An equivariant Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for proper actions II: the $K$-theoretic index

Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular locally compact group $G$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary, such that $M/G$ is compact. Then an equivariant Dirac-type operator $D$ on $M$ under a suitable boundary condition has an equivariant index $\operatorname{index}_G(D)$ in the $K$-theory of the reduced group $C^*$-algebra $C^*_rG$ of $G$. This is a common generalisation of the Baum-Connes analytic assembly map and the (equivariant) Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index. In part I of this series, a numerical index $\operatorname{index}_g(D)$ was defined for an element $g \in G$, in terms of a parametrix of $D$ and a trace associated to $g$. An Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type index formula was obtained for this index. In this paper, we show that, under certain conditions, $τ_g(\operatorname{index}_G(D)) = \operatorname{index}_g(D)$, for a trace $τ_g$ defined by the orbital integral over the conjugacy class of $g$. This implies that the index theorem from part I yields information about the $K$-theoretic index $\operatorname{index}_G(D)$. It also shows that $\operatorname{index}_g(D)$ is a homotopy-invariant quantity.

An equivariant orbifold index for proper actions

For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal compact subgroup, we realise the Dirac induction map from the Connes--Kasparov conjecture as a Kasparov product and obtain an index theorem for Spin-Dirac operators on compact locally symmetric spaces.

Coarse geometry and Callias quantisation

Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular, locally compact group $G$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$. For equivariant elliptic operators that are invertible outside a cocompact subset of $M$, we show that a localised index in the $K$-theory of the maximal group $C^*$-algebra of $G$ is well-defined. The approach is based on the use of maximal versions of equivariant localised Roe algebras, and many of the technical arguments in this paper are used to handle the ways in which they differ from their reduced versions. By using the maximal group $C^*$-algebra instead of its reduced counterpart, we can apply the trace given by integration over $G$ to recover an index defined earlier by the last two authors, and developed further by Braverman, in terms of sections invariant under the group action. As a very special case, this allows one to refine numerical obstructions to positive scalar curvature on a noncompact $\operatorname{Spin}$ manifold $X$ defined via Callias index theory, to obstructions in the $K$-theory of the maximal $C^*$-algebra of the fundamental group $π_1(X)$. As a motivating application in another direction, we prove a version of Guillemin and Sternberg's quantisation commutes with reduction principle for equivariant indices of $\operatorname{Spin}^c$ Callias-type operators.

Equivariant Callias index theory via coarse geometry

The equivariant coarse index is well-understood and widely used for actions by discrete groups. We extend the definition of this index to general locally compact groups. We use a suitable notion of admissible modules over $C^*$-algebras of continuous functions to obtain a meaningful index. Inspired by work by Roe, we then develop a localised variant, with values in the $K$-theory of a group $C^*$-algebra. This generalises the Baum-Connes assembly map to non-cocompact actions. We show that an equivariant index for Callias-type operators is a special case of this localised index, obtain results on existence and non-existence of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature invariant under proper group actions, and show that a localised version of the Baum-Connes conjecture is weaker than the original conjecture, while still giving a conceptual description of the $K$-theory of a group $C^*$-algebra.

An equivariant index for proper actions I

Equivariant indices have previously been defined in cases where either the group or the orbit space in question is compact. In this paper, we develop an equivariant index without assuming the group or the orbit space to be compact. This allows us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact groups by Braverman. In parts II and III of this series, we will explore some properties and applications of this index.

An equivariant index for proper actions II: properties and applications

In the first part of this series, we defined an equivariant index without assuming the group acting or the orbit space of the action to be compact. This allowed us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact groups by Braverman. In this paper, we investigate properties and applications of this index. We prove that it has an induction property that can be used to deduce various other properties of the index. In the case of compact orbit spaces, we show how it is related to the analytic assembly map from the Baum-Connes conjecture, and an index used by Mathai and Zhang. We use the index to define a notion of K-homological Dirac induction, and show that, under conditions, it satisfies the quantisation commutes with reduction principle.

An equivariant index for proper actions III: the invariant and discrete series indices

We study two special cases of the equivariant index defined in part I of this series. We apply this index to deformations of Spin$^c$-Dirac operators, invariant under actions by possibly noncompact groups, with possibly noncompact orbit spaces. One special case is an index defined in terms of multiplicities of discrete series representations of semisimple groups, where we assume the Riemannian metric to have a certain product form. The other is an index defined in terms of sections invariant under a group action. We obtain a relation with the analytic assembly map, quantisation commutes with reduction results, and Atiyah-Hirzebruch type vanishing theorems. The arguments are based on an explicit decomposition of Spin$^c$-Dirac operators with respect to a global slice for the action.

Geometric quantization and families of inner products

We formulate a quantization commutes with reduction principle in the setting where the Lie group $G$, the symplectic manifold it acts on, and the orbit space of the action may all be noncompact. It is assumed that the action is proper, and the zero set of a deformation vector field, associated to the momentum map and an equivariant family of inner products on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of $G$, is $G$-cocompact. The central result establishes an asymptotic version of this quantization commutes with reduction principle. Using an equivariant family of inner products on $\mathfrak{g}$ instead of a single one makes it possible to handle both noncompact groups and manifolds, by extending Tian and Zhang's Witten deformation approach to the noncompact case.

Formal geometric quantisation for proper actions

We define formal geometric quantisation for proper Hamiltonian actions by possibly noncompact groups on possibly noncompact, prequantised symplectic manifolds, generalising work of Weitsman and Paradan. We study the functorial properties of this version of formal geometric quantisation, and relate it to a recent result by the authors via a version of the shifting trick. For (pre)symplectic manifolds of a certain form, quantisation commutes with reduction, in the sense that formal quantisation equals a more direct version of quantisation.

Quantisation of presymplectic manifolds, K-theory and group representations

Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group with finite component group, and let $K<G$ be a maximal compact subgroup. We obtain a quantisation commutes with reduction result for actions by $G$ on manifolds of the form $M = G\times_K N$, where $N$ is a compact prequantisable Hamiltonian $K$-manifold. The symplectic form on $N$ induces a closed two-form on $M$, which may be degenerate. We therefore work with presymplectic manifolds, where we take a presymplectic form to be a closed two-form. For complex semisimple groups and semisimple groups with discrete series, the main result reduces to results with a more direct representation theoretic interpretation. The result for the discrete series is a generalised version of an earlier result by the author. In addition, the generators of the $K$-theory of the $C^*$-algebra of a semisimple group are realised as quantisations of fibre bundles over suitable coadjoint orbits.

Quantisation commutes with reduction at discrete series representations of semisimple groups

Using the analytic assembly map that appears in the Baum-Connes conjecture in noncommutative geometry, we generalise the $\Spin^c$-version of the Guillemin-Sternberg conjecture that `quantisation commutes with reduction' to (discrete series representations of) semisimple groups $G$ with maximal compact subgroups $K$ acting cocompactly on symplectic manifolds. We prove this statement in cases where the image of the momentum map in question lies in the set of strongly elliptic elements, the set of elements of $\g^*$ with compact stabilisers. This assumption on the image of the momentum map is equivalent to the assumption that $M = G \times_K N$, for a compact Hamiltonian $K$-manifold $N$. The proof comes down to a reduction to the compact case. This reduction is based on a `quantisation commutes with induction'-principle, and involves a notion of induction of Hamiltonian group actions. This principle, in turn, is based on a version of the naturality of the assembly map for the inclusion of $K$ into $G$.
