Holography of Information in AdS/CFT

The principle of the holography of information states that in a theory of quantum gravity a copy of all the information available on a Cauchy slice is also available near the boundary of the Cauchy slice. This redundancy in the theory is already present at low energy. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, this principle can be translated into a statement about the dual conformal field theory. We carry out this translation and demonstrate that the principle of the holography of information holds in bilocal holography.

Large N Optimization for multi-matrix systems

In this work we revisit the problem of solving multi-matrix systems through numerical large $N$ methods. The framework is a collective, loop space representation which provides a constrained optimization problem, addressed through master-field minimization. This scheme applies both to multi-matrix integrals ($c=0$ systems) and multi-matrix quantum mechanics ($c=1$). The complete fluctuation spectrum is also computable in the above scheme, and is of immediate physical relevance in the later case. The complexity (and the growth of degrees of freedom) at large $N$ have stymied earlier attempts and in the present work we present significant improvements in this regard. The (constrained) minimization and spectrum calculations are easily achieved with close to $10^4$ variables, giving solution to Migdal-Makeenko, and collective field equations. Considering the large number of dynamical (loop) variables and the extreme nonlinearity of the problem, high precision is obtained when confronted with solvable cases. Through numerical results presented, we prove that our scheme solves, by numerical loop space methods, the general two matrix model problem.

Integrality, Duality and Finiteness in Combinatoric Topological Strings

A remarkable result at the intersection of number theory and group theory states that the order of a finite group $G$ (denoted $|G|$) is divisible by the dimension $d_R$ of any irreducible complex representation of $G$. We show that the integer ratios ${ |G|^2 / d_R^2 } $ are combinatorially constructible using finite algorithms which take as input the amplitudes of combinatoric topological strings ($G$-CTST) of finite groups based on 2D Dijkgraaf-Witten topological field theories ($G$-TQFT2). The ratios are also shown to be eigenvalues of handle creation operators in $G$-TQFT2/$G$-CTST. These strings have recently been discussed as toy models of wormholes and baby universes by Marolf and Maxfield, and Gardiner and Megas. Boundary amplitudes of the $G$-TQFT2/$G$-CTST provide algorithms for combinatoric constructions of normalized characters. Stringy S-duality for closed $G$-CTST gives a dual expansion generated by disconnected entangled surfaces. There are universal relations between $G$-TQFT2 amplitudes due to the finiteness of the number $K $ of conjugacy classes. These relations can be labelled by Young diagrams and are captured by null states in an inner product constructed by coupling the $G$-TQFT2 to a universal TQFT2 based on symmetric group algebras. We discuss the scenario of a 3D holographic dual for this coupled theory and the implications of the scenario for the factorization puzzle of 2D/3D holography raised by wormholes in 3D.

Central Charges for the Double Coset

The state space of excited giant graviton brane systems is given by the Gauss graph operators. After restricting to the $su(2|3)$ sector of the theory, we consider this state space. Our main result is the decomposition of this state space into irreducible representations of the $su(2|2)\ltimes\mathbb{R}$ global symmetry. Excitations of the giant graviton branes are charged under a central extension of the global symmetry. The central extension generates gauge transformations so that the action of the central extension vanishes on physical states. Indeed, we explicitly demonstrate that the central charge is set to zero by the Gauss Law of the brane world volume gauge theory.

Is Deep Learning a Renormalization Group Flow?

Although there has been a rapid development of practical applications, theoretical explanations of deep learning are in their infancy. Deep learning performs a sophisticated coarse graining. Since coarse graining is a key ingredient of the renormalization group (RG), RG may provide a useful theoretical framework directly relevant to deep learning. In this study we pursue this possibility. A statistical mechanics model for a magnet, the Ising model, is used to train an unsupervised restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM). The patterns generated by the trained RBM are compared to the configurations generated through an RG treatment of the Ising model. Although we are motivated by the connection between deep learning and RG flow, in this study we focus mainly on comparing a single layer of a deep network to a single step in the RG flow. We argue that correlation functions between hidden and visible neurons are capable of diagnosing RG-like coarse graining. Numerical experiments show the presence of RG-like patterns in correlators computed using the trained RBMs. The observables we consider are also able to exhibit important differences between RG and deep learning.

Perturbative 4D conformal field theories and representation theory of diagram algebras

The correlators of free four dimensional conformal field theories (CFT4) have been shown to be given by amplitudes in two-dimensional $so(4,2)$ equivariant topological field theories (TFT2), by using a vertex operator formalism for the correlators. We show that this can be extended to perturbative interacting conformal field theories, using two representation theoretic constructions. A co-product deformation for the conformal algebra accommodates the equivariant construction of composite operators in the presence of non-additive anomalous dimensions. Explicit expressions for the co-product deformation are given within a sector of $ \mathcal{N} =4 $ SYM and for the Wilson-Fischer fixed point near four dimensions. The extension of conformal equivariance beyond integer dimensions (relevant for the Wilson-Fischer fixed point) leads to the definition of an associative diagram algebra $ {\bf U}_{*} $, abstracted from $ Uso(d)$ in the limit of large integer $d$, which admits extension of $ Uso(d)$ representation theory to general real (or complex) $d$. The algebra is related, via oscillator realisations, to $so(d)$ equivariant maps and Brauer category diagrams. Tensor representations are constructed where the diagram algebra acts on tensor products of a fundamental diagram representation. A similar diagrammatic algebra ${\bf U}_{\star ,2}$, related to a general $d$ extension for $ Uso(d,2)$ is defined, and some of its lowest weight representations relevant to the Wilson-Fischer fixed point are described.

Scrambling in Yang-Mills

Acting on operators with a bare dimension $Δ\sim N^2$ the dilatation operator of $U(N)$ ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory defines a 2-local Hamiltonian acting on a graph. Degrees of freedom are associated with the vertices of the graph while edges correspond to terms in the Hamiltonian. The graph has $p\sim N$ vertices. Using this Hamiltonian, we study scrambling and equilibration in the large $N$ Yang-Mills theory. We characterize the typical graph and thus the typical Hamiltonian. For the typical graph, the dynamics leads to scrambling in a time consistent with the fast scrambling conjecture. Further, the system exhibits a notion of equilibration with a relaxation time, at weak coupling, given by $t\sim{p\overλ}$ with $λ$ the 't Hooft coupling.

Absorption of closed strings by giant gravitons

A new approach to the computation of correlation functions involving two determinant operators as well as one non-protected single trace operator has recently been developed by Jiang, Komatsu and Vescovi. This correlation function provides the holographic description of the absorption of a closed string by a giant graviton. The analysis has a natural interpretation in the framework of group representation theory, which admits a generalization to general Schur polynomials and restricted Schur polynomials. This generalizes the holographic description to any giant or dual giant gravitons which carry more than one angular momentum on the sphere. For a restricted Schur polynomial labeled by a column with $N$ boxes (dual to a maximal giant graviton) we find evidence in favor of integrability.

Holography for Tensor models

In this article we explore the holographic duals of tensor models using collective field theory. We develop a description of the gauge invariant variables of the tensor model. This is then used to develop a collective field theory description of the dynamics. We consider matrix like subsectors that develop an extra holographic dimension. In contrast to this, we argue that melonic large $N$ limits do not develop an extra dimension. The finite $N$ physics of the model is also developed and non-perturbative effects in the $1/N$ expansion are exhibited.

Anomalous Dimensions of Heavy Operators from Magnon Energies

We study spin chains with boundaries that are dual to open strings suspended between systems of giant gravitons and dual giant gravitons. The anomalous dimensions computed in the gauge theory are in complete quantitative agreement with energies computed in the dual string theory. The comparison makes use of a description in terms of magnons, generalizing results for a single maximal giant graviton. The symmetries of the problem determine the structure of the magnon boundary reflection/scattering matrix up to a phase. We compute a reflection/scattering matrix element at weak coupling and verify that it is consistent with the answer determined by symmetry. We find the reflection/scattering matrix does not satisfy the boundary Yang-Baxter equation so that the boundary condition on the open spin chain spoils integrability. We also explain the interpretation of the double coset ansatz in the magnon language.

LLM Magnons

We consider excitations of LLM geometries described by coloring the LLM plane with concentric black rings. Certain closed string excitations are localized at the edges of these rings. The string theory predictions for the energies of magnon excitations of these strings depends on the radii of the edges of the rings. In this article we construct the operators dual to these closed string excitations and show how to reproduce the string theory predictions for magnon energies by computing one loop anomalous dimensions. These operators are linear combinations of restricted Schur polynomials. The distinction between what is the background and what is the excitation is accomplished in the choice of the subgroup and the representations used to construct the operator.

CFT4 as SO(4,2)-invariant TFT2

We show that correlators of local operators in four dimensional free scalar field theory can be expressed in terms of amplitudes in a two dimensional topological field theory (TFT2). We describe the state space of the TFT2, which has $SO(4,2)$ as a global symmetry, and includes both positive and negative energy representations. Invariant amplitudes in the TFT2 correspond to surfaces interpolating from multiple circles to the vacuum. They are constructed from SO(4,2) invariant linear maps from the tensor product of the state spaces to complex numbers. When appropriate states labeled by 4D-spacetime coordinates are inserted at the circles, the TFT2 amplitudes become correlators of the four-dimensional CFT4. The TFT2 structure includes an associative algebra, related to crossing in the 4D-CFT, with a non-degenerate pairing related to the CFT inner product in the CFT4. In the free-field case, the TFT2/CFT4 correspondence can largely be understood as realization of free quantum field theory as a categorified form of classical invariant theory for appropriate SO(4,2) representations. We discuss the prospects of going beyond free fields in this framework.

Interacting Double Coset Magnons

We consider the anomalous dimensions of restricted Schur polynomials constructed using n~O(N) complex adjoint scalars Z and m complex adjoint scalars Y. We fix m<<n so that our operators are almost half BPS. At leading order in m/n this system corresponds to a dilute gas of m free magnons. Adding the first correction of order m/n to the anomalous dimension, which arises at two loops, we find non-zero magnon interactions. The form of this new operator mixing is studied in detail for a system of two giant gravitons with four strings attached.

Interactions as conformal intertwiners in 4D QFT

In a recent paper we showed that the correlators of free scalar field theory in four dimensions can be constructed from a two dimensional topological field theory based on so(4,2) equivariant maps (intertwiners). The free field result, along with results of Frenkel and Libine on equivariance properties of Feynman integrals, are developed further in this paper. We show that the coefficient of the log term in the 1-loop 4-point conformal integral is a projector in the tensor product of so(4,2) representations. We also show that the 1-loop 4-point integral can be written as a sum of four terms, each associated with the quantum equation of motion for one of the four external legs. The quantum equation of motion is shown to be related to equivariant maps involving indecomposable representations of so(4,2), a phenomenon which illuminates multiplet recombination. The harmonic expansion method for Feynman integrals is a powerful tool for arriving at these results. The generalization to other interactions and higher loops is discussed.

Topological String Correlators from Matrix Models

We discuss how to compute connected matrix model correlators for operators related to the gravitational descendants of the puncture operator, for the topological A model on P^1. The relevant correlators are determined by recursion relations that follow from a systematic 1/N expansion of well chosen Schwinger-Dyson equations. Our results provide further compelling evidence for Gopakumar's proposed "simplest gauge string duality" between the Gaussian matrix model and the topological A model on P^1.

Finite N Quiver Gauge Theory

At finite N the number of restricted Schur polynomials is greater than or equal to the number of generalized restricted Schur polynomials. In this note we study this discrepancy and explain its origin. We conclude that, for quiver gauge theories, in general, the generalized restricted Schur polynomials correctly account for the complete set of finite N constraints and they provide a basis, while the restricted Schur polynomials only account for a subset of the finite N constraints and are thus overcomplete. We identify several situations in which the restricted Schur polynomials do in fact account for the complete set of finite N constraints. In these situations the restricted Schur polynomials and the generalized restricted Schur polynomials both provide good bases for the quiver gauge theory. Finally, we demonstrate situations in which the generalized restricted Schur polynomials reduce to the restricted Schur polynomials.

Heavy Operators in Superconformal Chern-Simons Theory

We study the anomalous dimensions for scalar operators in ABJM theory in the SU(2) sector. The operators we consider have a classical dimension that grows as N in the large N limit. Consequently, the large N limit is not captured by summing planar diagrams - non-planar contributions have to be included. We find that the mixing matrix at two-loop order is diagonalized using a double coset ansatz, reducing it to the Hamiltonian of a set of decoupled oscillators. The spectrum of anomalous dimensions, when interpreted in the dual gravity theory, shows that the energy of the fluctuations of the corresponding giant graviton is dependent on the size of the giant. The first subleading corrections to the large N limit are also considered. These subleading corrections to the dilatation operator do not commute with the leading terms, indicating that integrability may not survive beyond the large N limit.

Holography as a Gauge Phenomenon in Higher Spin Duality

Employing the world line spinning particle picture we discuss the appearance of several different `gauges' which we use to gain a deeper explanation of the Collective/Gravity identification. We discuss transformations and algebraic equivalences between them. For a bulk identification we develop a `gauge independent' representation where all gauge constraints are eliminated. This `gauge reduction' of Higher Spin Gravity demonstrates that the physical content of 4D AdS HS theory is represented by the dynamics of an unconstrained scalar field in 6d. It is in this gauge reduced form that HS Theory can be seen to be equivalent to a 3+3 dimensional bi-local collective representation of CFT3.

Subleading corrections to the Double Coset Ansatz preserve integrability

In this article we compute the anomalous dimensions for a class of operators, belonging to the SU(3) sector of the theory, that have a bare dimension of order N. For these operators the large N limit and the planar limit are distinct and summing only the planar diagrams will not capture the large N dynamics. Although the spectrum of anomalous dimensions has been computed for this class of operators, previous studies have neglected certain terms which were argued to be small. After dropping these terms diagonalizing the dilatation operator reduces to diagonalizing a set of decoupled oscillators. In this article we explicitly compute the terms which were neglected previously and show that diagonalizing the dilatation operator still reduces to diagonalizing a set of decoupled oscillators.

A basis for large operators in N=4 SYM with orthogonal gauge group

We develop techniques to study the correlation functions of "large operators" whose bare dimension grows parametrically with N, in SO(N) gauge theory. We build the operators from a single complex matrix. For these operators, the large N limit of correlation functions is not captured by summing only the planar diagrams. By employing group representation theory we are able to define local operators which generalize the Schur polynomials of the theory with gauge group U(N). We compute the two point function of our operators exactly in the free field limit showing that they diagonalize the two point function. We explain how these results can be used to obtain the exact free field answers for correlators of operators in the trace basis.

Higher Loop Nonplanar Anomalous Dimensions from Symmetry

In this article we study the action of the one loop dilatation operator on operators with a classical dimension of order N. These operators belong to the su(2) sector and are constructed using two complex fields Y and Z. For these operators non-planar diagrams contribute already at the leading order in N and the planar and large N limits are distinct. The action of the one loop and the two loop dilatation operator reduces to a set of decoupled oscillators and factorizes into an action on the Z fields and an action on the Y fields. Direct computation has shown that the action on the Y fields is the same at one and two loops. In this article, using the su(2) symmetry algebra as well as structural features of field theory, we give compelling evidence that the factor in the dilatation operator that acts on the Ys is given by the one loop expression, at any loop order.

On the refined counting of graphs on surfaces

Ribbon graphs embedded on a Riemann surface provide a useful way to describe the double line Feynman diagrams of large N computations and a variety of other QFT correlator and scattering amplitude calculations, e.g in MHV rules for scattering amplitudes, as well as in ordinary QED. Their counting is a special case of the counting of bi-partite embedded graphs. We review and extend relevant mathematical literature and present results on the counting of some infinite classes of bi-partite graphs. Permutation groups and representations as well as double cosets and quotients of graphs are useful mathematical tools. The counting results are refined according to data of physical relevance, such as the structure of the vertices, faces and genus of the embedded graph. These counting problems can be expressed in terms of observables in three-dimensional topological field theory with S_d gauge group which gives them a topological membrane interpretation.

Operators, Correlators and Free Fermions for SO(N) and Sp(N)

Using the recently constructed basis for local operators in free SO(N) gauge theory we derive an exact formula for the correlation functions of multi trace operators. This formula is used to obtain a simpler form and a simple product rule for the operators in the SO(N) basis. The coefficients of the product rule are the Littlewood-Richardson numbers which determine the corresponding product rule in free U(N) gauge theory. SO(N) gauge theory is dual to a non-oriented string theory on the AdS_5xRP^5 geometry. To explore the physics of this string theory we consider the limit of the gauge theory that, for the U(N) gauge theory, is dual to the pp-wave limit of AdS_5xS^5. Non-planar unoriented ribbon diagrams do not survive this limit. We give arguments that the number of operators in our basis matches counting using the exact free field partition function of free SO(N) gauge theory. We connect the basis we have constructed to free fermions, which has a natural interpretation in terms of a class of 1/2-BPS bubbling geometries, which arise as orientifolds of type IIB string theory. Finally, we obtain a complete generalization of these results to Sp(N) gauge theory by proving that the finite N physics of SO(N) and Sp(N) gauge theory are related by exchanging symmetrizations and antisymmetrizations and replacing N by -N.

A double coset ansatz for integrability in AdS/CFT

We give a proof that the expected counting of strings attached to giant graviton branes in AdS_5 x S^5, as constrained by the Gauss Law, matches the dimension spanned by the expected dual operators in the gauge theory. The counting of string-brane configurations is formulated as a graph counting problem, which can be expressed as the number of points on a double coset involving permutation groups. Fourier transformation on the double coset suggests an ansatz for the diagonalization of the one-loop dilatation operator in this sector of strings attached to giant graviton branes. The ansatz agrees with and extends recent results which have found the dynamics of open string excitations of giants to be given by harmonic oscillators. We prove that it provides the conjectured diagonalization leading to harmonic oscillators.

Beyond the Planar Limit in ABJM

In this article we consider gauge theories with a U(N)X U(N) gauge group. We provide, for the first time, a complete set of operators built from scalar fields that are in the bi fundamental of the two groups. Our operators diagonalize the two point function of the free field theory at all orders in 1/N. We then use this basis to investigate non-planar anomalous dimensions in the ABJM theory. We show that the dilatation operator reduces to a set of decoupled harmonic oscillators, signaling integrability in a nonplanar large N limit.

Extremal vs. Non-Extremal Correlators with Giant Gravitons

We consider extremal and non-extremal three-point functions of two giant gravitons and one point-like graviton using Schur polynomials in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and holographically, using a semiclassical Born-Infeld analysis as well as bubbling geometries. For non-extremal three-point functions our computations using all three approaches are in perfect agreement. For extremal correlators we find that our results from the bubbling geometry analysis agree with existing results from the gauge theory. The semiclassical Born-Infeld computation for the extremal case is known to give a different answer, which we interpret as a manifestation of the known subtlety of holography for extremal correlators.

Large N anomalous dimensions for large operators in Leigh-Strassler deformed SYM

We study the large N anomalous dimensions of operators in a Leigh-Strassler deformation of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. The operators that we study have a bare dimension of order N (so that the large N limit is not captured by planar diagrams) and are AdS/CFT dual to giant gravitons. The diagonalization of the dilatation operator factorizes into two problems. One of these problems is solved using a double coset ansatz. The second problem is equivalent to a set of decoupled harmonic oscillators.

Nonplanar integrability at two loops

In this article we compute the action of the two loop dilatation operator on restricted Schur polynomials that belong to the su(2) sector, in the displaced corners approximation. In this non-planar large N limit, operators that diagonalize the one loop dilatation operator are not corrected at two loops. The resulting spectrum of anomalous dimensions is related to a set of decoupled harmonic oscillators, indicating integrability in this sector of the theory at two loops. The anomalous dimensions are a non-trivial function of the 't Hooft coupling, with a spectrum that is continuous and starting at zero at large N, but discrete at finite N.

Restricted Schur Polynomials for Fermions and integrability in the su(2|3) sector

We define restricted Schur polynomials built using both fermionic and bosonic fields which transform in the adjoint of the gauge group U(N). We show that these operators diagonalize the free field two point function to all orders in 1/N. As an application of our new operators, we study the action of the one loop dilatation operator in the su(2|3) sector in a large N but non-planar limit. The restricted Schur polynomials we study are dual to giant gravitons. We find that the one loop dilatation operator can be diagonalized using a double coset ansatz. The resulting spectrum of anomalous dimensions matches the spectrum of a set of decoupled oscillators. Finally, in an Appendix we study the action of the one loop dilatation operator in an sl(2) sector. This action is again diagonalized by a double coset ansatz.

S=1 in O(N)/HS duality

Following the work of Maldacena and Zhiboedov, we study the implementation of the Coleman-Mandula theorem in the free O(N)/Higher Spin correspondence. In the bi-local framework we first define an S-matrix for scattering of collective dipoles. Its evaluation in the case of free UV fixed point theory leads to the result S=1 stated in the title. We also present an appropriate field transformation that is seen to transform away all the non-linear 1/N interactions of this theory. A change of boundary conditions and/or external potentials results in a nontrivial S-matrix.

Strings from Feynman Graph counting : without large N

A well-known connection between n strings winding around a circle and permutations of n objects plays a fundamental role in the string theory of large N two dimensional Yang Mills theory and elsewhere in topological and physical string theories. Basic questions in the enumeration of Feynman graphs can be expressed elegantly in terms of permutation groups. We show that these permutation techniques for Feynman graph enumeration, along with the Burnside counting lemma, lead to equalities between counting problems of Feynman graphs in scalar field theories and Quantum Electrodynamics with the counting of amplitudes in a string theory with torus or cylinder target space. This string theory arises in the large N expansion of two dimensional Yang Mills and is closely related to lattice gauge theory with S_n gauge group. We collect and extend results on generating functions for Feynman graph counting, which connect directly with the string picture. We propose that the connection between string combinatorics and permutations has implications for QFT-string dualities, beyond the framework of large N gauge theory.

From Large N Nonplanar Anomalous Dimensions to Open Spring Theory

In this note we compute the non-planar one loop anomalous dimension of restricted Schur polynomials that have a bare dimension of O(N). This is achieved by mapping the restricted Schur polynomials into states of a specific U(N) irreducible representation. In this way the dilatation operator is mapped into a u(n) valued operator and, as a result, can easily be diagonalized. The resulting spectrum is reproduced by a classical model of springs between masses.

Giant Graviton Oscillators

We study the action of the dilatation operator on restricted Schur polynomials labeled by Young diagrams with p long columns or p long rows. A new version of Schur-Weyl duality provides a powerful approach to the computation and manipulation of the symmetric group operators appearing in the restricted Schur polynomials. Using this new technology, we are able to evaluate the action of the one loop dilatation operator. The result has a direct and natural connection to the Gauss Law constraint for branes with a compact world volume. We find considerable evidence that the dilatation operator reduces to a decoupled set of harmonic oscillators. This strongly suggests that integrability in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory is not just a feature of the planar limit, but extends to other large N but non-planar limits.

Non-planar Anomalous Dimensions in the sl(2) Sector

In this note we compute the non-planar one loop anomalous dimension of restricted Schur polynomials that belong to the sl(2) sector of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and have a bare dimension of order N. Although the details are rather different, ultimately the problem of diagonalizing the dilatation operator in the sl(2) sector can be reduced to the su(2) sector problem. In this way we establish the expected dynamical emergence of the Gauss Law for giant gravitons and further show that the dilatation operator reduces to a set of decoupled harmonic oscillators.

Nonplanar Integrability

In this article we study operators with a dimension $Δ\sim O(N)$ and show that simple analytic expressions for the action of the dilatation operator can be found. The operators we consider are restricted Schur polynomials. There are two distinct classes of operators that we consider: operators labeled by Young diagrams with two long columns or two long rows. The main complication in working with restricted Schur polynomials is in building a projector from a given $S_{n+m}$ irreducible representation to an $S_n\times S_m$ irreducible representation (both specified by the labels of the restricted Schur polynomial). We give an explicit construction of these projectors by reducing it to the simple problem of addition of angular momentum in ordinary non-relativistic quantum mechanics. The diagonalizationof the dilatation operator reduces to solving three term recursion relations. The fact that the recursion relations have only three terms is a direct consequence of the weak mixing at one loop of the restricted Schur polynomials. The recursion relations can be solved exactly in terms of symmetric Kravchuk polynomials or in terms of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. This proves that the dilatation operator reduces to a decoupled set of harmonic oscillators and therefore it is integrable.

Nonplanar Integrability: Beyond the SU(2) Sector

We compute the one loop anomalous dimensions of restricted Schur polynomials with a classical dimension Δ\sim O(N). The operators that we consider are labeled by Young diagrams with two long columns or two long rows. Simple analytic expressions for the action of the dilatation operator are found. The projection operators needed to define the restricted Schur polynomials are constructed by translating the problem into a spin chain language, generalizing earlier results obtained in the SU(2) sector of the theory. The diagonalization of the dilatation operator reduces to solving five term recursion relations. The recursion relations can be solved exactly in terms of products of symmetric Kravchuk polynomials with Hahn polynomials. This proves that the dilatation operator reduces to a decoupled set of harmonic oscillators and therefore it is integrable, extending a similar conclusion reached for the SU(2) sector of the theory.

On subgroup adapted bases for representations of the symmetric group

The split basis of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group, $S_{n+m}$, is the basis which is adapted to direct product subgroups of the form $S_{n} \times S_{m}$. In this article we have calculated symmetric group subduction coefficients relating the standard Young-Yamanouchi basis for the symmetric group to the split basis by means of a novel version of the Schur-Weyl duality. We have also directly obtained matrix representations in the split basis using these techniques. The advantages of this approach are that we obtain analytical expressions for the subduction coefficients and matrix representations and directly resolve issues of multiplicity in the subduction of $S_{n} \times S_{m}$ irreducible representations from $S_{n+m}$ irreducible representations. Our method is applicable to $S_{n+m}$ irreducible representations labelled by Young diagrams with large row length differences. We provide evidence for a systematic expansion in the inverse row length difference and tools to compute the leading contribution, which is exact when row length differences are infinite.

AdS_4/CFT_3 Construction from Collective Fields

We pursue the construction of higher-spin theory in AdS_4 from CFT_3 of the O(N) vector model in terms of canonical collective fields. In null plane quantization an exact map is established between the two spaces. The coordinates of the AdS_4 space-time are generated from the collective coordinates of the bi-local field. This, in the light cone gauge, provides an exact one to one reconstruction of bulk AdS_4 space-time and higher-spin fields.

Emergent Threebrane Lattices

In this article the anomalous dimension of a class of operators with a bare dimension of O(N) is studied. The operators considered are dual to excited states of a two giant graviton system. In the Yang Mills theory they are described by restricted Schur polynomials, labeled with Young diagrams that have at most two columns. In a certain limit the dilatation operator looks like a lattice version of a second derivative, with the lattice emerging from the Young diagram itself.

From Matrix Models and quantum fields to Hurwitz space and the absolute Galois group

We show that correlators of the hermitian one-Matrix model with a general potential can be mapped to the counting of certain triples of permutations and hence to counting of holomorphic maps from world-sheet to sphere target with three branch points on the target. This allows the use of old matrix model results to derive new explicit formulae for a class of Hurwitz numbers. Holomorphic maps with three branch points are related, by Belyi's theorem, to curves and maps defined over algebraic numbers $\bmQ$. This shows that the string theory dual of the one-matrix model at generic couplings has worldsheets defined over the algebraic numbers and a target space $ \mP^1 (\bmQ)$. The absolute Galois group $ Gal (\bmQ / \mQ) $ acts on the Feynman diagrams of the 1-matrix model, which are related to Grothendieck's Dessins d'Enfants. Correlators of multi-matrix models are mapped to the counting of triples of permutations subject to equivalences defined by subgroups of the permutation groups. This is related to colorings of the edges of the Grothendieck Dessins. The colored-edge Dessins are useful as a tool for describing some known invariants of the $ Gal (\bmQ / \mQ) $ action on Grothendieck Dessins and for defining new invariants.

Correlators in Nontrivial Backgrounds

Operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with an R-charge of O(N^2) are dual to backgrounds which are asymtotically AdS5xS5. In this article we develop efficient techniques that allow the computation of correlation functions in these backgrounds. We find that (i) contractions between fields in the string words and fields in the operator creating the background are the field theory accounting of the new geometry, (ii) correlation functions of probes in these backgrounds are given by the free field theory contractions but with rescaled propagators and (iii) in these backgrounds there are no open string excitations with their special end point interactions; we have only closed string excitations.

Hints of Integrability Beyond the Planar Limit: Nontrivial Backgrounds

The problem of computing the anomalous dimensions of a class of (nearly) half-BPS operators with a large R-charge is reduced to the problem of diagonalizing a Cuntz oscillator chain. Due to the large dimension of the operators we consider, non-planar corrections must be summed to correctly construct the Cuntz oscillator dynamics. These non-planar corrections do not represent quantum corrections in the dual gravitational theory, but rather, they account for the backreaction from the heavy operator whose dimension we study. Non-planar corrections accounting for quantum corrections seem to spoil integrability, in general. It is interesting to ask if non-planar corrections that account for the backreaction also spoil integrability. We find a limit in which our Cuntz chain continues to admit extra conserved charges suggesting that integrability might survive.

Giant Gravitons - with Strings Attached (I)

In this article, the free field theory limit of operators dual to giant gravitons with open strings attached are studied. We introduce a graphical notation, which employs Young diagrams, for these operators. The computation of two point correlation functions is reduced to the application of three simple rules, written as graphical operations performed on the Young diagram labels of the operators. Using this technology, we have studied gravitational radiation by giant gravitons and bound states of giant gravitons, transitions between excited giant graviton states and joining of open strings attached to the giant.

On Exponential corrections to the 1/N expansion in two-dimensional Yang Mills theory

We compute $e^{-AN}$ corrections to the Gross-Taylor 1/N expansion of the paritition function of two-dimensional SU(N) and U(N) Yang Mills theory. We find a very similar structure of mixing between holomorphic and anti-holomorphic sectors as that described by Vafa for the 1/N expansion. Some of the non-perturbative terms are suggestive of D-strings wrapping the $T^2$ of the 2dYM but blowing up into a fuzzy geometry by the Myers effect in the directions transverse to the $T^2$.

Lumps in level truncated open string field theory

The ratios of the masses of D(p-d) branes to the masses of Dp in open bosonic string field theory are computed within the modified level truncation approximation of Moeller, Sen and Zweibach. At the lowest non-trivial truncation requiring the addition of new primary states, we find evidence of rapid convergence to the expected result for 1<d<7 providing additional evidence for the consistency of this approximation.
