Moduli spaces for Lamé functions and Abelian integrals of the second kind

The space of Lamé functions of order m is isomorphic to the space of pairs (elliptic curve, Abelian differential) where the differential has a single zero of order 2m at the origin and m double poles with vanishing residues. We describe the topology of this space: it is a Riemann surface of finite type; we find the number of components and the genus and Euler characteristic of each component. As an application we find the degrees of Cohn's polynomials confirming a conjecture by Robert Maier. As another application we partially describe the degeneration locus of the space of spherical metrics on tori with one conic singularity where the conic angle is an odd multiple of 2$π$.

Stability in the Marcinkiewicz theorem

Ostrovskii's generalization of the Marcinkiewicz theorem implies that if an entire characteristic functions of a probability distribution satisfies $\log^+\log|f(z)|=o(|z|),\; z\to\infty,$ and is zero-free then the distribution is normal. We show that under the same growth condition, absence of zeros in a wide vertical strip implies that the distribution is close to a normal one. This generalizes and simplifies a recent result of Michelen and Sahasrabudhe.

Interactions between function theory and holomorphic dynamics

This is a survey talk on the ICMS conference "Resonances of complex dynamics", 9-13 July 2018. Three examples which show how dynamical considerations lead to new results in complex function theory are discussed. These examples are: a) a refinement of of the Wiman-Valiron method, b) the proof of Hayman's conjecture on the value distribution of derivatives of meromorphic functions, and c) a new simplified proof of the result of Lin and Wang on the number of critical points of the Green function on a torus.

Co-axial monodromy

For Riemannian metrics of constant positive curvature on a punctured sphere with conic singularities at the punctures and co-axial monodromy of the developing map, possible angles at the singularities are completely described. This completes the recent result of Mondello and Panov. The related problem of describing possible multiplicities of critical points of logarithmic potentials of finitely many charges is also solved.

PT-symmetric eigenvalues for homogeneous potentials

We consider one-dimensional Schrödinger equations with homogeneous potential, under appropriate PT-symmetric boundary conditions. We prove the phenomenon which was discovered by Bender and Boettcher by numerical computation: as the degree of the potential changes, the real spectrum suddenly becomes non-real in the sense that all but finitely many eigenvalues become non-real. We find the limit arguments of these non-real eigenvalues as they tend to infinity.

Metrics with conic singularities and spherical polygons

A spherical n-gon is a bordered surface homeomorphic to a closed disk, with n distinguished boundary points called corners, equipped with a Riemannian metric of constant curvature 1, except at the corners, and such that the boundary arcs between the corners are geodesic. We discuss the problem of classification of these polygons and enumerate them in the case that two angles at the corners are not multiples of pi. The problem is equivalent to classification of some second order linear differential equations with regular singularities, with real parameters and unitary monodromy.

Metrics with four conic singularities and spherical quadrilaterals

A spherical quadrilateral is a bordered surface homeomorphic to a closed disk, with four distinguished boundary points called corners, equipped with a Riemannian metric of constant curvature 1, except at the corners, and such that the boundary arcs between the corners are geodesic. We discuss the problem of classification of these quadrilaterals and perform the classification up to isometry in the case that two angles at the corners are multiples of pi. The problem is equivalent to classification of Heun's equations with real parameters and unitary monodromy.

Quasi-exceptional domains

Exceptional domains are domains on which there exists a positive harmonic function, zero on the boundary and such that the normal derivative on the boundary is constant. Recent results classify exceptional domains as belonging to either a certain one-parameter family of simply periodic domains or one of its scaling limits. We introduce quasi-exceptional domains by allowing the boundary values to be different constants on each boundary component. This relaxed definition retains the interesting property of being an \emph{arclength quadrature domain}, and also preserves the connection to the hollow vortex problem in fluid dynamics. We give a partial classification of such domains in terms of certain Abelian differentials. We also provide a new two-parameter family of periodic quasi-exceptional domains. These examples generalize the hollow vortex array found by Baker, Saffman, and Sheffield (1976). A degeneration of regions of this family provide doubly-connected examples.

Non-algebraic quadrature domains

It is well known that, in the plane, the boundary of any quadrature domain (in the classical sense) coincides with the zero set of a polynomial. We show, by explicitly constructing some four-dimensional examples, that this is not always the case. This confirms, in dimension 4, a conjecture of the second author. Our method is based on the Schwarz potential and involves elliptic integrals of the third kind.

Dynamics of a higher dimensional analog of the trigonometric functions

We introduce a higher dimensional quasiregular map analogous to the trigonometric functions and we use the dynamics of this map to define, for d>1, a partition of d-dimensional Euclidean space into curves tending to infinity such that two curves may intersect only in their endpoints and such that the union of the curves without their endpoints has Hausdorff dimension one.

Singular perturbation of polynomial potentials in the complex domain with applications to PT-symmetric families

In the first part of the paper, we discuss eigenvalue problems of the form -w"+Pw=Ew with complex potential P and zero boundary conditions at infinity on two rays in the complex plane. We give sufficient conditions for continuity of the spectrum when the leading coefficient of P tends to 0. In the second part, we apply these results to the study of topology and geometry of the real spectral loci of PT-symmetric families with P of degree 3 and 4, and prove several related results on the location of zeros of their eigenfunctions.

Landau's theorem for holomorphic curves in projective space and the Kobayashi metric on hyperplane complements

We prove an effective version of a theorem of Dufresnoy: For any set of 2n+1 hyperplanes in general position in n-dimensional complex projective space, we find an explicit constant K such that for every holomorphic map f from the unit disc to the complement of these hyperplanes, the derivative of f at the origin measured with respect to the Fubuni-Study metric is bouned above by K. This result gives an explicit lower bound on the Royden function, i.e., the ratio of the Kobayashi metric on the hyperplane complement to the Fubini-Study metric. Our estimate is based on the potential-theoretic method of Eremenko and Sodin.

Analytic continuation of eigenvalues of a quartic oscillator

We consider the Schrodinger operator on the real line with even quartic potential and study analytic continuation of eigenvalues, as functions of the coefficient of the potential. We prove several properties of this analytic continuation conjectured by Bender, Wu, Loeffel and Martin. 1. All eigenvalues are given by branches of two multi-valued analytic functions, one for even eigenfunctions and one for odd ones. 2. The only singularities of these multi-valued functions in the complex plane are algebraic ramification points, and there are only finitely many singularities over each compact subset of the plane.

Elementary proof of the B. and M. Shapiro conjecture for rational functions

We give a new elementary proof of the following theorem: if all critical points of a rational function g belong to the real line then there exists a fractional linear transformation L such that L(g) is a real rational function. Then we interpret the result in terms of Fuchsian differential equations whose general solution is a polynomial and in terms of electrostatics.

Meromorphic traveling wave solutions of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation

We determine all cases when there exists a meromorphic solution of the third order ODE describing traveling waves solutions of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. It turns out that there are no other meromorphic solutions besides those explicit solutions found by Kuramoto and Kudryashov. The general method used in this paper, based on Nevanlinna theory, is applicable to finding all meromorphic solutions of a wide class of non-linear ODE. Keywords: Kuramoto and Sivashinsky equation, meromorphic functions, elliptic functions, Nevanlinna theory.

Covering properties of meromorphic functions, negative curvature and spherical geometry

Every nonconstant meromorphic function in the plane univalently covers spherical discs of radii arbitrarily close to arctan(sqrt 8) ~ 70^\circ 32'. If in addition all critical points of the function are multiple, then a similar statement holds with pi/2. These constants are the best possible. The proof is based on the consideration of negatively curved singular surfaces associated with meromorphic functions.
