Q-curvature and Path Integral Complexity

We discuss the interpretation of path integral optimization as a uniformization problem in even dimensions. This perspective allows for a systematical construction of the higher-dimensional path integral complexity in holographic conformal field theories in terms of Q-curvature actions. We explore the properties and consequences of these actions from the perspective of the optimization programme, tensor networks and penalty factors. Moreover, in the context of recently proposed holographic path integral optimization, we consider higher curvature contributions on the Hartle-Hawking bulk slice and study their impact on the optimization as well as their relation to Q-curvature actions and finite cut-off holography.

Quantum chaos and the complexity of spread of states

We propose a measure of quantum state complexity defined by minimizing the spread of the wave-function over all choices of basis. Our measure is controlled by the "survival amplitude" for a state to remain unchanged, and can be efficiently computed in theories with discrete spectra. For continuous Hamiltonian evolution, it generalizes Krylov operator complexity to quantum states. We apply our methods to the harmonic and inverted oscillators, particles on group manifolds, the Schwarzian theory, the SYK model, and random matrix models. For time-evolved thermofield double states in chaotic systems our measure shows four regimes: a linear "ramp" up to a "peak" that is exponential in the entropy, followed by a "slope" down to a "plateau". These regimes arise in the same physics producing the slope-dip-ramp-plateau structure of the Spectral Form Factor. Specifically, the complexity slope arises from spectral rigidity, distinguishing different random matrix ensembles.

Operator growth in 2d CFT

We investigate and characterize the dynamics of operator growth in irrational two-dimensional conformal field theories. By employing the oscillator realization of the Virasoro algebra and CFT states, we systematically implement the Lanczos algorithm and evaluate the Krylov complexity of simple operators (primaries and the stress tensor) under a unitary evolution protocol. Evolution of primary operators proceeds as a flow into the 'bath of descendants' of the Verma module. These descendants are labeled by integer partitions and have a one-to-one map to Young diagrams. This relationship allows us to rigorously formulate operator growth as paths spreading along the Young's lattice. We extract quantitative features of these paths and also identify the one that saturates the conjectured upper bound on operator growth.

Path Integral Complexity and Kasner singularities

We explore properties of path integral complexity in field theories on time dependent backgrounds using its dual description in terms of Hartle-Hawking wavefunctions. In particular, we consider boundary theories with time dependent couplings which are dual to Kasner-AdS metrics in the bulk with a time dependent dilaton. We show that holographic path integral complexity decreases as we approach the singularity, consistent with earlier results from holographic complexity conjectures. Furthermore, we find examples where the complexity becomes universal i.e., independent of the Kasner exponents, but the properties of the path integral tensor networks depend sensitively on this data.

Geometry and Complexity of Path Integrals in Inhomogeneous CFTs

In this work we develop the path integral optimization in a class of inhomogeneous 2d CFTs constructed by putting an ordinary CFT on a space with a position dependent metric. After setting up and solving the general optimization problem, we study specific examples, including the Möbius, SSD and Rainbow deformed CFTs, and analyze path integral geometries and complexity for universal classes of states in these models. We find that metrics for optimal path integrals coincide with particular slices of $AdS_3$ geometries, on which Einstein's equations are equivalent to the condition for minimal path integral complexity. We also find that while leading divergences of path integral complexity remain unchanged, constant contributions are modified in a universal, position dependent manner. Moreover, we analyze entanglement entropies in inhomogeneous CFTs and show that they satisfy Hill's equations, which can be used to extract the energy density consistent with the first law of entanglement. Our findings not only support comparisons between slices of bulk spacetimes and circuits of path integrations, but also demonstrate that path integral geometries and complexity serve as a powerful tool for understanding the interesting physics of inhomogeneous systems.

Double Local Quenches in 2D CFTs and Gravitational Force

In this work we extensively study the dynamics of excited states created by instantaneous local quenches at two different points, i.e., double local quenches. We focus on setups in two dimensional holographic and free Dirac fermion CFTs. We calculate the energy stress tensor and entanglement entropy for double joining and splitting local quenches. In the splitting local quenches we find an interesting oscillating behaviors. Finally, we study the energy stress tensor in double operator local quenches. In all these examples, we find that, in general, there are non-trivial interactions between the two local quenches. Especially, in holographic CFTs, the differences of the above quantities between the double local quench and the simple sum of two local quenches tend to be negative. We interpret this behavior as merely due to gravitational force in their gravity duals.

Charged Entanglement Entropy of Local Operators

In this work we consider the time evolution of charged Renyi entanglement entropies after exciting the vacuum with local fermionic operators. In order to explore the information contained in charged Renyi entropies, we perform computations of their excess due to the operator excitation in 2d CFT, free fermionic field theories in various dimensions as well as holographically. In the analysis we focus on the dependence on the entanglement charge, the chemical potential and the spacetime dimension. We find that excesses of charged (Renyi) entanglement entropy can be interpreted in terms of charged quasiparticles. Moreover, we show that by appropriately tuning the chemical potential charged Renyi entropies can be used to extract entanglement in a certain charge sector of the excited state.

Entanglement constant for conformal families

We show that in 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories, exciting a state with a local operator increases the Renyi entanglement entropies by a constant which is the same for every member of the conformal family. Hence, it is an intrinsic parameter that characterises local operators from the perspective of quantum entanglement. In rational conformal field theories this constant corresponds to the logarithm of the quantum dimension of the primary operator. We provide several detailed examples for the second Renyi entropies and a general derivation.

Entanglement of Local Operators in large N CFTs

We study Renyi and von-Neumann entanglement entropy of excited states created by local operators in large N (or large central charge) CFTs. First we point that a naive large N expansion can break down for the von-Neumann entanglement entropy, while it does not for the Renyi entanglement entropy. This happens even for the excited states in free Yang-Mills theories. Next, we analyze strongly coupled large N CFTs from both field theoretic and holographic viewpoints. We find that the Renyi entanglement entropy of the excited state produced by a local operator, grows logarithmically under its time evolution and its coefficient is proportional to the conformal dimension of the local operator.

Quantum Entanglement of Localized Excited States at Finite Temperature

In this work we study the time evolutions of (Renyi) entanglement entropy of locally excited states in two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) at finite temperature. We consider excited states created by acting with local operators on thermal states and give both field theoretic and holographic calculations. In free field CFTs, we find that the growth of Renyi entanglement entropy at finite temperature is reduced compared to the zero temperature result by a small quantity proportional to the width of the localized excitations. On the other hand, in finite temperature CFTs with classical gravity duals, we find that the entanglement entropy approaches a characteristic value at late time. This behaviour does not occur at zero temperature. We also study the mutual information between the two CFTs in the thermofield double (TFD) formulation and give physical interpretations of our results.

A basis for large operators in N=4 SYM with orthogonal gauge group

We develop techniques to study the correlation functions of "large operators" whose bare dimension grows parametrically with N, in SO(N) gauge theory. We build the operators from a single complex matrix. For these operators, the large N limit of correlation functions is not captured by summing only the planar diagrams. By employing group representation theory we are able to define local operators which generalize the Schur polynomials of the theory with gauge group U(N). We compute the two point function of our operators exactly in the free field limit showing that they diagonalize the two point function. We explain how these results can be used to obtain the exact free field answers for correlators of operators in the trace basis.

Cosmology or Catastrophe? A non-minimally coupled scalar in an inhomogeneous universe

A non-minimally coupled scalar field can have, in principle, a negative effective Planck mass squared which depends on the scalar field. Surprisingly, an isotropic and homogeneous cosmological universe with a non-minimally coupled scalar field is perfectly smooth as the rolling scalar field causes the effective Planck mass to change sign and pass through zero. However, we show that any small deviations from homogeneity diverge as the effective Planck mass vanishes, with catastrophic consequences for the cosmology. The physical origin of the divergence is due to the presence of non-zero scalar anisotropic stress from the non-minimally coupled scalar field. Thus, while the homogeneous and isotropic cosmology appears surprisingly sensible when the effective Planck mass vanishes, inhomogeneities tell a different story.

Dynamical entanglement entropy with angular momentum and U(1) charge

We consider time-dependent entanglement entropy (EE) for a 1+1 dimensional CFT in the presence of angular momentum and U(1) charge. The EE saturates, irrespective of the initial state, to the grand canonical entropy after a time large compared with the length of the entangling interval. We reproduce the CFT results from an AdS dual consisting of a spinning BTZ black hole and a flat U(1) connection. The apparent discrepancy that the holographic EE does not a priori depend on the U(1) charge while the CFT EE does, is resolved by the charge-dependent shift between the bulk and boundary stress tensors. We show that for small entangling intervals, the entanglement entropy obeys the first law of thermodynamics, as conjectured recently. The saturation of the EE in the field theory is shown to follow from a version of quantum ergodicity; the derivation indicates that it should hold for conformal as well as massive theories in any number of dimensions.

Entanglement Entropy of Extremal BTZ

In this note, we use entanglement entropy as a tool to explore the universal properties of CFTs dual to extremal BTZ black holes. We demonstrate that the entanglement entropies computed in the CFTs at the boundary of the extremal BTZ and the boundary of the near-horizon limit of the extremal BTZ are in perfect agreement and have the form appropriate to a two-dimensional CFT with only the chiral part excited and the anti-chiral in the ground state. Furthermore, we analyze the universal limits of the entanglement entropy and recover the correct value of the thermal entropy for large entangling intervals and the first-law like relation for the small interval.

Operators, Correlators and Free Fermions for SO(N) and Sp(N)

Using the recently constructed basis for local operators in free SO(N) gauge theory we derive an exact formula for the correlation functions of multi trace operators. This formula is used to obtain a simpler form and a simple product rule for the operators in the SO(N) basis. The coefficients of the product rule are the Littlewood-Richardson numbers which determine the corresponding product rule in free U(N) gauge theory. SO(N) gauge theory is dual to a non-oriented string theory on the AdS_5xRP^5 geometry. To explore the physics of this string theory we consider the limit of the gauge theory that, for the U(N) gauge theory, is dual to the pp-wave limit of AdS_5xS^5. Non-planar unoriented ribbon diagrams do not survive this limit. We give arguments that the number of operators in our basis matches counting using the exact free field partition function of free SO(N) gauge theory. We connect the basis we have constructed to free fermions, which has a natural interpretation in terms of a class of 1/2-BPS bubbling geometries, which arise as orientifolds of type IIB string theory. Finally, we obtain a complete generalization of these results to Sp(N) gauge theory by proving that the finite N physics of SO(N) and Sp(N) gauge theory are related by exchanging symmetrizations and antisymmetrizations and replacing N by -N.

Domain Structure of Black Hole Space-Times with a Cosmological Constant

We generalize the domain structure for stationary black hole space-times to include asymptotically de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter space-times. Given a set of commuting Killing vector fields of a space-time the domain structure lives on the submanifold of the orbit space on which at least one of the Killing vector fields has zero norm. In general the domain structure provides topological and geometrical invariants of black hole space-times that in specific cases have proven to be a crucial part of a full characterization leading to uniqueness theorems. In four and five dimensions the domain structure generalizes the rod structure. We examine in detail the domain structure for four, five, six and seven-dimensional black hole space-times including a very general class of spherically symmetric and static black hole space-times as well as the exact solutions for Kerr-(Anti)-de Sitter black holes. While for asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space-times the domain structures resemble that of asymptotically flat space-times, the domain structures of asymptotically de Sitter space-times are shown to be compact. Finally, we find under certain assumptions that the horizon topologies for four- and five-dimensional black holes are restricted by our domain structure analysis.

Extremal vs. Non-Extremal Correlators with Giant Gravitons

We consider extremal and non-extremal three-point functions of two giant gravitons and one point-like graviton using Schur polynomials in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and holographically, using a semiclassical Born-Infeld analysis as well as bubbling geometries. For non-extremal three-point functions our computations using all three approaches are in perfect agreement. For extremal correlators we find that our results from the bubbling geometry analysis agree with existing results from the gauge theory. The semiclassical Born-Infeld computation for the extremal case is known to give a different answer, which we interpret as a manifestation of the known subtlety of holography for extremal correlators.

From Schurs to Giants in ABJ(M)

In this work we consider various correlators with Schur polynomials in ABJ(M) models that on the dual gravity side should correspond to processes involving giant gravitons. Our analysis imposes several constraints on the physics of the probe branes on AdS4xCP3 as well as sheds more light on giant graviton solutions in this background with additional NS B-field. Our main tool is a formula that we derive for extremal n-point functions of the single trace chiral primary operators in the free field theory limit. The formula expresses the correlators in terms of the two-point function of Schur polynomials labeled by hook diagrams and is valid for a large class of gauge theories. In particular, in N = 4 SYM, it proves the conjecture of Beisert et al.

Lightlike contours with fermions

We consider high energy scattering of open superstrings in flat spacetime. It is shown that in this regime amplitudes are dominated by minimal supersurfaces spanned by lightlike supercontours built of the on-shell momenta. We demonstrate how using a generalization of the functional over reparametrizations of the boundary one can extract the area of the minimal supersurfaces directly from the lightlike contour. Exponent of the area correctly reproduces RNS amplitudes. We also comment on possible implementation of the supercontours to Wilson loops/Scattering amplitudes duality.

Observations on Open and Closed String Scattering Amplitudes at High Energies

We study massless open and closed string scattering amplitudes in flat space at high energies. Similarly to the case of AdS space, we demonstrate that, under the T-duality map, the open string amplitudes are given by the exponential of minus minimal surface areas whose boundaries are cusped closed loops formed by lightlike momentum vectors. We show further that the closed string amplitudes are obtained by gluing two copies of minimal surfaces along their cusped lightlike boundaries. This can be thought of as a manifestation of the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) relation at high energies. We also discuss the KLT relation in AdS/CFT and its possible connection to amplitudes in N=8 supergravity as well as the correlator/amplitude duality.

On the spectral problem of N=4 SYM with orthogonal or symplectic gauge group

We study the spectral problem of N=4 SYM with gauge group SO(N) and Sp(N). At the planar level, the difference to the case of gauge group SU(N) is only due to certain states being projected out, however at the non-planar level novel effects appear: While 1/N-corrections in the SU(N) case are always associated with splitting and joining of spin chains, this is not so for SO(N) and Sp(N). Here the leading 1/N-corrections, which are due to non-orientable Feynman diagrams in the field theory, originate from a term in the dilatation operator which acts inside a single spin chain. This makes it possible to test for integrability of the leading 1/N-corrections by standard (Bethe ansatz) means and we carry out various such tests. For orthogonal and symplectic gauge group the dual string theory lives on the orientifold AdS5xRP5. We discuss various issues related to semi-classical strings on this background.
