Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo Study of d-wave pairing in the Plaquette Hubbard Hamiltonian

Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) is used to determine the pairing and magnetic response for a Hubbard model built up from four-site clusters -a two-dimensional square lattice consisting of elemental 2x2 plaquettes with hopping $t$ and on-site repulsion $U$ coupled by an inter-plaquette hopping $t' \leq t$. Superconductivity in this geometry has previously been studied by a variety of analytic and numeric methods, with differing conclusions concerning whether the pairing correlations and transition temperature are raised near half-filling by the inhomogeneous hopping or not. For $U/t=4$, DQMC indicates an optimal $t'/t \approx 0.4$ at which the pairing vertex is most attractive. The optimal $t'/t$ increases with $U/t$. We then contrast our results for this plaquette model with a Hamiltonian which instead involves a regular pattern of site energies whose large site energy limit is the three band CuO$_2$ model; we show that there the inhomogeneity rapidly, and monotonically, suppresses pairing.

Magnetic and metal-insulator transitions in coupled spin-fermion systems

We use quantum Monte Carlo to determine the magnetic and transport properties of coupled square lattice spin and fermionic planes as a model for a metal-insulator interface. Specifically, layers of Ising spins with an intra-layer exchange constant $J$ interact with the electronic spins of several adjoining metallic sheets via a coupling $J_H$. When the chemical potential cuts across the band center, that is, at half-filling, the Néel temperature of antiferromagnetic ($J>0$) Ising spins is enhanced by the coupling to the metal, while in the ferromagnetic case ($J<0$) the metallic degrees of freedom reduce the ordering temperature. In the former case, a gap opens in the fermionic spectrum, driving insulating behavior, and the electron spins also order. This induced antiferromagnetism penetrates more weakly as the distance from the interface increases, and also exhibits a non-monotonic dependence on $J_H$. For doped lattices an interesting charge disproportionation occurs where electrons move to the interface layer to maintain half-filling there.

Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo Study of the Enhancement of d-wave Pairing by Charge Inhomogeneity

Striped phases, in which spin, charge, and pairing correlations vary inhomogeneously in the CuO_2 planes, are a known experimental feature of cuprate superconductors, and are also found in a variety of numerical treatments of the two dimensional Hubbard Hamiltonian. In this paper we use determinant Quantum Monte Carlo to show that if a stripe density pattern is imposed on the model, the d-wave pairing vertex is significantly enhanced. We attribute this enhancement to an increase in antiferromagnetic order which is caused by the appearence of more nearly half-filled regions when the doped holes are confined to the stripes. We also observe a π-phase shift in the magnetic order.

Evolution of the magnetism of Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C

The magnetic properties of polycrystalline Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C (x=0.2,0.4,0.6,0.8) samples were probed by magnetization, specific heat, ac susceptibility, and resistivity techniques. For x{\neq}0.4, the obtained curves are consistent with the features expected for the corresponding magnetic modes, namely k_{1}=(0.55,0,0) at x=0; k_{2}=([nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{2}</LaTeX>,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{2}) at x= 0.2; k_{3}=(0,0,[nicefrac]\nicefrac{1}{3}) at x= 0.6, and k_{4}=(0,0,0) at x= 0.8 and 1. For x=0.4, even though the neutron diffraction indicates a k_{2} mode, but with a reduced magnetic moment, the magnetization, the ac susceptibility, and resistivity indicate two magnetic events; furthermore, deviation from Curie-Weiss behavior is observed below 150 K for this sample. These features, together with the evolution of both magnetic moment and critical temperature, are attributed to an interplay between competing magnetic couplings; for the particular x=0.4 case, additional factors such as crystalline electric field effects may be in operation.

Tuning in magnetic modes in Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C: from longitudinal spin-density waves to simple ferromagnetism

Neutron diffraction and thermodynamics techniques were used to probe the evolution of the magnetic properties of Tb(Co_{x}Ni_{1-x})_{2}B_{2}C. A succession of magnetic modes was observed as x is varied: the longitudinal modulated k=(0.55,0,0) state at x=0 is transformed into a collinear k=([nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{2}</LaTeX>,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{2}</LaTeX>) antiferromagnetic state at x= 0.2, 0.4; then into a transverse c-axis modulated k=(0,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{3}</LaTeX>) mode at x= 0.6, and finally into a simple ferromagnetic structure at x= 0.8 and 1. Concomitantly, the low-temperature orthorhombic distortion of the tetragonal unit cell at x=0 is reduced smoothly such that for x >= 0.4 only a tetragonal unit cell is manifested. Though predicted theoretically earlier, this is the first observation of the k=(0,0,[nicefrac]<LaTeX>\nicefrac{1}{3}</LaTeX>) mode in borocarbides; our findings of a succession of magnetic modes upon increasing x also find support from a recently proposed theoretical model. The implication of these findings and their interpretation on the magnetic structure of the RM_{2}B_{2}C series are also discussed.

Universal probes for antiferromagnetic correlations and entropy in cold fermions on optical lattices

We determine antiferromagnetic (AF) signatures in the half-filled Hubbard model at strong coupling on a cubic lattice and in lower dimensions. Upon cooling, the transition from the charge-excitation regime to the AF Heisenberg regime is signaled by a universal minimum of the double occupancy at entropy s=S/(N k_B)=s*=ln(2) per particle and a linear increase of the next-nearest neighbor (NNN) spin correlation function for s<s*. This crossover, driven by a gain in kinetic exchange energy, appears as the essential AF physics relevant for current cold-atom experiments. The onset of long-range AF order (at low s on cubic lattices) is hardly visible in nearest-neighbor spin correlations versus s, but could be detected in spin correlations at or beyond NNN distances.

Double occupancy as a universal probe for antiferromagnetic correlations and entropy in cold fermions on optical lattices

We verify signatures of antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in the double occupancy D [Gorelik et al., PRL 105, 065301 (2010)] and study their dimensional dependence using direct quantum Monte Carlo in dimensions d=2,3 and Bethe Ansatz in d=1. We find quantitative agreement with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in the cubic case and qualitative agreement down to d=1. As a function of entropy s=S/(N k_B), D is nearly universal with respect to d; the minimum in D(s) approaches s=log(2) at strong coupling, as predicted by DMFT. Long-range order appears hardly relevant for the current search of AF signatures in cold fermions. Thus, experimentalists need not achieve s<log(2)/2 and should consider lower dimensions, for which the AF effects are larger.

Kondo--attractive-Hubbard model for the ordering of local magnetic moments in superconductors

We consider local magnetic moments coupled to conduction electrons with on-site attraction, in order to discuss the interplay between pairing and magnetic order. We probe the ground state properties of this model on a one-dimensional lattice through pair binding energies and several correlation functions, calculated by means of density-matrix renormalization group. A phase diagram is obtained (for fixed electron density 1/3), from which we infer that coexistence between magnetic order and superconductivity is robust, at the expense of a continuous distortion of the magnetic arrangement of the local moments, as evidenced by a strong dependence of the characteristic wave vector k* with the coupling constants. This allows us to understand some trends of the coexistence, such as the influence of the rare earth on k*, as observed experimentally in the borocarbides.
