Continuation of global solution curves using global parameters

This paper provides both the theoretical results and numerical calculations of global solution curves, by continuation in global parameters. Each point on the solution curves is computed directly as the global parameter is varied, so that all of the turns that the solution curves make, as well as its different branches, appear automatically on the computer screen. For radial $p$-Laplace equations we present a simplified derivation of the regularizing transformation from P. Korman [15], and use this transformation for more accurate numerical computations. While for $p>2$ the solutions are not of class $C^2$, we show that they are of the form $w(r^{\frac{p}{2(p-1)}})$, where $w(z)$ is of class $C^2$. Bifurcation diagrams are also calculated for non-autonomous problems, and for the fourth order equations modeling elastic beams. We show that the first harmonic of the solution can also serve as a global parameter.

Existence and uniqueness of solutions for a class of $p$-Laplace equations on a ball

For a class of equations generalizing the model case \[ Δ_p u-a(r)u^{p-1}+b(r)u^q=0 \; \; \mbox{in $B$}, \; \; u=0 \; \; \mbox{on $\partial B$}, \] where $B$ is the unit ball in $R^n$, $n \geq 1$, $r=|x|$, $p,q>1$, and $Δ_p$ denotes the $p$-Laplace operator, we give conditions for the existence and uniqueness of positive solution. In case $n=1$, we give a more general result.

Non-singular solutions of $p$-Laplace problems, allowing multiple changes of sign in the nonlinearity

For the $p$-Laplace Dirichlet problem (where $φ(t)=t|t|^{p-2}$, $p>1$) \[ φ(u'(x))'+ f(u(x))=0 \;\;\;\; \mbox{for $-1<x<1$}, \;\; u(-1)=u(1)=0 \] assume that $f'(u)>(p-1)\frac{f(u)}{u}>0$ for $u>γ>0$, while $\int_u^γf(t) \, dt < 0$ for all $u \in (0,γ)$. Then any positive solution, with $\max_{(-1,1)} u(x)=u(0)>γ$, is non-singular, no matter how many times $f(u)$ changes sign on $(0,γ)$. Uniqueness of solution follows.

On the interaction of species capable of explosive growth

In the classical Lotka-Volterra population models, the interacting species affect each other's growth rate. We propose an alternative model, in which the species affect each other through the limitation coefficients, rather then through the growth rates. This appears to be more realistic: the presence of foxes is not likely to diminish the fertility of rabbits, but will contribute to limiting rabbit's population. Both the cases of predation and of competition are considered, as well as competition in case of periodic coefficients. Our model becomes linear when one switches to the reciprocals of the variables. In another direction we use a similar idea to derive a multiplicity result for a class of periodic equations.

A global solution curve for a class of free boundary value problems arising in plasma physics

We study the existence and multiplicity of solutions and the global solution curve of the following free boundary value problem, arising in plasma physics, see R. Temam [18], and H. Berestycki and H. Brezis [3]: find a function $u(x)$ and a constant $b$, satisfying \[ Δu+g(x,u)=p(x) \;\; \mbox{in $D$} \] \[ u \,| \, _{\partial D}=b, \;\;\;\; \int_{\partial D} \frac{\partial u}{\partial n} \, ds=0 \,. \] Here $D \subset R^n$, is a bounded domain, with a smooth boundary. This problem can be seen as a PDE generalization of the periodic problem for one-dimensional pendulum-like equations. We use continuation techniques. Our approach is suitable for numerical computations.

A global solution curve for a class of periodic problems, including the relativistic pendulum

Using continuation methods, we study the global solution structure of periodic solutions for a class of periodically forced equations, generalizing the case of relativistic pendulum. We obtain results on the existence and multiplicity of periodic solutions. Our approach is suitable for numerical computations, and in fact we present some numerically computed bifurcation diagrams illustrating our results.

Curves of equiharmonic solutions, and problems at resonance

We consider the semilinear Dirichlet problem \[ Δu+kg(u)=μ_1 φ_1+\cdots +μ_n φ_n+e(x) \;\; \mbox{for $x \in Ω$}, \;\; u=0 \;\; \mbox{on $\partial Ω$}, \] where $φ_k$ is the $k$-th eigenfunction of the Laplacian on $Ω$ and $e(x) \perp φ_k$, $k=1, \ldots, n$. Write the solution in the form $u(x)= Σ_{i=1}^n ξ_i φ_i+U(x)$, with $ U \perp φ_k$, $k=1, \ldots, n$. Starting with $k=0$, when the problem is linear, we continue the solution in $k$ by keeping $ξ=(ξ_1, \ldots,ξ_n)$ fixed, but allowing for $μ=(μ_1, \ldots,μ_n)$ to vary. Studying the map $ξ\rightarrow μ$ provides us with the existence and multiplicity results for the above problem. We apply our results to problems at resonance, at both the principal and higher eigenvalues. Our approach is suitable for numerical calculations, which we implement, illustrating our results.

Exact multiplicity of solutions for some semilinear Dirichlet problems

The classical result of A. Ambrosetti and G. Prodi [1], in the form of M.S. Berger and E. Podolak [4], gives the exact number of solutions for the problem \[ Δu+g(u)= μϕ_1(x)+e(x) \;\; \mbox{in $D$} , \;\; u=0 \;\; \mbox{on $\partial D$} \,, \] depending on the real parameter $μ$, for a class of convex $g(u)$, and $\int _D e(x) ϕ_1(x)\, dx=0$ (where $ϕ_1(x)>0$ is the principal eigenfunction of the Laplacian on $D$, and $D \subset R^n$ is a smooth domain). By considering generalized harmonics, we give a similar result for the problem \[ Δu+g(u)= μf(x) \;\; \mbox{in $D$} , \;\; u=0 \;\; \mbox{on $\partial D$} \,, \] with $f(x)>0$. Such problems occur, for example, in "fishing" applications that we discuss, and propose a new model. Our approach also produces a very simple proof of the anti-maximum principle of Ph. Clément and L.A. Peletier [5].

Explicit solutions and multiplicity results for some equations with the $p$-Laplacian

We derive explicit ground state solutions for several equations with the $p$-Laplacian in $R^n$, including (here $φ(z)=z|z|^{p-2}$, with $p>1$) \[ φ\left(u'(r)\right)' +\frac{n-1}{r} φ\left(u'(r)\right)+u^M+u^Q=0 \,. \] The constant $M>0$ is assumed to be below the critical power, while $Q=\frac{M p-p+1}{p-1}$ is above the critical power. This explicit solution is used to give a multiplicity result, similarly to C.S. Lin and W.-M. Ni [11]. We also give the $p$-Laplace version of G. Bratu's solution [3]. In another direction, we present a change of variables which removes the non-autonomous term $r^α$ in \[ φ\left(u'(r)\right)' +\frac{n-1}{r} φ\left(u'(r)\right)+r^α f(u)=0 \,, \] while preserving the form of this equation. In particular, we study singular equations, when $α<0$. The Coulomb case $α=-1$ turned out to give the critical power.

Families of solution curves for some non-autonomous problems

The paper studies families of positive solution curves for non-autonomous two-point problems \[ u"+λf(u)-μg(x)=0, \;\; -1<x<1, \;\; u(-1)=u(1)=0 \] depending on two positive parameters $λ$ and $μ$. We regard $λ$ as a primary parameter, giving us the solution curves, while the secondary parameter $μ$ allows for evolution of these curves. We give conditions under which the solution curves do not intersect, and the maximum value of solutions provides a global parameter. Our primary application is to constant yield harvesting for diffusive logistic equation. We implement numerical computations of the solution curves, using continuation in a global parameter, a technique that we developed in [11].

Global solution curves for self-similar equations

We consider positive solutions of a semilinear Dirichlet problem \[ Δu+λf(u)=0, \;\; \mbox{for $|x|<1$}, \;\; u=0 , \;\; \mbox{when $|x|=1$} \] on a unit ball in $R^n$. For four classes of self-similar equations it is possible to parameterize the entire (global) solution curve through the solution of a single initial value problem. This allows us to derive results on the multiplicity of solutions, and on their Morse indices. In particular, we easily recover the classical results of D.D. Joseph and T.S. Lundgren [6] on the Gelfand problem. Surprisingly, the situation turns out to be different for the generalized Gelfand problem, where infinitely many turns are possible for any space dimension $n \geq 3$. We also derive detailed results for the equation modeling electrostatic micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), in particular we easily recover the main result of Z. Guo and J. Wei [4], and we show that the Morse index of the solutions increases by one at each turn. We also consider the self-similar Henon's equation.

Global solution curves for several classes of singular periodic problems

Using continuation methods and bifurcation theory, we study the exact multiplicity of periodic solutions, and the global solution structure, for three classes of periodically forced equations with singularities, including the equations arising in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), the ones in condensed matter physics, as well as A.C. Lazer and S. Solimini's \cite{LS} problem.

Infinitely many solutions for three classes of self-similar equations, with the $p$-Laplace operator

We study the global solution curves, and prove the existence of infinitely many positive solutions for three classes of self-similar equations, with $p$-Laplace operator. In case $p=2$, these are well-known problems involving the Gelfand equation, the equation modeling electrostatic micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), and a polynomial nonlinearity. We extend the classical results of D.D. Joseph and T.S. Lundgren \cite{JL} to the case $p \ne 2$, and we generalize the main result of Z. Guo and J. Wei \cite{GW} on the equation modeling MEMS.

Nonlinear elliptic equations and systems with linear part at resonance

The famous result of Landesman and Lazer [10] dealt with resonance at a simple eigenvalue. Soon after publication of [10], Williams [14] gave an extension for repeated eigenvalues. The conditions in Williams [14] are rather restrictive, and no examples were ever given. We show that seemingly different classical result by Lazer and Leach [11], on forced harmonic oscillators at resonance, provides an example for this theorem. The article by Williams [14] also contained a shorter proof. We use a similar approach to study resonance for $2 \times 2$ systems. We derive conditions for existence of solutions, which turned out to depend on the spectral properties of the linear part.

Regularization of radial solutions of $p$-Laplace equations, and computations using infinite series

We consider radial solutions of equations with the $p$-Laplace operator in $R^n$. We introduce a change of variables, which in effect removes the singularity at $r=0$. While solutions are not of class $C^2$, in general, we show that solutions are $C^2$ functions of $\displaystyle r^{\frac{p}{2(p-1)}}$. Then we express the solution as an infinite series in powers of $\displaystyle r^{\frac{p}{p-1}}$, and give explicit formulas for its coefficients. We implement this algorithm, using Mathematica software. Mathematica's ability to perform the exact computations turns out to be crucial.
