Short-time existence for the network flow

This paper contains a new proof of the short-time existence for the flow by curvature of a network of curves in the plane. Appearing initially in metallurgy and as a model for the evolution of grain boundaries, this flow was later treated by Brakke \cite{Br} using varifold methods. There is good reason to treat this problem by a direct PDE approach, but doing so requires one to deal with the singular nature of the PDE at the vertices of the network. This was handled in cases of increasing generality by Bronsard-Reitich \cite{BrRe}, Mantegazza-Novaga-Tortorelli \cite{MNT} and eventually, in the most general case of irregular networks by Ilmanen-Neves-Schulze \cite{INS}. Although the present paper proves a result similar to the one in \cite{INS}, the method here provides substantially more detailed information about how an irregular network `resolves' into a regular one. Either approach relies on the existence of self-similar expanding solutions found in \cite{MS}. As a precursor to and illustration of the main theorem, we also prove an unexpected regularity result for the mixed Cauchy-Dirichlet boundary problem for the linear heat equation on a manifold with boundary.

Conical metrics on Riemann surfaces, I: the compactified configuration space and regularity

We introduce a compactification of the space of simple positive divisors on a Riemann surface, as well as a compactification of the universal family of punctured surfaces above this space. These are real manifolds with corners. We then study the space of constant curvature metrics on this Riemann surface with prescribed conical singularities at these divisors. Our interest here is in the local deformation for these metrics, and in particular the behavior as conic points coalesce. We prove a sharp regularity theorem for this phenomenon in the regime where these metrics are known to exist. This setting will be used in a subsequent paper to study the space of spherical conic metrics with large cone angles, where the existence theory is still incomplete.

Opers versus nonabelian Hodge

For a complex simple simply connected Lie group $G$, and a compact Riemann surface $C$, we consider two sorts of families of flat $G$-connections over $C$. Each family is determined by a point ${\mathbf u}$ of the base of Hitchin's integrable system for $(G,C)$. One family $\nabla_{\hbar,{\mathbf u}}$ consists of $G$-opers, and depends on $\hbar \in {\mathbb C}^\times$. The other family $\nabla_{R,ζ,{\mathbf u}}$ is built from solutions of Hitchin's equations, and depends on $ζ\in {\mathbb C}^\times, R \in {\mathbb R}^+$. We show that in the scaling limit $R \to 0$, $ζ= \hbar R$, we have $\nabla_{R,ζ,{\mathbf u}} \to \nabla_{\hbar,{\mathbf u}}$. This establishes and generalizes a conjecture formulated by Gaiotto.

The Novikov conjecture on Cheeger spaces

We prove the Novikov conjecture on oriented Cheeger spaces whose fundamental group satisfies the strong Novikov conjecture. A Cheeger space is a stratified pseudomanifold admitting, through a choice of ideal boundary conditions, an L2-de Rham cohomology theory satisfying Poincare duality. We prove that this cohomology theory is invariant under stratified homotopy equivalences and that its signature is invariant under Cheeger space cobordism. Analogous results, after coupling with a Mishchenko bundle associated to any Galois covering, allow us to carry out the analytic approach to the Novikov conjecture: we define higher analytic signatures of a Cheeger space and prove that they are stratified homotopy invariants whenever the assembly map is rationally injective. Finally we show that the analytic signature of a Cheeger space coincides with its topological signature as defined by Banagl.

Higher codimension isoperimetric problems

We consider a variational problem for submanifolds Q $\subset$ M with nonempty boundary $\partial$Q = K. We propose the definition that the boundary K of any critical point Q have constant mean curvature, which seems to be a new perspective when dim Q \textless{} dim M . We then construct small nearly-spherical solutions of this higher codimension CMC prob-lem; these concentrate near the critical points of a certain curvature function.

Hodge theory on Cheeger spaces

We extend the study of the de Rham operator with ideal boundary conditions from the case of isolated conic singularities, as analyzed by Cheeger, to the case of arbitrary stratified pseudomanifolds. We introduce a class of ideal boundary operators and the notion of mezzoperversity, which intermediates between the standard lower and upper middle perversities in intersection theory, as interpreted in this de Rham setting, and show that the de Rham operator with these boundary conditions is Fredholm and has compact resolvent. We also prove an isomorphism between the resulting Hodge and L2 de Rham cohomology groups, and that these are independent of the choice of iterated edge metric. On spaces which admit ideal boundary conditions of this type which are also self-dual, which we call `Cheeger spaces', we show that these Hodge/de Rham cohomology groups satisfy Poincare Duality.

Kahler-Einstein metrics with edge singularities

This article considers the existence and regularity of Kahler-Einstein metrics on a compact Kahler manifold $M$ with edge singularities with cone angle $2πβ$ along a smooth divisor $D$. We prove existence of such metrics with negative, zero and some positive cases for all cone angles $2πβ\leq 2π$. The results in the positive case parallel those in the smooth case. We also establish that solutions of this problem are polyhomogeneous, i.e., have a complete asymptotic expansion with smooth coefficients along $D$ for all $2πβ< 2π$.

Limiting configurations for solutions of Hitchin's equation

We review recent work on the compactification of the moduli space of Hitchin's self-duality equation. We study the degeneration behavior near the ends of this moduli space in a set of generic directions by showing how limiting configurations can be desingularized. Following ideas of Hitchin, we can relate the top boundary stratum of this space of limiting configurations to a Prym variety. A key rôle is played by the family of rotationally symmetric solutions to the self-duality equation on $\mathbb C$, which we discuss in detail here.

On the asymptotic behavior of minimal surfaces in H${}^2$$\times$R

We consider the asymptotic behavior of properly embedded minimal surfaces in the product of the hyperbolic plane with the line, taking into account the fact that there is more than one natural compactification of this space. This provides a better setting in which to consider the general problem of determining which curves at infinity are the asymptotic boundary of such minimal surfaces. We also construct some new examples of such surfaces and describe the boundary regularity.

Ricci flow on surfaces with conic singularities

We establish the short-time existence of the Ricci flow on surfaces with a finite number of conic points, all with cone angle between 0 and $2π$, where the cone angles remain fixed or change in some smooth prescribed way. For the angle-preserving flow we prove long-time existence and convergence. When the Troyanov angle condition is satisfied (equivalently, when the data is logarithmically K-stable), the flow converges to the unique constant curvature metric with the given cone angles; if this condition is not satisfied, the flow converges subsequentially to a soliton. This is the one-dimensional version of the Hamilton--Tian conjecture.

Teichmüller theory for conic surfaces

In this paper we develop a systematic deformation theory for conic constant curvature metrics on a closed surface when all cone angles are less than $2π$; in particular, we define and study the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}^{\mathrm{conic}}_{γ,k}$ of conic constant curvature metrics on a surface of genus $γ$ with $k$ conic points. The methods here are adopted from higher dimensional global analysis, generalizing Tromba's approach to the study of the standard Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}_γ$. The main new ingredient is the theory of elliptic conic operators.

Ends of the moduli space of Higgs bundles

We associate to each stable Higgs pair $(A_0,Φ_0)$ on a compact Riemann surface $X$ a singular limiting configuration $(A_\infty,Φ_\infty)$, assuming that $\det Φ$ has only simple zeroes. We then prove a desingularization theorem by constructing a family of solutions $(A_t,tΦ_t)$ to Hitchin's equations which converge to this limiting configuration as $t \to \infty$. This provides a new proof, via gluing methods, for elements in the ends of the Higgs bundle moduli space and identifies a dense open subset of the boundary of the compactification of this moduli space.

Harnack Inequalities and Heat-kernel Estimates for Degenerate Diffusion Operators Arising in Population Biology

This paper continues the analysis, started in [2, 3], of a class of degenerate elliptic operators defined on manifolds with corners, which arise in Population Biology. Using techniques pioneered by J. Moser, and extended and refined by L. Saloff-Coste, Grigoryan, and Sturm, we show that weak solutions to the parabolic problem defined by a sub-class of these operators, which consists of those that can be defined by Dirichlet forms and have non-vanishing transverse vector field, satisfy a Harnack inequality. This allows us to conclude that the solutions to these equations belong, for positive times, to the natural anisotropic Holder spaces, and also leads to upper and, in some cases, lower bounds for the heat kernels of these operators. These results imply that these operators have a compact resolvent when acting on $C^0$ or $L^2.$ The proof relies upon a scale invariant Poincare inequality that we establish for a large class of weighted Dirichlet forms, as well as estimates to handle certain mildly singular perturbation terms. The weights that we consider are neither Ahlfors regular, nor do they generally belong to the Muckenhaupt class $A_2.$

Renormalized volume and the evolution of APEs

We study the evolution of the renormalized volume functional for asymptotically Poincare-Einstein metrics (M,g) which are evolving by normalized Ricci flow. In particular, we prove that the time derivative of the renormalized volume along the flow is the negative integral of scal(g(t)) + n(n-1) over the manifold. This implies that if scal(g(0))+n(n-1) is non-negative at t=0, then the renormalized volume decreases monotonically. We also discuss how, when n=4, our results describe the Hawking-Page phase transition. Differences in renormalized volumes give rigorous meaning to the Hawking-Page difference of actions and describe the free energy liberated in the transition.

The moduli space of asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau manifolds

We prove that the deformation theory of compactifiable asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau manifolds is unobstructed. This relies on a detailed study of the Dolbeault-Hodge theory and its description in terms of the cohomology of the compactification. We also show that these Calabi-Yau metrics admit a polyhomogeneous expansion at infinity, a result that we extend to asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau metrics as well. We then study the moduli space of Calabi-Yau deformations that fix the complex structure at infinity. There is a Weil-Petersson metric on this space which we show is Kähler. By proving a local families L^2 index theorem, we exhibit its Kähler form as a multiple of the curvature of a certain determinant line bundle.

Analytic Torsion on Manifolds with Edges

Let (M,g) be an odd-dimensional incomplete compact Riemannian singular space with a simple edge singularity. We study the analytic torsion on M, and in particular consider how it depends on the metric g. If g is an admissible edge metric, we prove that the torsion zeta function is holomorphic near s = 0, hence the torsion is well-defined, but possibly depends on g. In general dimensions, we prove that the analytic torsion depends only on the asymptotic structure of g near the singular stratum of M; when the dimension of the edge is odd, we prove that the analytic torsion is independent of the choice of admissible edge metric. The main tool is the construction, via the methodology of geometric microlocal analysis, of the heat kernel for the Friedrichs extension of the Hodge Laplacian in all degrees. In this way we obtain detailed asymptotics of this heat kernel and its trace.

Complete Willmore surfaces in H3 with bounded energy: boundary regularity and bubbling

We study various aspects related to boundary regularity of complete properly embedded Willmore surfaces in H3, particularly those related to assumptions on boundedness or smallness of a certain weighted version of the Willmore energy. We prove, in particular, that small energy controls C1 boundary regularity. We examine the possible lack of C1 convergence for sequences of surfaces with bounded Willmore energy and find that the mechanism responsible for this is a bubbling phenomenon, where energy escapes to infinity.

Elliptic theory of differential edge operators, II: boundary value problems

This is a continuation of the first author's development of the theory of elliptic differential operators with edge degeneracies. That first paper treated basic mapping theory, focusing on semi-Fredholm properties on weighted Sobolev and Hölder spaces and regularity in the form of asymptotic expansions of solutions. The present paper builds on this through the formulation of boundary conditions and the construction of parametrices for the associated boundary problems. As before, the emphasis is on the geometric microlocal structure of the Schwartz kernels of parametrices and generalized inverses.

Minimal surfaces with positive genus and finite total curvature in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$

We construct the first examples of complete, properly embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ with finite total curvature and positive genus. These are constructed by gluing copies of horizontal catenoids or other nondegenerate summands. We also establish that every horizontal catenoid is nondegenerate. Finally, using the same techniques, we are able to produce properly embedded minimal surfaces with infinitely many ends. Each annular end has finite total curvature and is asymptotic to a vertical totally geodesic plane.

Non-CMC solutions of the Einstein constraint equations on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds

In this note we prove two existence theorems for the Einstein constraint equations on asymptotically Euclidean manifolds. The first is for arbitrary mean curvature functions with restrictions on the size of the transverse-traceless data and the non-gravitational field data, while the second assumes a near-CMC condition, with no other restrictions.

Refined intersection homology on non-Witt spaces

We develop a generalization to non-Witt spaces of the intersection homology theory of Goresky-MacPherson. The second author has described the self-dual sheaves compatible with intersection homology, and the other authors have described a generalization of Cheeger's L2 de Rham cohomology. In this paper we extend both of these cohomologies by describing all sheaf complexes in the derived category of constructible sheaves that are compatible with middle perversity intersection cohomology, though not necessarily self-dual. On Thom-Mather stratified spaces this refined intersection cohomology theory coincides with the analytic de Rham theory.

The Nahm Pole Boundary Condition

The Nahm pole boundary condition for certain gauge theory equations in four and five dimensions is defined by requiring that a solution should have a specified singularity along the boundary. In the present paper, we show that this boundary condition is elliptic and has regularity properties analogous to more standard elliptic boundary conditions. We also establish a uniqueness theorem for the solution of the relevant equations on a half-space with Nahm pole boundary conditions. These results are expected to have a generalization involving knots, with applications to the Jones polynomial and Khovanov homology.

The Yamabe problem on Dirichlet spaces

We continue our previous work studying critical exponent semilinear elliptic (and subelliptic) problems which generalize the classical Yamabe problem. In [3] the focus was on metric-measure spaces with an `almost smooth' structure, with stratified spaces furnishing the key examples. The criterion for solvability there is phrased in terms of a strict inequality of the global Yamabe invariant with a `local Yamabe invariant', which captures information about the local singular structure. All of this is generalized here to the setting of Dirichlet spaces which admit a Sobolev inequality and satisfy a few other mild hypotheses. Applications include a new approach to the nonspherical part of the CR Yamabe problem.

Multiple-layer solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation on hyperbolic space

In this paper we study the existence of multiple-layer solutions to the elliptic Allen-Cahn equation in hyperbolic space: \[ -Δ_{\mathbb H} u+F'(u)=0; \] here $F$ is a nonnegative double-well potential with nondegenerate minima. We prove that for any collection of widely separated, non-intersecting hyperplanes in ${\mathbb H}$, there is a solution to this equation which has nodal set very close to this collection of hyperplanes. Unlike the corresponding problem in $\RR^n$, there are no constraints beyond the separation parameter.

Resolvent of the Laplacian on geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds

For geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds $Γ\backslash H^{n+1}$, we prove the meromorphic extension of the resolvent of Laplacian, Poincaré series, Einsenstein series and scattering operator to the whole complex plane. We also deduce the asymptotics of lattice points of $Γ$ in large balls of $H^{n+1}$ in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of $Γ$.

Spectral theory for the Weil-Petersson Laplacian on the Riemann moduli space

We study the spectral geometric properties of the scalar Laplace-Beltrami operator associated to the Weil-Petersson metric $g_{\mathrm{WP}}$ on $\mathcal M_γ$, the Riemann moduli space of surfaces of genus $γ> 1$. This space has a singular compactification with respect to $g_{\mathrm{WP}}$, and this metric has crossing cusp-edge singularities along a finite collection of simple normal crossing divisors. We prove first that the scalar Laplacian is essentially self-adjoint, which then implies that its spectrum is discrete. The second theorem is a Weyl asymptotic formula for the counting function for this spectrum.

preprint2012arXiv

The Yamabe problem on stratified spaces

We introduce new invariants of a Riemannian singular space, the local Yamabe and Sobolev constants, and then go on to prove a general version of the Yamabe theorem under that the global Yamabe invariant of the space is strictly less than one or the other of these local invariants. This rests on a small number of structural assumptions about the space and of the behavior of the scalar curvature function on its smooth locus. The second half of this paper shows how this result applies in the category of smoothly stratified pseudomanifolds, and we also prove sharp regularity for the solutions on these spaces. This sharpens and generalizes the results of Akutagawa and Botvinnik \cite{AB} on the Yamabe problem on spaces with isolated conic singularities.

Degenerate Diffusion Operators Arising in Population Biology

We analyze a class of partial differential equations that arise as "backwards Kolmogorov operators" in infinite population limits of the Wright-Fisher models in population genetics and in mathematical finance. These are degenerate elliptic operators defined on manifolds with corners. The classical example is the Kimura diffusion operator, which acts on functions defined on the simplex in R^n. We introduce anisotropic Holder spaces, and prove existence, uniqueness and regularity results for the heat and resolvent equations defined by this class of operators. This suffices to prove that the C^0-graph closure generates a strongly continuous semigroup, and that the associated Martingale problem has a unique solution. We give a detailed description of the nullspace of the forward Kolmogorov operator.

Infinitesimal rigidity of cone-manifolds and the Stoker problem for hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra

The deformation theory of hyperbolic and Euclidean cone-manifolds with all cone angles less then 2π plays an important role in many problems in low dimensional topology and in the geometrization of 3-manifolds. Furthermore, various old conjectures dating back to Stoker about the moduli of convex hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra can be reduced to the study of deformations of cone-manifolds by doubling a polyhedron across its faces. This deformation theory has been understood by Hodgson and Kerckhoff when the singular set has no vertices, and by Weiß when the cone angles are less than π. We prove here an infinitesimal rigidity result valid for cone angles less than 2π, stating that infinitesimal deformations which leave the dihedral angles fixed are trivial in the hyperbolic case, and reduce to some simple deformations in the Euclidean case. The method is to treat this as a problem concerning the deformation theory of singular Einstein metrics, and to apply analytic methods about elliptic operators on stratified spaces. This work is an important ingredient in the local deformation theory of cone-manifolds by the second author, see also the concurrent work by Weiß.

Ricci Flow in Two Dimensions

Ricci flow on two dimensional surfaces is far simpler than in the higher dimensional cases. This presents an opportunity to obtain much more detailed and comprehensive results. We review the basic facts about this flow, including the original results by Hamilton and Chow concerning Ricci flow on compact surfaces. The rationale for this paper, however, is especially to survey recent work concerning this flow on open surfaces, including various classes of both complete and incomplete surfaces, where a number of striking new phenomena have been observed.

The signature package on Witt spaces

In this paper we prove a variety of results about the signature operator on Witt spaces. First, we give a parametrix construction for the signature operator on any compact, oriented, stratified pseudomanifold X which satisfies the Witt condition. This construction, which is inductive over the `depth' of the singularity, is then used to show that the signature operator is essentially self-adjoint and has discrete spectrum of finite multiplicity, so that its index -- the analytic signature of X -- is well-defined. This provides an alternate approach to some well-known results due to Cheeger. We then prove some new results. By coupling this parametrix construction to a C*_rΓ-Mishchenko bundle associated to any Galois covering of X with covering group Γ, we prove analogues of the same analytic results, from which it follows that one may define an analytic signature index class as an element of the K-theory of C*_rΓ. We go on to establish in this setting and for this class the full range of conclusions which sometimes goes by the name of the signature package. In particular, we prove a new and purely topological theorem, asserting the stratified homotopy invariance of the higher signatures of X, defined through the homology L-class of X, whenever the rational assembly map K_* (BΓ)\otimes\bbQ \to K_*(C*_r Γ)\otimes \bbQ is injective.

Ricci flow on asymptotically conical surfaces with nontrivial topology

As part of the general investigation of Ricci flow on complete surfaces with finite total curvature, we study this flow for surfaces with asymptotically conical (which includes as a special case asymptotically Euclidean) geometries. After establishing long-time existence, and in particular the fact that the flow preserves the asymptotically conic geometry, we prove that the solution metric $g(t)$ expands at a locally uniform linear rate; moreover, the rescaled family of metrics $t^{-1}g(t)$ exhibits a transition at infinite time inasmuch as it converges locally uniformly to a complete, finite area hyperbolic metric which is the unique uniformizing metric in the conformal class of the initial metric $g_0$.

Gluing and wormholes for the Einstein constraint equations

We establish a general gluing theorem for constant mean curvature solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations. This allows one to take connected sums of solutions or to glue a handle (wormhole) onto any given solution. Away from this handle region, the initial data sets we produce can be made as close as desired to the original initial data sets. These constructions can be made either when the initial manifold is compact or asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic, with suitable corresponding conditions on the extrinsic curvature. In the compact setting a mild nondegeneracy condition is required. In the final section of the paper, we list a number ways this construction may be used to produce new types of vacuum spacetimes.

preprint2002arXiv

On the topology of vacuum spacetimes

We prove that there are no restrictions on the spatial topology of asymptotically flat solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations in (n+1)-dimensions. We do this by gluing a solution of the vacuum constraint equations on an arbitrary compact manifold to an asymptotically Euclidean solution of the constraints on R^n. For any compact manifold which does not admit a metric of positive scalar curvature, this provides for the existence of asymptotically flat vacuum spacetimes with no maximal slices. Our main theorem is a special case of a more general gluing construction for nondegenerate solutions of the vacuum constraint equations which have some restrictions on the mean curvature, but for which the mean curvature is not necessarily constant. This generalizes the construction [IMP] (gr-qc/0109045), which is restricted to constant mean curvature data.

A construction of singular solutions for a semilinear elliptic equation using asymptotic analysis

The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of weak solutions to the equation $Δu + u^p = 0$ which are positive in a domain $Ω\subset {\Bbb R}^N$, vanish at the boundary, and have prescribed isolated singularities. The exponent $p$ is required to lie in the interval $(N/(N-2), (N+2)/(N-2))$. We also prove the existence of solutions to the equation $Δu + u^p = 0$ which are positive in a domain $Ω\subset {\Bbb R}^n$ and which are singular along arbitrary smooth $k$-dimensional submanifolds in the interior of these domains provided $p$ lie in the interval $((n - k)/(n-k-2), (n-k+2)/(n-k-2))$. A particular case is when $p = (n+2)/(n-2)$, in which case solutions correspond to solutions of the singular Yamabe problem. The method used is a mixture of different ingredients used by both authors in their separate constructions of solutions to the singular Yamabe problem, along with a new set of scaling techniques.
