Pressure effects on magnetic ground states in cobalt doped multiferroic Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$WO$_4$

Using ambient pressure x-ray and high pressure neutron diffraction, we studied the pressure effect on structural and magnetic properties of multiferroic Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$WO$_4$ single crystals ($x=0, 0.05, 0.135$ and $0.17$), and compared it with the effects of doping. Both Co doping and pressure stretch the Mn-Mn chain along the $c$~direction. At high doping level ($x=0.135$ and $0.17$), pressure and Co doping drive the system in a similar way and induce a spin-flop transition for the $x=0.135$ compound. In contrast, magnetic ground states at lower doping level ($x=0$ and $0.05$) are robust against pressure but experience a pronounced change upon Co substitution. As Co introduces both chemical pressure and magnetic anisotropy into the frustrated magnetic system, our results suggest the magnetic anisotropy is the main driving force for the Co induced phase transitions at low doping level, and chemical pressure plays a more significant role at higher Co concentrations.

Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations from topological surface states of metallic Bi$_2$Se$_{2.1}$Te$_{0.9}$

We have studied the quantum oscillations in the conductivity of metallic, p-type Bi$_2$Se$_{2.1}$Te$_{0.9}$. The dependence of the oscillations on the angle of the magnetic field with the surface as well as the Berry phase determined from the Landau level fan plot indicate that the observed oscillations arise from surface carriers with the characteristic Dirac dispersion. Several quantities characterizing the surface conduction are calculated employing the Lifshitz-Kosevich theory. The low value of the Fermi energy with respect to the Dirac point is consistent with the metallic character of the bulk hole carriers. We conclude that, due to the peculiar shape of the valence band, the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations of the bulk carriers are shifted to higher magnetic fields which allows for the detection of the quantum oscillations from the topological surface states at lower field.

Superconductivity in titanium-based pnictide oxide compounds

Superconductivity in a novel class of layered materials, Ti-based pnictide oxides, was recently discovered. These compounds have attracted interest since they combine features of copper oxide and iron pnictide superconductors. Here the transition metal (titanium) forms two-dimensional Ti$_2$O layers (anti structure to the CuO$_2$ planes), capped by pnictogen ions (similar to Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers). The pnictide oxide compounds show a spin or charge density wave phase which coexists with superconductivity in some members of the family. Unlike the cuprates, but similar to iron pnictides, the parent compounds of pnictide oxides are metals with specific nesting properties of the Fermi surface which leads to the density wave instability. The nature of the superconductivity, coexisting with the density wave order, and the possible competition or mutual interaction between both states is one of the central questions of recent studies. This short review summarizes the current knowledge from an experimental as well as theoretical point of view and discusses some of the open questions and possible future developments.

Ba1-xNaxTi2Sb2O (0.0 <= x <= 0.33): A Layered Titanium-based Pnictide Oxide Superconductor

A new layered Ti-based pnictide oxide superconductor, Ba1-xNaxTi2Sb2O (0.0 <= x <= 0.33), is reported. X-ray studies reveal it crystallizes in the tetragonal CeCr2Si2C structure. The undoped parent compound, BaTi2Sb2O (P4/mmm; a=4.1196(1)Å; c=8.0951(2)Å), exhibits a CDW/SDW transition at 54K. Upon chemical doping with Na, the CDW/SDW transition is systematically suppressed and super-conductivity arises with the critical temperatures, Tc, increasing to 5.5 K. Bulk superconductivity is confirmed by resistivity, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Like the high-Tc cuprates and the iron pnictides, superconductivity in BaTi2Sb2O arises from an ordered state. Similarities and differences to the cuprate and iron pnictide supercon-ductors are discussed.

Weak Coupling BCS-like Superconductivity in the Pnictide Oxide Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O (x=0 and 0.15)

We report the results of low-temperature heat capacity measurements of the pnictide oxide superconductor BaTi$_2$Sb$_2$O doped with sodium. The temperature and field dependent heat capacity data are well described by a single-gap BCS theory. The estimated values for the normal state Sommerfeld constant, the heat capacity jump at $T_c$, and the electron-phonon coupling constant are in favor of a conventional weak coupling superconductivity mediated by electron-phonon interaction. The results are discussed with regard to and compared with recent first principle calculations.

Magnetic orders and spin-flop transitions in the cobalt doped multiferroic $\rm Mn_{1-x}Co_{x}WO_4$

We present a comprehensive single crystal neutron diffraction investigation of the $\rm Mn_{1-x}Co_{x}WO_4$ with $0.02\leq x \leq0.30$. At lower concentration $x \leq 0.05$, the system is quickly driven into the multiferroic phase with spin structure forming an elliptical spiral order similar to the parent compound. The reduction of electric polarization is ascribed to the tilting of the spiral plane. For $x\sim 0.075$, the magnetic structure undergoes a spin flop transition that is characterized by a sudden rotation of the spin helix envelope into the $ac$ plane. This spin structure persists for concentration up to $x=0.15$, where additional competing magnetic orders appear at low temperature. For $0.17 \leq x \leq 0.30$, the system experiences another spin flop transition and recovers the low-$x$ spiral spin configuration. A simple commensurate spin structure with $\vec{q}=(0.5,0,0)$ is found to coexist with the incommensurate spiral order. The complex evolution of magnetic structure in Co doped $\rm MnWO_4$ contrasts sharply with other transition metal ion doped $\rm Mn_{1-x}A_xWO_4$ (A=Zn, Mg, Fe) where the chemical substitutions stabilize only one type of magnetic structure. The rich phase diagram of $\rm Mn_{1-x}Co_{x}WO_4 $ results from the interplay between magnetic frustration and spin anisotropy of the Co ions.

Long-Range Magnetic Interactions in the Multiferroic Antiferromagnet $\rm MnWO_4$

The spin-wave excitations of the multiferroic $\rm MnWO_4$ have been measured in its low-temperature collinear commensurate phase using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. These excitations can be well described by a Heisenberg model with competing long-range exchange interactions and a single-ion anisotropy term. The magnetic interactions are strongly frustrated within the zigzag spin chain along c axis and between chains along the a axis, while the coupling between spin along the b axis is much weaker. The balance of these interactions results in the noncollinear incommensurate spin structure associated with the magnetoelectric effect, and the perturbation of the magnetic interactions leads to the observed rich phase diagrams of the chemically-doped materials. This delicate balance can also be tuned by the application of external electric or magnetic fields to achieve magnetoelectric control of this type of materials.
