Gluon Green functions free of Quantum fluctuations

This letter reports on how the Wilson flow technique can efficaciously kill the short-distance quantum fluctuations of 2- and 3-gluon Green functions, removes the $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ scale and destroys the transition from the confining non-perturbative to the asymptotically-free perturbative sector. After the Wilson flow, the behavior of the Green functions with momenta can be described in terms of the quasi-classical instanton background. The same behavior also occurs, before the Wilson flow, at low-momenta. This last result permits applications as, for instance, the detection of instanton phenomenological properties or a cheap lattice calibration.

On the zero crossing of the three-gluon vertex

We report on new results on the infrared behaviour of the three-gluon vertex in quenched Quantum Chormodynamics, obtained from large-volume lattice simulations. The main focus of our study is the appearance of the characteristic infrared feature known as 'zero crossing', the origin of which is intimately connected with the nonperturbative masslessness of the Faddeev-Popov ghost. The appearance of this effect is clearly visible in one of the two kinematic configurations analyzed, and its theoretical origin is discussed in the framework of Schwinger-Dyson equations. The effective coupling in the momentum subtraction scheme that corresponds to the three-gluon vertex is constructed, revealing the vanishing of the effective interaction at the exact location of the zero crossing.

mu-Squared Dependent Deviation of the Non Perturbative ZA,MOM from the True Axial Renormalisation Constant, Implied by Ward Identity

It is recalled why, as already stated in a previous paper, there seems to be an inconsistency in identifying the non perturbative ZA,MOM as the renormalisation of the axial current, or equivalently, in setting as normalisation condition that the renormalised vertex=1 at p^2 = mu^2 at some renormalisation scale mu, where p is the momentum in the legs. Indeed, unlike the vector case, the Ward-Takahashi (WT) identity for the axial current is shown to imply both the renormalisation scale independence of ZA and a mu2 dependence of ZA,MOM. This mu^2 dependence is simply related to certain invariants in the pseudoscalar vertex and can persist in the chiral limit due to the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry (pion pole). It is seen clearly in the mu^2 dependence of some lattice calculations of ZA,MOM/ZV,MOM near the chiral limit.

High statistics determination of the strong coupling constant in Taylor scheme and its OPE Wilson coefficient from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

This paper reports on the determination of $α_S$ from lattice simulations with 2+1+1 twisted-mass dynamical flavours {\it via} the computation of the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. A high-statistics sample of gauge configurations, used to evaluate the coupling from ghost and gluon propagators, allows for the appropriate update of previous results, now performing an improved analysis of data with reduced statistical errors and the systematical uncertainties under a better control.

The strong running coupling at $τ$ and $Z_0$ mass scales from lattice QCD

This letter reports on the first computation, from data obtained in lattice QCD with $u,d,s$ and $c$ quarks in the sea, of the running strong coupling via the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. We provide with estimates of $\ams(m_τ^2)$ and $\ams(m_Z^2)$ in very good agreement with experimental results. Including a dynamical c quark makes safer the needed running of $\ams$.

Three-gluon running coupling from lattice QCD at $N_f=2+1+1$: a consistency check of the OPE approach

We present a lattice calculation of the renormalized running coupling constant in symmetric (MOM) and asymmetric ($\widetilde{\rm MOM}$) momentum substraction schemes including $u$, $d$, $s$ and $c$ quarks in the sea. An Operator Product Expansion dominated by the dimension-two $\langle A^2\rangle$ condensate is used to fit the running of the coupling. We argue that the agreement in the predicted $\langle A^2\rangle$ condensate for both schemes is a strong support for the validity of the OPE approach and the effect of this non-gauge invariant condensate over the running of the strong coupling.

A first look at maximally twisted mass lattice QCD calculations at the physical point

In this contribution, a first look at simulations using maximally twisted mass Wilson fermions at the physical point is presented. A lattice action including clover and twisted mass terms is presented and the Monte Carlo histories of one run with two mass-degenerate flavours at a single lattice spacing are shown. Measurements from the light and heavy-light pseudoscalar sectors are compared to previous $N_f = 2$ results and their phenomenological values. Finally, the strategy for extending simulations to $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ is outlined.

A novel method for the physical scale setting on the lattice and its application to $N_f$=4 simulations

This letter reports on a new procedure for the lattice spacing setting that takes advantage of the very precise determination of the strong coupling in Taylor scheme. Although it can be applied for the physical scale setting with the experimental value of $Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}$ as an input, the procedure is particularly appropriate for relative "calibrations". The method is here applied for simulations with four degenerate light quarks in the sea and leads to prove that their physical scale is compatible with the same one for simulations with two light and two heavy flavours.

Lattice measurement of α_s with a realistic charm quark

We report on an estimate of α_s, renormalised in the MSbar scheme at the tau and Z^0 mass scales, by means of lattice QCD. Our major improvement compared to previous lattice calculations is that, for the first time, no perturbative treatment at the charm threshold has been required since we have used statistical samples of gluon fields built by incorporating the vacuum polarisation effects of u/d, s and c sea quarks. Extracting α_s in the Taylor scheme from the lattice measurement of the ghost-ghost-gluon vertex, we obtain α_s^{MSbar}(m^2_Z)=0.1200(14) and α_s^{MSbar}(m^2_tau)=0.339(13).

Testing the OPE Wilson coefficient for $A^2$ from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

Gluon and ghost propagators data, obtained in Landau gauge from lattice simulations with two light and two heavy dynamical quark flavours ($N_f$=2+1+1), are described here with a running formula including a four-loop perturbative expression and a nonperturbative OPE correction dominated by the local operator $A^2$. The Wilson coefficients and their variation as a function of the coupling constant are extracted from the numerical data and compared with the theoretical expressions that, after being properly renormalized, are known at ${\cal O}(α^4)$. As also $Λ_{\msbar}$ is rather well known for $N_f$=2+1+1, this allows for a precise consistency test of the OPE approach in the joint description of different observables.

Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$ from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

This paper is a first report on the determination of $Λ_{\msbar}$ from lattice simulations with 2+1+1 twisted-mass dynamical flavours {\it via} the computation of the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. We show this approach allows a very good control of the lattice artefacts and confirm the picture from previous works with quenched and ${\rm N}_f$=2 twisted-mass field configurations which prove the necessity to include non-perturbative power corrections in the description of the running. We provide with an estimate of $Λ_{\msbar}$ in very good agreement with experimental results. To our knowledge it is the first calculation with a dynamical charm quark which makes the running up to $α_s(M_Z)$ much safer.

On the leading OPE corrections to the ghost-gluon vertex and the Taylor theorem

This brief note is devoted to a study of genuine non-perturbative corrections to the Landau gauge ghost-gluon vertex in terms of the non-vanishing dimension-two gluon condensate. We pay special attention to the kinematical limit which the bare vertex takes for its tree-level expression at any perturbative order, according to the well-known Taylor theorem. Based on our OPE analysis, we also present a simple model for the vertex, in acceptable agreement with lattice data.

The Infrared Behaviour of the Pure Yang-Mills Green Functions

We review the infrared properties of the pure Yang-Mills correlators and discuss recent results concerning the two classes of low-momentum solutions for them reported in literature; i.e. decoupling and scaling solutions. We will mainly focuss on the Landau gauge and pay special attention to the results inferred from the analysis of the Dyson-Schwinger equations of the theory and from "{\it quenched}" lattice QCD. The results obtained from properly interplaying both approaches are strongly emphasized.

RI/MOM renormalization constants (N_f=4) and the strong coupling constant (N_f=2+1+1) from twisted-mass QCD

We study RI/MOM renormalization constants of bilinear quark operators for $N_f=4$ and the strong coupling constant for $N_f=2+1+1$ using Wilson twisted-mass fermions. We use the "egalitarian" method to remove H(4) hypercubic artifacts non-perturbatively, which enables us to study physical quantities in a wide range of momenta. We then apply OPE in studying the running behavior of $Z_q$ and $α_s$, from which we are able to extract the Landau gauge dimension-two gluon condensate $<A^2>$ which is of phenomenological interest.

Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ from twisted-mass lattice QCD at $N_f=2$

A non-perturbative calculation of the ghost-gluon running QCD coupling constant is performed using $N_f=2$ twisted-mass dynamical fermions. The extraction of $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ in the chiral limit reveals the presence of a non-perturbative OPE contribution that is assumed to be dominated by a dimension-two $\VEV{A^2}$ condensate. In this contest a novel method for calibrating the lattice spacing in lattice simulations is presented.

Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and $Λ_{\overline {\rm MS}}$ from twisted-mass lattice QCD at Nf=2

We present results concerning the non-perturbative evaluation of the ghost-gluon running QCD coupling constant from $N_f=2$ twisted-mass lattice calculations. A novel method for calibrating the lattice spacing, independent of the string tension and hadron spectrum is presented with results in agreement with previous estimates. The value of $Λ_{\overline{MS}}$ is computed from the running of the QCD coupling only after extrapolating to zero dynamical quark mass and after removing a non-perturbative OPE contribution that is assumed to be dominated by the dimension-two $\VEV{A^2}$ gluon condensate. The effect due to the dynamical quark mass in the determination of $\Lams$ is discussed.

Quark pseudoscalar vertex and quark mass function with clover fermions : spontaneous symmetry breaking, OPE, symmetry restoration at small volume

We study the quark mass function on hypercubic lattices, in a large range of physical volumes and cutoffs. To avoid the very large Wilson term artefact, we exploit the relation between the quark mass function and the pseudoscalar vertex in the continuum. We extrapolate to the chiral limit. In function of the physical volume, we observe a striking discontinuity in the properties of chiral extrapolation around a physical volume $L_c 6 (GeV}^{-1}=1.2 fm$. It is present in the quark mass function, which collapses to zero, as well as in the pion mass and the quark condensate as directly calculated from the pseudoscalar correlator. It is strongly reminiscent of the phenomenon of chiral symmetry restoration observed by Neuberger and Narayanan at $N_C=\infty$ around the same physical length. In the case of spontaneous symmetry breaking, we confirm that the OPE of the quark mass function, involving the quark condensate, is not operative at the available momenta, even taking into account the unusually large high order corrections to the Wilson coefficient calculated by Chetyrkin and Maier ; the gap remains large, around a factor 2, even at the largest momenta available to us (p \simeg GeV)

preprint2010arXiv

Renormalisation of quark propagators from twisted-mass lattice QCD at $N_f$=2

We present results concerning the non-perturbative evaluation of the renormalisation constant for the quark field, $Z_q$, from lattice simulations with twisted mass quarks and three values of the lattice spacing. We use the RI'-MOM scheme. $Z_q$ has very large lattice spacing artefacts; it is considered here as a test bed to elaborate accurate methods which will be used for other renormalisation constants. We recall and develop the non-perturbative correction methods and propose tools to test the quality of the correction. These tests are also applied to the perturbative correction method. We check that the lattice spacing artefacts scale indeed as $a^2p^2$. We then study the running of $Z_q$ with particular attention to the non-perturbative effects, presumably dominated by the dimension-two gluon condensate $\VEV{A^2}$ in Landau gauge. We show indeed that this effect is present, and not small. We check its scaling in physical units confirming that it is a continuum effect. It gives a $\sim 4%$ contribution at 2 GeV. Different variants are used in order to test the reliability of our result and estimate the systematic uncertainties. Finally combining all our results and using the known Wilson coefficient of $\VEV{A^2}$ we find $g^2(μ^2) \VEV{A^2}_{μ^2\; CM} = 2.01(11)(^{+0.61}_{- 0.73}) \;\mathrm {GeV}^2$ at $μ=10\, \mathrm{GeV}$, in fair agreement within uncertainties with the value indepently extracted from the strong coupling constant.

The low-momentum ghost dressing function and the gluon mass

We study the low-momentum ghost propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in Landau gauge, assuming for the truncation a constant ghost-gluon vertex, as it is extensively done, and a simple model for a massive gluon propagator. Then, regular DSE solutions (the zero-momentum ghost dressing function not diverging) appear to emerge and we show the ghost propagator to be described by an asymptotic expression reliable up to the order ${\cal O}(q^2)$. That expression, depending on the gluon mass and the zero-momentum Taylor-scheme effective charge, is proven to fit pretty well the low-momentum ghost propagator obtained through big-volume lattice simulations.

A Ghost Story II: Ghosts, Gluons and the Gluon condensate beyond the IR of QCD

Beyond the deep IR, the analysis of ghost and gluon propagators still keeps very interesting non-perturbative information. The Taylor-scheme coupling can be computed and applied to obtain the $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ parameter from Landau gauge lattice simulations. Furthermore, a dimension-two gluon condensate, that can be understood in the instanton liquid model, plays an important role in the game.

A Ghost Story: Ghosts and Gluons in the IR regime of QCD

We discuss the different methods to obtain reliable informations about the deep infra-red behaviour of the gluon and ghost Green functions in QCD. We argue that a clever combination of analytical inputs and numerical ones is necessary. We illustrate this statement about the distinction between two classes of solutions of the ghost propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (GPDSE). We conclude that the solution II ("decoupling") with a finite renormalised ghost dressing function at zero momentum is strongly favored by lattice QCD, We derive a method to solve numerically the GPDSE using lattice inputs concerning the gluon propagator. We derive an analytical small momentum expansion of the Ghost dressing function. We prove from the large cut-off behaviour of the ghost propagator renormalisation constant, $\widetilde Z_3$, that the bare ghost dressing function is infinite at the infinite cut-off limit.

Gribov's horizon and the ghost dressing function

We study a relation recently derived by K. Kondo at zero momentum between the Zwanziger's horizon function, the ghost dressing function and Kugo's functions $u$ and $w$. We agree with this result as far as bare quantities are considered. However, assuming the validity of the horizon gap equation, we argue that the solution $w(0)=0$ is not acceptable since it would lead to a vanishing renormalised ghost dressing function. On the contrary, when the cut-off goes to infinity, $u(0) \to \infty$, $w(0) \to -\infty$ such that $u(0)+w(0) \to -1$. Furthermore $w$ and $u$ are not multiplicatively renormalisable. Relaxing the gap equation allows $w(0)=0$ with $u(0) \to -1$. In both cases the bare ghost dressing function, $F(0,Λ)$, goes logarithmically to infinity at infinite cut-off. We show that, although the lattice results provide bare results not so different from the $F(0,Λ)=3$ solution, this is an accident due to the fact that the lattice cut-offs lie in the range 1-3 GeV$^{-1}$. We show that the renormalised ghost dressing function should be finite and non-zero at zero momentum and can be reliably estimated on the lattice up to powers of the lattice spacing ; from published data on a $80^4$ lattice at $β=5.7$ we obtain $F_R(0,μ=1.5$ GeV)$\simeq 2.2$.

Light Meson Physics from Maximally Twisted Mass Lattice QCD

We present a comprehensive investigation of light meson physics using maximally twisted mass fermions for two mass-degenerate quark flavours. By employing four values of the lattice spacing, spatial lattice extents ranging from 2.0 fm to 2.5 fm and pseudo scalar masses in the range 280 MeV to 650 MeV we control the major systematic effects of our calculation. This enables us to confront our data with chiral perturbation theory and extract low energy constants of the effective chiral Lagrangian and derived quantities, such as the light quark mass, with high precision.

Dynamical Twisted Mass Fermions with Light Quarks: Simulation and Analysis Details

In a recent paper [hep-lat/0701012] we presented precise lattice QCD results of our European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC). They were obtained by employing two mass-degenerate flavours of twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. In the present paper we give details on our simulations and the computation of physical observables. In particular, we discuss the problem of tuning to maximal twist, the techniques we have used to compute correlators and error estimates. In addition, we provide more information on the algorithm used, the autocorrelation times and scale determination, the evaluation of disconnected contributions and the description of our data by means of chiral perturbation theory formulae.

Ghost-gluon running coupling, power corrections and the determination of $Λ_{\bar {\rm MS}}$

We compute a formula including OPE power corrections to describe the running of a QCD coupling non-perturbatively defined through the ghost and gluon dressing functions. This turns out to be rather accurate. We propose the ``{\it plateau}''-procedure to compute $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$ from the lattice computation of the running coupling constant. We show a good agreement between the different methods which have been used to estimate $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}^{N_f=0}$. We argue that $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$ or the strong coupling constant computed with different lattice spacings may be used to estimate the lattice spacing ratio.

IR finiteness of the ghost dressing function from numerical resolution of the ghost SD equation

We solve numerically the Schwinger-Dyson (SD hereafter) ghost equation in the Landau gauge for a given gluon propagator finite at k=0 (alpha_gluon=1) and with the usual assumption of constancy of the ghost-gluon vertex ; we show that there exist two possible types of ghost dressing function solutions, as we have previously inferred from analytical considerations : one singular at zero momentum, satisfying the familiar relation alpha_gluon+2 alpha_ghost=0 between the infrared exponents of the gluon and ghost dressing functions(in short, respectively alpha_G and alpha_F) and having therefore alpha_ghost=-1/2, and another which is finite at the origin (alpha_ghost=0), which violates the relation. It is most important that the type of solution which is realized depends on the value of the coupling constant. There are regular ones for any coupling below some value, while there is only one singular solution, obtained only at a critical value of the coupling. For all momenta k<1.5 GeV where they can be trusted, our lattice data exclude neatly the singular one, and agree very well with the regular solution we obtain at a coupling constant compatible with the bare lattice value.

On the IR behaviour of the Landau-gauge ghost propagator

We examine analytically the ghost propagator Dyson-Schwinger Equation (DSE) in the deep IR regime and prove that a finite ghost dressing function at vanishing momentum is an alternative solution (solution II) to the usually assumed divergent one (solution I). We furthermore find that the Slavnov-Taylor identities discriminate between these two classes of solutions and strongly support the solution II. The latter turns out to be also preferred by lattice simulations within numerical uncertainties.

Divergent IR gluon propagator from Ward-Slavnov-Taylor identities?

We exploit the Ward-Slavnov-Taylor identity relating the 3-gluons to the ghost-gluon vertices to conclude either that the ghost dressing function is finite and non vanishing at zero momentum while the gluon propagator diverges (although it may do so weakly enough not to be in contradiction with current lattice data) or that the 3-gluons vertex is non-regular when one momentum goes to zero. We stress that those results should be kept in mind when one studies the Infrared properties of the ghost and gluon propagators, for example by means of Dyson-Schwinger equations.

Dynamical Twisted Mass Fermions with Light Quarks

We present results of dynamical simulations with 2 flavours of degenerate Wilson twisted mass quarks at maximal twist in the range of pseudo scalar masses from 300 to 550 MeV. The simulations are performed at one value of the lattice spacing a \lesssim 0.1 fm. In order to have O(a) improvement and aiming at small residual cutoff effects, the theory is tuned to maximal twist by requiring the vanishing of the untwisted quark mass. Precise results for the pseudo scalar decay constant and the pseudo scalar mass are confronted with chiral perturbation theory predictions and the low energy constants F, \bar{l}_3 and \bar{l}_4 are evaluated with small statistical errors.

Light quark masses and pseudoscalar decay constants from Nf=2 Lattice QCD with twisted mass fermions

We present the results of a lattice QCD calculation of the average up-down and strange quark masses and of the light meson pseudoscalar decay constants with Nf=2 dynamical fermions. The simulation is carried out at a single value of the lattice spacing with the twisted mass fermionic action at maximal twist, which guarantees automatic O(a)-improvement of the physical quantities. Quark masses are renormalized by implementing the non-perturbative RI-MOM renormalization procedure. Our results for the light quark masses are m_ud^{msbar}(2 GeV)= 3.85 +- 0.12 +- 0.40 MeV, m_s^{msbar}(2 GeV) = 105 +- 3 +- 9 MeV and m_s/m_ud = 27.3 +- 0.3 +- 1.2. We also obtain fK = 161.7 +- 1.2 +- 3.1 MeV and the ratio fK/fpi=1.227 +- 0.009 +- 0.024. From this ratio, by using the experimental determination of Gamma(K-> mu nu (gamma))/Gamma(pi -> mu nu (gamma)) and the average value of |Vud| from nuclear beta decays, we obtain |Vus|=0.2192(5)(45), in agreement with the determination from Kl3 decays and the unitarity constraint.

Exploring twisted mass Lattice QCD with the Clover term

It has been shown that in the twisted mass formulation of Lattice QCD at maximal twist large cutoff effects are generated when the quark mass becomes of O(a Lambda_QCD^2). In general, these effects can be suppressed in two ways: either by choosing the critical quark mass in an "optimal way", or by adding the Clover term to the twisted action. We investigate the second option by performing a quenched lattice QCD simulation with twisted Clover fermions and pion masses as low as 280 MeV. We show that the Clover term is indeed efficient in reducing the large cutoff effects. In particular, the so-called bending phenomenon observed in the determination of the pion decay constant is cured in this way. In addition, by using maximally twisted Clover fermions, we provide a non-perturbative determination of the vector current renormalization constant Z_V as well as of the non-perturbatively renormalized light quark masses. Finally, we calculate the connected contribution to the charged-neutral pseudoscalar meson mass splitting, finding that the introduction of the Clover term in the twisted action is also beneficial, in the quenched approximation, in reducing cutoff effects related to the isospin symmetry breaking at finite lattice spacing.

Is the QCD ghost dressing function finite at zero momentum ?

We show that a finite non-vanishing ghost dressing function at zero momentum satisfies the scaling properties of the ghost propagator Schwinger-Dyson equation. This kind of Schwinger-Dyson solutions may well agree with lattice data and provides an interesting alternative to the widely spread claim that the gluon dressing function behaves like the inverse squared ghost dressing function, a claim which is at odds with lattice data. We demonstrate that, if the ghost dressing function is less singular than any power of $p$, it must be finite non-vanishing at zero momentum: any logarithmic behaviour is for instance excluded. We add some remarks about coupled Schwinger-Dyson analyses.

Non-perturbative Power Corrections to Ghost and Gluon Propagators

We study the dominant non-perturbative power corrections to the ghost and gluon propagators in Landau gauge pure Yang-Mills theory using OPE and lattice simulations. The leading order Wilson coefficients are proven to be the same for both propagators. The ratio of the ghost and gluon propagators is thus free from this dominant power correction. Indeed, a purely perturbative fit of this ratio gives smaller value ($\simeq 270$MeV) of $Λ_{\ms}$ than the one obtained from the propagators separately($\simeq 320$MeV). This argues in favour of significant non-perturbative $\sim 1/q^2$ power corrections in the ghost and gluon propagators. We check the self-consistency of the method.

Asymptotic behavior of the ghost propagator in SU3 lattice gauge theory

We study the asymptotic behavior of the ghost propagator in the quenched SU(3) lattice gauge theory with Wilson action. The study is performed on lattices with a physical volume fixed around 1.6 fm and different lattice spacings: 0.100 fm, 0.070 fm and 0.055 fm. We implement an efficient algorithm for computing the Faddeev-Popov operator on the lattice. We are able to extrapolate the lattice data for the ghost propagator towards the continuum and to show that the extrapolated data on each lattice can be described up to four-loop perturbation theory from 2.0 GeV to 6.0 GeV. The three-loop values are consistent with those extracted from previous perturbative studies of the gluon propagator. However the effective $Λ_{\ms}$ scale which reproduces the data does depend strongly upon the order of perturbation theory and on the renormalization scheme used in the parametrization. We show how the truncation of the perturbative series can account for the magnitude of the dependency in this energy range. The contribution of non-perturbative corrections will be discussed elsewhere.

Non-perturbatively renormalised light quark masses from a lattice simulation with N_f=2

We present results for the light quark masses obtained from a lattice QCD simulation with N_f=2 degenerate Wilson dynamical quark flavours. The sea quark masses of our lattice, of spacing a ~ 0.06 fm, are relatively heavy, i.e., they cover the range corresponding to 0.60 <~ M_P/M_V <~ 0.75. After implementing the non-perturbative RI-MOM method to renormalise quark masses, we obtain m_{ud}^{MS}(2 GeV)=4.3 +- 0.4^{+1.1}_{-0} MeV, and m_s^{MS}(2 GeV)=101 +- 8^{+25}_{-0} MeV, which are about 15% larger than they would be if renormalised perturbatively. In addition, we show that the above results are compatible with those obtained in a quenched simulation with a similar lattice.

Non-perturbatively Renormalized Light Quark Masses with Two Dynamical Fermions

We present the results of a partially quenched lattice QCD calculation of light quark masses with $N_f=2$ degenerate dynamical flavors. Numerical simulations are carried out using the plaquette gauge action and the Wilson quark action at $β= 5.8$ ($a^{-1} \simeq 3.2\gev$). The spatial extension of the $24^3 \times 48$ lattice is about 1.5 fm. Configurations have been generated at four values of the sea quark masses, for which the ratio of pseudoscalar over vector meson masses is in the range $M_P/M_V \simeq 0.60 ÷0.75$. An important feature of the present study is the use of non-perturbative renormalization, performed with the $\ri$ method. The effects of dynamical sea quarks in the determination of light quark masses have been investigated by performing a quenched calculation on a similar lattice. Our results for the average up-down and strange quark masses are $m_{ud}^{MS} (2\gev) = 4.3(4) (^{+1.1}_{-0.4})\mev$ and $m_s^{MS}(2\gev)=101(8)(^{+25}_{-9}) \mev$. These values are larger than those obtained by evaluating the quark mass renormalization constants with one-loop (boosted) perturbation theory. Our results for the light quark masses are compatible with those obtained in the quenched simulation. No significant sea quark effects are seen, at the values of sea quark masses used in the present study.

Pionic couplings (g^ and g~) in the static heavy quark limit

The couplings between the soft pion and the doublet of heavy-light mesons are basic parameters of the ChPT approach to the heavy-light systems. We compute the unquenched (Nf=2) values of two such couplings in the static heavy quark limit: (1) g^, coupling to the lowest doublet of heavy-light mesons, and (2) g~, coupling to the first orbital excitations. A brief description of the calculation together with a short discussion of the results is presented.

Matrix elements of DI=3/2 K-->pi pi decays

We present a numerical computation of matrix elements of DI=3/2 K-->pi pi decays by using Wilson fermions. In order to extrapolate to the physical point we work at unphysical kinematics and we resort to Chiral Perturbation Theory at the next-to-leading order. In particular we explain the case of the electroweak penguins O_{7,8} which can contribute significantly in the theoretical prediction of epsilon'/epsilon. The study is done at beta=6.0 on a 24^3x64 lattice.

Quark propagator and vertex: systematic corrections of hypercubic artifacts from lattice simulations

This is the first part of a study of the quark propagator and the vertex function of the vector current on the lattice in the Landau gauge and using both Wilson-clover and overlap actions. In order to be able to identify lattice artifacts and to reach large momenta we use a range of lattice spacings. The lattice artifacts turn out to be exceedingly large in this study. We present a new and very efficient method to eliminate the hypercubic (anisotropy) artifacts based on a systematic expansion on hypercubic invariants which are not SO(4) invariant. A simpler version of this method has been used in previous works. This method is shown to be significantly more efficient than the popular ``democratic'' methods. It can of course be applied to the lattice simulations of many other physical quantities. The analysis indicates a hierarchy in the size of hypercubic artifacts: overlap larger than clover and propagator larger than vertex function. This pleads for the combined study of propagators and vertex functions via Ward identities.

A transparent expression of the A^2-Condensate's renormalisation

We give a more transparent understanding of the vacuum expectation value of the renormalised local operator A^2 by relating it to the gluon propagator integrated over the momentum. The quadratically divergent perturbative contribution is subtracted and the remainder, dominantly due to the O(1/p^2) correction to the perturbative propagator at large p^2 is logarithmically divergent. This provides a transparent derivation of the fact that this O(1/p^2) term is related to the vacuum expectation value of the local A^2 operator and confirms a previous claim based on the operator product expansion (OPE) of the gluon propagator. At leading logarithms the agreement is quantitative, with a standard running factor, between the local A^2 condensate renormalised as described above and the one renormalised in the OPE context.

An Instanton Picture O.P.E. <A^2> Condensate?

Gluon two- and three-point Green Functions computed in Landau gauge from the lattice show the existence of power corrections to the purely perturbative expressions, that can be explained through an Operator Product Expansion as the influence of a non gauge invariant mass dimension two condensate. The relationship of this condensate with topological properties of QCD, namely instantons, will be studied, giving a first estimate of the contribution of instantons to this condensate based in the direct lattice measure, after a cooling process, of the instanton liquid properties.

First lattice QCD estimate of the g_{D^* D pi} coupling

We present the results of the first lattice QCD study of the strong coupling g_{D^* D pi}. From our simulations in the quenched approximation, we obtain g_{D^* D pi} = 18.8 +/- 2.3^{+1.1}_{-2.0} and hat(g)_c = 0.67 +/- 0.08^{+0.04}_{-0.06}. Whereas previous theoretical studies gave different predictions, our result favours a large value for hat(g)_c. It agrees very well with the recent experimental value by CLEO. hat(g) varies very little with the heavy mass and we find in the infinite mass limit hat(g)_infinity = 0.69(18).

Kaon Weak Matrix Elements with Wilson Fermions

We present results of several numerical studies with Wilson fermions relevant for kaon physics. We compute the B_K parameter by using two different methods and extrapolate to the continuum limit. Our preliminary result is B_K(2 GeV)=0.66(7). Delta I=3/2 K->pi pi matrix elements are obtained by using the next-to-leading order expressions derived in chiral perturbation theory in which the low energy constants are determined by the lattice results computed at unphysical kinematics. From the simulation at beta=6.0 our (preliminary) results read: <pi pi|O_7(2 GeV)|K>_{I=2}=0.14(1)(1) GeV^3 and <pi pi|O_8(2GeV)|K>_{I=2}=0.69(6)(6) GeV^3.

O.P.E. and Power Corrections to the QCD coupling constant

Lattice data seems to show that power corrections should be convoked to describe appropriately the transition of the QCD coupling constant running from U.V. to I.R. domains. Those power corrections for the Landau-gauge MOM coupling constant in a pure Yang-Mills theory (N_f=0) are analysed in terms of Operator Product Expansion (O.P.E.) of two- and three-point Green functions, the gluon condensate <A^2> emerging from this study. The semi-classical picture given by instantons can be also used to look for into the nature of the power corrections and gluon condensate.

OPE and Powers corrections on the QCD coupling constant

The running coupling constant can be estimated by computing gluon two- and three-point Green functions from the lattice. Computing in lattice implies working in a fixed gauge sector (Landau). An source of systematic uncertainty is then the contribution of non gauge-invariant condensates, as $<A^2 >$, generating power corrections that might still be important at very high energies. We study the impact of this gluon condensate on the analysis of gluon propagator and vertex lattice data and on the estimate of $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$. We finally try a qualitative description of this gluon condensate through the instanton picture

Asymptotic behaviour of the gluon propagator from lattice QCD

We study the flavorless gluon propagator in the Landau gauge from high statistics lattice calculations. Hypercubic artifacts are efficiently eliminated by taking the $\sum p_μ^4 \to 0$ limit. The propagator is fitted to the three-loops perturbative formula in an energy window ranging form $\sim$ 2.5 GeV up to $\sim$ 5.5 GeV. $α_s$ is extracted from the best fit in a continuous set of renormalisation schemes. The fits are very good, with a $χ^2$ per d.o.f smaller than 1. We propose a more stringent test of asymptotic scaling based on scheme independence of the resulting $Λ_{\bar MS}$. This method shows that asymptotic scaling at three loops is not reached by the gluon propagator although we use rather large energies. We are only able to obtain an effective flavorless three-loops estimate $Λ_{\bar MS}^{(3)}= 353 \pm 2 ^{+25}_{-10} $ MeV. We argue that the real asymptotic value for $Λ_{\bar MS}$ should plausibly be smaller.

We study the energy shift of two pion in a finite volume both in the I=0 and I=2 channels. We explain a method to avoid the Goldstone pole contamination in the computation of renormalization constants for (delta I=3/2) operators. Matrix elements of (delta S=2) operators with Wilson fermions

We test the recent proposal of using the Ward identities to compute the K0-K0bar mixing amplitude with Wilson fermions, without the problem of spurious lattice subtractions. In addition, from the standard study of the complete set of (delta S=2) operators, we quote the following (preliminary) results (in the MS(NDR) scheme): Bk(2 GeV)=0.70(10), < O7^{3/2}>_{K->pi pi} = 0.10(2)(1) GeV^3, < O8^{3/2}>_{K->pi pi} = 0.49(6)(0) GeV^3.

Preliminaries on a Lattice Analysis of The Pion Light-cone Wave function: a Partonic Signal?

We present the first attempt of a new method to compute the pion light-cone wave function (LCWF) on the lattice. We compute the matrix element between the pion and the vacuum of a non-local operator: the propagator of a ``scalar quark'' (named for short "squark"). A theoretical analysis shows that for some kinematical conditions (energetic pion and hard squark) this matrix element depends dominantly on the LCWF $Φ_π(u), u\in [0,1]$. On the lattice, the discretization of the parton momenta imposes further constraints on the pion momentum. The two-point Green functions made of squark-quark and squark-squark fields show hadron-like bound-state behaviour and verify the standard energy spectrum. We show some indications that during a short time, after being created, the system of the spectator quark and the squark behave like partons, before they form a hadron-like bound state. This short time is the place where the partonic wave function has to be looked for.

Preliminary Calculation of $α_s$ from Green Functions with Dynamical Quarks

We present preliminary results on the computation of the QCD running coupling constant in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme and Landau gauge with two flavours of dynamical Wilson quarks. Gluon momenta range up to about 7 GeV ($β=$ 5.6, 5.8 and 6.0) with a constant dynamical-quark mass. This range already allows to exhibit some evidence for a sizable $1/μ^2$ correction to the asymptotic behaviour, as in the quenched approximation, although a fit without power corrections is still possible with a reasonable $χ^2$. Following the conclusions of our quenched study, we take into account $1/μ^2$ correction to the asymptotic behaviour. We find $Λ_{\rm \bar{MS}}^{N_f=2} = 264(27) {\rm MeV} \times [{a^{-1}(5.6,0.1560)}/{2.19 {\rm GeV}}] $, which leads to $α_s(M_Z) = 0.113(3)(4)$. The latter result has to be taken as a preliminary indication rather than a real prediction in view of the systematic errors still to be controlled. Still, being two sigmas below the experimental result makes it very encouraging.

Testing Landau gauge OPE on the Lattice with a $<A^2>$ Condensate

Using the operator product expansion we show that the $O(1/p^2)$ correction to the perturbative expressions for the gluon propagator and the strong coupling constant resulting from lattice simulations in the Landau gauge are due to a non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of the operator $A^μA_μ$. This is done using the recently published Wilson coefficients of the identity operator computed to third order, and the subdominant Wilson coefficient computed in this paper to the leading logarithm. As a test of the applicability of OPE we compare the $<A^μA_μ>$ estimated from the gluon propagator and the one from the coupling constant in the flavourless case. Both agree within the statistical uncertainty: $\sqrt{< A^μA_μ>} \simeq 1.64(15)$ GeV. Simultaneously we fit $\Lams = $ 233(28) MeV in perfect agreement with previous lattice estimates. When the leading coefficients are only expanded to two loops, the two estimates of the condensate differ drastically. As a consequence we insist that OPE can be applied in predicting physical quantities only if the Wilson coefficients are computed to a high enough perturbative order.

Unquenched calculation of alpha_s from Green functions: progress report

We present preliminary results on the computation of the QCD running coupling constant in the MOM_tilde scheme and Landau gauge with two flavours of dynamical Wilson quarks. Gluon momenta range up to about 7 GeV (beta=5.6, 5.8 and 6.0) with a constant dynamical quark mass. This range already allows to exhibit some evidence for a sizeable 1/mu^2 correction to the asymptotic behaviour, as in the quenched approximation. We find Lambda_MS^(N_f=2) = 264(27) MeV x [a^{-1}(5.6,0.1560)/(2.19 GeV)], which leads to alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.113(3)(4). In view of the systematics error to be controlled, this encouraging result is more a preliminary indication than a real prediction.

Consistent OPE Description of Gluon Two- and Three-point Green Function?

We perform an OPE analysis of the flavorless non-perturbative gluon propagator and the symmetric three-gluon vertex in the Landau gauge. The first subdominant operator is $A_μA^μ$ which can condensate in the Landau gauge ``vacuum'' although being a non-gauge invariant operator. We neglect all higher dimension operators. Then the gluon propagator and the symmetric three gluon vertex only depend on one common unknown condensate. We propose a consistency check from lattice data. At two loops for the leading coefficient and with $1/p^2$ corrections at tree-level order the two fitted values for the condensate do not agree. At three loops we argue that the today unknown $β_2^{\rm MOM}$ should be equal to $1.5(3)\times β_2^{\widetilde{\rm MOM}}=7400(1500)$ to fulfill the OPE relation. Inclusion of the power corrections' anomalous dimensions should improve further the agreement. We show that these techniques cannot be applied to the asymmetric three gluon vertex with one vanishing momentum.

Lattice calculation of $1/p^2$ corrections to $α_s$ and of $Λ_{\rm {QCD}}$ in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme

We report on very strong evidence of the occurrence of power terms in $\as(p)$, the QCD running coupling constant in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme, by analyzing non-perturbative measurements from the lattice three-gluon vertex between 2.0 and 10.0 GeV at zero flavor. While putting forward the caveat that this definition of the coupling is a gauge dependent one, the general relevance of such an occurrence is discussed. We fit $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}^{(n_f=0)}= 237 \pm 3 ^{+ 0}_{-10}$ MeV in perfect agreement with the result obtained by the ALPHA group with a totally different method. The power correction to $\as(p)$ is fitted to $(0.63\pm 0.03 ^{+ 0.0}_{- 0.13}) {\rm GeV}^2/p^2$.

A new mechanism of mass protection for fermions

We present a way of protecting a Dirac fermion interacting with a scalar (Higgs) field from getting a mass from the vacuum. It is obtained through an implementation of translational symmetry when the theory is formulated with a momentum cutoff, which forbids the usual Yukawa term. We consider that this mechanism can help to understand the smallness of neutrino masses without a tuning of the Yukawa coupling. The prohibition of the Yukawa term for the neutrino forbids at the same time a gauge coupling between the right-handed electron and neutrino. We prove that this mechanism can be implemented on the lattice.

Asymptotic scaling of the gluon propagtor on the lattice

We pursue the study of the high energy behaviour of the gluon propagator on the lattice in the Landau gauge in the flavorless case (n_f=0). It was shown in a precedin g paper that the gluon propagator did not reach three-loop asymptotic scaling at an energy scale as high as 5 GeV. Our present high statistics analysis includes also a simulation at $β=6.8$ ($a\simeq 0.03$ fm), which allows to reach $μ\simeq 10$ GeV. Special care has been devoted to the finite lattice-spacing artifacts as well as to the finite volume effects, the latter being acute at $β=6.8$ where the volume is bounded by technical limits. Our main conclusion is a strong evidence that the gluon propagator has reached three-loop asymptotic scaling, at $μ$ ranging from 5.6 GeV to 9.5 GeV. We buttress up this conclusion on several demanding criteria of asymptoticity, including scheme independence. Our fit in the 5.6 GeV to 9.5 GeV window yields $Λ^{\bar{\rm MS}} = 319 \pm 14 ^{+10}_{-20}$ MeV, in good agreement with our previous result, $Λ^{\bar{\rm MS}} = 295 \pm 20 $ MeV, obtained from the three gluon vertex, but it is significantly above the Schrödinger functional method estimate : $238 \pm 19$ MeV. The latter difference is not understood. Confirming our previous paper, we show that a fourth loop is necessary to fit the whole ($2.8 ÷9.5$) GeV energy window.

We end-up with Λ_{\bar{\rm{MS}}} = 318(12)(5) MeV and 292(5)(15) MeV respectively for these two methods, compatible which each other but significantly above the Schrodinger method estimate.

Phase-diagram and quasiparticles of a lattice SU(2) scalar-fermion model in (2+1) dimensions

The phase diagram at zero temperature of a lattice SU(2) scalar-fermion model in (2+1) dimensions is studied numerically and with Mean-Field methods. Special attention is devoted to the strong coupling regime. We have developed a new method to adaptate the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm to the O(3) non-linear $σ$ model constraint. The charged excitations in the various phases are studied at the Mean-Field lev el. Bound states of two charged fermions are found in a strongly coupled {\it paramagnetic} phase. Three-loop beta function and non-perturbative $α_s$ in asymmetric momentum scheme

We present high statistics lattice results for α_s in the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory without quark, compare with the three-loop running and extract the value of the corresponding Λ_\msbar parameter. Lattice calculation of $α_s$ in momentum scheme

We compute the flavorless running coupling constant of QCD from the three gluon vertex in the (regularisation independent) momentum subtraction renormalisation scheme. This is performed on the lattice with high statistics. The expected color dependence of the Green functions is verified. There are significant $O(a^2μ^2)$ effects which can be consistently controlled. Scaling is demonstrated when the renormalisation scale is varied between 2.1 GeV and 3.85 GeV. Scaling when the lattice spacing is varied is very well satisfied. The resulting flavorless conventional two loop $Λ^{(c)}_{\bar{MS}}$ is estimated to be, respectively for the MOM and $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme, 361(6) MeV and 345(6) MeV, while the three loop results are, depending on $β_2: Λ^{(3)}_{\bar{MS}} = (412 - 59 \frac{β_2} {β_{2, \bar{MS}}} \pm 6 MeV) $ and $Λ^{(3)}_{\bar{MS}} = (382- 46\frac{β_2} {β_{2, \bar{MS}}}\pm 5 MeV) $. Non-perturbatively Improved Heavy-Light Mesons: Masses and Decay Constants

We present a study of the heavy-light spectrum and of the D- and B-meson decay constants. The results wer e obtained in the quenched approximation, by using the non-perturbatively improved Clover lattice action at beta=6.2, with a sample of 100 configurations, on a 24^3 x 64 lattice. After a careful analysis of th e systematic errors present in the extraction of the physical results, by assuming quite conservative discretization errors, we find f_Ds=231 +/- 12^{+6}_{-1} MeV, f_D = 211 +/- 14^{+0}_{-12} MeV, f_Ds/f_D=1.10(2), f_Bs = 204 +/- 16^{+28}_{-0} MeV, f_B = 179 +/- 18^{+26}_{-9} MeV, f_Bs/f_B=1.14(3)^{+0}_{-1}. Non-perturbatively Renormalized Light-Quark Masses with the Alpha Action

We have computed the light quark masses using the O(a^2) improved Alpha action, in the quenched approximation. The renormalized masses have been obtained non-perturbatively. By eliminating the systematic error coming from the truncation of the perturbative series, our procedure removes the discrepancies, observed in previous calculations, between the results obtained using the vector and the axial-vector Ward identities. It also gives values of the quark masses larger than those obtained by computing the renormalization constants using (boosted) perturbation theory. Our main results, in the RI (MOM) scheme and at a renormalization scale μ=2 GeV, are m^{RI}_s= 138(15) MeV and m^{RI}_l= 5.6(5) MeV, where m^{RI}_s is the mass of the strange quark and m^{RI}_l=(m^{RI}_u+m^{RI}_d)/2 the average mass of the up-down quarks. From these results, which have been obtained non-perturbatively, by using continuum perturbation theory we derive the \bar{MS} masses, at the same scale, and the renormalization group invariant (m^{RGI}) masses. We find m^{NLO \bar{MS}}_s= 121(13)$ MeV and m^{NLO\bar{MS}}_l= 4.9(4) MeV at the next-to-leading order; m^{N^2LO \bar{MS}}_s= 111(12) MeV, m^{N^2LO \bar{MS}}_l= 4.5(4) MeV, m_s^{RGI}= 177(19) MeV and m^{RGI}_l= 7.2(6) MeV at the next-to-next-to-leading order.

The fermion doublers are made massive by a strong Wilson-Yukawa coupling, but in contrast with the standard formulation of these models, in which the light fermion spectrum was found to be massive and vectorlike, we find massless undoubled fermions with chiral quantum numbers at finite lattice spacing. When the global symmetry is gauged, this model is expected to give rise to a chiral gauge theory.

A Rigourous Treatment of the Lattice Renormalization Problem of F_B

The $B$-meson decay constant can be measured on the lattice using a $1/m_b$ expansion. To relate the physical quantity to Monte Carlo data one has to know the renormalization coefficient, $Z$, between the lattice operators and their continuum counterparts. We come back to this computation to resolve discrepancies found in previous calculations. We define and discuss in detail the renormalization procedure that allows the (perturbative) computation of $Z$. Comparing the one-loop calculations in the effective Lagrangian approach with the direct two-loop calculation of the two-point $B$-meson correlator in the limit of large $b$-quark mass, we prove that the two schemes give consistent results to order $α_s$. We show that there is, however, a renormalization prescription ambiguity that can have sizeable numerical consequences. This ambiguity can be resolved in the framework of an $O(a)$ improved calculation, and we describe the correct prescription in that case. Finally we give the numerical values of $Z$ that correspond to the different types of lattice approximations discussed in the paper.
