Engineering Calcium Signaling of Astrocytes for Neural-Molecular Computing Logic Gates

This paper proposes the use of Eukaryotic cells, namely astrocytes, to develop logic gates. The logic gates are achieved by manipulating the threshold of Ca2+^{2+} ion flows between the cells, based on the input signals. Through wet-lab experiments that engineer the astrocytes cells with pcDNA3.1-hGPR17 genes, we show that both AND and OR gates can be implemented by controlling Ca2+^{2+} signals that flow through the population. A reinforced learning platform is also presented in the paper to optimize two main parameters, which are the Ca2+^{2+} activation threshold and time slot of input signals TbT_b into the gate. This design platform caters for any size and connectivity of the cell population, by taking into consideration the delay and noise produced from the signalling between the cells, in order to fine-tune the activation threshold and input signal time slot parameters. To validate the effectiveness of the reinforced learning platform, a Ca2+^{2+} Signalling-based Molecular Communications Simulator was used to simulate the signalling between the astrocyte cells. The results from the simulation showed that an optimum value for both the Ca2+^{2+} activation threshold and time slot of input signals TbT_b is required to achieve optimal computation accuracy, where up to 90\% accuracy for both the AND and OR gates can be achieved with the right combination of values. The reinforced learning platform for the engineered astrocytes to create digital logic gates can be used for future Neural-Molecular Computing chip, which can revolutionize brain implants that are constructed from engineered biological cells.

Ba1-xNaxTi2Sb2O (0.0 <= x <= 0.33): A Layered Titanium-based Pnictide Oxide Superconductor

A new layered Ti-based pnictide oxide superconductor, Ba1-xNaxTi2Sb2O (0.0 <= x <= 0.33), is reported. X-ray studies reveal it crystallizes in the tetragonal CeCr2Si2C structure. The undoped parent compound, BaTi2Sb2O (P4/mmm; a=4.1196(1)Å; c=8.0951(2)Å), exhibits a CDW/SDW transition at 54K. Upon chemical doping with Na, the CDW/SDW transition is systematically suppressed and super-conductivity arises with the critical temperatures, Tc, increasing to 5.5 K. Bulk superconductivity is confirmed by resistivity, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Like the high-Tc cuprates and the iron pnictides, superconductivity in BaTi2Sb2O arises from an ordered state. Similarities and differences to the cuprate and iron pnictide supercon-ductors are discussed.

Weak Coupling BCS-like Superconductivity in the Pnictide Oxide Ba1−x_{1-x}Nax_xTi2_2Sb2_2O (x=0 and 0.15)

We report the results of low-temperature heat capacity measurements of the pnictide oxide superconductor BaTi2_2Sb2_2O doped with sodium. The temperature and field dependent heat capacity data are well described by a single-gap BCS theory. The estimated values for the normal state Sommerfeld constant, the heat capacity jump at TcT_c, and the electron-phonon coupling constant are in favor of a conventional weak coupling superconductivity mediated by electron-phonon interaction. The results are discussed with regard to and compared with recent first principle calculations.
