Bethe states on a quantum computer: success probability and correlation functions

A probabilistic algorithm for preparing Bethe eigenstates of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg spin chain on a quantum computer has recently been found. We derive an exact formula for the success probability of this algorithm in terms of the Gaudin determinant, and we study its large-length limit. We demonstrate the feasibility of computing antiferromagnetic ground-state spin-spin correlation functions for short chains. However, the success probability decreases exponentially with the chain length, which precludes the computation of these correlation functions for chains of moderate length. Some conjectures for estimates of the Gaudin determinant are noted in an appendix.

Bethe ansatz on a quantum computer?

We consider the feasibility of studying the anisotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chain with the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm, by treating Bethe states as variational states, and Bethe roots as variational parameters. For short chains, we construct exact one-magnon trial states that are functions of the variational parameter, and implement the VQE calculations in Qiskit. However, exact multi-magnon trial states appear to be out out of reach.

Factorization identities and algebraic Bethe ansatz for $D^{(2)}_{2}$ models

We express $D^{(2)}_{2}$ transfer matrices as products of $A^{(1)}_{1}$ transfer matrices, for both closed and open spin chains. We use these relations, which we call factorization identities, to solve the models by algebraic Bethe ansatz. We also formulate and solve a new integrable XXZ-like open spin chain with an even number of sites that depends on a continuous parameter, which we interpret as the rapidity of the boundary.

Preparing exact eigenstates of the open XXZ chain on a quantum computer

The open spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain with diagonal boundary magnetic fields is the paradigmatic example of a quantum integrable model with open boundary conditions. We formulate a quantum algorithm for preparing Bethe states of this model, corresponding to real solutions of the Bethe equations. The algorithm is probabilistic, with a success probability that decreases with the number of down spins. For a Bethe state of $L$ spins with $M$ down spins, which contains a total of $\binom{L}{M}\, 2^{M}\, M!$ terms, the algorithm requires $L+M^2+2M$ qubits.

Cylinder partition function of the 6-vertex model from algebraic geometry

We compute the exact partition function of the isotropic 6-vertex model on a cylinder geometry with free boundary conditions, for lattices of intermediate size, using Bethe ansatz and algebraic geometry. We perform the computations in both the open and closed channels. We also consider the partial thermodynamic limits, whereby in the open (closed) channel, the open (closed) direction is kept small while the other direction becomes large. We compute the zeros of the partition function in the two partial thermodynamic limits, and compare with the condensation curves.

Completing the solution for the $OSp(1|2)$ spin chain

The periodic $OSp(1|2)$ quantum spin chain has both a graded and a non-graded version. Naively, the Bethe ansatz solution for the non-graded version does not account for the complete spectrum of the transfer matrix, and we propose a simple mechanism for achieving completeness. In contrast, for the graded version, this issue does not arise. We also clarify the symmetries of both versions of the model, and we show how these symmetries are manifested in the degeneracies and multiplicities of the transfer-matrix spectrum. While the graded version has $OSp(1|2)$ symmetry, the non-graded version has only $SU(2)$ symmetry. Moreover, we obtain conditions for selecting the physical singular solutions of the Bethe equations. This analysis solves a lasting controversy over signs in the Bethe equations.

Towards the solution of an integrable $D_2^{(2)}$ spin chain

Two branches of integrable open quantum-group invariant $D_{n+1}^{(2)}$ quantum spin chains are known. For one branch (epsilon=0), a complete Bethe ansatz solution has been proposed. However, the other branch (epsilon=1) has so far resisted solution. In an effort to address this problem, we consider here the simplest case n=1. We propose a Bethe ansatz solution, which however is not complete, as it describes only the transfer-matrix eigenvalues with odd degeneracy. We also consider a proposal for the missing eigenvalues.

Universal Bethe ansatz solution for the Temperley-Lieb spin chain

We consider the Temperley-Lieb (TL) open quantum spin chain with "free" boundary conditions associated with the spin-$s$ representation of quantum-deformed $sl(2)$. We construct the transfer matrix, and determine its eigenvalues and the corresponding Bethe equations using analytical Bethe ansatz. We show that the transfer matrix has quantum group symmetry, and we propose explicit formulas for the number of solutions of the Bethe equations and the degeneracies of the transfer-matrix eigenvalues. We propose an algebraic Bethe ansatz construction of the off-shell Bethe states, and we conjecture that the on-shell Bethe states are highest-weight states of the quantum group. We also propose a determinant formula for the scalar product between an off-shell Bethe state and its on-shell dual, as well as for the square of the norm. We find that all of these results, except for the degeneracies and a constant factor in the scalar product, are universal in the sense that they do not depend on the value of the spin. In an appendix, we briefly consider the closed TL spin chain with periodic boundary conditions, and show how a previously-proposed solution can be improved so as to obtain the complete (albeit non-universal) spectrum.

Wrapping corrections for non-diagonal boundaries in AdS/CFT

We consider an open string stretched between a Y=0 brane and a Y_theta=0 brane. The latter brane is rotated with respect to the former by an angle theta, and is described by a non-diagonal boundary S-matrix. This system interpolates smoothly between the Y-Y (theta =0) and the Y-bar Y (theta = pi/2) systems, which are described by diagonal boundary S-matrices. We use integrability to compute the energies of one-particle states at weak coupling up to leading wrapping order (4, 6 loops) as a function of the angle. The results for the diagonal cases exactly match with those obtained previously.

Boundary energy of the open XXX chain with a non-diagonal boundary term

We analyze the ground state of the open spin-1/2 isotropic quantum spin chain with a non-diagonal boundary term using a recently proposed Bethe ansatz solution. As the coefficient of the non-diagonal boundary term tends to zero, the Bethe roots split evenly into two sets: those that remain finite, and those that become infinite. We argue that the former satisfy conventional Bethe equations, while the latter satisfy a generalization of the Richardson-Gaudin equations. We derive an expression for the leading correction to the boundary energy in terms of the boundary parameters.

Singular solutions, repeated roots and completeness for higher-spin chains

We investigate the completeness of the solutions of the Bethe equations for the integrable spin-s isotropic (XXX) spin chain with periodic boundary conditions. Solutions containing the exact string i s, i (s-1), ..., -i(s-1), -is are singular. For s>1/2, there exist also "strange" solutions with repeated roots, which nevertheless are physical (i.e., correspond to eigenstates of the Hamiltonian). We derive conditions for the singular solutions and the solutions with repeated roots to be physical. We formulate a conjecture for the number of solutions with pairwise distinct roots in terms of the numbers of singular and strange solutions. Using homotopy continuation, we solve the Bethe equations numerically for s=1 and s=3/2 up to 8 sites, and find some support for the conjecture. We also exhibit several examples of strange solutions.

The spectrum of tachyons in AdS/CFT

We analyze the spectrum of open strings stretched between a D-brane and an anti-D-brane in planar AdS/CFT using various tools. We focus on open strings ending on two giant gravitons with different orientation in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ and study the spectrum of string excitations using the following approaches: open spin-chain, boundary asymptotic Bethe ansatz and boundary thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (BTBA). We find agreement between a perturbative high order diagrammatic calculation in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and the leading finite-size boundary Luscher correction. We study the ground state energy of the system at finite coupling by deriving and numerically solving a set of BTBA equations. While the numerics give reasonable results at small coupling, they break down at finite coupling when the total energy of the string gets close to zero, possibly indicating that the state turns tachyonic. The location of the breakdown is also predicted analytically.

Algebraic Bethe ansatz for singular solutions

The Bethe equations for the isotropic periodic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with N sites have solutions containing i/2, -i/2 that are singular: both the corresponding energy and the algebraic Bethe ansatz vector are divergent. Such solutions must be carefully regularized. We consider a regularization involving a parameter that can be determined using a generalization of the Bethe equations. These generalized Bethe equations provide a practical way of determining which singular solutions correspond to eigenvectors of the model.

Inhomogeneous T-Q equation for the open XXX chain with general boundary terms: completeness and arbitrary spin

An inhomogeneous T-Q equation has recently been proposed by Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang for the open spin-1/2 XXX chain with general (nondiagonal) boundary terms. We argue that a simplified version of this equation describes all the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix of this model. We also propose a generating function for the inhomogeneous T-Q equations of arbitrary spin.

preprint2013arXiv

On the completeness of solutions of Bethe's equations

We consider the Bethe equations for the isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg quantum spin chain with periodic boundary conditions. We formulate a conjecture for the number of solutions with pairwise distinct roots of these equations, in terms of numbers of so-called singular (or exceptional) solutions. Using homotopy continuation methods, we find all such solutions of the Bethe equations for chains of length up to 14. The numbers of these solutions are in perfect agreement with the conjecture. We also discuss an indirect method of finding solutions of the Bethe equations by solving the Baxter T-Q equation. We briefly comment on implications for thermodynamical computations based on the string hypothesis.

Y-system for Y=0 brane in planar AdS/CFT

The spectrum of open strings with integrable Y=0 brane boundary conditions is analyzed in planar AdS/CFT. We give evidence that it can be described by the same Y-system that governs the spectrum of closed strings in AdS_5xS^5, except with different asymptotic and analytical properties. We determine the asymptotic solution of the Y-system that is consistent both with boundary asymptotic Bethe ansatz and boundary Luscher corrections.

Review of AdS/CFT Integrability, Chapter III.2: Exact world-sheet S-matrix

We review the derivation of the S-matrix for planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and type IIB superstring theory on an AdS5xS5 background. After deriving the S-matrix for the su(2) and su(3) sectors at the one-loop level based on coordinate Bethe ansatz, we show how su(2|2) symmetry leads to the exact asymptotic S-matrix up to an overall scalar function. We then briefly review the spectrum of bound states by relating these states to simple poles of the S-matrix. Finally, we review the derivation of the asymptotic Bethe equations, which can be used to determine the asymptotic multiparticle spectrum.

Revisiting the Y=0 open spin chain at one loop

In 2005, Berenstein and Vazquez determined an open spin chain Hamiltonian describing the one-loop anomalous dimensions of determinant-like operators corresponding to open strings attached to Y=0 maximal giant gravitons. We construct the transfer matrix (generating functional of conserved quantities) containing this Hamiltonian, thereby directly proving its integrability. We find the eigenvalues of this transfer matrix and the corresponding Bethe equations, which we compare with proposed all-loop Bethe equations. We note that the Bethe ansatz solution has a certain "gauge" freedom, and is not completely unique.

TBA, NLO Luscher correction, and double wrapping in twisted AdS/CFT

The ground-state energy of integrably-twisted theories is analyzed in finite volume. We derive the leading and next-to-leading order (NLO) Lüscher-type corrections for large volumes of the vacuum energy for integrable theories with twisted boundary conditions and twisted S-matrix. We then derive the twisted thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations to describe exactly the ground state, from which we obtain an untwisted Y-system. The two approaches are compared by expanding the TBA equations to NLO, and exact agreement is found. We give explicit results for the O(4) model and for the three-parameter family of $γ$-deformed (non-supersymmetric) planar AdS/CFT model, where the ground-state energy can be nontrivial and can acquire finite-size corrections. The NLO corrections, which correspond to double-wrapping diagrams, are explicitly evaluated for the latter model at six loops.

Finite-size effect for four-loop Konishi of the beta-deformed N=4 SYM

We propose that certain twists of the su(2|2) S-matrix elements describe the beta-deformation of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We compute the perturbative four-loop anomalous dimension of the Konishi operator of the deformed gauge theory from the Luscher formula based on these twisted S-matrix elements. The result agrees exactly with the perturbative gauge theory computations.

Nested algebraic Bethe ansatz for open GL(N) spin chains with projected K-matrices

We consider an open spin chain model with GL(N) bulk symmetry that is broken to GL(M) x GL(N-M) by the boundary, which is a generalization of a model arising in string/gauge theory. We prove the integrability of this model by constructing the corresponding commuting transfer matrix. This construction uses operator-valued "projected" K-matrices. We solve this model for general values of N and M using the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz approach, despite the fact that the K-matrices are not diagonal. The key to obtaining this solution is an identity based on a certain factorization property of the reduced K-matrices into products of R-matrices. Numerical evidence suggests that the solution is complete.

An alternative S-matrix for N=6 Chern-Simons theory ?

We have recently proposed an S-matrix for the planar limit of the N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory of Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena which leads to the all-loop Bethe ansatz equations conjectured by Gromov and Vieira. An unusual feature of this proposal is that the scattering of A and B particles is reflectionless. We consider here an alternative S-matrix, for which A-B scattering is not reflectionless. We argue that this S-matrix does not lead to the Bethe ansatz equations which are consistent with perturbative computations.

N=6 super Chern-Simons theory S-matrix and all-loop Bethe ansatz equations

We propose the exact S-matrix for the planar limit of the N=6 super Chern-Simons theory recently proposed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis, and Maldacena for the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence. Assuming SU(2|2) symmetry, factorizability and certain crossing-unitarity relations, we find the S-matrix including the dressing phase. We use this S-matrix to formulate the asymptotic Bethe ansatz. Our result for the Bethe-Yang equations and corresponding Bethe ansatz equations confirms the all-loop Bethe ansatz equations recently conjectured by Gromov and Vieira.

Q-operator and T-Q relation from the fusion hierarchy

We propose that the Baxter $Q$-operator for the spin-1/2 XXZ quantum spin chain is given by the $j\to \infty$ limit of the transfer matrix with spin-$j$ (i.e., $(2j+1)$-dimensional) auxiliary space. Applying this observation to the open chain with general (nondiagonal) integrable boundary terms, we obtain from the fusion hierarchy the $T$-$Q$ relation for {\it generic} values (i.e. not roots of unity) of the bulk anisotropy parameter. We use this relation to determine the Bethe Ansatz solution of the eigenvalues of the fundamental transfer matrix. This approach is complementary to the one used recently to solve the same model for the roots of unity case.

NLIE for hole excited states in the sine-Gordon model with two boundaries

We derive a nonlinear integral equation (NLIE) for some bulk excited states of the sine-Gordon model on a finite interval with general integrable boundary interactions, including boundary terms proportional to the first time derivative of the field. We use this NLIE to compute numerically the dimensions of these states as a function of scale, and check the UV and IR limits analytically. We also find further support for the ground-state NLIE by comparison with boundary conformal perturbation theory (BCPT), boundary truncated conformal space approach (BTCSA) and the boundary analogue of the Luscher formula.

Finite size effects in the XXZ and sine-Gordon models with two boundaries

We compute the boundary energy and the Casimir energy for both the spin-1/2 XXZ quantum spin chain and (by means of the light-cone lattice construction) the massive sine-Gordon model with both left and right boundaries. We also derive a nonlinear integral equation for the ground state of the sine-Gordon model on a finite interval. These results, which are based on a recently-proposed Bethe Ansatz solution, are for general values of the bulk coupling constant, and for both diagonal and nondiagonal boundary interactions. However, the boundary parameters are restricted to obey one complex (two real) constraints.

Supersymmetry in the boundary tricritical Ising field theory

We argue that it is possible to maintain both supersymmetry and integrability in the boundary tricritical Ising field theory. Indeed, we find two sets of boundary conditions and corresponding boundary perturbations which are both supersymmetric and integrable. The first set corresponds to a ``direct sum'' of two non-supersymmetric theories studied earlier by Chim. The second set corresponds to a one-parameter deformation of another theory studied by Chim. For both cases, the conserved supersymmetry charges are linear combinations of Q, \bar Q and the spin-reversal operator Γ.

Exact S matrices for integrable quantum spin chains

We begin with a review of the antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain. In particular, we show that the model has particle-like excitations with spin 1/2, and we compute the exact bulk S matrix. We then review our recent work which generalizes these results. We first consider an integrable alternating spin 1/2 - spin 1 chain. In addition to having excitations with spin 1/2, this model also has excitations with spin 0. We compute the bulk S matrix, which has some unusual features. We then consider the open antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain with boundary magnetic fields. We give a direct calculation of the boundary S matrix. Scalar Kinks

We determine the excitations and $S$ matrix of an integrable isotropic antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain of alternating spin 1/2 and spin 1. There are two types of gapless one-particle excitations: the usual spin 1/2 (``spinor'') kink, and a new spin 0 (``scalar'') kink. Remarkably, the scalar-spinor scattering is nontrivial, yet the spinor-spinor scattering is the same as if the scalar kinks were absent. Moreover, there is no scalar-scalar scattering.

Spectrum of transfer matrix for $U_q(B_n)$-invariant $A^{(2)}_{2n}$ open spin chain

We propose an expression for the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix for the $U_q(B_n)$-invariant open quantum spin chain associated with the fundamental representation of $A^{(2)}_{2n}$. By assumption, the Bethe Ansatz equations are ``doubled'' with respect to those of the corresponding closed chain with periodic boundary conditions. We verify that the transfer matrix eigenvalues have the correct analyticity properties and asymptotic behavior. We also briefly discuss the structure of the eigenstates of the transfer matrix.

Analytical Bethe Ansatz for Quantum-Algebra-Invariant Spin Chains

We have recently constructed a large class of open quantum spin chains which have quantum-algebra symmetry and which are integrable. We show here that these models can be exactly solved using a generalization of the analytical Bethe Ansatz (BA) method. In particular, we determine in this way the spectrum of the transfer matrices of the $U_q [(su(2)]$-invariant spin chains associated with $A^{(1)}_1$ and $A^{(2)}_2$ in the fundamental representation. The quantum-algebra invariance of these models plays an essential role in obtaining these results. The BA equations for these open chains are ``doubled'' with respect to the BA equations for the corresponding closed chains.
