Analytical Study of Quantum Feedback Enhanced Rabi Oscillations

We present an analytical solution of the single photon quantum feedback in a cavity quantum electrodynamics system based on a half cavity set-up coupled to a structured continuum. The exact analytical expression we obtain allows us to discuss in detail under which conditions a single emitter-cavity system, which is initially in the weak coupling regime, can be driven into the strong coupling regime via the proposed quantum feedback mechanism [Carmele et al, Phys.Rev.Lett. 110, 013601]. Our results reveal that the feedback induced oscillations rely on a well-defined relationship between the delay time and the atom-light coupling strength of the emitter. At these specific values the leakage into the continuum is prevented by a destructive interference effect, which pushes the emitter to the strong coupling limit.

Hybrid Quantum Systems with Collectively Coupled Spin States: Suppression of Decoherence through Spectral Hole Burning

Spin ensemble based hybrid quantum systems suffer from a significant degree of decoherence resulting from the inhomogeneous broadening of the spin transition frequencies in the ensemble. We demonstrate that this strongly restrictive drawback can be overcome simply by burning two narrow spectral holes in the spin spectral density at judiciously chosen frequencies. Using this procedure we find an increase of the coherence time by more than an order of magnitude as compared to the case without hole burning. Our findings pave the way for the practical use of these hybrid quantum systems for the processing of quantum information.

Steady-state ab-initio laser theory for lasers with fully or nearly degenerate resonator modes

We investigate the range of validity of the recently developed steady-state ab-initio laser theory (SALT). While very efficient in describing various microlasers, SALT is conventionally believed not to be applicable to lasers featuring fully or nearly degenerate pairs of resonator modes above the lasing threshold. Here we demonstrate how SALT can indeed be extended to describe such cases as well, with the effect that we significantly broaden the theory's scope. In particular, we show how to use SALT in conjunction with a linear stability analysis to obtain stable single-mode lasing solutions that involve a degenerate mode pair. Our flexible and efficient approach is tested on one-dimensional ring lasers as well as on two-dimensional microdisk lasers with broken symmetry.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a single-mode cavity strongly coupled to an inhomogeneously broadened spin ensemble

We study the dynamics of a spin ensemble strongly coupled to a single-mode resonator driven by external pulses. When the mean frequency of the spin ensemble is in resonance with the cavity mode, damped Rabi oscillations are found between the spin ensemble and the cavity mode which we describe very accurately, including the dephasing effect of the inhomogeneous spin broadening. We demonstrate that a precise knowledge of this broadening is crucial both for a qualitative and a quantitative understanding of the temporal spin-cavity dynamics. On this basis we show that coherent oscillations between the spin ensemble and the cavity can be enhanced by a few orders of magnitude, when driving the system with pulses that match special resonance conditions. Our theoretical approach is tested successfully with an experiment based on an ensemble of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond strongly coupled to a superconducting coplanar single-mode waveguide resonator.

Protecting a Spin Ensemble against Decoherence in the Strong-Coupling Regime of Cavity QED

Hybrid quantum systems based on spin ensembles coupled to superconducting microwave cavities are promising candidates for robust experiments in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) and for future technologies employing quantum mechanical effects. Currently the main source of decoherence in these systems is inho- mogeneous spin broadening, which limits their performance for the coherent transfer and storage of quantum information. Here we study the dynamics of a superconducting cavity strongly coupled to an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. We experimentally observe for the first time, how decoherence induced by a non-Lorentzian spin distribution can be suppressed in the strong-coupling regime - a phenomenon known as "cavity protection". To demonstrate the potential of this effect for coherent control schemes, we show how appropriately chosen microwave pulses can increase the amplitude of coherent oscillations between cavity and spin ensemble by two orders of magnitude.

Route from spontaneous decay to complex multimode dynamics in cavity QED

We study the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of an emitter inside an open multimode cavity, focusing on the case where the emitter is resonant with high-frequency cavity modes. Based on a Green's function technique suited for open photonic structures, we study the crossovers between three distinct regimes as the coupling strength is gradually increased: (i) overdamped decay with a time scale given by the Purcell modified decay rate, (ii) underdamped oscillations with a time scale given by the effective vacuum Rabi frequency, and (iii) pulsed revivals. The final multimode strong coupling regime (iii) gives rise to quantum revivals of the atomic inversion on a time scale associated with the cavity round-trip time. We show that the crucial parameter to capture the crossovers between these regimes is the nonlinear Lamb shift, accounted for exactly in our formalism.

Realization of Discrete Quantum Billiard in 2D Optical Lattices

We propose the method for optical visualization of Bose-Hubbard model with two interacting bosons in the form of two-dimensional (2D) optical lattices consisting of optical waveguides, where the waveguides at the diagonal are characterized by different refractive index than others elsewhere, modeling the boson-boson interaction. We study the light intensity distribution function averaged over direction of propagation for both ordered and disordered cases, exploring sensitivity of the averaged picture with respect to the beam injection position. For our finite systems the resulting patterns reminiscent the ones set in billiards and therefore we introduce a definition of discrete quantum billiard discussing the possible relevance to its well established continuous counterpart.

Two interacting particles in a random potential

We study the scaling of the localization length of two interacting particles in a one-dimensional random lattice with the single particle localization length. We obtain several regimes, among them one interesting weak Fock space disorder regime. In this regime we derive a weak logarithmic scaling law. Numerical data support the absence of any strong enhancement of the two particle localization length.

Influence of the backward propagating waves on the threshold in planar nematic liquid crystal films

We analyze theoretically the influence of backward propagating waves on the primary threshold when a linearly polarized light impinges at normal incidence on a planarly aligned nematic liquid crystal films. We show, that the primary threshold, as a function of the phase delay induced by the nematic layer, exhibits oscillations. The amplitude of oscillations depends strongly on the drop of the refractivity indices of the nematic and outer media at the boundaries.

Interaction induced fractional Bloch and tunneling oscillations

We study the dynamics of few interacting bosons in a one-dimensional lattice with dc bias. In the absence of interactions the system displays single particle Bloch oscillations. For strong interaction the Bloch oscillation regime reemerges with fractional Bloch periods which are inversely proportional to the number of bosons clustered into a bound state. The interaction strength is affecting the oscillation amplitude. Excellent agreement is found between numerical data and a composite particle dynamics approach. For specific values of the interaction strength a particle will tunnel from the interacting cloud to a well defined distant lattice location.

Delocalization and spreading in a nonlinear Stark ladder

We study the evolution of a wave packet in a nonlinear Schrödinger lattice equation subject to a dc bias. In the absence of nonlinearity all normal modes are spatially localized giving rise to a Stark ladder with an equidistant eigenvalue spectrum and Bloch oscillations. Nonlinearity induces frequency shifts and mode-mode interactions and destroys localization. With increasing strength of nonlinearity we observe: (I) localization as a transient, with subsequent subdiffusion (weak mode-mode interactions); (II) immediate subdiffusion (strong mode-mode interactions); (III) single site trapping as a transient, with subsequent explosive spreading, followed by subdiffusion. For single mode excitations and weak nonlinearities stability intervals are predicted and observed upon variation of the dc bias strength, which affect the short and long time dynamics.

Optically induced orientational transitions in nematics with planar alignment

Theoretical study of dynamical phenomena induced by a linearly polarized plane wave incident perpendicularly on a planar aligned nematic layer with the light intensity as the control parameter is reported. We find the threshold of the Optically Induced Freedericksz Transition for the planar state as a function of the problem parameters. It occurs that the threshold is substantially lower than that expected before. Above the primary instability the director settles either to a stationary or to an oscillatory states depending on a thickness of the layer. These states become unstable at a secondary threshold through a heteroclinic bifurcation and the director settles to a new stationary distorted state.

Light-driven liquid crystalline nonlinear oscillator under optical periodic forcing

An all-optically driven strategy to govern a liquid crystalline collective molecular nonlinear oscillator is discussed. It does not require external feedbacks of any kind while the oscillator and a time-depending perturbation both are sustained by incident light. Various dynamical regimes such as frequency -locked, quasiperiodic, forced and chaotic are observed in agreement with a theoretical approach developed in the limit of the plane wave approximation.
