Percolation on Lieb lattices

We study site- and bond-percolation on a class of lattices referred to as Lieb lattices. In two dimensions the Lieb lattice (LL) is also known as the decorated square lattice, or as the CuO$_2$ lattice; in three dimensions it can be generalized to a layered Lieb lattice (LLL) or to a perovskite lattice (PL). Emergent electronic phenomena, such as topological states and ferrimagnetism, have been predicted to occur in these systems, which may be realized in optical lattices as well as in solid state. Since the study of the interplay between quantum fluctuations and disorder in these systems requires the availability of accurate estimates of geometrical critical parameters, such as percolation thresholds and correlation length exponents, here we use Monte Carlo simulations to obtain these data for Lieb lattices when a site (or bond) is present with probability $p$. We have found that the thresholds satisfy a mean-field (Bethe lattice) trend, namely that the critical concentration, $p_c$, increases as the average coordination number decreases; our estimates for the correlation length exponent are in line with the expectation that there is no change in the universality class.

Dynamical resilience to disorder: the dilute Hubbard model on the Lieb lattice

In itinerant systems, electron-electron interactions may lead to the formation of local magnetic moments and their effective exchange coupling, which in turn gives rise to long-range magnetic order. Therefore, when moment formation is weakened, such as in the single-band Hubbard model on a square lattice with the on-site repulsion being randomly switched off on a fraction $x$ of sites, magnetic order is suppressed beyond some critical $x_c$, which was found to lie below the classical percolation threshold, $x_c^\text{(perc,sq)}$. Here we study dilute magnetism in flat band systems, namely in the Hubbard model on a `Lieb' lattice. Interestingly, we show that magnetic order persists to $x$ almost twice as large as the classical percolation threshold for the lattice, thus emphasizing the central role of electron itinerancy to the magnetic response. The analysis of the orbital-resolved order parameters reveals that the contribution of the four-fold coordinated `d' sites to magnetism is dramatically affected by dilution, while the localized `p' states of the flat band provide the dominant contribution to long-range correlations. We also examine the transport properties, which suggest the existence of an insulator-to-metal transition in the same range of the critical magnetic dilution.

Evolution of the magnetism of Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C

The magnetic properties of polycrystalline Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C (x=0.2,0.4,0.6,0.8) samples were probed by magnetization, specific heat, ac susceptibility, and resistivity techniques. For x{\neq}0.4, the obtained curves are consistent with the features expected for the corresponding magnetic modes, namely k_{1}=(0.55,0,0) at x=0; k_{2}=([nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{2}</LaTeX>,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{2}) at x= 0.2; k_{3}=(0,0,[nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{3}) at x= 0.6, and k_{4}=(0,0,0) at x= 0.8 and 1. For x=0.4, even though the neutron diffraction indicates a k_{2} mode, but with a reduced magnetic moment, the magnetization, the ac susceptibility, and resistivity indicate two magnetic events; furthermore, deviation from Curie-Weiss behavior is observed below 150 K for this sample. These features, together with the evolution of both magnetic moment and critical temperature, are attributed to an interplay between competing magnetic couplings; for the particular x=0.4 case, additional factors such as crystalline electric field effects may be in operation.

Tuning in magnetic modes in Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C: from longitudinal spin-density waves to simple ferromagnetism

Neutron diffraction and thermodynamics techniques were used to probe the evolution of the magnetic properties of Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C. A succession of magnetic modes was observed as x is varied: the longitudinal modulated k=(0.55,0,0) state at x=0 is transformed into a collinear k=([nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{2}</LaTeX>,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{2}</LaTeX>) antiferromagnetic state at x= 0.2, 0.4; then into a transverse c-axis modulated k=(0,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{3}</LaTeX>) mode at x= 0.6, and finally into a simple ferromagnetic structure at x= 0.8 and 1. Concomitantly, the low-temperature orthorhombic distortion of the tetragonal unit cell at x=0 is reduced smoothly such that for x >= 0.4 only a tetragonal unit cell is manifested. Though predicted theoretically earlier, this is the first observation of the k=(0,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{3}</LaTeX>) mode in borocarbides; our findings of a succession of magnetic modes upon increasing x also find support from a recently proposed theoretical model. The implication of these findings and their interpretation on the magnetic structure of the RM_{2}B_{2}C series are also discussed.

Finite-size scaling behavior in trapped systems

Numerical transfer-matrix methods are applied to two-dimensional Ising spin systems, in presence of a confining magnetic field which varies with distance $|{\vec x}|$ to a "trap center", proportionally to $(|{\vec x}|/\ell)^p$, $p>0$. On a strip geometry, the competition between the "trap size" $\ell$ and the strip width, $L$, is analysed in the context of a generalized finite-size scaling {\em ansatz}. In the low-field regime $\ell \gg L$, we use conformal-invariance concepts in conjunction with a linear-response approach to derive the appropriate ($p$-dependent) limit of the theory, which agrees very well with numerical results for magnetization profiles. For high fields $\ell \lesssim L$, correlation-length scaling data broadly confirms an existing picture of $p$-dependent characteristic exponents. Standard spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising systems are considered, as well as the Blume-Capel model.

Suppression of Anderson localization of light and Brewster anomalies in disordered superlattices containing a dispersive metamaterial

Light propagation through 1D disordered structures composed of alternating layers, with random thicknesses, of air and a dispersive metamaterial is theoretically investigated. Both normal and oblique incidences are considered. By means of numerical simulations and an analytical theory, we have established that Anderson localization of light may be suppressed: (i) in the long wavelength limit, for a finite angle of incidence which depends on the parameters of the dispersive metamaterial; (ii) for isolated frequencies and for specific angles of incidence, corresponding to Brewster anomalies in both positive- and negative-refraction regimes of the dispersive metamaterial. These results suggest that Anderson localization of light could be explored to control and tune light propagation in disordered metamaterials.

Kondo--attractive-Hubbard model for the ordering of local magnetic moments in superconductors

We consider local magnetic moments coupled to conduction electrons with on-site attraction, in order to discuss the interplay between pairing and magnetic order. We probe the ground state properties of this model on a one-dimensional lattice through pair binding energies and several correlation functions, calculated by means of density-matrix renormalization group. A phase diagram is obtained (for fixed electron density 1/3), from which we infer that coexistence between magnetic order and superconductivity is robust, at the expense of a continuous distortion of the magnetic arrangement of the local moments, as evidenced by a strong dependence of the characteristic wave vector k* with the coupling constants. This allows us to understand some trends of the coexistence, such as the influence of the rare earth on k*, as observed experimentally in the borocarbides.
