The ionization problem in quantum mechanics

While it is well-known experimentally that a neutral atom can bind at most one or two extra electrons, deriving this fact rigorously from first principles of quantum mechanics remains a very challenging problem, often referred to as the ionization conjecture. We will review some of Elliott H. Lieb's fundamental contributions to this topic and discuss their impacts on several recent developments.

Bosonization of Fermionic Many-Body Dynamics

We consider the quantum many-body evolution of a homogeneous Fermi gas in three dimensions in the coupled semiclassical and mean-field scaling regime. We study a class of initial data describing collective particle-hole pair excitations on the Fermi ball. Using a rigorous version of approximate bosonization, we prove that the many-body evolution can be approximated in Fock space norm by a quasifree bosonic evolution of the collective particle-hole excitations.

Two-term expansion of the ground state one-body density matrix of a mean-field Bose gas

We consider the homogeneous Bose gas on a unit torus in the mean-field regime when the interaction strength is proportional to the inverse of the particle number. In the limit when the number of particles becomes large, we derive a two-term expansion of the one-body density matrix of the ground state. The proof is based on a cubic correction to Bogoliubov's approximation of the ground state energy and the ground state.

Improved stability for 2D attractive Bose gases

We study the ground-state energy of N attractive bosons in the plane. The interaction is scaled for the gas to be dilute, so that the corresponding mean-field problem is a local non-linear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation. We improve the conditions under which one can prove that the many-body problem is stable (of the second kind). This implies, using previous results, that the many-body ground states and dynamics converge to the NLS ones for an extended range of diluteness parameters.

Optimal Upper Bound for the Correlation Energy of a Fermi Gas in the Mean-Field Regime

While Hartree-Fock theory is well established as a fundamental approximation for interacting fermions, it has been unclear how to describe corrections to it due to many-body correlations. In this paper we start from the Hartree-Fock state given by plane waves and introduce collective particle-hole pair excitations. These pairs can be approximately described by a bosonic quadratic Hamiltonian. We use Bogoliubov theory to construct a trial state yielding a rigorous Gell-Mann-Brueckner-type upper bound to the ground state energy. Our result justifies the random phase approximation in the mean-field scaling regime, for repulsive, regular interaction potentials.

Norm approximation for many-body quantum dynamics: focusing case in low dimensions

We study the norm approximation to the Schrödinger dynamics of $N$ bosons in $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d=1,2$) with an interaction potential of the form $N^{dβ-1}w(N^β(x-y))$. Here we are interested in the focusing case $w\le 0$. Assuming that there is complete Bose-Einstein condensation in the initial state, we show that in the large $N$ limit, the evolution of the condensate is effectively described by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the evolution of the fluctuations around the condensate is governed by a quadratic Hamiltonian, resulting from Bogoliubov approximation. Our result holds true for all $β>0$ when $d=1$ and for all $0<β<1$ when $d=2$.

A note on the validity of Bogoliubov correction to mean-field dynamics

We study the norm approximation to the Schrödinger dynamics of $N$ bosons in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with an interaction potential of the form $N^{3β-1}w(N^β(x-y))$. Assuming that in the initial state the particles outside of the condensate form a quasi-free state with finite kinetic energy, we show that in the large $N$ limit, the fluctuations around the condensate can be effectively described using Bogoliubov approximation for all $0\le β<1/2$. The range of $β$ is expected to be optimal for this large class of initial states.

Bose Gases at Positive Temperature and Non-Linear Gibbs Measures

We summarize recent results on positive temperature equilibrium states of large bosonic systems. The emphasis will be on the connection between bosonic grand-canonical thermal states and the (semi-) classical Gibbs measures on one-body quantum states built using the corresponding mean-field energy functionals. An illustrative comparison with the case of "distinguishable" particles (boltzons) is provided.

Nonexistence in Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsäcker theory with small nuclear charges

We study the ionization problem in the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsäcker theory for atoms and molecules. We prove the nonexistence of minimizers for the energy functional when the number of electrons is large and the total nuclear charge is small. This nonexistence result also applies to external potentials decaying faster than the Coulomb potential. In the case of arbitrary nuclear charges, we obtain the nonexistence of stable minimizers and radial minimizers.

The maximal excess charge in Müller density-matrix-functional theory

We consider an atom described by Müller theory, which is similar to Hartree-Fock theory, but with a modified exchange term. We prove that a nucleus of charge Z can bind at most Z+C electrons, where C is a universal constant. Our proof proceeds by comparison with Thomas-Fermi theory and a key ingredient is a novel bound on the number of electrons far from the nucleus.

A note on 2D focusing many-boson systems

We consider a 2D quantum system of $N$ bosons in a trapping potential $|x|^s$, interacting via a pair potential of the form $N^{2β-1} w(N^βx)$. We show that for all $0 \textless{} β\textless{} (s+1)/(s+2)$, the leading order behavior of ground states of the many-body system is described in the large $N$ limit by the corresponding cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger energy functional. Our result covers the focusing case ($w \leq 0$) where even the stability of the many-body system is not obvious. This answers an open question mentioned by X.~Chen and J.~Holmer for harmonic traps ($s=2$). Together with the BBGKY hierarchy approach used by these authors, our result implies the convergence of the many-body quantum dynamics to the focusing NLS equation with harmonic trap for all $0 \textless{} β\textless{} 3/4$.

Derivation of nonlinear Gibbs measures from many-body quantum mechanics

We prove that nonlinear Gibbs measures can be obtained from the corresponding many-body, grand-canonical, quantum Gibbs states, in a mean-field limit where the temperature T diverges and the interaction behaves as 1/T. We proceed by characterizing the interacting Gibbs state as minimizing a functional counting the free-energy relatively to the non-interacting case. We then perform an infinite-dimensional analogue of phase-space semiclassical analysis, using fine properties of the quantum relative entropy, the link between quantum de Finetti measures and upper/lower symbols in a coherent state basis, as well as Berezin-Lieb type inequalities. Our results cover the measure built on the defocusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger functional on a finite interval, as well as smoother interactions in dimensions d\textgreater{}1.

Diagonalization of bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians by Bogoliubov transformations

We provide general conditions for which bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians on Fock spaces can be diagonalized by Bogoliubov transformations. Our results cover the case when quantum systems have infinite degrees of freedom and the associated one-body kinetic and paring operators are unbounded. Our sufficient conditions are optimal in the sense that they become necessary when the relevant one-body operators commute.

Fluctuations around Hartree states in the mean-field regime

We consider the dynamics of a large system of N interacting bosons in the mean-field regime where the interaction is of order 1/N. We prove that the fluctuations around the nonlinear Hartree state are generated by an effective quadratic Hamiltonian in Fock space, which is derived from Bogoliubov's approximation. We use a direct method in the N-particle space, which is different from the one based on coherent states in Fock space.

Fractional Hardy-Lieb-Thirring and related inequalities for interacting systems

We prove analogues of the Lieb-Thirring and Hardy-Lieb-Thirring inequalities for many-body quantum systems with fractional kinetic operators and homogeneous interaction potentials, where no anti-symmetry on the wave functions is assumed. These many-body inequalities imply interesting one-body interpolation inequalities, and we show that the corresponding one- and many-body inequalities are actually equivalent in certain cases.

Ground states of large bosonic systems: The gross-pitaevskii limit revisited

We study the ground state of a dilute Bose gas in a scaling limit where the Gross-Pitaevskii functional emerges. This is a repulsive non-linear Schrödinger functional whose quartic term is proportional to the scattering length of the interparticle interaction potential. We propose a new derivation of this limit problem, with a method that bypasses some of the technical difficulties that previous derivations had to face. The new method is based on a combination of Dyson's lemma, the quantum de Finetti theorem and a second moment estimate for ground states of the effective Dyson Hamiltonian. It applies equally well to the case where magnetic fields or rotation are present.

The mean-field approximation and the non-linear Schrödinger functional for trapped Bose gases

We study the ground state of a trapped Bose gas, starting from the full many-body Schr{ö}dinger Hamiltonian, and derive the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger energy functional in the limit of large particle number, when the interaction potential converges slowly to a Dirac delta function. Our method is based on quantitative estimates on the discrepancy between the full many-body energy and its mean-field approximation using Hartree states. These are proved using finite dimensional localization and a quantitative version of the quantum de Finetti theorem. Our approach covers the case of attractive interactions in the regime of stability. In particular, our main new result is a derivation of the 2D attractive nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger ground state.

preprint2014arXiv

Bogoliubov spectrum of interacting Bose gases

We study the large-N limit of a system of N bosons interacting with a potential of intensity 1/N. When the ground state energy is to the first order given by Hartree's theory, we study the next order, predicted by Bogoliubov's theory. We show the convergence of the lower eigenvalues and eigenfunctions towards that of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian (up to a convenient unitary transform). We also prove the convergence of the free energy when the system is sufficiently trapped. Our results are valid in an abstract setting, our main assumptions being that the Hartree ground state is unique and non-degenerate, and that there is complete Bose-Einstein condensation on this state. Using our method we then treat two applications: atoms with ''bosonic'' electrons on one hand, and trapped 2D and 3D Coulomb gases on the other hand.

Collective excitations of Bose gases in the mean-field regime

We study the spectrum of a large system of $N$ identical bosons interacting via a two-body potential with strength $1/N$. In this mean-field regime, Bogoliubov's theory predicts that the spectrum of the $N$-particle Hamiltonian can be approximated by that of an effective quadratic Hamiltonian acting on Fock space, which describes the fluctuations around a condensed state. Recently, Bogoliubov's theory has been justified rigorously in the case that the low-energy eigenvectors of the $N$-particle Hamiltonian display complete condensation in the unique minimizer of the corresponding Hartree functional. In this paper, we shall justify Bogoliubov's theory for the high-energy part of the spectrum of the $N$-particle Hamiltonian corresponding to (non-linear) excited states of the Hartree functional. Moreover, we shall extend the existing results on the excitation spectrum to the case of non-uniqueness and/or degeneracy of the Hartree minimizer. In particular, the latter covers the case of rotating Bose gases, when the rotation speed is large enough to break the symmetry and to produce multiple quantized vortices in the Hartree minimizer.

Remarks on the quantum de Finetti theorem for bosonic systems

The quantum de Finetti theorem asserts that the k-body density matrices of a N-body bosonic state approach a convex combination of Hartree states (pure tensor powers) when N is large and k fixed. In this note we review a construction due to Christandl, Mitchison, König and Renner valid for finite dimensional Hilbert spaces, which gives a quantitative version of the theorem. We first propose a variant of their proof that leads to a slightly improved estimate. Next we provide an alternative proof of an explicit formula due to Chiribella, which gives the density matrices of the constructed state as a function of those of the original state.

preprint2013arXiv

Derivation of Hartree's theory for generic mean-field Bose systems

In this paper we provide a novel strategy to prove the validity of Hartree's theory for the ground state energy of bosonic quantum systems in the mean-field regime. For the well-known case of trapped Bose gases, this can be shown using the strong quantum de Finetti theorem, which gives the structure of infinite hierarchies of k-particles density matrices. Here we deal with the case where some particles are allowed to escape to infinity, leading to a lack of compactness. Our approach is based on two ingredients: (1) a weak version of the quantum de Finetti theorem, and (2) geometric techniques for many-body systems. Our strategy does not rely on any special property of the interaction between the particles. In particular, our results cover those of Benguria-Lieb and Lieb-Yau for, respectively, bosonic atoms and boson stars.

New bounds on the maximum ionization of atoms

We prove that the maximum number $N_c$ of non-relativistic electrons that a nucleus of charge $Z$ can bind is less than $1.22Z+3Z^{1/3}$. This improves Lieb's upper bound $N_c<2Z+1$ [{\it Phys. Rev. A} {\bf 29}, 3018-3028 (1984)] when $Z\ge 6$. Our method also applies to non-relativistic atoms in magnetic field and to pseudo-relativistic atoms. We show that in these cases, under appropriate conditions, $\limsup_{Z\to \infty}N_c/Z \le 1.22$.
