Airfall on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

We here study the transfer process of material from one hemisphere to the other (deposition of airfall material) on an active comet nucleus, specifically 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Our goals are to: 1) quantify the thickness of the airfall debris layers and how it depends on the location of the target area, 2) determine the amount of $\mathrm{H_2O}$ and $\mathrm{CO_2}$ ice that are lost from icy dust assemblages of different sizes during transfer through the coma, and 3) estimate the relative amount of vapor loss in airfall material after deposition in order to understand what locations are expected to be more active than others on the following perihelion approach. We use various numerical simulations, that include orbit dynamics, thermophysics of the nucleus and of individual coma aggregates, coma gas kinetics and hydrodynamics, as well as dust dynamics due to gas drag, to address these questions. We find that the thickness of accumulated airfall material varies substantially with location, and typically is of the order $0.1$-$1\,\mathrm{m}$. The airfall material preserves substantial amounts of water ice even in relatively small (cm-sized) coma aggregates after a rather long ($12\,\mathrm{h}$) residence in the coma. However, $\mathrm{CO_2}$ is lost within a couple of hours even in relatively large (dm-sized) aggregates, and is not expected to be an important component in airfall deposits. We introduce reachability and survivability indices to measure the relative capacity of different regions to simultaneously collect airfall and to preserve its water ice until the next perihelion passage, thereby grading their potential of contributing to comet activity during the next perihelion passage.

Deformed spin-$\frac12$ square lattice in antiferromagnetic NaZnVOPO$_4$(HPO$_4$)

We report the structural and magnetic properties of a new spin-$\frac12$ antiferromagnet NaZnVOPO$_4$(HPO$_4$) studied via x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat, and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, as well as density-functional band-structure calculations. While thermodynamic properties of this compound are well described by the $J_1-J_2$ square-lattice model, \textit{ab initio} calculations suggest a significant deformation of the spin lattice. From fits to the magnetic susceptibility we determine the averaged nearest-neighbor and second-neighbor exchange couplings of $\bar J_1\simeq -1.3$ K and $\bar J_2\simeq 5.6$ K, respectively. Experimental saturation field of 15.3\,T is consistent with these estimates if 20\% spatial anisotropy in $J_1$ is taken into account. Specific heat data signal the onset of a magnetic long-range order at $T_{\rm N} \simeq 2.1$ K, which is further supported by a sharp peak in the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate. The NMR spectra mark the superposition of two P lines due to two noneqivalent P sites where the broad line with the strong hyperfine coupling and short $T_1$ is identified as the P(1) site located within the magnetic planes, while the narrow line with the weak hyperfine coupling and long $T_1$ is designated as the P(2) site located between the planes.

Itinerant G-type antiferromagnet SrCr2As2 studied by magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and NMR measurements

The physical properties of itinerant antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrCr$_2$As$_2$ with body-centered tetragonal ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure were investigated in single crystalline and polycrystalline forms by electrical resistivity $ρ$, heat capacity $C_{\rm p}$, magnetic susceptibility $χ$ versus temperature~$T$ and magnetization $M$ versus applied magnetic field $H$ isotherm measurements as well as $^{75}$As and $^{53}$Cr nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the wide temperature range $T$ = 1.6--900 K. From the $χ(T)$ and $^{75}$As NMR measurements, the G-type AFM state below $T_{\rm N}$ = 615(15) K has been determined, consistent with the previous neutron-diffraction measurements. Direct evidence of magnetic ordering of the Cr spins was shown by the observation of the $^{53}$Cr NMR spectrum under $H$ = 0. From the $χ(T)$ measurements on single-crystal SrCr$_2$As$_2$ under the two different magnetic field directions $H||ab$ and $H||c$ in the AFM state, the Cr ordered moments are shown to align along the $c$ axis in the G-type AFM state. The metallic state is directly evidenced by the $ρ$, $C_{\rm p}$, and NMR measurements, and the density of states at the Fermi energy ${\cal D}(E_{\rm F})$ in the AFM state is estimated to be 7.53 states/eV f.u. for both spin directions which is almost twice the bare ${\cal D}(E_{\rm F})$ estimated from first-principles calculations, suggesting an enhancement of the conduction-carrier mass by a factor of two in the AFM state. The ${\cal D}(E_{\rm F})$ is found to be nearly constant below at least 100 K and is independent of $H$. The $ρ(T)$ is found to show $T$-linear behavior above $T_{\rm N}$ and exhibits positive curvature below $T_{\rm N}$ where significant loss of spin-disorder scattering upon magnetic ordering is observed.

Slow spin dynamics in the hyper-honeycomb Lattice [(C2H5)3NH]2Cu2(C2O4)3 revealed by 1H NMR studies

We report the results of magnetic susceptibility $χ$ and $^1$H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on a three-dimensional hyper-honeycomb lattice compound [(C$_2$H$_5$)$_3$NH]$_2$Cu$_2$(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$ (CCCO). The average value of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling between the Cu$^{2+}$ ($S$ = 1/2) spins was determined to be $J$~$\sim$~50 K from the $χ$ measurements. No long-range magnetic ordering has been observed down to $T$ = 50 mK, although NMR lines become slightly broader at low temperatures below 1 K. The broadening of the NMR spectrum observed below 1 K reveals that the Cu spin moments remain at this temperature, suggesting a non-spin-singlet ground state. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of 1/$T_1$ at temperatures above 20 K is well explained by paramagnetic thermal spin fluctuations where the fluctuation frequency of Cu$^{2+}$ spins is higher than the NMR frequency of the order of MHz. However, a clear signature of the slowing down of the Cu$^{2+}$ spin fluctuations was observed at low temperatures where 1/$T_1$ shows a thermally-activated behavior. The magnetic field dependence of the magnitude of the spin excitation gap suggests that the magnetic behaviors of CCCO are characterized as an AFM chain at low temperatures.

Spin liquid state in a rare-earth hyperkagome lattice

Quantum fluctuations enhanced by frustration and subtle interplay between competing degrees of freedom offer an ideal ground to realize novel states with fractional quantum numbers in quantum materials that defy standard theoretical paradigms. Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a highly entangled state wherein frustration induced strong quantum fluctuations preclude symmetry breaking phase transitions down to zero temperature without any order parameter. Experimental realizations of QSL in quantum materials with spin dimensionality greater than one is very rare. Here, we present our thermodynamic, nuclear magnetic resonance, muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering studies of a new rare-earth hyperkagome compound Li3Yb3Te2O12 in which Yb3+ ions constitute a three dimensional spin-lattice without any detectable disorder. Our comprehensive experiments evince neither signature of magnetic ordering nor spin freezing down to 38 mK that suggest the realization of dynamic liquid-like ground state in this antiferromagnet. The ground state of this material is interpreted by a low energy Jeff = 1/2 degrees of freedom with short range spin correlations. The present results demonstrate a viable basis to explore spin-orbit driven enigmatic correlated quantum states in a new class of rare-earth based three dimensional frustrated magnets that may open new avenues in theoretical and experimental search for spin liquids.

Incommensurate and commensurate antiferromagnetic states in CaMn2As2 and SrMn2As2 revealed by 75As NMR

We carried out $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the trigonal CaMn$_2$As$_2$ and SrMn$_2$As$_2$ insulators exhibiting antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered states below Néel temperatures $T_{\rm N}$ = 62 K and 120 K, respectively. In the paramagnetic state above $T_{\rm N}$, typical quadrupolar-split $^{75}$As-NMR spectra were observed for both systems. The $^{75}$As quadrupolar frequency $ν_{\rm Q}$ for CaMn$_2$As$_2$ decreases with decreasing temperature, while $ν_{\rm Q}$ for SrMn$_2$As$_2$ increases, showing an opposite temperature dependence. In the AFM state, the relatively sharp and distinct $^{75}$As NMR lines were observed in SrMn$_2$As$_2$ and the NMR spectra were shifted to lower fields for both magnetic fields $H$ $||$ $c$ axis and $H$ $||$ $ab$ plane, suggesting that the internal fields $B_{\rm int}$ at the As site produced by the Mn ordered moments are nearly perpendicular to the external magnetic field direction. No obvious distribution of $B_{\rm int}$ was observed in SrMn$_2$As$_2$, which clearly indicates a commensurate AFM state. In sharp contrast to SrMn$_2$As$_2$, broad and complex NMR spectra were observed in CaMn$_2$As$_2$ in the AFM state, which clearly shows a distribution of $B_{\rm int}$ at the As site, indicating an incommensurate state. From the analysis of the characteristic shape of the observed spectra, the AFM state of CaMn$_2$As$_2$ was determined to be a two-dimensional incommensurate state where Mn ordered moments are aligned in the $ab$ plane. A possible origin for the different AFM states in the systems was discussed. Both CaMn$_2$As$_2$ and SrMn$_2$As$_2$ show very large anisotropy in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/$T_1$ in the paramagnetic state. 1/$T_1$ for $H$ $||$ $ab$ is much larger than that for $H$ $|| $c$, indicating strong anisotropic AFM spin fluctuations in both compounds.

Quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in the spin-$\frac12$ antiferromagnet BaNa$_{2}$Cu(VO$_{4}$)$_{2}$

We report synthesis and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$. This orthovanadate has a centrosymmetric crystal structure, $C2/c$, where the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions form spin chains. These chains are arranged in layers, with the chain direction changing by 62$^0$ between the two successive layers. Alternatively, the spin lattice can be viewed as anisotropic triangular layers upon taking the inter-chain interactions into consideration. Despite this potential structural complexity, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, ESR intensity, and NMR shift agree well with the uniform spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain model with an intrachain coupling of $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq 5.6$ K. The saturation field obtained from the magnetic isotherm measurement consistently reproduces the value of $J/k_{\rm B}$. Further, the $^{51}$V NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate mimics the 1D character in the intermediate temperature range, whereas magnetic long-range order sets in below $T_{\rm N} \simeq 0.25$ K. The effective interchain coupling is estimated to be $J_{\perp}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.1$ K. The theoretical estimation of exchange couplings using band-structure calculations reciprocate our experimental findings and unambiguously establish the 1D character of the compound. Finally, the spin lattice of BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$ is compared with the chemically similar but not isostructural compound BaAg$_2$Cu(VO$_4)_2$.

Ferrimagnetism in EuFe4As12 revealed by 153Eu NMR and 75As NQR measurements

Filled skutterudite compound EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ shows the highest magnetic ordering temperature of $T_{\rm C}$ = 154 K among Eu-based skutterudite compounds, but its magnetic ground state has not been determined yet. Here, we performed $^{153}$Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and $^{75}$As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ to reveal its magnetic ground state as well as the physical properties from a microscopic point of view. From the temperature and magnetic field dependence of $^{153}$Eu NMR spectrum in the magnetically ordered state, we found that the Eu ions are in Eu$^{2+}$ state with a nearly 7 $μ_{\rm B}$ corresponding to $S$ = 7/2 spins. Combined with the magnetization measurements which show the reduced saturation moments of 4.5 $μ_{\rm B}$/f.u., we determined the ground magnetic structure in EuFe$_4$As$_{12}$ to be ferrimagnetic where the Eu$^{2+}$ 4$f$ and the Fe 3$d$ ordered moments are ferromagnetically aligned in each sublattice but the moments between the sublattices are antiferromagnetically aligned. We also found the local distortion at the Eu site from the cubic symmetry in the magnetically ordered state. The relationship between the rattling motion of Eu atoms and the local symmetry of the Eu ions is discussed. From the $^{75}$As NQR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time measurements as well as $^{153}$Eu NMR measurements, we found that the 4$f$ electrons of the Eu ions are well described by the local moment picture in both the magnetic and paramagnetic metallic states.

Impact of Nematicity on the Relationship between Antiferromagnetic Fluctuations and Superconductivity in FeSe0.91S0.09 Under Pressure

The sulfur substituted FeSe system, FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$, provides a versatile platform for studying the relationship between nematicity, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity. Here, by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resistivity measurements up to 4.73 GPa on FeSe$_{0.91}$S$_{0.09}$, we established the pressure($p$)-temperature($T$) phase diagram in which the nematic state is suppressed with pressure showing a nematic quantum phase transition (QPT) around $p$ = 0.5 GPa, two SC regions, separated by the QPT, appear and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase emerges above $\sim$3.3 GPa. From the NMR results up to 2.1 GPa, AFM fluctuations are revealed to be characterized by the stripe-type wavevector which remains the same for the two SC regions. Furthermore, the electronic state is found to change in character from non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid around the nematic QPT and persists up to $\sim$ 2.1 GPa. In addition, although the AFM fluctuations correlate with $T_{\rm c}$ in both SC states, demonstrating the importance of the AFM fluctuations for the appearance of SC in the system, we found that, when nematic order is absent, $T_{\rm c}$ is strongly correlated with the AFM fluctuations, whereas $T_{\rm c}$ weakly depends on the AFM fluctuations when nematic order is present. Our findings on FeSe$_{0.91}$S$_{0.09}$ were shown to be applied to the whole FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ system and also provide a new insight into the relationship between AFM fluctuations and SC in Fe-based superconductors.

Magnetic detwinning and biquadratic magnetic interaction in EuFe2As2 revealed by 153Eu NMR

In the nematic state of iron-based superconductors, twin formation often obscures the intrinsic, anisotropic, in-plane physical properties.Relatively high in-plane external magnetic fields $H_{\rm ext}$ greater than the typical lab-scale magnetic fields 10--15 T are usually required to completely detwin a sample. However, recently a very small in-plane $H_{\rm ext} \sim$ 0.1 T was found to be sufficient for detwinning the nematic domains in EuFe$_2$As$_2$. To explain this behavior, a microscopic theory based on biquadratic magnetic interactions between the Eu and Fe spins has been proposed. Here, using $^{153}$Eu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements below the Eu$^{2+}$ ordering temperature, we show experimental evidence of the detwinning under small in-plane $H_{\rm ext}$. Our NMR study also reveals the evolution of the angles between the Eu and Fe spins during the detwinning process, which provides the first experimental evidence for the existence of biquadratic coupling in the system.

Coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin correlations in Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 revealed by 75As nuclear magnetic resonance

Recent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements revealed the coexistence of stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin correlations in both the hole- and electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ families of iron-pnictide superconductors by a Korringa ratio analysis. Motivated by the NMR work, we investigate the possible existence of FM fluctuations in another iron pnictide superconducting family, Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. We re-analyzed our previously reported data in terms of the Korringa ratio and found clear evidence for the coexistence of stripe-type AFM and FM spin correlations in the electron-doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$ system. These NMR data indicate that FM fluctuations exist in general in iron-pnictide superconducting families and thus must be included to capture the phenomenology of the iron pnictides.

Electronic properties of GeTe and Ag- or Sb-substituted GeTe studied by low temperature 125Te NMR

We have carried out $^{125}$Te nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in a wide temperature range of 1.5 -- 300 K to investigate electronic properties of Ge$_{50}$Te$_{50}$, Ag$_{2}$Ge$_{48}$Te$_{50}$ and Sb$_{2}$Ge$_{48}$Te$_{50}$ from a microscopic point of view. From the temperature dependence of NMR shift ($K$) and nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate (1/$T_1$), we found that two bands contribute to the physical properties of the materials. One band overlaps the Fermi level providing the metallic state where no strong electron correlations are revealed by Korringa analysis. The other band is separated from the Fermi level by an energy gap of $E_{\rm g}/k_{\rm B}$ $\sim$ 67 K, which gives rise to the semiconductor-like properties. First principle calculation revealed that the metallic band originates from the Ge vacancy while the semiconductor-like band may be related to the fine structure of the density of states near the Fermi level. Low temperature $^{125}$Te NMR data for the materials studied here clearly show that the Ag substitution increases hole concentration while Sb substitution decreases it.

Spin Liquid State in the 3D Frustrated Antiferromagnet PbCuTe2O6: NMR and muSR Studies

PbCuTe2O6 is a rare example of a spin liquid candidate featuring a three dimensional magnetic lattice. Strong geometric frustration arises from the dominant antiferromagnetic interaction which generates a hyperkagome network of Cu2+ ions although additional interactions enhance the magnetic lattice connectivity. Through a combination of magnetization measurements and local probe investigation by NMR and muSR down to 20 mK, we provide a robust evidence for the absence of magnetic freezing in the ground state. The local spin susceptibility probed by the NMR shift hardly deviates from the macroscopic one down to 1 K pointing to a homogeneous magnetic system with a low defect concentration. The saturation of the NMR shift and the sublinear power law temperature (T) evolution of the 1/T1 NMR relaxation rate at low T point to a non-singlet ground state favoring a gapless fermionic description of the magnetic excitations. Below 1 K a pronounced slowing down of the spin dynamics is witnessed, which may signal a reconstruction of spinon Fermi surface. Nonetheless, the compound remains in a fluctuating spin liquid state down to the lowest temperature of the present investigation.

Volovik Effect and Fermi-Liquid Behavior in the s-Wave Superconductor CaPd2As2: 75As NMR-NQR Measurements

The electronic and magnetic properties of the collapsed-tetragonal CaPd$_2$As$_2$ superconductor (SC) with a transition temperature of 1.27 K have been investigated by $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements. The temperature ($T$) dependence of the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates (1/$T_1$) and the Knight shifts indicate the absence of magnetic correlations in the normal state. In the SC state, 1/$T_1$ measured by $^{75}$As NQR shows a clear Hebel-Slichter (HS) peak just below $T_{\rm c}$ and decreases exponentially at lower $T$, confirming a conventional $s$-wave SC. In addition, the Volovik effect, also known as Doppler shift effect, has been clearly evidenced by the observation of the suppression of the HS peak with applied magnetic field.

Antiferromagnetic spin correlations and pseudogap-like behavior in Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 studied by 75As nuclear magnetic resonance and anisotropic resistivity

We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of single-crystalline Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x$ = 0.023, 0.028, 0.033, and 0.059) annealed at 350~$^{\circ}$C for 7 days. From the observation of a characteristic shape of $^{75}$As NMR spectra in the stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, as in the case of $x$ = 0 ($T_{\rm N}$ = 170 K), clear evidence for the commensurate AFM phase transition with the concomitant structural phase transition is observed in $x$ = 0.023 ($T_{\rm N}$ = 106 K) and $x$ = 0.028 ($T_{\rm N}$ = 53 K). Through the temperature dependence of the Knight shifts and the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates (1/$T_1$), although stripe-type AFM spin fluctuations are realized in the paramagnetic state as in the case of other iron pnictide superconductors, we found a gradual decrease of the AFM spin fluctuations below a crossover temperature $T^*$ which was nearly independent of Co-substitution concentration, and is attributed to a pseudogap-like behavior in the spin excitation spectra of these systems. The $T^*$ feature finds correlation with features in the temperature-dependent inter-plane resistivity, $ρ_c(T)$, but not with the in-plane resistivity $ρ_a (T)$. The temperature evolution of anisotropic stripe-type AFM spin fluctuations are tracked in the paramagnetic and pseudogap phases by the 1/$T_1$ data measured under magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the $c$ axis. Based on our NMR data, we have added a pseudogap-like phase to the magnetic and electronic phase diagram of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$.

Antiferromagnetism of Zn$_2$VO(PO$_4)_2$ and the dilution with Ti$^{4+}$

We report static and dynamic properties of the antiferromagnetic compound Zn$_{2}$(VO)(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$, and the consequences of non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ doping at the V$^{4+}$ site. $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) consistently show the formation of the long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_N= 3.8-3.9$\,K. The critical exponent $β=0.33 \pm 0.02$ estimated from the temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization measured by $^{31}$P NMR at 9.4\,MHz is consistent with universality classes of three-dimensional spin models. The isotropic and axial hyperfine couplings between the $^{31}$P nuclei and V$^{4+}$ spins are $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm iso} = (9221 \pm 100)$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$ and $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm ax} = (1010 \pm 50)$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$, respectively. Magnetic susceptibility data above 6.5\,K and heat capacity data above 4.5\,K are well described by quantum Monte-Carlo simulations for the Heisenberg model on the square lattice with $J\simeq 7.7$\,K. This value of $J$ is consistent with the values obtained from the NMR shift, $1/T_1$ and electron spin resonance (ESR) intensity analysis. Doping Zn$_2$VO(PO$_4)_2$ with non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ leads to a marginal increase in the $J$ value and the overall dilution of the spin lattice. In contrast to the recent \textit{ab initio} results, we find neither evidence for the monoclinic structural distortion nor signatures of the magnetic one-dimensionality for doped samples with up to 15\% of Ti$^{4+}$. The Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ decreases linearly with increasing the amount of the non-magnetic dopant.

Coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin correlations in SrCo2As2 revealed by 59Co and 75As NMR

In nonsuperconducting, metallic paramagnetic SrCo2As2, inelastic neutron scattering measurements have revealed strong stripe-type $χ$(q) = ($π$,0) antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin correlations. Here, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on 59Co and 75As nuclei, we demonstrate that stronger ferromagnetic (FM) spin correlations coexist in SrCo2As2. Our NMR data are consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations which show enhancements at both q = ($π$,0) and the in-plane FM q = 0 wavevectors in static magnetic susceptibility $χ$(q). We suggest that the strong FM fluctuations prevent superconductivity in SrCo2As2, despite the presence of stripe-type AFM fluctuations. Furthermore, since DFT calculations have consistently revealed similar enhancements of the $χ$(q) at both q = ($π$,0) and q = 0 in the iron-based superconductors and parent compounds, our observation of FM correlations in SrCo2As2 calls for detailed studies of FM correlations in the iron-based superconductors.

Competing Magnetic Fluctuations in Iron Pnictide Superconductors: Role of Ferromagnetic Spin Correlations Revealed by NMR

In the iron pnictide superconductors, theoretical calculations have consistently shown enhancements of the static magnetic susceptibility at both the stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) and in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) wavevectors. However, the possible existence of FM fluctuations has not yet been examined from a microscopic point of view. Here, using $^{75}$As NMR data, we provide clear evidence for the existence of FM spin correlations in both the hole- and electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ families of iron-pnictide superconductors. These FM fluctuations appear to compete with superconductivity and are thus a crucial ingredient to understanding the variability of $T_{\rm c}$ and the shape of the superconducting dome in these and other iron-pnictide families.

Crystallography and Physical Properties of BaCo2As2, Ba{0.94}K{0.06}Co2As2 and Ba{0.78}K{0.22}Co2As2

The crystallographic and physical properties of polycrystalline and single crystal samples of BaCo2As2 and K-doped Ba{1-x}K{x}Co2As2 (x = 0.06, 0.22) are investigated by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization, heat capacity Cp, {75}As NMR and electrical resistivity rho measurements versus temperature T. The crystals were grown using both Sn flux and CoAs self-flux, where the Sn-grown crystals contain 1.6-2.0 mol% Sn. All samples crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure (space group I4/mmm). For BaCo2As2, powder neutron diffraction data show that the c-axis lattice parameter exhibits anomalous negative thermal expansion from 10 to 300 K, whereas the a-axis lattice parameter and the unit cell volume show normal positive thermal expansion over this T range. No transitions in BaCo2As2 were found in this T range from any of the measurements. Below 40-50 K, we find rho ~ T^2 indicating a Fermi liquid ground state. A large density of states at the Fermi energy D(EF) ~ 18 states/(eV f.u.) for both spin directions is found from low-T Cp(T) measurements, whereas the band structure calculations give D(EF) = 8.23 states/(eV f.u.). The {75}As NMR shift data versus T have the same T dependence as the chi(T) data, demonstrating that the derived chi(T) data are intrinsic. The observed {75}As nuclear spin dynamics are consistent with the presence of ferromagnetic and/or stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The crystals of Ba{0.78}K{0.22}Co2As2 were grown in Sn flux and show properties very similar to those of undoped BaCo2As2. On the other hand, the crystals from two batches of Ba{0.94}K{0.06}Co2As2 grown in CoAs self-flux show evidence of weak ferromagnetism at T < 10 K with small ordered moments at 1.8 K of 0.007 and 0.03 muB per formula unit, respectively.

Magnetic transitions in the spin S=5/2 frustrated magnet BiMn2PO6 and strong lattice softening in BiMn2PO6 and BiZn2PO6 below 200 K

The crystallographic, magnetic and thermal properties of BiMn2PO6 and BiZn2PO6 were investigated by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility χ, heat capacity Cp, and 31P NMR measurements as well as by density-functional band-theory calculations. Both compounds show a strong monotonic lattice softening on cooling, where the Debye temperature decreases by a factor of two from Θ_D=650K at T=300K to Θ_D=300K at T=2K. The χ(T) data for BiMn2PO6 above 150K follow a Curie-Weiss law with a Curie constant consistent with a S=5/2 with g=2 and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Weiss temperature θ_CW= -78K. The χdata indicate long-range AFM ordering below TN=30K, confirmed by a sharp lambda-type peak in Cp(T) at 28.8K. The band-theory calculations indicate that BiMn2PO6 is an AFM compound with dominant interactions J1/kB= 6.7K and J3/kB= 5.6K along the legs and rungs of a two-leg spin-ladder, respectively. In addition to the long-range AFM ordering at TN=30K, a second transition at 10 K is observed from the χand NMR measurements but is not evident in the Cp data. The Cp data at low T suggest a significant contribution from AFM spin waves moving in three dimensions and the absence of a spin-wave gap. A detailed analysis of the NMR spectra indicates commensurate magnetic order between 10K and 30K and a possible incommensurate modulation and/or spin canting below 10K. The commensurate order is consistent with microscopic simulations that yield a collinear Neel-type AFM spin arrangement both within and between the ladders, despite the presence of multiple weak interactions frustrating this magnetic structure. Frustration for AFM ordering and 1D spatial anisotropy of the 3D spin interactions are manifested in the frustration ratio f=|θCW|/TN=2.6, indicating a suppression of TN from 68K in the absence of these effects to 30K in BiMn2PO6.

The suppression of electron correlations in the collapsed tetragonal phase of CaFe2As2 under ambient pressure demonstrated by 75As NMR-NQR measurements

The static and the dynamic spin correlations in the low temperature collapsed tetragonal and the high temperature tetragonal phase in CaFe2As2 have been investigated by 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements. Through the temperature (T) dependence of the nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates (1/T1) and the Knight shifts, although stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin correlations are realized in the high temperature tetragonal phase, no trace of the AFM spin correlations can be found in the non-superconducting, low temperature, collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase. Given that there is no magnetic broadening in 75As NMR spectra, together with the T-independent behavior of magnetic susceptibility (x) and the T dependence of 1/T1Tx, we conclude that Fe spin correlations are completely quenched statically and dynamically in the non-superconducting cT phase in CaFe2As2.

Coexistence of Half-Metallic Itinerant Ferromagnetism with Local-Moment Antiferromagnetism in Ba{0.60}K{0.40}Mn2As2

Magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution x-ray diffraction and magnetic field-dependent neutron diffraction measurements reveal a novel magnetic ground state of Ba{0.60}K{0.40}Mn2As2 in which itinerant ferromagnetism (FM) below a Curie temperature TC = 100 K arising from the doped conduction holes coexists with collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM) of the Mn local moments that order below a Neel temperature TN = 480 K. The FM ordered moments are aligned in the tetragonal ab-plane and are orthogonal to the AFM-ordered Mn moments that are aligned along the c-axis. The magnitude and nature of the low-T FM ordered moment correspond to complete polarization of the doped-hole spins (half-metallic itinerant FM) as deduced from magnetization and ab-plane electrical resistivity measurements.

Crystallographic, Electronic, Thermal and Magnetic Properties of Single-Crystal SrCo2As2

In tetragonal SrCo2As2 single crystals, inelastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrated that strong stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations occur at a temperature T = 5 K [W. Jayasekara et al., arXiv:1306.5174] that are the same as in the isostructural AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) parent compounds of high-Tc superconductors. This surprising discovery suggests that SrCo2As2 may also be a good parent compound for high-Tc superconductivity. Here, structural and thermal expansion, electrical resistivity rho, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), heat capacity Cp, magnetic susceptibility chi, 75As NMR and neutron diffraction measurements of SrCo2As2 crystals are reported together with LDA band structure calculations that shed further light on this fascinating material. The c-axis thermal expansion coefficient alpha_c is negative from 7 to 300 K, whereas alpha_a is positive over this T range. The rho(T) shows metallic character. The ARPES measurements and band theory confirm the metallic character and in addition show the presence of a flat band near the Fermi energy E_F. The band calculations exhibit an extremely sharp peak in the density of states D(E_F) arising from a flat d_{x^2 - y^2} band. A comparison of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the electronic specific heat with chi(T = 0) suggests the presence of strong ferromagnetic itinerant spin correlations which on the basis of the Stoner criterion predicts that SrCo2As2 should be an itinerant ferromagnet, in conflict with the magnetization data. The chi(T) does have a large magnitude, but also exhibits a broad maximum at 115 K suggestive of dynamic short-range AFM spin correlations, in agreement with the neutron scattering data. The measurements show no evidence for any type of phase transition between 1.3 and 300 K and we propose that metallic SrCo2As2 has a gapless quantum spin-liquid ground state.

Exchange randomness and spin dynamics in the frustrated magnetic Keplerate {W72V30}

The magnetic properties and spin dynamics of the spin frustrated polyoxometalate {W72V30}, where 30 V^{4+} ions (s = 1/2) occupy the sites of an icosidodecahedron, have been investigated by low temperature magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, proton and vanadium nuclear magnetic resonance, and theoretical studies. The field-dependent magnetization at 0.5 K increases monotonically up to 50 T without any sign of staircase behavior. This low-temperature behavior cannot be explained by a Heisenberg model based on a single value of the nearest-neighbor exchange coupling. We analyze this behavior upon assuming a rather broad distribution of nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. Slow spin dynamics of {W72V30} at low temperatures is observed from the magnetic field and temperature dependence of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 measurements.

Experimental evidence of a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering in the frustrated CoAl2O4 spinel

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffaction (ND), x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on the frustrated A-site spinel CoAl2O4 compound reveal a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering below Tn = 9.8(2) K. A high quality powder sample characterized by x-ray diffraction that indicates a relatively low Co-Al inversion parameter x = 0.057(20) in (Co1-xAlx)[Al2-xCox]O4, shows a broad maximum around 15 K in magnetic susceptibility and a sharp peak at Tn in heat capacity. The average ordered magnetic moment of Co^2+ (S = 3/2) ions at the A-site is estimated to be 2.4(1) Bohr magneton from NMR and 1.9(5) Bohr magneton from ND which are smaller than the expected value of 3 Bohr magneton for S = 3/2 and g = 2. Antiferromagnetic spin uctuations and correlations in the paramagnetic state are revealed from the magnetic susceptibility, NMR and ND measurements, which are due to spin frustration and site inversion effects in the system. The ND data also show short-range dynamic magnetic ordering that persists to a temperature that is almost twice Tn.

Metal-insulator transition in antiferromagnetic $Ba_{1-x}K_xMn_2As_2$ $(0\le x\le0.4)$ single crystals studied by $^{55}$Mn and $^{75}$As NMR

The magnetic structure and metal-insulator transition in antiferromagnetic (AFM) BaMn2As2 and Ba1-xKxMn2As2 single crystals have been investigated by 55Mn and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. In the parent AFM insulator BaMn2As2 with a Neel temperature TN = 625 K, we observed a 55Mn zero-field NMR (ZFNMR) spectrum and confirmed the G-type AFM structure from the field dependence of the 55Mn spectra and 75As-NMR spectra below TN. In hole-doped crystals with x > 0.01, similar 55Mn ZFNMR spectra were observed and the AFM state was revealed to be robust up to x = 0.4 with the ordered moment nearly independent of x. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates (1/T1) for both nuclei in the doped samples follow the Korringa relation T1T = const., indicating a metallic state. This confirms the coexistence of AFM ordered localized Mn spins and conduction carriers from a microscopic point of view. From the x-dependence of (T1T)^(-1/2) for both nuclei, we conclude that this transition is caused by vanishing of the hole concentration as the transition is approached from the metallic side.

$^{75}$As NMR of Ba(Fe$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ in High Magnetic Field

The superconducting state of an optimally doped single crystal of Ba(Fe$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07}$)$_2$As$_2$ was investigated by $^{75}$As NMR in high magnetic fields from 6.4 T to 28 T. It was found that the Knight shift is least affected by vortex supercurrents in high magnetic fields, $H>11$ T, revealing slow, possibly higher order than linear, increase with temperature at $T \lesssim 0.5 \, T_c$, with $T_c \approx 23 \, K$. This is consistent with the extended s-wave state with $A_{1g}$ symmetry but the precise details of the gap structure are harder to resolve. Measurements of the NMR spin-spin relaxation time, $T_2$, indicate a strong indirect exchange interaction at all temperatures. Below the superconducting transition temperature vortex dynamics lead to an anomalous dip in $T_2$ at the vortex freezing transition from which we obtain the vortex phase diagram up to $H = 28$ T.

Magnetic Exchange Interactions in BaMn2As2: A Case Study of the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg Model

BaMn2As2 is unique among BaT2As2 compounds crystallizing in the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure, which contain stacked square lattices of 3d transition metal T atoms, since it has an insulating large-moment (3.9 muB/Mn) G-type (checkerboard) antiferromagnetic AF ground state. We report measurements of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T from 300 to 1000 K of single crystals of BaMn2As2, and magnetic inelastic neutron scattering measurements at 8 K and 75As NMR measurements from 4 to 300 K of polycrystalline samples. The Neel temperature determined from the chi(T) measurements is TN = 618(3) K. The measurements are analyzed using the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model. Linear spin wave theory for G-type AF ordering and classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations and molecular field theory calculations of chi(T) and of the magnetic heat capacity Cmag(T) are presented versus J1, J2 and Jc. We also obtain band theoretical estimates of the exchange couplings in BaMn2As2. From analyses of our chi(T), NMR, neutron scattering, and previously published heat capacity data for BaMn2As2 on the basis of the above theories for the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model and our band-theoretical results, our best estimates of the exchange constants in BaMn2As2 are J1 = 13 meV, J2/J1 = 0.3 and Jc/J1 = 0.1, which are all antiferromagnetic. From our classical Monte Carlo simulations of the G-type AF ordering transition, these exchange parameters predict TN = 640 K for spin S = 5/2, in close agreement with experiment. Using spin wave theory, we also utilize these exchange constants to estimate the suppression of the ordered moment due to quantum fluctuations for comparison with the observed value and again obtain S = 5/2 for the Mn spin.

Phase separation and frustrated square lattice magnetism of Na1.5VOPO4F0.5

Crystal structure, electronic structure, and magnetic behavior of the spin-1/2 quantum magnet Na1.5VOPO4F0.5 are reported. The disorder of Na atoms leads to a sequence of structural phase transitions revealed by synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and electron diffraction. The high-temperature second-order alpha <--> beta transition at 500 K is of the order-disorder type, whereas the low-temperature beta <--> gamma+gamma' transition around 250 K is of the first order and leads to a phase separation toward the polymorphs with long-range (gamma) and short-range (gamma') order of Na. Despite the complex structural changes, the magnetic behavior of Na1.5VOPO4F0.5 probed by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electron spin resonance measurements is well described by the regular frustrated square lattice model of the high-temperature alpha-polymorph. The averaged nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor couplings are J1 ~ -3.7 K and J2 ~ 6.6 K, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance further reveals the long-range ordering below TN = 2.6 K in low magnetic fields. Although the experimental data are consistent with the simplified square-lattice description, band structure calculations suggest that the ordering of Na atoms introduces a large number of inequivalent exchange couplings that split the square lattice into plaquettes. Additionally, the direct connection between the vanadium polyhedra induces an unusually strong interlayer coupling having effect on the transition entropy and the transition anomaly in the specific heat. Peculiar features of the low-temperature crystal structure and the relation to isostructural materials suggest Na1.5VOPO4F0.5 as a parent compound for the experimental study of tetramerized square lattices as well as frustrated square lattices with different values of spin.

Stabilization of an ambient pressure, collapsed tetragonal phase in CaFe2As2 and tuning of the orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic transition temperature by over 70 K by control of nano-precipitates

We have found a remarkably large response of the transition temperature of CaFe2As2 single crystals grown out of excess FeAs to annealing / quenching temperature. Whereas crystals that are annealed at 400 C exhibit a first order phase transition from a high temperature tetragonal to a low temperature orthorhombic and antiferromagnetic state near 170 K, crystals that have been quenched from 960 C exhibit a transition from a high temperature tetragonal phase to a low temperature, non-magnetic, collapsed tetragonal phase below 100 K. By use of temperature dependent electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements we have been able to demonstrate that the transition temperature can be reduced in a monotonic fashion by varying the annealing / quenching temperature from 400 to 850 C with the low temperature state remaining antiferromagnetic for transition temperatures larger than 100 K and becoming collapsed tetragonal / non-magnetic for transition temperatures below 90 K. This suppression of the orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic phase transition and its ultimate replacement with the collapsed tetragonal / non-magnetic phase is similar to what has been observed for CaFe2As2 under hydrostatic pressure. Transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that there is a temperature dependent, width of formation of CaFe2As2 with a decreasing amount of excess Fe and As being soluble in the single crystal at lower annealing temperatures. For samples quenched from 960 C there is a fine (of order 10 nm), semi-uniform distribution of precipitate that can be associated with an average strain field whereas for samples annealed at 400 C the excess Fe and As form mesoscopic grains that induce little strain throughout the CaFe2As2 lattice.

Orientation dependence of the Schottky barrier height for La$_0.6$Sr$_0.4$MnO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterojunctions

The authors report on the crystallographic orientation dependence of the Schottky properties for heterojunctions between a half-metallic ferromagnet La$_0.6$Sr$_0.4$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) and Nb-doped SrTiO3 semiconductor. The Schottky barrier height determined by in situ photoemission measurements is independent for the substrate orientations (001) and (110), while the magnetic properties of LSMO (110) films are more enhanced than for (001) films. These results suggest that the performance of magnetic devices based on ferromagnetic manganite is improved by using (110)-oriented substrates.

Single Crystal 31P NMR Studies of the Frustrated Square Lattice Compound Pb2(VO)(PO4)2

The static and dynamic properties of V^{4+} spins (S = 1/2) in the frustrated square lattice compound Pb2(VO)(PO4)2 were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility chi and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift (K) and 31P nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 measurements on a single crystal. This compound exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order below TN \simeq 3.65 K. NMR spectra above TN show two distinct lines corresponding to two inequivalent P sites present in the crystal structure. The observed asymmetry in hyperfine coupling constant for the in-plane (P1) P site directly points towards a distortion in the square lattice at the microscopic level, consistent with the monoclinic crystal structure. The nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings were estimated to be J1/kB = (-5.4 \pm 0.5) K (ferromagnetic) and J2/kB = (9.3 \pm 0.6) K (antiferromagnetic), respectively. 1/(T1 T chi) is almost T-independent at high temperatures due to random fluctuation of spin moments. Below 20 K, the compound shows an enhancement of 1/(T1 T chi) which arises from a growth of antiferromagnetic spin correlations above TN. Below TN and for the field applied along the c-axis, the NMR spectrum for the P1 site splits into two satellites and the spacing between them increases monotonically with decreasing T which is a direct evidence of a columnar antiferromagnetic ordering with spins lying in the ab-plane. This type of magnetic ordering is consistent with expectation from the J2/J1 \simeq -1.72 ratio. The critical exponent beta = 0.25 \pm 0.02 estimated from the temperature dependence of sublattice magnetization as measured by 31P NMR at 11.13 MHz is close to the value (0.231) predicted for the two-dimensional XY model.
