Emergence of pion parton distributions

Supposing only that there is an effective charge which defines an evolution scheme for parton distribution functions (DFs) that is all-orders exact, strict lower and upper bounds on all Mellin moments of the valence-quark DFs of pion-like systems are derived. Exploiting contemporary results from numerical simulations of lattice-regularised quantum chromodynamics (QCD) that are consistent with these bounds, parameter-free predictions for pion valence, glue, and sea DFs are obtained. The form of the valence-quark DF at large values of the light-front momentum fraction is consistent with predictions derived using the QCD-prescribed behaviour of the pion wave function.

Concerning pion parton distributions

Analyses of the pion valence-quark distribution function (DF), ${u}^π(x;ζ)$, which explicitly incorporate the behaviour of the pion wave function prescribed by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), predict ${u}^π(x\simeq 1;ζ) \sim (1-x)^{β(ζ)}$, $β(ζ\gtrsim m_p)>2$, where $m_p$ is the proton mass. Nevertheless, more than forty years after the first experiment to collect data suitable for extracting the $x\simeq 1$ behaviour of ${u}^π$, the empirical status remains uncertain because some methods used to fit existing data return a result for ${u}^π$ that violates this constraint. Such disagreement entails one of the following conclusions: the analysis concerned is incomplete; not all data being considered are a true expression of qualities intrinsic to the pion; or QCD, as it is currently understood, is not the theory of strong interactions. New, precise data are necessary before a final conclusion is possible. In developing these positions, we exploit a single proposition, viz. there is an effective charge which defines an evolution scheme for parton DFs that is all-orders exact. This proposition has numerous corollaries, which can be used to test the character of any DF, whether fitted or calculated.

QCD2019 Workshop Summary

The topical workshop {\it Strong QCD from Hadron Structure Experiments} took place at Jefferson Lab from Nov. 6-9, 2019. Impressive progress in relating hadron structure observables to the strong QCD mechanisms has been achieved from the {\it ab initio} QCD description of hadron structure in a diverse array of methods in order to expose emergent phenomena via quasi-particle formation. The wealth of experimental data and the advances in hadron structure theory make it possible to gain insight into strong interaction dynamics in the regime of large quark-gluon coupling (the strong QCD regime), which will address the most challenging problems of the Standard Model on the nature of the dominant part of hadron mass, quark-gluon confinement, and the emergence of the ground and excited state hadrons, as well as atomic nuclei, from QCD. This workshop aimed to develop plans and to facilitate the future synergistic efforts between experimentalists, phenomenologists, and theorists working on studies of hadron spectroscopy and structure with the goal to connect the properties of hadrons and atomic nuclei available from data to the strong QCD dynamics underlying their emergence from QCD. These results pave the way for a future breakthrough extension in the studies of QCD with an Electron-Ion Collider in the U.S.

Gluon propagator and three-gluon vertex with dynamical quarks

We present a detailed analysis of the kinetic and mass terms associated with the Landau gauge gluon propagator in the presence of dynamical quarks, and a comprehensive dynamical study of certain special kinematic limits of the three-gluon vertex. Our approach capitalizes on results from recent lattice simulations with (2+1) domain wall fermions, a novel nonlinear treatment of the gluon mass equation, and the nonperturbative reconstruction of the longitudinal three-gluon vertex from its fundamental Slavnov-Taylor identities. Particular emphasis is placed on the persistence of the suppression displayed by certain combinations of the vertex form factors at intermediate and low momenta, already known from numerous pure Yang-Mills studies. One of our central findings is that the inclusion of dynamical quarks moderates the intensity of this phenomenon only mildly, leaving the asymptotic low-momentum behavior unaltered, but displaces the characteristic "zero crossing" deeper into the infrared region. In addition, the effect of the three-gluon vertex is explored at the level of the renormalization-group invariant combination corresponding to the effective gauge coupling, whose size is considerably reduced with respect to its counterpart obtained from the ghost-gluon vertex. The main upshot of the above considerations is the further confirmation of the tightly interwoven dynamics between the two- and three-point sectors of QCD.

Gluon Green functions free of Quantum fluctuations

This letter reports on how the Wilson flow technique can efficaciously kill the short-distance quantum fluctuations of 2- and 3-gluon Green functions, removes the $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ scale and destroys the transition from the confining non-perturbative to the asymptotically-free perturbative sector. After the Wilson flow, the behavior of the Green functions with momenta can be described in terms of the quasi-classical instanton background. The same behavior also occurs, before the Wilson flow, at low-momenta. This last result permits applications as, for instance, the detection of instanton phenomenological properties or a cheap lattice calibration.

An algebraic model for the pion's valence-quark GPD

We briefly report on a recent computation, with the help of a fruitful algebraic model, sketching the pion valence dressed-quark generalized parton distribution. Then, preliminary, we introduce on a sensible procedure to get reliable results in both Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) and Efremov-Radyushkin-Brodsky-Lepage (ERBL) kinematical regions, grounded on the GPD overlap representation and its parametrization of a Radon transform of the so-called double distribution (DD).

DSE inspired model for the pion's valence dressed-quark GPD

We sketch here an approach to the computation of generalised parton distributions (GPDs), based upon a rainbow-ladder (RL) truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations and exemplified via the pion's valence dressed-quark GPD, $H_π^{\rm v}(x,ξ,t)$. Our analysis focuses on the case of zero skewness, $ξ=0$, and underlines that the impulse-approximation used hitherto to define the pion's valence dressed-quark GPD is generally invalid owing to omission of contributions from the gluons which bind dressed-quarks into the pion. A simple correction enables us to identify a practicable improvement to the approximation for $H_π^{\rm v}(x,0,t)$, expressed as the Radon transform of a single amplitude. Therewith we obtain results for $H_π^{\rm v}(x,0,t)$ and the associated impact-parameter dependent distribution, $q_π^{\rm v}(x,|\vec{b}_\perp|)$, which provide a qualitatively sound picture of the pion's dressed-quark structure at an hadronic scale.

High statistics determination of the strong coupling constant in Taylor scheme and its OPE Wilson coefficient from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

This paper reports on the determination of $α_S$ from lattice simulations with 2+1+1 twisted-mass dynamical flavours {\it via} the computation of the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. A high-statistics sample of gauge configurations, used to evaluate the coupling from ghost and gluon propagators, allows for the appropriate update of previous results, now performing an improved analysis of data with reduced statistical errors and the systematical uncertainties under a better control.

QCD: Restoration of Chiral Symmetry and Deconfinement for Large N_f

Exploiting the recent lattice results for the infrared gluon propagator with light dynamical quarks, we solve the gap equation for the quark propagator. We thus model the chiral symmetry breaking mechanism with increasing number of flavours and study confinement (intimately tied with the analytic properties of QCD Schwinger functions) order parameters. We obtain, with this approach, clear signals of chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement when the number of light quark flavors exceeds a critical value of $N_f^c \approx 8 \pm 1$, in agreement with the state-of-the-art direct lattice analysis of chiral symmetry restoration in QCD.

The strong running coupling at $τ$ and $Z_0$ mass scales from lattice QCD

This letter reports on the first computation, from data obtained in lattice QCD with $u,d,s$ and $c$ quarks in the sea, of the running strong coupling via the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. We provide with estimates of $\ams(m_τ^2)$ and $\ams(m_Z^2)$ in very good agreement with experimental results. Including a dynamical c quark makes safer the needed running of $\ams$.

Three-gluon running coupling from lattice QCD at $N_f=2+1+1$: a consistency check of the OPE approach

We present a lattice calculation of the renormalized running coupling constant in symmetric (MOM) and asymmetric ($\widetilde{\rm MOM}$) momentum substraction schemes including $u$, $d$, $s$ and $c$ quarks in the sea. An Operator Product Expansion dominated by the dimension-two $\langle A^2\rangle$ condensate is used to fit the running of the coupling. We argue that the agreement in the predicted $\langle A^2\rangle$ condensate for both schemes is a strong support for the validity of the OPE approach and the effect of this non-gauge invariant condensate over the running of the strong coupling.

Towards a Pion Generalized Parton Distribution Model from Dyson-Schwinger Equations

We compute the pion quark Generalized Parton Distribution H and quark Double Distributions F and G in a coupled Bethe-Salpeter and Dyson-Schwinger approach in terms of quark flavors or isospin states. We use simple analytic expressions inspired by the numerical resolution of Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations. We explicitly check the support and polynomiality properties, and the behavior under charge conjugation or time invariance of our model. We obtain analytic expressions for the pion Double Distributions and Generalized Parton Distribution at vanishing pion momentum transfer at a low scale. Our model compares very well to experimental pion form factor or Parton Distribution Function data. This paper is the first stage of a GPD-modeling program which will be pursued by incorporating more realistic solutions of the Bethe-Salpeter and Dyson-Schwinger equations.

A novel method for the physical scale setting on the lattice and its application to $N_f$=4 simulations

This letter reports on a new procedure for the lattice spacing setting that takes advantage of the very precise determination of the strong coupling in Taylor scheme. Although it can be applied for the physical scale setting with the experimental value of $Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}$ as an input, the procedure is particularly appropriate for relative "calibrations". The method is here applied for simulations with four degenerate light quarks in the sea and leads to prove that their physical scale is compatible with the same one for simulations with two light and two heavy flavours.

Testing the OPE Wilson coefficient for $A^2$ from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

Gluon and ghost propagators data, obtained in Landau gauge from lattice simulations with two light and two heavy dynamical quark flavours ($N_f$=2+1+1), are described here with a running formula including a four-loop perturbative expression and a nonperturbative OPE correction dominated by the local operator $A^2$. The Wilson coefficients and their variation as a function of the coupling constant are extracted from the numerical data and compared with the theoretical expressions that, after being properly renormalized, are known at ${\cal O}(α^4)$. As also $Λ_{\msbar}$ is rather well known for $N_f$=2+1+1, this allows for a precise consistency test of the OPE approach in the joint description of different observables.

Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$ from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

This paper is a first report on the determination of $Λ_{\msbar}$ from lattice simulations with 2+1+1 twisted-mass dynamical flavours {\it via} the computation of the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. We show this approach allows a very good control of the lattice artefacts and confirm the picture from previous works with quenched and ${\rm N}_f$=2 twisted-mass field configurations which prove the necessity to include non-perturbative power corrections in the description of the running. We provide with an estimate of $Λ_{\msbar}$ in very good agreement with experimental results. To our knowledge it is the first calculation with a dynamical charm quark which makes the running up to $α_s(M_Z)$ much safer.

Nontrivial ghost-gluon vertex and the match of RGZ, DSE and lattice Yang-Mills propagators

Either by solving the ghost propagator DSE or through a one-loop computation in the RGZ (Refined Gribov-Zwanziger) formalism, we show that a non-trivial ghost-gluon vertex is anyhow required to obtain a ghost propagator prediction compatible with the available corresponding lattice data in the SU(3) case. For the necessary gluon propagator input, we present RGZ tree level fits which account well for the gluon lattice data. Interestingly, this propagator can be rewritten in terms of a running gluon mass. A comparison of both DSE and RGZ results for the ghost propagator is furthermore provided. We also briefly discuss the connection between the RGZ and the OPE $d=2$ gluon condensate.

On the leading OPE corrections to the ghost-gluon vertex and the Taylor theorem

This brief note is devoted to a study of genuine non-perturbative corrections to the Landau gauge ghost-gluon vertex in terms of the non-vanishing dimension-two gluon condensate. We pay special attention to the kinematical limit which the bare vertex takes for its tree-level expression at any perturbative order, according to the well-known Taylor theorem. Based on our OPE analysis, we also present a simple model for the vertex, in acceptable agreement with lattice data.

Quark flavour effects on gluon and ghost propagators

We compute the full non-perturbative ghost and gluon two-point Green functions by using gauge field configurations with $\nf=2$ and $\nf=2+1+1$ twisted-mass quark flavours. We use simulations with several different light quark masses, heavy quark masses close to that of the strange and charm quarks, and lightest pseudoscalar masses ranging from 270 to 510 [MeV]. Quark flavour effects on both the gluon and the ghost propagators are then investigated in a wide range of momenta, bridging the deep infrared and intermediate momenta domain of QCD interactions in the presence of dynamical quarks. The ghost-gluon vertex is also indirectly probed through a consistency requirement among the lattice data for the gluon and ghost propagators and the ghost propagator Schwinger-Dyson equation. The effective full QCD coupling is finally constructed, and its dependence on the presence of dynamical fermions scrutinized.

The Infrared Behaviour of the Pure Yang-Mills Green Functions

We review the infrared properties of the pure Yang-Mills correlators and discuss recent results concerning the two classes of low-momentum solutions for them reported in literature; i.e. decoupling and scaling solutions. We will mainly focuss on the Landau gauge and pay special attention to the results inferred from the analysis of the Dyson-Schwinger equations of the theory and from "{\it quenched}" lattice QCD. The results obtained from properly interplaying both approaches are strongly emphasized.

On the massive gluon propagator, the PT-BFM scheme and the low-momentum behaviour of decoupling and scaling DSE solutions

We study the low-momentum behaviour of Yang-Mills propagators obtained from Landau-gauge Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSE) in the PT-BFM scheme. We compare the ghost propagator numerical results with the analytical ones obtained by analyzing the low-momentum behaviour of the ghost propagator DSE in Landau gauge, assuming for the truncation a constant ghost-gluon vertex and a simple model for a massive gluon propagator. The asymptotic expression obtained for the regular or decoupling ghost dressing function up to the order ${\cal O}(q^2)$ is proven to fit pretty well the numerical PT-BFM results. Furthermore, when the size of the coupling renormalized at some scale approaches some critical value, the numerical PT-BFM propagators tend to behave as the scaling ones. We also show that the scaling solution, implying a diverging ghost dressing function, cannot be a DSE solution in the PT-BFM scheme but an unattainable limiting case.

RI/MOM renormalization constants (N_f=4) and the strong coupling constant (N_f=2+1+1) from twisted-mass QCD

We study RI/MOM renormalization constants of bilinear quark operators for $N_f=4$ and the strong coupling constant for $N_f=2+1+1$ using Wilson twisted-mass fermions. We use the "egalitarian" method to remove H(4) hypercubic artifacts non-perturbatively, which enables us to study physical quantities in a wide range of momenta. We then apply OPE in studying the running behavior of $Z_q$ and $α_s$, from which we are able to extract the Landau gauge dimension-two gluon condensate $<A^2>$ which is of phenomenological interest.

The dimension-two gluon condensate, the ghost-gluon vertex and the Taylor theorem

We study the genuine non-perturbative corrections to the Landau gauge ghost-gluon vertex in terms of the non-vanishing dimension-two gluon condensate, and prove these corrections to give account of current SU(2) lattice data for the vertex with different kinematical configurations in the domain of intermediate momenta, roughly above 2-3 GeV. Based on this OPE analysis, we also present a simple model for the vertex, in acceptable agreement with the lattice data also in the IR domain. The necessity of a non-vanishing dimension-two gluon condensate will be also investigated through the analysis of the running coupling defined by the ghost-gluon vertex in Taylor kinematics.

The scaling infrared DSE solution as a critical end-point for the family of decoupling ones

Both regular (the zero-momentum ghost dressing function not diverging), also named decoupling, and critical (diverging), also named scaling, Yang-Mills propagators solutions can be obtained by analyzing the low-momentum behaviour of the ghost propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in Landau gauge. The asymptotic expression obtained for the regular or decoupling ghost dressing function up to the order ${\cal O}(q^2)$ fits pretty well the low-momentum ghost propagator obtained through the numerical integration of the coupled gluon and ghost DSE in the PT-BFM scheme. Furthermore, when the size of the coupling renormalized at some scale approaches some critical value, the PT-BFM results seems to tend to the the scaling solution as a limiting case. This critical value of the coupling is compared with the lattice estimate for the Yang-Mills QCD coupling and the latter is shown to lie much above the former.

Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ from twisted-mass lattice QCD at $N_f=2$

A non-perturbative calculation of the ghost-gluon running QCD coupling constant is performed using $N_f=2$ twisted-mass dynamical fermions. The extraction of $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ in the chiral limit reveals the presence of a non-perturbative OPE contribution that is assumed to be dominated by a dimension-two $\VEV{A^2}$ condensate. In this contest a novel method for calibrating the lattice spacing in lattice simulations is presented.

Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and $Λ_{\overline {\rm MS}}$ from twisted-mass lattice QCD at Nf=2

We present results concerning the non-perturbative evaluation of the ghost-gluon running QCD coupling constant from $N_f=2$ twisted-mass lattice calculations. A novel method for calibrating the lattice spacing, independent of the string tension and hadron spectrum is presented with results in agreement with previous estimates. The value of $Λ_{\overline{MS}}$ is computed from the running of the QCD coupling only after extrapolating to zero dynamical quark mass and after removing a non-perturbative OPE contribution that is assumed to be dominated by the dimension-two $\VEV{A^2}$ gluon condensate. The effect due to the dynamical quark mass in the determination of $\Lams$ is discussed.

Renormalisation of quark propagators from twisted-mass lattice QCD at $N_f$=2

We present results concerning the non-perturbative evaluation of the renormalisation constant for the quark field, $Z_q$, from lattice simulations with twisted mass quarks and three values of the lattice spacing. We use the RI'-MOM scheme. $Z_q$ has very large lattice spacing artefacts; it is considered here as a test bed to elaborate accurate methods which will be used for other renormalisation constants. We recall and develop the non-perturbative correction methods and propose tools to test the quality of the correction. These tests are also applied to the perturbative correction method. We check that the lattice spacing artefacts scale indeed as $a^2p^2$. We then study the running of $Z_q$ with particular attention to the non-perturbative effects, presumably dominated by the dimension-two gluon condensate $\VEV{A^2}$ in Landau gauge. We show indeed that this effect is present, and not small. We check its scaling in physical units confirming that it is a continuum effect. It gives a $\sim 4%$ contribution at 2 GeV. Different variants are used in order to test the reliability of our result and estimate the systematic uncertainties. Finally combining all our results and using the known Wilson coefficient of $\VEV{A^2}$ we find $g^2(μ^2) \VEV{A^2}_{μ^2\; CM} = 2.01(11)(^{+0.61}_{- 0.73}) \;\mathrm {GeV}^2$ at $μ=10\, \mathrm{GeV}$, in fair agreement within uncertainties with the value indepently extracted from the strong coupling constant.

Suppression of Lepton Flavour Violation from Quantum Corrections above $M_{GUT}$

We study the predictions for sfermion masses and Lepton Flavour Violation (LFV) for the WMAP preferred parameter space in $b-τ$ Yukawa-unified models with massive neutrinos. A soft term structure as predicted by an Abelian flavour symmetry combined with SU(5) RGEs for scales above $M_{GUT}$, results to an efficient suppression of the off-diagonal terms in the scalar soft matrices, particularly for $m_0< 100$ GeV. Using the WMAP bounds, this implies $35\le\tanβ\le 45$, $350\,\mathrm{GeV}\le m_{1/2}\le 1\,\mathrm{TeV}$, with the higher $\tanβ$ values being favored. Within this framework, SU(5) unification becomes compatible with the current experimental bounds, in contrast to the conventional case where the soft terms are postulated at the GUT scale.

The low-momentum ghost dressing function and the gluon mass

We study the low-momentum ghost propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in Landau gauge, assuming for the truncation a constant ghost-gluon vertex, as it is extensively done, and a simple model for a massive gluon propagator. Then, regular DSE solutions (the zero-momentum ghost dressing function not diverging) appear to emerge and we show the ghost propagator to be described by an asymptotic expression reliable up to the order ${\cal O}(q^2)$. That expression, depending on the gluon mass and the zero-momentum Taylor-scheme effective charge, is proven to fit pretty well the low-momentum ghost propagator obtained through big-volume lattice simulations.

$Λ_{QCD}$ from gluon and ghost propagators

Fundamental quantities of QCD, such as the strong coupling and $Λ_{QCD}$, are studied in the framework of lattice QCD with $N_f=2$ twisted mass fermions. In particular, the contact between lattice and continuous calculations is made by comparing the renormalized ghost-gluon vertex in MOM scheme with 4-loop perturbative results. A power correction is needed in order to have agreement between the two descriptions. This suggests the presence of a dimension-two $\VEV{A^2}$ gluon condensate whose value is found to be higher than in the quanched case.

A Ghost Story II: Ghosts, Gluons and the Gluon condensate beyond the IR of QCD

Beyond the deep IR, the analysis of ghost and gluon propagators still keeps very interesting non-perturbative information. The Taylor-scheme coupling can be computed and applied to obtain the $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ parameter from Landau gauge lattice simulations. Furthermore, a dimension-two gluon condensate, that can be understood in the instanton liquid model, plays an important role in the game.

A Ghost Story: Ghosts and Gluons in the IR regime of QCD

We discuss the different methods to obtain reliable informations about the deep infra-red behaviour of the gluon and ghost Green functions in QCD. We argue that a clever combination of analytical inputs and numerical ones is necessary. We illustrate this statement about the distinction between two classes of solutions of the ghost propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (GPDSE). We conclude that the solution II ("decoupling") with a finite renormalised ghost dressing function at zero momentum is strongly favored by lattice QCD, We derive a method to solve numerically the GPDSE using lattice inputs concerning the gluon propagator. We derive an analytical small momentum expansion of the Ghost dressing function. We prove from the large cut-off behaviour of the ghost propagator renormalisation constant, $\widetilde Z_3$, that the bare ghost dressing function is infinite at the infinite cut-off limit.

Gribov's horizon and the ghost dressing function

We study a relation recently derived by K. Kondo at zero momentum between the Zwanziger's horizon function, the ghost dressing function and Kugo's functions $u$ and $w$. We agree with this result as far as bare quantities are considered. However, assuming the validity of the horizon gap equation, we argue that the solution $w(0)=0$ is not acceptable since it would lead to a vanishing renormalised ghost dressing function. On the contrary, when the cut-off goes to infinity, $u(0) \to \infty$, $w(0) \to -\infty$ such that $u(0)+w(0) \to -1$. Furthermore $w$ and $u$ are not multiplicatively renormalisable. Relaxing the gap equation allows $w(0)=0$ with $u(0) \to -1$. In both cases the bare ghost dressing function, $F(0,Λ)$, goes logarithmically to infinity at infinite cut-off. We show that, although the lattice results provide bare results not so different from the $F(0,Λ)=3$ solution, this is an accident due to the fact that the lattice cut-offs lie in the range 1-3 GeV$^{-1}$. We show that the renormalised ghost dressing function should be finite and non-zero at zero momentum and can be reliably estimated on the lattice up to powers of the lattice spacing ; from published data on a $80^4$ lattice at $β=5.7$ we obtain $F_R(0,μ=1.5$ GeV)$\simeq 2.2$.

Ghost-gluon running coupling, power corrections and the determination of $Λ_{\bar {\rm MS}}$

We compute a formula including OPE power corrections to describe the running of a QCD coupling non-perturbatively defined through the ghost and gluon dressing functions. This turns out to be rather accurate. We propose the ``{\it plateau}''-procedure to compute $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$ from the lattice computation of the running coupling constant. We show a good agreement between the different methods which have been used to estimate $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}^{N_f=0}$. We argue that $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$ or the strong coupling constant computed with different lattice spacings may be used to estimate the lattice spacing ratio.

On the IR behaviour of the Landau-gauge ghost propagator

We examine analytically the ghost propagator Dyson-Schwinger Equation (DSE) in the deep IR regime and prove that a finite ghost dressing function at vanishing momentum is an alternative solution (solution II) to the usually assumed divergent one (solution I). We furthermore find that the Slavnov-Taylor identities discriminate between these two classes of solutions and strongly support the solution II. The latter turns out to be also preferred by lattice simulations within numerical uncertainties.

Divergent IR gluon propagator from Ward-Slavnov-Taylor identities?

We exploit the Ward-Slavnov-Taylor identity relating the 3-gluons to the ghost-gluon vertices to conclude either that the ghost dressing function is finite and non vanishing at zero momentum while the gluon propagator diverges (although it may do so weakly enough not to be in contradiction with current lattice data) or that the 3-gluons vertex is non-regular when one momentum goes to zero. We stress that those results should be kept in mind when one studies the Infrared properties of the ghost and gluon propagators, for example by means of Dyson-Schwinger equations.

Is the QCD ghost dressing function finite at zero momentum ?

We show that a finite non-vanishing ghost dressing function at zero momentum satisfies the scaling properties of the ghost propagator Schwinger-Dyson equation. This kind of Schwinger-Dyson solutions may well agree with lattice data and provides an interesting alternative to the widely spread claim that the gluon dressing function behaves like the inverse squared ghost dressing function, a claim which is at odds with lattice data. We demonstrate that, if the ghost dressing function is less singular than any power of $p$, it must be finite non-vanishing at zero momentum: any logarithmic behaviour is for instance excluded. We add some remarks about coupled Schwinger-Dyson analyses.

Modified instanton profile effects from lattice Green functions

We trace here instantons through the analysis of pure Yang-Mills gluon Green functions in the Landau gauge for a window of IR momenta (0.4 GeV $< k < 0.9$ GeV). We present lattice results that can be fitted only after substituting the BPST profile in the Instanton liquid model (ILM) by one based on the Diakonov and Petrov variational methods. This also leads us to gain information on the parameters of ILM.

Quark propagator and vertex: systematic corrections of hypercubic artifacts from lattice simulations

This is the first part of a study of the quark propagator and the vertex function of the vector current on the lattice in the Landau gauge and using both Wilson-clover and overlap actions. In order to be able to identify lattice artifacts and to reach large momenta we use a range of lattice spacings. The lattice artifacts turn out to be exceedingly large in this study. We present a new and very efficient method to eliminate the hypercubic (anisotropy) artifacts based on a systematic expansion on hypercubic invariants which are not SO(4) invariant. A simpler version of this method has been used in previous works. This method is shown to be significantly more efficient than the popular ``democratic'' methods. It can of course be applied to the lattice simulations of many other physical quantities. The analysis indicates a hierarchy in the size of hypercubic artifacts: overlap larger than clover and propagator larger than vertex function. This pleads for the combined study of propagators and vertex functions via Ward identities.

A transparent expression of the A^2-Condensate's renormalisation

We give a more transparent understanding of the vacuum expectation value of the renormalised local operator A^2 by relating it to the gluon propagator integrated over the momentum. The quadratically divergent perturbative contribution is subtracted and the remainder, dominantly due to the O(1/p^2) correction to the perturbative propagator at large p^2 is logarithmically divergent. This provides a transparent derivation of the fact that this O(1/p^2) term is related to the vacuum expectation value of the local A^2 operator and confirms a previous claim based on the operator product expansion (OPE) of the gluon propagator. At leading logarithms the agreement is quantitative, with a standard running factor, between the local A^2 condensate renormalised as described above and the one renormalised in the OPE context.

An Instanton Picture O.P.E. <A^2> Condensate?

Gluon two- and three-point Green Functions computed in Landau gauge from the lattice show the existence of power corrections to the purely perturbative expressions, that can be explained through an Operator Product Expansion as the influence of a non gauge invariant mass dimension two condensate. The relationship of this condensate with topological properties of QCD, namely instantons, will be studied, giving a first estimate of the contribution of instantons to this condensate based in the direct lattice measure, after a cooling process, of the instanton liquid properties.

First lattice QCD estimate of the g_{D^* D pi} coupling

We present the results of the first lattice QCD study of the strong coupling g_{D^* D pi}. From our simulations in the quenched approximation, we obtain g_{D^* D pi} = 18.8 +/- 2.3^{+1.1}_{-2.0} and hat(g)_c = 0.67 +/- 0.08^{+0.04}_{-0.06}. Whereas previous theoretical studies gave different predictions, our result favours a large value for hat(g)_c. It agrees very well with the recent experimental value by CLEO. hat(g) varies very little with the heavy mass and we find in the infinite mass limit hat(g)_infinity = 0.69(18).

Lattice data seems to show that power corrections should be convoked to describe appropriately the transition of the QCD coupling constant running from U.V. to I.R. domains. Those power corrections for the Landau-gauge MOM coupling constant in a pure Yang-Mills theory (N_f=0) are analysed in terms of Operator Product Expansion (O.P.E.) of two- and three-point Green functions, the gluon condensate <A^2> emerging from this study. The semi-classical picture given by instantons can be also used to look for into the nature of the power corrections and gluon condensate.

OPE and Powers corrections on the QCD coupling constant

The running coupling constant can be estimated by computing gluon two- and three-point Green functions from the lattice. Computing in lattice implies working in a fixed gauge sector (Landau). An source of systematic uncertainty is then the contribution of non gauge-invariant condensates, as $<A^2 >$, generating power corrections that might still be important at very high energies. We study the impact of this gluon condensate on the analysis of gluon propagator and vertex lattice data and on the estimate of $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$. We finally try a qualitative description of this gluon condensate through the instanton picture

Preliminaries on a Lattice Analysis of The Pion Light-cone Wave function: a Partonic Signal?

We present the first attempt of a new method to compute the pion light-cone wave function (LCWF) on the lattice. We compute the matrix element between the pion and the vacuum of a non-local operator: the propagator of a ``scalar quark'' (named for short "squark"). A theoretical analysis shows that for some kinematical conditions (energetic pion and hard squark) this matrix element depends dominantly on the LCWF $Φ_π(u), u\in [0,1]$. On the lattice, the discretization of the parton momenta imposes further constraints on the pion momentum. The two-point Green functions made of squark-quark and squark-squark fields show hadron-like bound-state behaviour and verify the standard energy spectrum. We show some indications that during a short time, after being created, the system of the spectator quark and the squark behave like partons, before they form a hadron-like bound state. This short time is the place where the partonic wave function has to be looked for.

Preliminary Calculation of $α_s$ from Green Functions with Dynamical Quarks

We present preliminary results on the computation of the QCD running coupling constant in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme and Landau gauge with two flavours of dynamical Wilson quarks. Gluon momenta range up to about 7 GeV ($β=$ 5.6, 5.8 and 6.0) with a constant dynamical-quark mass. This range already allows to exhibit some evidence for a sizable $1/μ^2$ correction to the asymptotic behaviour, as in the quenched approximation, although a fit without power corrections is still possible with a reasonable $χ^2$. Following the conclusions of our quenched study, we take into account $1/μ^2$ correction to the asymptotic behaviour. We find $Λ_{\rm \bar{MS}}^{N_f=2} = 264(27) {\rm MeV} \times [{a^{-1}(5.6,0.1560)}/{2.19 {\rm GeV}}] $, which leads to $α_s(M_Z) = 0.113(3)(4)$. The latter result has to be taken as a preliminary indication rather than a real prediction in view of the systematic errors still to be controlled. Still, being two sigmas below the experimental result makes it very encouraging.

Remarks on the determination of the Landau gauge OPE for the Asymmetric three gluon vertex

We compute a compact OPE formula describing power corrections to the perturbative expression for the asymmetric $\widetilde{MOM}$-renormalized running coupling constant up to the leading logarithm. By the use of the phenomelogical hypothesis leading to the factorization of the condensates through a perturbative vacuum insertion, the only relevant condensate in the game is $<A^2>$. The validity of the OPE formula is tested by searching for a good-quality coherent description of previous lattice evaluations of $\widetilde{MOM}$-renormalized gluon propagator and running coupling.

Testing Landau gauge OPE on the Lattice with a $<A^2>$ Condensate

Using the operator product expansion we show that the $O(1/p^2)$ correction to the perturbative expressions for the gluon propagator and the strong coupling constant resulting from lattice simulations in the Landau gauge are due to a non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of the operator $A^μA_μ$. This is done using the recently published Wilson coefficients of the identity operator computed to third order, and the subdominant Wilson coefficient computed in this paper to the leading logarithm. As a test of the applicability of OPE we compare the $<A^μA_μ>$ estimated from the gluon propagator and the one from the coupling constant in the flavourless case. Both agree within the statistical uncertainty: $\sqrt{< A^μA_μ>} \simeq 1.64(15)$ GeV. Simultaneously we fit $\Lams = $ 233(28) MeV in perfect agreement with previous lattice estimates. When the leading coefficients are only expanded to two loops, the two estimates of the condensate differ drastically. As a consequence we insist that OPE can be applied in predicting physical quantities only if the Wilson coefficients are computed to a high enough perturbative order.

Consistent OPE Description of Gluon Two- and Three-point Green Function?

We perform an OPE analysis of the flavorless non-perturbative gluon propagator and the symmetric three-gluon vertex in the Landau gauge. The first subdominant operator is $A_μA^μ$ which can condensate in the Landau gauge ``vacuum'' although being a non-gauge invariant operator. We neglect all higher dimension operators. Then the gluon propagator and the symmetric three gluon vertex only depend on one common unknown condensate. We propose a consistency check from lattice data. At two loops for the leading coefficient and with $1/p^2$ corrections at tree-level order the two fitted values for the condensate do not agree. At three loops we argue that the today unknown $β_2^{\rm MOM}$ should be equal to $1.5(3)\times β_2^{\widetilde{\rm MOM}}=7400(1500)$ to fulfill the OPE relation. Inclusion of the power corrections' anomalous dimensions should improve further the agreement. We show that these techniques cannot be applied to the asymmetric three gluon vertex with one vanishing momentum.

Lattice calculation of $1/p^2$ corrections to $α_s$ and of $Λ_{\rm {QCD}}$ in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme

We report on very strong evidence of the occurrence of power terms in $\as(p)$, the QCD running coupling constant in the $\widetilde{MOM}$ scheme, by analyzing non-perturbative measurements from the lattice three-gluon vertex between 2.0 and 10.0 GeV at zero flavor. While putting forward the caveat that this definition of the coupling is a gauge dependent one, the general relevance of such an occurrence is discussed. We fit $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}^{(n_f=0)}= 237 \pm 3 ^{+ 0}_{-10}$ MeV in perfect agreement with the result obtained by the ALPHA group with a totally different method. The power correction to $\as(p)$ is fitted to $(0.63\pm 0.03 ^{+ 0.0}_{- 0.13}) {\rm GeV}^2/p^2$.

CP-Violating Reflection of High Energy Fermions during a first order Phase Transition

We study the high energy behaviour of fermions hitting a general wall caused by a first-order phase transition. The wall profile is introduced through general analytic and non-analytic functions. The reflection coefficient is computed in the high energy limit and its connection with the analytic properties of the wall profile function is shown. The high energy behaviour of the fermions hitting the wall is determined either by the leading singularity, i.e. the closest pole to the real axis, when the profile function is analytic, or by the first non-continuous derivative on the real axis, in the non-analytic case. CP-violating wall profiles are studied and it is shown that the respective symmetry properties of the CP-conserving and CP-violating profile functions plays an important role on the size of the CP asymmetry.
