Bounding p-Brauer characters in finite groups with two conjugacy classes of p-elements

Let k(B_0) and l(B_0) respectively denote the number of ordinary and p-Brauer irreducible characters in the principal block B_0 of a finite group G. We prove that, if k(B_0)-l(B_0)=1, then l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p=11 and l(B_0)=9. This follows from a more general result that for every finite group G in which all non-trivial p-elements are conjugate, l(B_0)\geq p-1 or else p = 11 and G/O_{p'}(G) =11^2:SL(2,5). These results are useful in the study of principal blocks with a few characters. We propose that, in every finite group G of order divisible by p, the number of irreducible Brauer characters in the principal p-block of G is always at least 2\sqrt{p-1}+1-k_p(G), where k_p(G) is the number of conjugacy classes of p-elements of G. This indeed is a consequence of the celebrated Alperin weight conjecture and known results on bounding the number of p-regular classes in finite groups.

Characteristic Covering Numbers of Finite Simple Groups

We show that, if $w_1, \ldots , w_6$ are words which are not an identity of any (non-abelian) finite simple group, then $w_1(G)w_2(G) \cdots w_6(G) = G$ for all (non-abelian) finite simple groups $G$. In particular, for every word $w$, either $w(G)^6 = G$ for all finite simple groups, or $w(G)=1$ for some finite simple groups. These theorems follow from more general results we obtain on characteristic collections of finite groups and their covering numbers, which are of independent interest and have additional applications.

Irreducible restrictions of representations of symmetric and alternating groups in small characteristics

Building on reduction theorems and dimension bounds for symmetric groups obtained in our earlier work, we classify the irreducible restrictions of representations of the symmetric and alternating groups to proper subgroups. Such classification is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. Our results fit into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.

McKay graphs for alternating and classical groups

Let $G$ be a finite group, and $α$ a nontrivial character of $G$. The McKay graph $\mathcal{M}(G,α)$ has the irreducible characters of $G$ as vertices, with an edge from $χ_1$ to $χ_2$ if $χ_2$ is a constituent of $αχ_1$. We study the diameters of McKay graphs for finite simple groups $G$. For alternating groups, we prove a conjecture made in [LST]: there is an absolute constant $C$ such that $\hbox{diam}\,{\mathcal M}(G,α) \le C\frac{\log |\mathsf{A}_n|}{\log α(1)}$ for all nontrivial irreducible characters $α$ of $\mathsf{A}_n$. Also for classsical groups of symplectic or orthogonal type of rank $r$, we establish a linear upper bound $Cr$ on the diameters of all nontrivial McKay graphs.

Products of normal subsets and derangements

In recent years there has been significant progress in the study of products of subsets of finite groups and of finite simple groups in particular. In this paper we consider which families of finite simple groups $G$ have the property that for each $ε> 0$ there exists $N > 0$ such that, if $|G| \ge N$ and $S, T$ are normal subsets of $G$ with at least $ε|G|$ elements each, then every non-trivial element of $G$ is the product of an element of $S$ and an element of $T$. We show that this holds in a strong sense for finite simple groups of Lie type of bounded rank, while it does not hold for alternating groups or groups of the form ${\mathrm{PSL}}_n(q)$ where $q$ is fixed and $n$ tends to infinity. Our second main result is that any element in a transitive permutation representation of a sufficiently large finite simple group is a product of two derangements.

Rigid local systems and finite general linear groups

We use hypergeometric sheaves on $G_m/F_q$, which are particular sorts of rigid local systems, to construct explicit local systems whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the finite general linear groups $GL_n(q)$ for any $n \ge 2$ and and any prime power $q$, so long as $q > 3$ when $n=2$. This paper continues a program of finding simple (in the sense of simple to remember) families of exponential sums whose monodromy groups are certain finite groups of Lie type, cf. [Gr], [KT1], [KT2], [KT3] for (certain) finite symplectic and unitary groups, or certain sporadic groups, cf. [KRL], [KRLT1], [KRLT2], [KRLT3]. The novelty of this paper is obtaining $GL_n(q)$ in this hypergeometric way. A pullback construction then yields local systems on $A^1/F_q$ whose geometric monodromy groups are $SL_n(q)$. These turn out to recover a construction of Abhyankar.

Character Levels and Character Bounds

We develop the concept of character level for the complex irreducible characters of finite, general or special, linear and unitary groups. We give characterizations of the level of a character in terms of its Lusztig's label and in terms of its degree. Then we prove explicit upper bounds for character values at elements with not-too-large centralizers and derive upper bounds on the covering number and mixing time of random walks corresponding to these conjugacy classes. We also characterize the level of the character in terms of certain dual pairs and prove explicit exponential character bounds for the character values, provided that the level is not too large.

Restriction of odd degree characters and natural correspondences

Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $n > 1$, and let $P$ denote a maximal parabolic subgroup of $GL_n(q)$ with Levi subgroup $GL_{n-1}(q) \times GL_1(q)$. We restrict the odd-degree irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ to $P$ to discover a natural correspondence of characters, both for $GL_n(q)$ and $SL_n(q)$. A similar result is established for certain finite groups with self-normalizing Sylow $p$-subgroups. We also construct a canonical bijection between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $S_n$ and those of $M$, where $M$ is any maximal subgroup of $S_n$ of odd index; as well as between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $G = GL_n(q)$ or $GU_n(q)$ with $q$ odd and those of $N_{G}(P)$, where $P$ is a Sylow $2$-subgroup of $G$. Since our bijections commute with the action of the absolute Galois group over the rationals, we conclude that the fields of values of character correspondents are the same. We use this to answer some questions of R. Gow.

Adequate groups of low degree

The notion of adequate subgroups was introduced by Jack Thorne [42]. It is a weakening of the notion of big subgroups used in generalizations of the Taylor-Wiles method for proving the automorphy of certain Galois representations. Using this idea, Thorne was able to strengthen many automorphy lifting theorems. It was shown in [22] that if the dimension is small compared to the characteristic then all absolutely irreducible representations are adequate. Here we extend the result by showing that, in almost all cases, absolutely irreducible kG-modules in characteristic p, whose irreducible G+-summands have dimension less than p (where G+ denotes the subgroup of G generated by all p-elements of G), are adequate.

Effective Results on the Waring Problem for Finite Simple Groups

Let G be a finite quasisimple group of Lie type. We show that there are regular semisimple elements x,y in G, x of prime order, and |y| is divisible by at most two primes, such that the product of the conjugacy classes of x and y contain all non-central elements of G. In fact in all but four cases, y can be chosen to be of square-free order. Using this result, we prove an effective version of one of the main results of Larsen, Shalev and Tiep by showing that, given any positive integer m, if the order of a finite simple group S is at least f(m) for a specified function f, then every element in S is a product of two mth powers. Furthermore, the verbal width of the mth power word on any finite simple group S is at most g(m) for a specified function g. We also show that, given any two non-trivial words v, w, if G is a finite quasisimple group of large enough order, then v(G)w(G) contains all non-central elements of G.

Arithmetic results on orbits of linear groups

Let $p$ be a prime and $G$ a subgroup of $GL_d(p)$. We define $G$ to be $p$-exceptional if it has order divisible by $p$, but all its orbits on vectors have size coprime to $p$. We obtain a classification of $p$-exceptional linear groups. This has consequences for a well known conjecture in representation theory, and also for a longstanding question concerning 1/2-transitive linear groups (i.e. those having all orbits on nonzero vectors of equal length), classifying those of order divisible by $p$.

A Refined Waring Problem for Finite Simple Groups

Let v and w be nontrivial words in two free groups. We prove that, for all sufficiently large finite non-abelian simple groups G, there exist subsets C of v(G) and D of w(G) of size such that every element of G can be realized in at least one way as the product of an element of C and an element of D and the average number of such representations is O(log |G|). In particular, if w is a fixed nontrivial word and G is a sufficiently large finite non-abelian simple group, then w(G) contains a thin base of order 2. This is a non-abelian analogue of a result of Van Vu for the classical Waring problem. Further results concerning thin bases of G of order 2 are established for any finite group and for any compact Lie group G.

Conjugacy action, induced representations and the Steinberg square for simple groups of Lie type

Let $G$ be a finite simple group of Lie type, and let $π_G$ be the permutation representation of $G$ associated with the action of $G$ on itself by conjugation. We prove that every irreducible representation of $G$ is a constituent of $π_G$, unless $G=PSU_n(q)$ and $n$ is coprime to $2(q+1)$, where precisely one irreducible representation fails. Let St be the Steinberg representation of $G$. We prove that a complex irreducible representation of $G$ is a constituent of the tensor square $St\otimes St$, with the same exceptions as in the previous statement.

Products of conjugacy classes in finite and algebraic simple groups

We prove the Arad-Herzog conjecture for various families of finite simple groups- if A and B are nontrivial conjugacy classes, then AB is not a conjugacy class. We also prove that if G is a finite simple group of Lie type and A and B are nontrivial conjugacy classes, either both semisimple or both unipotent, then AB is not a conjugacy class. We also prove a strong version of the Arad-Herzog conjecture for simple algebraic groups and in particular show that almost always the product of two conjugacy classes in a simple algebraic group consists of infinitely many conjugacy classes. As a consequence we obtain a complete classification of pairs of centralizers in a simple algebraic group which have dense product. In particular, there are no dense double cosets of the centralizer of a noncentral element. This result has been used by Prasad in considering Tits systems for psuedoreductive groups. Our final result is a generalization of the Baer-Suzuki theorem for p-elements with p a prime at least 5.

Lifting in Frattini Covers and A Characterization of Finite Solvable Groups

We prove a lifting theorem for odd Frattini covers of finite groups. Using this, we characterize solvable groups and more generally p-solvable groups in terms of containing a triple of elements of distinct prime power orders with product 1. This is also related to various questions about Fried's modular tower program and properties of Hurwitz spaces of covers of curves.

Waring Problem for Finite Quasisimple Groups

The classical Waring problem deals with expressing every natural number as a sum of g(k) kth powers. Similar problems for finite simple groups have been studied recently, and in this paper we study them for finite quasisimple groups G. We show that for a fixed non-trivial group word w and large enough G we have w(G)^3=G, namely every element of G is a product of 3 values of w. For various families of finite quasisimple groups, including covers of alternating groups, we obtain a stronger result, namely w(G)^2=G. However, in contrast with the case of simple groups, we show that w(G)^2 need not equal G for all large G. If k>2 then x^k y^k fails to be surjective for infinitely many finite quasisimple groups. The case k=2 turns out to be exceptional. Indeed, our last result shows that every element of a finite quasisimple group is a product of two squares. This can be regarded as a non-commutative analogue of Lagrange's four squares theorem.

A problem of Kollar and Larsen on finite linear groups and crepant resolutions

The notion of age of elements of complex linear groups was introduced by M. Reid and is of importance in algebraic geometry, in particular in the study of crepant resolutions and of quotients of Calabi-Yau varieties. In this paper, we solve a problem raised by J. Kollar and M. Larsen on the structure of finite irreducible linear groups generated by elements of age at most 1. More generally, we bound the dimension of finite irreducible linear groups generated by elements of bounded deviation. As a consequence of our main results, we derive some properties of symmetric spaces for the unitayr group having shortest closed geodesics of bounded length, and of quotients of affine space by a finite group having a crepant resolution.

Cycle indices for finite orthogonal groups of even characteristic

We develop cycle index generating functions for orthogonal groups in even characteristic, and give some enumerative applications. A key step is the determination of the values of the complex linear-Weil characters of the finite symplectic group, and their inductions to the general linear group, at unipotent elements. We also define and study several natural probability measures on integer partitions.

The Largest Irreducible Representations of Simple Groups

Answering a question of I. M. Isaacs, we show that the largest degree of irreducible complex representations of any finite non-abelian simple group can be bounded in terms of the smaller degrees. We also study the asymptotic behavior of this largest degree for finite groups of Lie type. Moreover, we show that for groups of Lie type, the Steinberg character has largest degree among all unipotent characters.
