Reflectionless canonical systems, I. Arov gauge and right limits

In spectral theory, $j$-monotonic families of $2\times 2$ matrix functions appear as transfer matrices of many one-dimensional operators. We present a general theory of such families, in the perspective of canonical systems in Arov gauge. This system resembles a continuum version of the Schur algorithm, and allows to restore an arbitrary Schur function along the flow of associated boundary values at infinity. In addition to results in Arov gauge, this provides a gauge-independent perspective on the Krein-de Branges formula and the reflectionless property of right limits on the absolutely continuous spectrum. This work has applications to inverse spectral problems which have better behavior with respect to a normalization at an internal point of the resolvent domain.

Interpolation for Hardy Spaces: Marcinkiewicz decomposition, Complex Interpolation and Holomorphic Martingales

The real and complex interpolation spaces for the classical Hardy spaces $H^1$ and $H^\infty$ were determined in 1983 by P.W. Jones. Due to the analytic constraints the associated Marcinkiewicz decomposition gives rise to a delicate approximation problem for the $L^ 1$ metric. Specifically for $ f \in H^p$ the size of $$ {\rm{inf}} \{ \| f - f_1 \| _1 \,:\, f_1 \in H^\infty ,\, \|f_1\|_\infty \le λ\}$$ needs to be determined for any $ λ>0 $. In the present paper we develop a new set of truncation formulae for obtaining the Marcinkiewicz decomposition of $(H^1, H^\infty) $. We revisit the real and complex interpolation theory for Hardy spaces by examining our newly found formulae.

Killip-Simon problem and Jacobi flow on GMP matrices

One of the first theorems in perturbation theory claims that for an arbitrary self-adjoint operator A there exists a perturbation B of Hilbert-Schmidt class, which destroys completely the absolutely continuous spectrum of A (von Neumann). However, if A is the discrete free 1-D Schrödinger operator and B is a Jacobi matrix the a.c. spectrum remains perfectly the same. Moreover, Killip and Simon described explicitly the spectral properties for such A+B. Jointly with Damanik they generalized this result to the case of perturbations of periodic Jacobi matrices. Recall that the spectrum of a periodic Jacobi matrix is a system of intervals of a very specific nature. Christiansen, Simon and Zinchenko posed the following question: "is there an extension of the Damanik-Killip-Simon theorem to the general finite system of intervals case?" Here we solve this problem completely. Our method deals with the Jacobi flow on GMP matrices. GMP (an abbreviation for Generalized Moment Problem) matrices are probably a new object in the spectral theory (a very close relative of Jacobi and CMV matrices). The Jacobi flow on them is also a probably new member of the rich family of integrable systems. An ideology of analytic vector bundles plays an essential role in our construction.

Counterexamples to the Kotani-Last Conjecture for Continuum Schrödinger Operators via Character-Automorphic Hardy Spaces

The Kotani-Last conjecture states that every ergodic operator in one space dimension with non-empty absolutely continuous spectrum must have almost periodic coefficients. This statement makes sense in a variety of settings; for example, discrete Schrödinger operators, Jacobi matrices, CMV matrices, and continuum Schrödinger operators. In the main body of this paper we show how to construct counterexamples to the Kotani-Last conjecture for continuum Schrödinger operators by adapting the approach developed by Volberg and Yuditskii to construct counterexamples to the Kotani-Last conjecture for Jacobi matrices. This approach relates the reflectionless operators associated with the prescribed spectrum to a family of character-automorphic Hardy spaces and then relates the shift action on the space of operators to the resulting action on the associated characters. The key to our approach is an explicit correspondence between the space of continuum reflectionless Schrödinger operators associated with a given set and the space of reflectionless Jacobi matrices associated with a derived set. Once this correspondence is established we can rely to a large extent on the previous work of Volberg and Yuditskii to produce the resulting action on the space of characters. We analyze this action and identify situations where we can observe absolute continuity without almost periodicity. In the appendix we show how to implement this strategy and obtain analogous results for extended CMV matrices.

Mean type of functions of bounded characteristic and Martin functions in Denjoy domains

Functions of bounded characteristic in simply connected domains have a classical factorization to Blaschke, outer and singular inner parts. The latter has a singular measure on the boundary assigned to it. The exponential speed of change of a function when approaching a point of a boundary (mean type) corresponds to a point mass at this point. In this paper we consider the analogous relation for functions in arbitrary infinitely connected (Denjoy) domains. The factorization result holds of course with one important addition: all functions involved become multiple valued even though the initial function was single valued. The mean type now can be measured by using the Martin function of the domain. But this result does not follow from the lifting to the universal covering of the domain because of the simple (but interesting) reason that the mean types of the original and the lifted functions can be completely different.

On a conjecture of Widom

In 1969 Harold Widom published his seminal paper, which gave a complete description of orthogonal and Chebyshev polynomials on a system of smooth Jordan curves. When there were Jordan arcs present the theory of orthogonal polynomials turned out to be just the same, but for Chebyshev polynomials Widom's approach proved only an upper estimate, which he conjectured to be the correct asymptotic behavior. In this note we make some clarifications which will show that the situation is more complicated.

Killip-Simon-classes of Jacobi matrices with essential spectrum on two symmetric and of SMP matrices on two arbitrary intervals

Jacobi matrices probably are the most classical object in spectral theory, while CMV matrices are a comparably fresh one, although they are related to a very classical topic, namely to orhtogonal polynomials on the unit circle (in the same way as Jacobi matrices are related to orhogonal polynomials on the real axis). We will discuss the third member of this family. Our matrices are generated by the orthonormal systems of functions related to the so-called Strong Moment Problem. For this reason we call them SMP matrices. For instance, one can describe the spectral sets of periodic SMP matrices. Similarly to the case of their counterparts, the description is given by means of conformal mappings on hyperbolic, in this case, comb domains. One can represent functional models associated with periodic and almost periodic SMP matrices. We are especially enthusiastic about the role, which such matrices can play in the Killip-Simon-problem related to Jacobi matrices with the essential spectrum on two arbitrary intervals. The parametric description of SMP matrices of the Killip-Simon-class with their essential spectrum on two arbitrary intervals is the main result of this paper.

On $L^1$ extremal problem for entire functions

We generalized the Korkin-Zolotarev theorem to the case of entire functions having the smallest $L^1$ norm on a system of intervals $E$. If $\bbC\setminus E$ is a domain of Widom type with the Direct Cauchy Theorem we give an explicit formula for the minimal deviation. Important relations between the problem and the theory of canonical systems with reflectionless resolvent functions are shown.

On the Direct Cauchy Theorem in Widom Domains: Positive and Negative Examples

We discuss several questions which remained open in our joint work with M. Sodin "Almost periodic Jacobi matrices with homogeneous spectrum, infinite-dimensional Jacobi inversion, and Hardy spaces of character--automorphic functions". In particular, we show that there exists a non-homogeneous set $E$ such that the Direct Cauchy Theorem (DCT) holds in the Widom domain $\bbC\setminus E$. On the other hand we demonstrate that the weak homogeneity condition on $E$ (introduced recently by Poltoratski and Remling) does not ensure that DCT holds in the corresponding Widom domain.
