We study the growth of the number of conjugacy classes of infinite dihedral subgroups of lattices in PSL(2,R), generalizing earlier work of Sarnak and Bourgain-Kontorovich on the growth of the number of reciprocal geodesics on the modular surface. We also prove that reciprocal geodesics are equidistributed in the unit tangent bundle.
We give explicit theoretical and heuristical bounds for how big does a data set sampled from a reach-1 submanifold M of euclidian space need to be, to be able to estimate the dimension of M with 90% confidence.
We prove that pseudo-Anosov mapping classes are generic with respect to certain notions of genericity reflecting that we are dealing with mapping classes.
We prove that any mapping torus of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class with bounded normalized Weil-Petersson translation length contains a finite set of transverse and level closed curves, and drilling out this set of curves results in one of a finite number of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The number of manifolds in the finite list depends only on the bound for normalized translation length. We also prove a complementary result that explains the necessity of removing level curves by producing new estimates for the Weil-Petersson translation length of compositions of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes and arbitrary powers of a Dehn twist.
Being a maximal compact subgroup of SL_nC, SU_n is a deformation retract of the former group. In this note we prove that, for sufficiently large n, there is no retraction of SL_nC to SU_n which preserves commutativity.
Let G be a compact Lie group, and consider the variety Hom(Z^k,G) of representations of Z^k into G. We view this as a based space by designating the trivial representation to be its base point. We prove that the fundamental group of this space is naturally isomorphic to π_1(G)^k.
We prove that while there are maps $\bT^4\to\#^3(\bS^2\times\bS^2)$ of arbitrarily large degree, there is no branched cover from $4$-torus to $\#^3(\bS^2\times \bS^2)$. More generally, we obtain that, as long as $N$ satisfies a suitable cohomological condition, any $π_1$-surjective branched cover $\bT^n \to N$ is a homeomorphism.
