Itinerant G-type antiferromagnet SrCr2As2 studied by magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and NMR measurements

The physical properties of itinerant antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrCr2_2As2_2 with body-centered tetragonal ThCr2_2Si2_2 structure were investigated in single crystalline and polycrystalline forms by electrical resistivity ρρ, heat capacity CpC_{\rm p}, magnetic susceptibility χχ versus temperature~TT and magnetization MM versus applied magnetic field HH isotherm measurements as well as 75^{75}As and 53^{53}Cr nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the wide temperature range TT = 1.6--900 K. From the χ(T)χ(T) and 75^{75}As NMR measurements, the G-type AFM state below TNT_{\rm N} = 615(15) K has been determined, consistent with the previous neutron-diffraction measurements. Direct evidence of magnetic ordering of the Cr spins was shown by the observation of the 53^{53}Cr NMR spectrum under HH = 0. From the χ(T)χ(T) measurements on single-crystal SrCr2_2As2_2 under the two different magnetic field directions H∣∣abH||ab and H∣∣cH||c in the AFM state, the Cr ordered moments are shown to align along the cc axis in the G-type AFM state. The metallic state is directly evidenced by the ρρ, CpC_{\rm p}, and NMR measurements, and the density of states at the Fermi energy D(EF){\cal D}(E_{\rm F}) in the AFM state is estimated to be 7.53 states/eV f.u. for both spin directions which is almost twice the bare D(EF){\cal D}(E_{\rm F}) estimated from first-principles calculations, suggesting an enhancement of the conduction-carrier mass by a factor of two in the AFM state. The D(EF){\cal D}(E_{\rm F}) is found to be nearly constant below at least 100 K and is independent of HH. The ρ(T)ρ(T) is found to show TT-linear behavior above TNT_{\rm N} and exhibits positive curvature below TNT_{\rm N} where significant loss of spin-disorder scattering upon magnetic ordering is observed.

Slow spin dynamics in the hyper-honeycomb Lattice [(C2H5)3NH]2Cu2(C2O4)3 revealed by 1H NMR studies

We report the results of magnetic susceptibility χχ and 1^1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on a three-dimensional hyper-honeycomb lattice compound [(C2_2H5_5)3_3NH]2_2Cu2_2(C2_2O4_4)3_3 (CCCO). The average value of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling between the Cu2+^{2+} (SS = 1/2) spins was determined to be JJ~∼\sim~50 K from the χχ measurements. No long-range magnetic ordering has been observed down to TT = 50 mK, although NMR lines become slightly broader at low temperatures below 1 K. The broadening of the NMR spectrum observed below 1 K reveals that the Cu spin moments remain at this temperature, suggesting a non-spin-singlet ground state. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of 1/T1T_1 at temperatures above 20 K is well explained by paramagnetic thermal spin fluctuations where the fluctuation frequency of Cu2+^{2+} spins is higher than the NMR frequency of the order of MHz. However, a clear signature of the slowing down of the Cu2+^{2+} spin fluctuations was observed at low temperatures where 1/T1T_1 shows a thermally-activated behavior. The magnetic field dependence of the magnitude of the spin excitation gap suggests that the magnetic behaviors of CCCO are characterized as an AFM chain at low temperatures.

Incommensurate and commensurate antiferromagnetic states in CaMn2As2 and SrMn2As2 revealed by 75As NMR

We carried out 75^{75}As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the trigonal CaMn2_2As2_2 and SrMn2_2As2_2 insulators exhibiting antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered states below Néel temperatures TNT_{\rm N} = 62 K and 120 K, respectively. In the paramagnetic state above TNT_{\rm N}, typical quadrupolar-split 75^{75}As-NMR spectra were observed for both systems. The 75^{75}As quadrupolar frequency νQν_{\rm Q} for CaMn2_2As2_2 decreases with decreasing temperature, while νQν_{\rm Q} for SrMn2_2As2_2 increases, showing an opposite temperature dependence. In the AFM state, the relatively sharp and distinct 75^{75}As NMR lines were observed in SrMn2_2As2_2 and the NMR spectra were shifted to lower fields for both magnetic fields HH ∣∣|| cc axis and HH ∣∣|| abab plane, suggesting that the internal fields BintB_{\rm int} at the As site produced by the Mn ordered moments are nearly perpendicular to the external magnetic field direction. No obvious distribution of BintB_{\rm int} was observed in SrMn2_2As2_2, which clearly indicates a commensurate AFM state. In sharp contrast to SrMn2_2As2_2, broad and complex NMR spectra were observed in CaMn2_2As2_2 in the AFM state, which clearly shows a distribution of BintB_{\rm int} at the As site, indicating an incommensurate state. From the analysis of the characteristic shape of the observed spectra, the AFM state of CaMn2_2As2_2 was determined to be a two-dimensional incommensurate state where Mn ordered moments are aligned in the abab plane. A possible origin for the different AFM states in the systems was discussed. Both CaMn2_2As2_2 and SrMn2_2As2_2 show very large anisotropy in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1T_1 in the paramagnetic state. 1/T1T_1 for HH ∣∣|| abab is much larger than that for HH ∣∣|| c$, indicating strong anisotropic AFM spin fluctuations in both compounds.

Ferrimagnetism in EuFe4As12 revealed by 153Eu NMR and 75As NQR measurements

Filled skutterudite compound EuFe4_4As12_{12} shows the highest magnetic ordering temperature of TCT_{\rm C} = 154 K among Eu-based skutterudite compounds, but its magnetic ground state has not been determined yet. Here, we performed 153^{153}Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 75^{75}As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on EuFe4_4As12_{12} to reveal its magnetic ground state as well as the physical properties from a microscopic point of view. From the temperature and magnetic field dependence of 153^{153}Eu NMR spectrum in the magnetically ordered state, we found that the Eu ions are in Eu2+^{2+} state with a nearly 7 μBμ_{\rm B} corresponding to SS = 7/2 spins. Combined with the magnetization measurements which show the reduced saturation moments of 4.5 μBμ_{\rm B}/f.u., we determined the ground magnetic structure in EuFe4_4As12_{12} to be ferrimagnetic where the Eu2+^{2+} 4ff and the Fe 3dd ordered moments are ferromagnetically aligned in each sublattice but the moments between the sublattices are antiferromagnetically aligned. We also found the local distortion at the Eu site from the cubic symmetry in the magnetically ordered state. The relationship between the rattling motion of Eu atoms and the local symmetry of the Eu ions is discussed. From the 75^{75}As NQR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as well as 153^{153}Eu NMR measurements, we found that the 4ff electrons of the Eu ions are well described by the local moment picture in both the magnetic and paramagnetic metallic states.

Magnetic detwinning and biquadratic magnetic interaction in EuFe2As2 revealed by 153Eu NMR

In the nematic state of iron-based superconductors, twin formation often obscures the intrinsic, anisotropic, in-plane physical properties.Relatively high in-plane external magnetic fields HextH_{\rm ext} greater than the typical lab-scale magnetic fields 10--15 T are usually required to completely detwin a sample. However, recently a very small in-plane Hext∼H_{\rm ext} \sim 0.1 T was found to be sufficient for detwinning the nematic domains in EuFe2_2As2_2. To explain this behavior, a microscopic theory based on biquadratic magnetic interactions between the Eu and Fe spins has been proposed. Here, using 153^{153}Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements below the Eu2+^{2+} ordering temperature, we show experimental evidence of the detwinning under small in-plane HextH_{\rm ext}. Our NMR study also reveals the evolution of the angles between the Eu and Fe spins during the detwinning process, which provides the first experimental evidence for the existence of biquadratic coupling in the system.

Volovik Effect and Fermi-Liquid Behavior in the s-Wave Superconductor CaPd2As2: 75As NMR-NQR Measurements

The electronic and magnetic properties of the collapsed-tetragonal CaPd2_2As2_2 superconductor (SC) with a transition temperature of 1.27 K have been investigated by 75^{75}As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements. The temperature (TT) dependence of the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates (1/T1T_1) and the Knight shifts indicate the absence of magnetic correlations in the normal state. In the SC state, 1/T1T_1 measured by 75^{75}As NQR shows a clear Hebel-Slichter (HS) peak just below TcT_{\rm c} and decreases exponentially at lower TT, confirming a conventional ss-wave SC. In addition, the Volovik effect, also known as Doppler shift effect, has been clearly evidenced by the observation of the suppression of the HS peak with applied magnetic field.
