This article is about hyperelastic deformations of plates (planar domains) which minimize a neohookean type energy. Particularly, we investigate a stored energy functional introduced by J.M. Ball in his seminal paper "Global invertibility of Sobolev functions and the interpenetration of matter". The mappings under consideration are Sobolev homeomorphisms and their weak limits. They are monotone in the sense of C. B. Morrey. One major advantage of adopting monotone Sobolev mappings lies in the existence of the energy-minimal deformations. However, injectivity is inevitably lost, so an obvious question to ask is: what are the largest subsets of the reference configuration on which minimal deformations remain injective? The fact that such subsets have full measure should be compared with the notion of global invertibility which deals with subsets of the deformed configuration instead. In this connection we present a Cantor type construction to show that both the branch set and its image may have positive area. Another novelty of our approach lies in allowing the elastic deformations be free along the boundary, known as frictionless problems.
We prove an Ahlfors refection theorem for $p$-reflections over Jordan curves bounding subhyperbolic domains in $\hat {\mathbb C}$.
Let $M$ be a closed, oriented, and connected Riemannian $n$-manifold, for $n\ge 2$, which is not a rational homology sphere. We show that, for a non-constant and non-injective uniformly quasiregular self-map $f\colon M\to M$, the topological entropy $h(f)$ is $\log \mathrm{deg}( f )$. This proves Shub's entropy conjecture in this case.
We extend the notion of a pseudoholomorphic vector of Iwaniec, Verchota, and Vogel to mappings between Riemannian manifolds. Since this class of mappings contains both quasiregular mappings and (pseudo)holomorphic curves, we call them quasiregular curves. Let $n\le m$ and let $M$ be an oriented Riemannian $n$-manifold, $N$ a Riemannian $m$-manifold, and $ω\in Ω^n(N)$ a smooth closed non-vanishing $n$-form on $N$. A continuous Sobolev map $f\colon M \to N$ in $W^{1,n}_{\mathrm{loc}}(M,N)$ is a $K$-quasiregular $ω$-curve for $K\ge 1$ if $f$ satisfies the distortion inequality $(\lVertω\rVert\circ f)\lVert Df\rVert^n \le K (\star f^* ω)$ almost everywhere in $M$. We prove that quasiregular curves satisfy Gromov's quasiminimality condition and a version of Liouville's theorem stating that bounded quasiregular curves $\mathbb R^n \to \mathbb R^m$ are constant. We also prove a limit theorem that a locally uniform limit $f\colon M \to N$ of $K$-quasiregular $ω$-curves $(f_j \colon M\to N)$ is also a $K$-quasiregular $ω$-curve. We also show that a non-constant quasiregular $ω$-curve $f\colon M \to N$ is discrete and satisfies $\star f^*ω>0$ almost everywhere, if one of the following additional conditions hold: the form $ω$ is simple or the map $f$ is $C^1$-smooth.
We show that a $K$-quasiregular $ω$-curve from a Euclidean domain to a Euclidean space with respect to a covector $ω$ is locally $(1/K)(\lVert ω\rVert/|ω|_{\ell_1})$-Hölder continuous. We also show that quasiregular curves enjoy higher integrability.
We show that, if the local dimension of the branch set of a discrete and open mapping $f\colon M\to N$ between $n$-manifolds is less than $(n-2)$ at a point $y$ of the image of the branch set $fB_f$, then the local monodromy of $f$ at $y$ is perfect. In particular, for generalized branched covers between $n$-manifolds the dimension of $fB_f$ is exactly $(n-2)$ at the points of abelian local monodromy. As an application, we show that a generalized branched covering $f\colon M \to N$ of local multiplicity at most three between $n$-manifolds is either a covering or $fB_f$ has local dimension $(n-2)$.
We prove that Kleinian groups whose limit sets are Cantor sets of Hausdorff dimension $<1$ are free. On the other hand we construct for any $ε>0$ examples of non-free purely hyperbolic Kleinian groups whose limit set is a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension $<1+ε$.
We show that for a closed $n$-manifold $N$ admitting a quasiregular mapping from the Euclidean $n$-space the following are equivalent: (1) order of growth of $π_1(N)$ is $n$, (2) $N$ is aspherical, and (3) $π_1(N)$ is virtually $\mathbb{Z}^n$ and torsion free.
We show that given $n\ge 3$, $q\ge 1$, and a finite set $\{y_1,\ldots, y_q\}$ in $\mathbb R^n$ there exists a quasiregular mapping $\mathbb R^n \to \mathbb R^n$ omitting exactly points $y_1,\ldots, y_q$.
We consider accumulation of periodic points in local uniformly quasiregular dynamics. Given a local uniformly quasiregular mapping $f$ with a countable and closed set of isolated essential singularities and their accumulation points on a closed Riemannian manifold, we show that points in the Julia set are accumulated by periodic points. If, in addition, the Fatou set is non-empty and connected, the accumulation is by periodic points in the Julia set itself. We also give sufficient conditions for the density of repelling periodic points.
We show that a closed, connected, oriented, Riemannian $n$-manifold, admitting a branched cover of bounded length distortion from $\mathbb R^n$, has a virtually Abelian fundamental group.
Benjamini and Schramm introduced the notion of distributional limit of a sequence of graphs with uniformly bounded valence and studied such limits in the case that the involved graphs are planar. We investigate distributional limits of sequences of Riemannian manifolds with bounded curvature which satisfy certain condition of quasi-conformal nature. We then apply our results to somewhat improve Benjamini's and Schramm's original result on the recurrence of the simple random walk on limits of planar graphs. For instance, as an application give a proof of the fact that for graphs in an expander family, the genus of each graph is bounded from below by a linear function of the number of vertices.
We establish the existence and fundamental properties of the equilibrium measure in uniformly quasiregular dynamics. We show that a uniformly quasiregular endomorphism $f$ of degree at least 2 on a closed Riemannian manifold admits an equilibrium measure $μ_f$, which is balanced and invariant under $f$ and non-atomic, and whose support agrees with the Julia set of $f$. Furthermore we show that $f$ is strongly mixing with respect to the measure $μ_f$. We also characterize the measure $μ_f$ using an approximation property by iterated pullbacks of points under $f$ up to a set of exceptional initial points of Hausdorff dimension at most $n-1$. These dynamical mixing and approximation results are reminiscent of the Mattila-Rickman equidistribution theorem for quasiregular mappings. Our methods are based on the existence of an invariant measurable conformal structure due to Iwaniec and Martin and the $\cA$-harmonic potential theory.
We consider decomposition spaces $\R^3/G$ that are manifold factors and admit defining sequences consisting of cubes-with-handles. Metrics on $\R^3/G$ constructed via modular embeddings into Euclidean spaces promote the controlled topology to a controlled geometry. The quasisymmetric parametrizability of the metric space $\R^3/G\times \R^m$ imposes quantitative topological constraints, in terms of the circulation and growth, to the defining sequences for $\R^3/G$. We give a necessary condition and a sufficient condition for the existence of parametrization. The necessary condition answers a question of Heinonen and Semmes on quasisymmetric parametrizability of spaces associated to the Bing double. The sufficient condition gives new examples of quasispheres in $\bS^4$.
We study the existence of geometrically controlled branched covering maps from $\mathbb R^3$ to open $3$-manifolds or to decomposition spaces $\mathbb S^3/G$, and from $\mathbb S^3/G$ to $\mathbb S^3$.
We establish a rescaling theorem for isolated essential singularities of quasiregular mappings. As a consequence we show that the class of closed manifolds receiving a quasiregular mapping from a punctured unit ball with an essential singularity at the origin is exactly the class of closed quasiregularly elliptic manifolds, that is, closed manifolds receiving a non-constant quasiregular mapping from a Euclidean space.
We prove that while there are maps $\bT^4\to\#^3(\bS^2\times\bS^2)$ of arbitrarily large degree, there is no branched cover from $4$-torus to $\#^3(\bS^2\times \bS^2)$. More generally, we obtain that, as long as $N$ satisfies a suitable cohomological condition, any $π_1$-surjective branched cover $\bT^n \to N$ is a homeomorphism.
We consider extensions of differential fields of mappings and obtain a lower energy bound for quasiconformal extension fields in terms of the topological degree. We also consider the related minimization problem for the $q$-harmonic energy, and show that the energy minimizers admit higher integrability.
