Double-domed temperature-pressure phase diagram found for CePd3S4

CePd3S4 exhibits interplay between ferromagnetism (FM), quadrupolar order, and the Kondo effect at low temperatures with a FM transition temperature that is much higher than the value expected from the de Gennes scaling of the heavier RPd3S4 compounds. In this work, we investigated the electrical transport and magnetic properties of CePd3S4 under pressure up through 12 GPa so as to better understand the interplay between electronic and magnetic phases in this material. Our findings show that the low pressure FM state is suddenly replaced by a new magnetically ordered phase that is most likely antiferromagnetic that spans from ~ 7 GPa to ~ 11 GPa. Whereas this could be described as an example of avoided quantum criticality, given that clear changes in resistance and Hall data are detected near 6.3 GPa for all temperatures below 300 K, it is also possible that the change in ground state is a response to a pressure induced change in structure. The lack of any discernible change in the pressure dependence of the room temperature unit cell parameter/volume across this whole pressure range suggests that this change in structure is either more subtle than could be detected by our measurements (i.e. development of weak, new wave vector) or the transition is electronic (such as a Lifshitz transition).

Strong enhancement of magnetic ordering temperature and structural/valence transitions in EuPd3S4 under high pressure

We present a comprehensive study of the mixed valent compound, EuPd3S4, by electrical transport, X-ray diffraction, time-domain 151Eu synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements under high pressure. The electrical transport measurements show that the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, TN, increases rapidly from 2.8 K at ambient pressure to 23.5 K at ~19 GPa and plateaus between ~19 and ~29 GPa after which no anomaly associated with TN is detected. A pressure-induced first order structural transition from cubic to tetragonal is observed, with a rather broad coexistence region (~20 GPa to ~32 GPa) that corresponds to the TN plateau. Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements show a clear valence transition from approximately 50:50 Eu2+:Eu3+ to fully Eu3+ at ~28 GPa, consistent with the vanishing of the magnetic order at the same pressure. X-ray absorption data show a transition to a fully trivalent state at a similar pressure. Our results show that pressure first greatly enhances TN, most likely via enhanced hybridization between the Eu 4f states and the conduction band, and then, second, causes a structural phase transition that coincides with the conversion of the europium to a fully trivalent state.

Effects of external pressure on the narrow gap semiconductor Ce$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$

Here we report the magnetic and electronic properties of recently discovered Ce$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$. At ambient pressure, Ce$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$ presents a semiconducting behavior with an activation gap of 74(1)~meV. At 136~K, a sudden increase of the electrical resistivity and a peak in specific heat are consistent with a charge density wave transition. At low temperatures, antiferromagnetic order of the Ce$^{3+}$ ions occurs below $T_{\rm N} = 4.0$~K with a magnetic hard axis along the $c$-axis and a $Γ_{6} = |\pm1/2\rangle$ doublet ground state. The application of external pressure strongly suppresses the charge density wave order, which is completely suppressed above 0.8(1)~GPa, and induces a metallic ground state. No evidence for superconductivity is detected above 2~K. Conversely, the antiferromagnetic state is favored by pressure, reaching a transition temperature of 5.3~K at 3.8(1)~GPa. Notably, the resistivity anomaly characterizing the antiferromagnetic order changes with increasing pressure, indicating that two different magnetic phases might be present in Ce$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$ under pressure. This change in ordering appears to be associated to the crossing of the $T_{\rm CDW}$ and $T_{\rm N}$ lines.

Complex magnetic order in YbMn$_2$Sb$_2$ single crystals observed by $μ$SR

The crystal growth and the structural, transport and magnetic properties of the magnetically frustrated YbMn$_2$Sb$_2$ single crystals are reported. The crystals show a trigonal symmetry (space group $P\bar{3}m1$), where corrugated honeycomb layers of MnSb are separated by Yb atoms. No structural phase transition was observed down to 22~K. The resistivity measurements show a predominantly insulating behavior. The combined resistivity, dc susceptibility and heat capacity measurements confirm successive transitions at 230~K, 116~K and 27~K, being the transition at $T_N$=116~K due to the Mn$^{+2}$ lattice antiferromagnetic ordering. Muon spin rotation experiments ($μ$SR) reveal a more complicated scenario, with temperature dependence of the magnetic volume fraction reflecting short range and long range magnetic order, and a strongly disordered magnetic ground state. The role of spin-lattice coupling and its relationship with exchange interactions between Mn moments are discussed as possible cause of the complex magnetic behavior observed.

Impact of Nematicity on the Relationship between Antiferromagnetic Fluctuations and Superconductivity in FeSe0.91S0.09 Under Pressure

The sulfur substituted FeSe system, FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$, provides a versatile platform for studying the relationship between nematicity, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity. Here, by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resistivity measurements up to 4.73 GPa on FeSe$_{0.91}$S$_{0.09}$, we established the pressure($p$)-temperature($T$) phase diagram in which the nematic state is suppressed with pressure showing a nematic quantum phase transition (QPT) around $p$ = 0.5 GPa, two SC regions, separated by the QPT, appear and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase emerges above $\sim$3.3 GPa. From the NMR results up to 2.1 GPa, AFM fluctuations are revealed to be characterized by the stripe-type wavevector which remains the same for the two SC regions. Furthermore, the electronic state is found to change in character from non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid around the nematic QPT and persists up to $\sim$ 2.1 GPa. In addition, although the AFM fluctuations correlate with $T_{\rm c}$ in both SC states, demonstrating the importance of the AFM fluctuations for the appearance of SC in the system, we found that, when nematic order is absent, $T_{\rm c}$ is strongly correlated with the AFM fluctuations, whereas $T_{\rm c}$ weakly depends on the AFM fluctuations when nematic order is present. Our findings on FeSe$_{0.91}$S$_{0.09}$ were shown to be applied to the whole FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ system and also provide a new insight into the relationship between AFM fluctuations and SC in Fe-based superconductors.

Emergence of competing magnetic interactions induced by Ge doping in the semiconductor FeGa3

FeGa$_3$ is an unusual intermetallic semiconductor that presents intriguing magnetic responses to the tuning of its electronic properties. When doped with Ge, the system evolves from diamagnetic to paramagnetic to ferromagnetic ground states that are not well understood. In this work, we have performed a joint theoretical and experimental study of FeGa$_{3-x}$Ge$_x$ using Density Functional Theory and magnetic susceptibility measurements. For low Ge concentrations we observe the formation of localized moments on some Fe atoms and, as the dopant concentration increases, a more delocalized magnetic behavior emerges. The magnetic configuration strongly depends on the dopant distribution, leading even to the appearance of antiferromagnetic interactions in certain configurations.

Magnetic properties of Gd$T_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Co) investigated by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy

We investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of the Gd$T_2$Zn$_{20}$ ($T$ = Fe and Co) compounds using X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques. The XRMS measurements reveal that the GdCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ compound has a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin structure with a magnetic propagation vector $\vecτ$ = $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ below the Néel temperature ($T_N \sim$ 5.7 K). Only the Gd ions carry a magnetic moment forming an antiferromagnetic structure with magnetic representation $Γ_6$. For the ferromagnetic GdFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ compound, an extensive investigation was performed at low temperature and under magnetic field using XANES and XMCD techniques. A strong XMCD signal of about 12.5 $\%$ and 9.7 $\%$ is observed below the Curie temperature ($T_C \sim$ 85 K) at the Gd-$L_2$ and $L_3$ edges, respectively. In addition, a small magnetic signal of about 0.06 $\%$ of the jump is recorded at the Zn $K$-edge suggesting that the Zn 4$p$ states are spin polarized by the Gd 5$d$ extended orbitals.

Crystal Chemistry of Carbon-Substituted MgB2

Neutron powder diffraction has been used to characterize a sample of C-substituted MgB2 synthesized from Mg and B4C (with isotopically enriched 11B). The sample is multiphase, with the major phase [73.4(1) wt.%] being Mg(B1-xCx)2 with x=0.10(2). Minor phases include MgB2C2, Mg, and MgO. The major Mg(B1-xCx)2 phase displays diffraction peak widths as sharp as for pure MgB2, indicating good C homogeneity. There is no evidence for ordering of the substituted C atoms or distortion of the host structure other than contraction of the a axis and slight expansion of the c axis. The observed changes in lattice parameters vs. C concentration provide a means for estimating the C concentration in other Mg(B1-xCx)2 samples. The reduction in Tc resulting from 10% C substitution is much larger than previously reported, suggesting that previous reports of the C concentration in Mg(B1-xCx)2 are overestimated. The Mg site occupancy is determined to be 0.990(4) which is consistent with full Mg occupancy. Given these results, the stoichiometry Mg(B0.9C0.1)2 should be used by future attempts (band structural or otherwise) to explain (i) the dramatic suppression of Tc (Tc ~ = 22 K) and (ii) the persistence of the two-superconducting-gap feature in the specific heat data.

Magnetic Field Induced Density of States in Superconducting MgB$_{2}$: Measurement of Conduction Electron Spin-Susceptibility

The magnetic field dependence of the spin-susceptibility, $χ_{s}$ was measured in the superconducting state of high purity MgB$_{2}$ fine powders below 1.3 T. $χ_{s}$ was determined from the intensity of the conduction electron spin resonance spectra at 3.8, 9.4, and 35 GHz. At the lowest magnetic fields (0.14 T), a gap opens in the density of states at the Fermi energy and, accordingly, $χ_{s}(T)$ is small at low temperatures. Fields above 0.2 T (about 15 % of $H^{c}_{c2}$, the minimum upper critical field), destroy the gap. The field induced $χ_{s}$ is much larger than expected from current superconductor models of MgB$_{2}$.
