Good filtrations for generalized Schur algebras

Given a quasi-hereditary superalgebra $A$, the first author and R. Muth have defined generalized Schur bi-superalgebras $T^A(n)$ and proved that these algebras are again quasi-hereditary. In particular, $T^A(n)$ comes with a family of standard modules. Developing the work of Donkin and Mathieu on good filtrations, we prove that tensor product of standard modules over $T^A(n)$ has a standard filtration.

Irreducible restrictions of representations of symmetric and alternating groups in small characteristics

Building on reduction theorems and dimension bounds for symmetric groups obtained in our earlier work, we classify the irreducible restrictions of representations of the symmetric and alternating groups to proper subgroups. Such classification is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. Our results fit into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.

Blocks of symmetric groups, semicuspidal KLR algebras and zigzag Schur-Weyl duality

We prove Turner's conjecture, which describes the blocks of the Hecke algebras of the symmetric groups up to derived equivalence as certain explicit Turner double algebras. Turner doubles are Schur-algebra-like `local' objects, which replace wreath products of Brauer tree algebras in the context of the Broué abelian defect group conjecture for blocks of symmetric groups with non-abelian defect groups. The main tools used in the proof are generalized Schur algebras corresponding to wreath products of zigzag algebras and imaginary semicuspidal quotients of affine KLR algebras.

Restriction of odd degree characters and natural correspondences

Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $n > 1$, and let $P$ denote a maximal parabolic subgroup of $GL_n(q)$ with Levi subgroup $GL_{n-1}(q) \times GL_1(q)$. We restrict the odd-degree irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ to $P$ to discover a natural correspondence of characters, both for $GL_n(q)$ and $SL_n(q)$. A similar result is established for certain finite groups with self-normalizing Sylow $p$-subgroups. We also construct a canonical bijection between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $S_n$ and those of $M$, where $M$ is any maximal subgroup of $S_n$ of odd index; as well as between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $G = GL_n(q)$ or $GU_n(q)$ with $q$ odd and those of $N_{G}(P)$, where $P$ is a Sylow $2$-subgroup of $G$. Since our bijections commute with the action of the absolute Galois group over the rationals, we conclude that the fields of values of character correspondents are the same. We use this to answer some questions of R. Gow.

Turner doubles and generalized Schur algebras

Turner's Conjecture describes all blocks of symmetric groups and Hecke algebras up to derived equivalence in terms of certain double algebras. With a view towards a proof of this conjecture, we develop a general theory of Turner doubles. In particular, we describe doubles as explicit maximal symmetric subalgebras of certain generalized Schur algebras and establish a Schur-Weyl duality with wreath product algebras.

Modular Representation Theory of Symmetric Groups

We review some recent advances in modular representation theory of symmetric groups and related Hecke algebras. We discuss connections with Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras and gradings on the blocks of the group algebras $FΣ_n$, which these connections reveal; graded categorification and connections with quantum groups and crystal bases; modular branching rules and the Mullineaux map; graded cellular structure and graded Specht modules; cuspidal systems for affine KLR algebras and imaginary Schur-Weyl duality, which connects representation theory of these algebras to the usual Schur algebras of smaller rank.

Homological properties of finite type Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras

We give an algebraic construction of standard modules (infinite dimensional modules categorifying the PBW basis of the underlying quantized enveloping algebra) for Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras in all finite types. This allows us to prove in an elementary way that these algebras satisfy the homological properties of an `affine quasi-hereditary algebra.' In simply-laced types these properties were established originally by Kato via a geometric approach. We also construct some Koszul-like projective resolutions of standard modules corresponding to multiplicity-free positive roots.

Imaginary Schur-Weyl duality

We study imaginary representations of the Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras of affine Lie type. Irreducible modules for such algebras arise as simple heads of standard modules. In order to define standard modules one needs to have a cuspidal system for a fixed convex preorder. A cuspidal system consists of irreducible cuspidal modules---one for each real positive root for the corresponding affine root system ${\tt X}_l^{(1)}$, as well as irreducible imaginary modules---one for each $l$-multipartition. We study imaginary modules by means of `imaginary Schur-Weyl duality'. We introduce an imaginary analogue of tensor space and the imaginary Schur algebra. We construct a projective generator for the imaginary Schur algebra, which yields a Morita equivalence between the imaginary and the classical Schur algebra. We construct imaginary analogues of Gelfand-Graev representations, Ringel duality and the Jacobi-Trudy formula.

Modular branching rules for projective representations of symmetric groups and lowering operators for the supergroup Q(n)

There are two approaches to projective representation theory of symmetric and alternating groups, which are powerful enough to work for modular representations. One is based on Sergeev duality, which connects projective representation theory of the symmetric group and representation theory of the algebraic supergroup $Q(n)$ via appropriate Schur (super)algebras and Schur functors. The second approach follows the work of Grojnowski for classical affine and cyclotomic Hecke algebras and connects projective representation theory of symmetric groups in characteristic $p$ to the crystal graph of the basic module of the twisted affine Kac-Moody algebra of type $A_{p-1}^{(2)}$. The goal of this work is to connect the two approaches mentioned above and to obtain new branching results for projective representations of symmetric groups. This is achieved by developing the theory of lowering operators for the supergroup $Q(n)$ which is parallel to (although much more intricate than) the similar theory for $GL(n)$ developed by the first author. The theory of lowering operators for $GL(n)$ is a non-trivial generalization of Carter's work in characteristic zero, and it has received a lot of attention. So this part of our work might be of independent interest. One of the applications of lowering operators is to tensor products of irreducible $Q(n)$-modules with natural and dual natural modules, which leads to important special translation functors. We describe the socles and primitive vectors in such tensor products.
