particle will tunnel from the interacting cloud to a well defined distant lattice location.

Nonlinear Landau-Zener Tunnelling in Coupled Waveguide Arrays

The possibility of direct observation of Nonlinear Landau-Zener tunnelling effect with a device consisting of two waveguide arrays connected with a tilted reduced refractive index barrier is discussed. Numerical simulations on this realistic setup are interpreted via simplified double well system and different asymmetric tunnelling scenarios were predicted just varying injected beam intensity.

Delocalization and spreading in a nonlinear Stark ladder

We study the evolution of a wave packet in a nonlinear Schrödinger lattice equation subject to a dc bias. In the absence of nonlinearity all normal modes are spatially localized giving rise to a Stark ladder with an equidistant eigenvalue spectrum and Bloch oscillations. Nonlinearity induces frequency shifts and mode-mode interactions and destroys localization. With increasing strength of nonlinearity we observe: (I) localization as a transient, with subsequent subdiffusion (weak mode-mode interactions); (II) immediate subdiffusion (strong mode-mode interactions); (III) single site trapping as a transient, with subsequent explosive spreading, followed by subdiffusion. For single mode excitations and weak nonlinearities stability intervals are predicted and observed upon variation of the dc bias strength, which affect the short and long time dynamics.

Gap soliton dynamics in an optical lattice as a parametrically driven pendulum

A long wavelength optical lattice is generated in a two-level medium by low-frequency contrapropagating beams. Then a short wave length gap soliton generated by evanescent boundary instability (supratransmission) undergoes a dynamics shown to obey the Newton equation of the parametrically driven pendulum, hence presenting extremely rich, possibly chaotic, dynamical behavior. The theory is sustained by numerical simulations and provides an efficient tool to study soliton trajectories.

Spatial solitons rays in periodic optical lattices

The light ray of a spatial soliton in an optical film whose refractive index is smoothly modulated (wavelength much larger than the typical soliton width) in both spatial directions is shown to possess chaotic regimes for which the propagation is erratic. This is interpreted as a parametric driven pendulum, obtained by a new perturbative approach of the Maxwell equation. These findings are then demonstrated to compare well to the eikonal law of light ray propagation (nonlinearity compensates diffraction).

Nonlinear supratransmission and bistability in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam model

The recently discovered phenomenon of nonlinear supratransmission consists in a sudden increase of the amplitude of a transmitted wave triggered by the excitation of nonlinear localized modes of the medium. We examine this process for the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chain, sinusoidally driven at one edge and damped at the other. The supratransmission regime occurs for driving frequencies above the upper band-edge and originates from direct moving discrete breather creation. We derive approximate analytical estimates of the supratransmission threshold, which are in excellent agreement with numerics. When analysing the long-time behavior, we discover that, below the supratransmission threshold, a conducting stationary state coexists with the insulating one. We explain the bistable nature of the energy flux in terms of the excitation of quasi-harmonic extended waves. This leads to the analytical calculation of a lower-transmission threshold which is also in reasonable agreement with numerical experiments.

Goldstone mode kink-solitons in double layer quantum Hall systems

It is shown that in charge unbalanced double layer quantum Hall system with zero tunneling pseudospin Goldstone mode excitations form moving kink-soliton in weakly nonlinear limit. This charge-density localization moves with a velocity of gapless linear spin-wave mode and could be easily observed experimentally. We claim that mentioned Goldstone mode kink-solitons define diffusionless charge transport properties in double layer quantum Hall systems.

Interaction of a Kink-Soliton with a Breather in a Fermi-Pasta-Ulam Chain

Collision process between breather and moving kink-soliton is investigated both analytically and numerically in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chains. As it is shown by both analytical and numerical consideration low amplitude breathers and soft kinks retain their shapes after interaction. Low amplitude breather only changes the location after collision and remains static. As the numerical simulations show, the shift of its position is proportional to the stiffness of the kink-soliton, what is in accordance with the analytical predictions made in this paper. The numerical experiments are also carried out for large amplitude breathers and some interesting effects are observed: The odd parity large amplitude breather does not change position when colliding with widely separated soft kink-antikink pair, whilst in the case of closely placed kink-antikink pair the breather transforms into the moving one. Therefore it is suggested that the "harmless" objects similar to the kink-solitons in FPU chains could be used in order to displace or move the strongly localized structures in realistic physical systems. In particular, the analogies with quasi-one dimensional easy-plane type spin structures are discussed.
