BCFT and Islands in Two Dimensions

By combining the AdS/BCFT correspondence and the brane world holography, we expect an equivalence relation between a boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) and a gravitational system coupled to a CFT. However, it still remains unclear how the boundary condition of the BCFT is translated in the gravitational system. We examine this duality relation in a two-dimensional setup by looking at the computation of entanglement entropy and energy flux conservation. We also identify the two-dimensional gravity which is dual to the boundary dynamics of a BCFT. Moreover, we show that by considering a gravity solution with scalar fields turned on, we can reproduce one point functions correctly in the AdS/BCFT.

CFT duals of three-dimensional de Sitter gravity

We present a class of dS/CFT correspondence between two-dimensional CFTs and three-dimensional de Sitter spaces. We argue that such a CFT includes an SU$(2)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -2$, which corresponds to the classical gravity limit. We can generalize this dS/CFT by considering the SU$(N)$ WZW model in the critical level limit $k\to -N$, dual to the higher-spin gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We confirm that under this proposed duality the classical partition function in the gravity side can be reproduced from CFT calculations. We also point out a duality relation known in higher-spin holography provides further evidence. Moreover, we analyze two-point functions and entanglement entropy in our dS/CFT correspondence. Possible spectrum and quantum corrections in the gravity theory are discussed.

Holographic Local Operator Quenches in BCFTs

We present a gravity dual of local operator quench in a two-dimensional CFT with conformal boundaries. This is given by a massive excitation in a three-dimensional AdS space with the end of the world brane (EOW brane). Due to the gravitational backreaction, the EOW brane gets deformed in a nontrivial way. We show that the energy-momentum tensor and entanglement entropy computed from the gravity dual and from the BCFT in the large $c$ limit match perfectly. Interestingly, this comparison avoids the folding of the EOW brane in an elegant way.

Wedge Holography in Flat Space and Celestial Holography

In this paper, we study codimension two holography in flat spacetimes, based on the idea of the wedge holography. We propose that a region in a $d+1$ dimensional flat spacetime surrounded by two end of the world-branes, which are given by $d$ dimensional hyperbolic spaces, is dual to a conformal field theory (CFT) on a $d-1$ dimensional sphere. Similarly, we also propose that a $d+1$ dimensional region in the flat spacetime bounded by two $d$ dimensional de Sitter spaces is holographically dual to a CFT on a $d-1$ dimensional sphere. Our calculations of the partition function, holographic entanglement entropy and two point functions, support these duality relations and imply that such CFTs are non-unitary. Finally, we glue these two dualities along null surfaces to realize a codimension two holography for a full Minkowski spacetime and discuss a possible connection to the celestial holography.

Zoo of holographic moving mirrors

We systematically study moving mirror models in two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). By focusing on their late-time behavior, we separate the mirror profiles into four classes, named type A (timelike) mirrors, type B (escaping) mirrors, type C (chasing) mirrors, and type D (terminated) mirrors. We analytically explore the characteristic features of the energy flux and entanglement entropy for each type and work out their physical interpretation. Moreover, we construct their gravity duals for which end-of-the-world (EOW) branes play a crucial role. Depending on the mirror type, the profiles of the EOW branes show distinct behaviors. In addition, we also provide a criterion that decides whether the replica method in CFTs computes entanglement entropy or pseudo entropy in moving mirror models.

Codimension two holography for wedges

We propose a codimension two holography between a gravitational theory on a $d+1$ dimensional wedge spacetime and a $d-1$ dimensional CFT which lives on the corner of the wedge. Formulating this as a generalization of AdS/CFT, we explain how to compute the free energy, entanglement entropy and correlation functions of the dual CFTs from gravity. In this wedge holography, the holographic entanglement entropy is computed by a double minimization procedure. Especially, for a four dimensional gravity ($d=3$), we obtain a two dimensional CFT and the holographic entanglement entropy perfectly reproduces the known result expected from the holographic conformal anomaly. We also discuss a lower dimensional example ($d=2$) and find that a universal quantity naturally arises from gravity, which is analogous to the boundary entropy. Moreover, we consider a gravity on a wedge region in Lorentzian AdS, which is expected to be dual to a CFT with a space-like boundary. We formulate this new holography and compute the holographic entanglement entropy via a Wick rotation of the AdS/BCFT construction. Via a conformal map, this wedge spacetime is mapped into a geometry where a bubble-of-nothing expands under time evolution. We reproduce the holographic entanglement entropy for this gravity dual via CFT calculations.

Holographic Pseudo Entropy

We introduce a quantity, called pseudo entropy, as a generalization of entanglement entropy via post-selection. In the AdS/CFT correspondence, this quantity is dual to areas of minimal area surfaces in time-dependent Euclidean spaces which are asymptotically AdS. We study its basic properties and classifications in qubit systems. In specific examples, we provide a quantum information theoretic meaning of this new quantity as an averaged number of Bell pairs when the post-selection is performed. We also present properties of the pseudo entropy for random states. We then calculate the pseudo entropy in the presence of local operator excitations for both the two dimensional free massless scalar CFT and two dimensional holographic CFTs. We find a general property in CFTs that the pseudo entropy is highly reduced when the local operators get closer to the boundary of the subsystem. We also compute the holographic pseudo entropy for a Janus solution, dual to an exactly marginal perturbation of a two dimensional CFT and find its agreement with a perturbative calculation in the dual CFT. We show the linearity property holds for holographic states, where the holographic pseudo entropy coincides with a weak value of the area operator. Finally, we propose a mixed state generalization of pseudo entropy and give its gravity dual.

Holography in de Sitter Space via Chern-Simons Gauge Theory

In this paper we propose a holographic duality for classical gravity on a three-dimensional de Sitter space. We first show that a pair of SU$(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theories reproduces the classical partition function of Einstein gravity on a Euclidean de Sitter space, namely $\mathbb{S}^3$, when we take the limit where the level $k$ approaches $-2$. This implies that the CFT dual of gravity on a de Sitter space at the leading semi-classical order is given by an SU$(2)$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model in the large central charge limit $k\to -2$. We give another evidence for this in the light of known holography for coset CFTs. We also present a higher spin gravity extension of our duality.

On the Page curve under final state projection

The black hole singularity plays a crucial role in formulating Hawking's information paradox. The global spacetime analysis may be reconciled with unitarity by imposing a final state boundary condition on the spacelike singularity. Motivated by the final state proposal, we explore the effect of final state projection in two dimensional conformal field theories. We calculate the time evolution under postselection by employing the real part of pseudo-entropy to estimate the amount of quantum entanglement averaged over histories between the initial and final states. We find that this quantity possesses a Page curve-like behavior.

Pseudo Entropy in Free Quantum Field Theories

Pseudo entropy is an interesting quantity with a simple gravity dual, which generalizes entanglement entropy such that it depends on both an initial and a final state. Here we reveal the basic properties of pseudo entropy in quantum field theories by numerically calculating this quantity for a set of two-dimensional free scalar field theories and the Ising spin chain. We extend the Gaussian method for pseudo entropy in free scalar theories with two parameters: mass $m$ and dynamical exponent $z$. This computation finds two novel properties of Pseudo entropy which we conjecture to be universal in field theories, in addition to an area law behavior. One is a saturation behavior and the other one is non-positivity of the difference between pseudo entropy and averaged entanglement entropy. Moreover, our numerical results for the Ising chain imply that pseudo entropy can play a role as a new quantum order parameter which detects whether two states are in the same quantum phase or not.

Cobordism Conjecture in AdS

McNamara and Vafa conjectured that any pair of consistent quantum gravity theories can be connected by a domain wall. We test the conjecture in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. There are topological constraints on existence of an interface between the corresponding conformal field theories. We discuss how to construct domain walls in AdS predicted by the conjecture when the corresponding conformal interfaces are prohibited by topological obstructions.

Decoherence in Conformal Field Theory

Noise sources are ubiquitous in Nature and give rise to a description of quantum systems in terms of stochastic Hamiltonians. Decoherence dominates the noise-averaged dynamics and leads to dephasing and the decay of coherences in the eigenbasis of the fluctuating operator. For energy-diffusion processes stemming from fluctuations of the system Hamiltonian the characteristic decoherence time is shown to be proportional to the heat capacity. We analyze the decoherence dynamics of entangled CFTs and characterize the dynamics of the purity, and logarithmic negativity, that are shown to decay monotonically as a function of time. The converse is true for the quantum Renyi entropies. From the short-time asymptotics of the purity, the decoherence rate is identified and shown to be proportional to the central charge. The fixed point characterizing long times of evolution depends on the presence degeneracies in the energy spectrum. We show how information loss associated with decoherence can be attributed to its leakage to an auxiliary environment and discuss how gravity duals of decoherence dynamics in holographic CFTs looks like in AdS/CFT. We find that the inner horizon region of eternal AdS black hole is highly squeezed due to decoherence.

Entanglement entropy in holographic moving mirror and Page curve

We calculate the time evolution of entanglement entropy in two dimensional conformal field theory with a moving mirror. For a setup modeling Hawking radiation, we obtain a linear growth of entanglement entropy and show that this can be interpreted as the production of entangled pairs. For a setup, which mimics black hole formation and evaporation, we find that the evolution follows the ideal Page curve. We perform these computations by constructing the gravity dual of the moving mirror model via holography. We also argue that our holographic setup provides a concrete model to derive the Page curve for black hole radiation in the strong coupling regime of gravity.

Gravity Edges Modes and Hayward Term

We argue that corner contributions in gravity action (Hayward term) capture the essence of gravity edge modes, which lead to gravitational area entropies, such as the black hole entropy and holographic entanglement entropy. We explain how the Hayward term and the corresponding edge modes in gravity are explained by holography from two different viewpoints. One is an extension of AdS/CFT to general spacetimes and the other is the AdS/BCFT formulation. In the final part, we explore how gravity edge modes and its entropy show up in string theory by considering open strings stuck to a Rindler horizon.

Double Local Quenches in 2D CFTs and Gravitational Force

In this work we extensively study the dynamics of excited states created by instantaneous local quenches at two different points, i.e., double local quenches. We focus on setups in two dimensional holographic and free Dirac fermion CFTs. We calculate the energy stress tensor and entanglement entropy for double joining and splitting local quenches. In the splitting local quenches we find an interesting oscillating behaviors. Finally, we study the energy stress tensor in double operator local quenches. In all these examples, we find that, in general, there are non-trivial interactions between the two local quenches. Especially, in holographic CFTs, the differences of the above quantities between the double local quench and the simple sum of two local quenches tend to be negative. We interpret this behavior as merely due to gravitational force in their gravity duals.

Causal Evolutions of Bulk Local Excitations from CFT

Bulk localized excited states in an AdS spacetime can be constructed from Ishibashi states with respect to the global conformal symmetry in the dual CFT. We study boundary two point functions of primary operators in the presence of bulk localized excitations in two dimensional CFTs. From two point functions in holographic CFTs, we observe causal propagations of radiations when the mass of dual bulk scalar field is close to the BF bound. This behavior for holographic CFTs is consistent with the locality and causality in classical gravity duals. We also show that this cannot be seen in free fermion CFTs. Moreover, we find that the short distance behavior of two point functions is universal and obeys the relation which generalizes the first law of entanglement entropy.

EPR Pairs, Local Projections and Quantum Teleportation in Holography

In this paper we analyze three quantum operations in two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs): local projection measurements, creations of partial entanglement between two CFTs, and swapping of subsystems between two CFTs. We also give their holographic duals and study time evolutions of entanglement entropy. By combining these operations, we present an analogue of quantum teleportation between two CFTs and give its holographic realization. We introduce a new quantity to probe tripartite entanglement by using local projection measurement.

cMERA as Surface/State Correspondence in AdS/CFT

We present how the surface/state correspondence, conjectured in arXiv:1503.03542, works in the setup of AdS3/CFT2 by generalizing the formulation of cMERA. The boundary states in conformal field theories play a crucial role in our formulation and the bulk diffeomorphism is naturally taken into account. We give an identification of bulk local operators which reproduces correct scalar field solutions on AdS3 and bulk scalar propagators. We also calculate the information metric for a locally excited state and show that it is given by that of 2d hyperbolic manifold, which is argued to describe the time slice of AdS3.

Double-Trace Deformations and Entanglement Entropy in AdS

We compute the bulk entanglement entropy of a massive scalar field in a Poincare AdS with the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary condition when we trace out a half space. Moreover, by taking into account the quantum back reaction to the minimal surface area, we calculate how much the entanglement entropy changes under a double-trace deformation of a holographic CFT. In the AdS3/CFT2 setup, our result agrees with the known result in 2d CFTs. In higher dimensions, our results offer holographic predictions.

Entanglement density and gravitational thermodynamics

In an attempt to find a quasi-local measure of quantum entanglement, we introduce the concept of entanglement density in relativistic quantum theories. This density is defined in terms of infinitesimal variations of the region whose entanglement we monitor, and in certain cases can be mapped to the variations of the generating points of the associated domain of dependence. We argue that strong sub-additivity constrains the entanglement density to be positive semi-definite. Examining this density in the holographic context, we map its positivity to a statement of integrated null energy condition in the gravity dual. We further speculate that this may be mapped to a statement analogous to the second law of black hole thermodynamics, for the extremal surface.

Notes on Entanglement Entropy in String Theory

In this paper, we study the entanglement entropy in string theory in the simplest setup of dividing the nine dimensional space into two halves. This corresponds to the leading quantum correction to the horizon entropy in string theory on the Rindler space. This entropy is also called the conical entropy and includes surface term contributions. We first derive a new simple formula of the conical entropy for any free higher spin fields. Then we apply this formula to computations of conical entropy in open and closed superstring. In our analysis of closed string, we study the twisted conical entropy defined by making use of string theory on Melvin backgrounds. This quantity is easier to calculate owing to the folding trick. Our analysis shows that the entanglement entropy in closed superstring is UV finite owing to the string scale cutoff.

Scrambling time from local perturbations of the eternal BTZ black hole

We compute the mutual information between finite intervals in two non-compact 2d CFTs in the thermofield double formulation after one of them has been locally perturbed by a primary operator at some time $t_ω$ in the large $c$ limit. We determine the time scale, called the scrambling time, at which the mutual information vanishes and the original entanglement between the thermofield double gets destroyed by the perturbation. We provide a holographic description in terms of a free falling particle in the eternal BTZ black hole that exactly matches our CFT calculations. Our results hold for any time $t_ω$. In particular, when the latter is large, they reproduce the bulk shock-wave propagation along the BTZ horizon description.

Surface/State Correspondence as a Generalized Holography

We propose a new duality relation between codimension two space-like surfaces in gravitational theories and quantum states in dual Hilbert spaces. This surface/state correspondence largely generalizes the idea of holography such that we do not need to rely on any existence of boundaries in gravitational spacetimes. The present idea is motivated by the recent interpretation of AdS/CFT in terms of the tensor networks so called MERA. Moreover, we study this correspondence from the viewpoint of entanglement entropy and information metric. The Cramer-Rao bound in quantum estimation theory implies that the quantum fluctuations of radial coordinate of the AdS is highly suppressed in the large N limit.

Boundary States as Holographic Duals of Trivial Spacetimes

We study real-space quantum entanglement included in conformally invariant boundary states in conformal field theories (CFTs). First, we argue that boundary states essentially have no real-space entanglement by computing the entanglement entropy when we bipartite the system into two spatial regions. From the viewpoint of holography, this shows that boundary states are dual to trivial spacetimes of zero spactime volume. Next, we point out that a continuous multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) for any CFTs can be formulated by employing a boundary state as its infrared unentangled state with an appropriate regularization. Exploiting this idea, we propose an approximation scheme of cMERA construction for general CFTs.

Entanglement between Two Interacting CFTs and Generalized Holographic Entanglement Entropy

In this paper we discuss behaviors of entanglement entropy between two interacting CFTs and its holographic interpretation using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We explicitly perform analytical calculations of entanglement entropy between two free scalar field theories which are interacting with each other in both static and time-dependent ways. We also conjecture a holographic calculation of entanglement entropy between two interacting $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theories by introducing a minimal surface in the S$^5$ direction, instead of the AdS$_5$ direction. This offers a possible generalization of holographic entanglement entropy.

Entanglement of Local Operators in large N CFTs

We study Renyi and von-Neumann entanglement entropy of excited states created by local operators in large N (or large central charge) CFTs. First we point that a naive large N expansion can break down for the von-Neumann entanglement entropy, while it does not for the Renyi entanglement entropy. This happens even for the excited states in free Yang-Mills theories. Next, we analyze strongly coupled large N CFTs from both field theoretic and holographic viewpoints. We find that the Renyi entanglement entropy of the excited state produced by a local operator, grows logarithmically under its time evolution and its coefficient is proportional to the conformal dimension of the local operator.

Quantum Dimension as Entanglement Entropy in 2D CFTs

We study entanglement entropy of excited states in two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs). Especially we consider excited states obtained by acting primary operators on a vacuum. We show that under its time evolution, entanglement entropy increases by a finite constant when the causality condition is satisfied. Moreover, in rational CFTs, we prove that this increased amount of (both Renyi and von-Neumann) entanglement entropy always coincides with the log of quantum dimension of the primary operator.

Quantum Entanglement of Local Operators in Conformal Field Theories

We introduce a series of quantities which characterizes a given local operator in conformal field theories from the viewpoint of quantum entanglement. It is defined by the increased amount of (Renyi) entanglement entropy at late time for an excited state defined by acting the local operator on the vacuum. We consider a conformal field theory on an infinite space and take the subsystem in the definition of the entanglement entropy to be its half. We calculate these quantities for a free massless scalar field theory in 2, 4 and 6 dimensions. We find that these results are interpreted in terms of quantum entanglement of finite number states, including EPR states. They agree with a heuristic picture of propagations of entangled particles.

Quantum Entanglement of Localized Excited States at Finite Temperature

In this work we study the time evolutions of (Renyi) entanglement entropy of locally excited states in two dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) at finite temperature. We consider excited states created by acting with local operators on thermal states and give both field theoretic and holographic calculations. In free field CFTs, we find that the growth of Renyi entanglement entropy at finite temperature is reduced compared to the zero temperature result by a small quantity proportional to the width of the localized excitations. On the other hand, in finite temperature CFTs with classical gravity duals, we find that the entanglement entropy approaches a characteristic value at late time. This behaviour does not occur at zero temperature. We also study the mutual information between the two CFTs in the thermofield double (TFD) formulation and give physical interpretations of our results.

AdS plane waves and entanglement entropy

AdS plane waves describe simple backgrounds which are dual to anisotropically excited systems with energy fluxes. Upon dimensional reduction, they reduce to hyperscaling violating spacetimes: in particular, the $AdS_5$ plane wave is known to exhibit logarithmic behavior of the entanglement entropy. In this paper, we carry out an extensive study of the holographic entanglement entropy for strip-shaped subsystems in AdS plane wave backgrounds. We find that the results depend crucially on whether the strip is parallel or orthogonal to the energy current. In the latter case, we show that there is a phenomenon analogous to a phase transition.

Dynamics of Entanglement Entropy from Einstein Equation

We study the dynamics of entanglement entropy for weakly excited states in conformal field theories by using the AdS/CFT. This is aimed at a first step to find a counterpart of Einstein equation in the CFT language. In particular, we point out that the entanglement entropy satisfies differential equations which directly correspond to the Einstein equation in several setups of AdS/CFT. We also define a quantity called entanglement density in higher dimensional field theories and study its dynamical property for weakly excited states in conformal field theories.

Entropic Counterpart of Perturbative Einstein Equation

Entanglement entropy in a field theory, with a holographic dual, may be viewed as a quantity which encodes the diffeomorphism invariant bulk gravity dynamics. This, in particular, indicates that the bulk Einstein equations would imply some constraints for the boundary entanglement entropy. In this paper we focus on the change in entanglement entropy, for small but arbitrary fluctuations about a given state, and analyze the constraints imposed on it by the perturbative Einstein equations, linearized about the corresponding bulk state. Specifically, we consider linear fluctuations about BTZ black hole in 3 dimension, pure AdS and AdS Schwarzschild black holes in 4 dimensions and obtain a diffeomorphism invariant reformulation of linearized Einstein equation in terms of holographic entanglement entropy. We will also show that entanglement entropy for boosted subsystems provides the information about all the components of the metric with a time index.

Holographic Geometry of cMERA for Quantum Quenches and Finite Temperature

We study the time evolution of cMERA (continuous MERA) under quantum quenches in free field theories. We calculate the corresponding holographic metric using the proposal of arXiv:1208.3469 and confirm that it qualitatively agrees with its gravity dual given by a half of the AdS black hole spacetime, argued by Hartman and Maldacena in arXiv:1303.1080. By doubling the cMERA for the quantum quench, we give an explicit construction of finite temperature cMERA. We also study cMERA in the presence of chemical potential and show that there is an enhancement of metric in the infrared region corresponding to the Fermi energy.

Holographic Local Quenches and Entanglement Density

We propose a free falling particle in an AdS space as a holographic model of local quench. Local quenches are triggered by local excitations in a given quantum system. We calculate the time-evolution of holographic entanglement entropy. We confirm a logarithmic time-evolution, which is known to be typical in two dimensional local quenches. To study the structure of quantum entanglement in general quantum systems, we introduce a new quantity which we call entanglement density and apply this analysis to quantum quenches. We show that this quantity is directly related to the energy density in a small size limit. Moreover, we find a simple relationship between the amount of quantum information possessed by a massive object and its total energy based on the AdS/CFT.

Volume Law for the Entanglement Entropy in Non-local QFTs

In this paper, we present a simple class of non-local field theories whose ground state entanglement entropy follows a volume law as long as the size of subsystem is smaller than a certain scale. We will confirm this volume law both from numerical calculations and from analytical estimation. This behavior fits nicely with holographic results for spacetimes whose curvatures are much smaller than AdS spaces such as those in the flat spacetime.

A Covariant Holographic Entanglement Entropy Proposal

With an aim towards understanding the time-dependence of entanglement entropy in generic quantum field theories, we propose a covariant generalization of the holographic entanglement entropy proposal of hep-th/0603001. Apart from providing several examples of possible covariant generalizations, we study a particular construction based on light-sheets, motivated in similar spirit to the covariant entropy bound underlying the holographic principle. In particular, we argue that the entanglement entropy associated with a specified region on the boundary in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence is given by the area of a co-dimension two bulk surface with vanishing expansions of null geodesics. We demonstrate our construction with several examples to illustrate its reduction to the holographic entanglement entropy proposal in static spacetimes. We further show how this proposal may be used to understand the time evolution of entanglement entropy in a time varying QFT state dual to a collapsing black hole background. Finally, we use our proposal to argue that the Euclidean wormhole geometries with multiple boundaries should be regarded as states in a non-interacting but entangled set of QFTs, one associated to each boundary.

Central Charges for BCFTs and Holography

In this paper, we study the logarithmic terms in the partition functions of CFTs with boundaries (BCFTs). In three dimensions, their coefficients give the boundary central charges, which are conjectured to be monotonically decreasing functions under the RG flows. We present a few supporting evidences from field theory calculations. In two dimensions, we give a holographic construction (AdS/BCFT) for an arbitrary shape of boundary and calculate its logarithmic term as well as boundary energy momentum tensors, confirming its consistency with the Weyl anomaly. Moreover, we give perturbative solutions of gravity duals for the three dimensional BCFTs with any shapes of boundaries. We find that the standard Fefferman-Graham expansion breaks down for generic choices of BCFT boundaries.

Electromagnetic and thermal responses in topological matter: topological terms, quantum anomalies and D-branes

We discuss the thermal (or gravitational) responses in topological superconductors and in topological phases in general. Such thermal responses (as well as electromagnetic responses for conserved charge) provide a definition of topological insulators and superconductors beyond the single-particle picture. In two-dimensional topological phases, the Strěda formula for the electric Hall conductivity is generalized to the thermal Hall conductivity. Applying this formula to the Majorana surface states of three-dimensional topological superconductors predicts cross-correlated responses between the angular momentum and thermal polarization (entropy polarization). We also discuss a use of D-branes in string theory as a systematic tool to derive all such topological terms and topological responses. In particular, we relate the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index of topological insulators introduced by Kane and Mele (and its generalization to other symmetry classes and to arbitrary dimensions) to the K-theory charge of non-BPS D-branes, and vice versa. We thus establish a link between the stability of non-BPS D-branes and the topological stability of topological insulators.

Entanglement Entropy from a Holographic Viewpoint

The entanglement entropy has been historically studied by many authors in order to obtain quantum mechanical interpretations of the gravitational entropy. The discovery of AdS/CFT correspondence leads to the idea of holographic entanglement entropy, which is a clear solution to this important problem in gravity. In this article, we would like to give a quick survey of recent progresses on the holographic entanglement entropy. We focus on its gravitational aspects, so that it is comprehensible to those who are familiar with general relativity and basics of quantum field theory.

Holographic Fermi Surfaces and Entanglement Entropy

We argue that Landau-Fermi liquids do not have any gravity duals in the purely classical limit. We employ the logarithmic behavior of entanglement entropy to characterize the existence of Fermi surfaces. By imposing the null energy condition, we show that the specific heat always behaves anomalously. We also present a classical gravity dual which has the expected behavior of the entanglement entropy and specific heat for non-Fermi liquids.

Holographic Geometry of Entanglement Renormalization in Quantum Field Theories

We study a conjectured connection between the AdS/CFT and a real-space quantum renormalization group scheme, the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). By making a close contact with the holographic formula of the entanglement entropy, we propose a general definition of the metric in the MERA in the extra holographic direction, which is formulated purely in terms of quantum field theoretical data. Using the continuum version of the MERA (cMERA), we calculate this emergent holographic metric explicitly for free scalar boson and free fermions theories, and check that the metric so computed has the properties expected from AdS/CFT. We also discuss the cMERA in a time-dependent background induced by quantum quench and estimate its corresponding metric.

Soliton Stars as Holographic Confined Fermi Liquids

In this paper, we study a holographic dual of a confined fermi liquid state by putting a charged fluid of fermions in the AdS soliton geometry. This can be regarded as a confined analogue of electron stars. Depending on the parameters such as the mass and charge of the bulk fermion field, we found three different phase structures when we change the values of total charge density at zero temperature. In one of the three cases, our confined solution (called soliton star) is always stable and this solution approaches to the electron star away from the tip. In both the second and third case, we find a confinement/deconfinement phase transition. Moreover, in the third one, there is a strong indication that the soliton star decays into an inhomogeneous solution. We also analyze the probe fermion equations (in the WKB approximation) in the background of this soliton star geometry to confirm the presence of many fermi-surfaces in the system.

Thermodynamical Property of Entanglement Entropy for Excited States

We argue that the entanglement entropy for a very small subsystem obeys a property which is analogous to the first law of thermodynamics when we excite the system. In relativistic setups, its effective temperature is proportional to the inverse of the subsystem size. This provides a universal relationship between the energy and the amount of quantum information. We derive the results using holography and confirm them in two dimensional field theories. We will also comment on an example with negative specific heat and suggest a connection between the second law of thermodynamics and the strong subadditivity of entanglement entropy.

Aspects of AdS/BCFT

We expand the results of arXiv:1105.5165, where a holographic description of a conformal field theory defined on a manifold with boundaries (so called BCFT) was proposed, based on AdS/CFT. We construct gravity duals of conformal field theories on strips, balls and also time-dependent boundaries. We show a holographic g-theorem in any dimension. As a special example, we can define a `boundary central charge' in three dimensional conformal field theories and our holographic g-theorem argues that it decreases under RG flows. We also computed holographic one-point functions and confirmed that their scaling property agrees with field theory calculations. Finally, we give an example of string theory embedding of this holography by inserting orientifold 8-planes in AdS(4)xCP(3).

The main purpose of this paper is to holographically study the behavior of conductivity in 2+1 dimensional disordered systems. We analyze probe D-brane systems in AdS/CFT with random closed string and open string background fields. We give a prescription of calculating the DC conductivity holographically in disordered systems. In particular, we find an analytical formula of the conductivity in the presence of codimension one randomness. We also systematically study the AC conductivity in various probe brane setups without disorder and find analogues of Mott insulators.

Holographic Dual of BCFT

We propose a holographic dual of a conformal field theory defined on a manifold with boundaries, i.e. boundary conformal field theory (BCFT). Our new holography, which may be called AdS/BCFT, successfully calculates the boundary entropy or g-function in two dimensional BCFTs and it agrees with the finite part of the holographic entanglement entropy. Moreover, we can naturally derive a holographic g-theorem. We also analyze the holographic dual of an interval at finite temperature and show that there is a first order phase transition.

Holography and Entanglement in Flat Spacetime

We propose a holographic correspondence of the flat spacetime based on the behavior of the entanglement entropy and the correlation functions. The holographic dual theory turns out to be highly non-local. We argue that after most part of the space is traced out, the reduced density matrix gives the maximal entropy and the correlation functions become trivial. We present a toy model for this holographic dual using a non-local scalar field theory that reproduces the same property of the entanglement entropy. Our conjecture is consistent with the entropy of Schwarzschild black holes in asymptotically flat spacetimes.

Probing AdS Wormholes by Entanglement Entropy

In this paper, we study the Lorentzian AdS wormhole solutions constructed in arXiv:0808.2481 [hep-th]. Each of them is a classical solution interpolating between an AdS space and a flat space in type IIB supergravity. We calculate the holographic entanglement entropy to probe this geometry. Our analysis shows that there exits a mass gap in its holographic dual gauge theory and that the entanglement between the two boundaries is rather suppressed than that we naively expect for wormholes. We also examine the holographic conductivity on a probe D-brane in this spacetime.

Holographic Superconductor/Insulator Transition at Zero Temperature

We analyze the five-dimensional AdS gravity coupled to a gauge field and a charged scalar field. Under a Scherk-Schwarz compactification, we show that the system undergoes a superconductor/insulator transition at zero temperature in 2+1 dimensions as we change the chemical potential. By taking into account a confinement/deconfinement transition, the phase diagram turns out to have a rich structure. We will observe that it has a similarity with the RVB (resonating valence bond) approach to high-Tc superconductors via an emergent gauge symmetry.

Measuring Black Hole Formations by Entanglement Entropy via Coarse-Graining

We argue that the entanglement entropy offers us a useful coarse-grained entropy in time-dependent AdS/CFT. We show that the total von-Neumann entropy remains vanishing even when a black hole is created in a gravity dual, being consistent with the fact that its corresponding CFT is described by a time-dependent pure state. We analytically calculate the time evolution of entanglement entropy for a free Dirac fermion on a circle following a quantum quench. This is interpreted as a toy holographic dual of black hole creations and annihilations. It is manifestly free from the black hole information problem.

Probe Branes, Time-dependent Couplings and Thermalization in AdS/CFT

We present holographic descriptions of thermalization in conformal field theories using probe D-branes in AdS X S space-times. We find that the induced metrics on Dp-brane worldvolumes which are rotating in an internal sphere direction have horizons with characteristic Hawking temperatures even if there is no black hole in the bulk AdS. The AdS/CFT correspondence applied to such systems indeed reveals thermal properties such as Brownian motions and AC conductivities in the dual conformal field theories. We also use this framework to holographically analyze time-dependent systems undergoing a quantum quench, where parameters in quantum field theories, such as a mass or a coupling constant, are suddenly changed. We confirm that this leads to thermal behavior by demonstrating the formation of apparent horizons in the induced metric after a certain time.

Topological Insulators and Superconductors from D-branes

Realization of topological insulators (TIs) and superconductors (TSCs), such as the quantum spin Hall effect and the Z_2 topological insulator, in terms of D-branes in string theory is proposed. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between the K-theory classification of TIs/TSCs and D-brane charges. The string theory realization of TIs and TSCs comes naturally with gauge interactions, and the Wess-Zumino term of the D-branes gives rise to a gauge field theory of topological nature. This sheds light on TIs and TSCs beyond non-interacting systems, and the underlying topological field theory description thereof. In particular, our string theory realization includes the honeycomb lattice Kitaev model in two spatial dimensions, and its higher-dimensional extensions.

Topological Insulators and Superconductors from String Theory

Topological insulators and superconductors in different spatial dimensions and with different discrete symmetries have been fully classified recently, revealing a periodic structure for the pattern of possible types of topological insulators and supercondutors, both in terms of spatial dimensions and in terms of symmetry classes. It was proposed that K-theory is behind the periodicity. On the other hand, D-branes, a solitonic object in string theory, are also known to be classified by K-theory. In this paper, by inspecting low-energy effective field theories realized by two parallel D-branes, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between the K-theory classification of topological insulators/superconductors and D-brane charges. In addition, the string theory realization of topological insulators and superconductors comes naturally with gauge interactions, and the Wess-Zumino term of the D-branes gives rise to a gauge field theory of topological nature, such as ones with the Chern-Simons term or the $θ$-term in various dimensions. This sheds light on topological insulators and superconductors beyond non-interacting systems, and the underlying topological field theory description thereof. In particular, our string theory realization includes the honeycomb lattice Kitaev model in two spatial dimensions, and its higher-dimensional extensions. Increasing the number of D-branes naturally leads to a realization of topological insulators and superconductors in terms of holography (AdS/CFT).

Some No-go Theorems for String Duals of Non-relativistic Lifshitz-like Theories

We study possibilities of string theory embeddings of the gravity duals for non-relativistic Lifshitz-like theories with anisotropic scale invariance. We search classical solutions in type IIA and eleven-dimensional supergravities which are expected to be dual to (2+1)-dimensional Lifshitz-like theories. Under reasonable ansaetze, we prove that such gravity duals in the supergravities are not possible. We also discuss a possible physical reason behind this.

Fuzzy Ring from M2-brane Giant Torus

We construct spinning dual M2 giant gravitons in AdS_4 x S^7, which generically become 1/16 BPS states, and show that their world-volumes become torii. By taking an orbifold, we obtain spinning dielectric D2-brane configurations in AdS_4 x CP^3 dual to specific BPS operators in ABJM theory. This reveals a novel mechanism how to give an angular momentum to a dielectric D2-brane. We also find that when its angular momentum in the AdS_4 becomes large, it approaches to a ring-like object. Our result might suggest an existence of supersymmetric black rings in the AdS_4 background. We will also discuss dual giant gravitons in AdS_4 x CP^3.

On Type IIA Penrose Limit and N=6 Chern-Simons Theories

Recently, Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena proposed that the N=6 Chern-Simons gauge theories are holographically dual to the M-theory backgrounds with multiple M2-branes on orbifolds C^4/Z_k. When k is large, they have the type IIA string description. In this paper we analyze the Penrose limit of this IIA background and express the string spectrum as the conformal dimensions of operators in the gauge theories. For BPS operators, we can confirm the agreements between the IIA string on plane waves and the gauge theories. We point out that there exist BMN-like operators in the gauge theories, though their holographic interpretation does not seem to be simple. Also we analyze the weak coupling limit of this theory and show that the Hagedorn/deconfinement transition occurs as expected.

AdS Bubbles, Entropy and Closed String Tachyons

We study the conjectured connection between AdS bubbles (AdS solitons) and closed string tachyon condensations. We confirm that the entanglement entropy, which measures the degree of freedom, decreases under the tachyon condensation. The entropies in supergravity and free Yang-Mills agree with each other remarkably. Next we consider the tachyon condensation on the AdS twisted circle and argue that its endpoint is given by the twisted AdS bubble, defined by the double Wick rotation of rotating black 3-brane solutions. We calculated the Casimir energy and entropy and checked the agreements between the gauge and gravity results. Finally we show an infinite boost of a null linear dilaton theory with a tachyon wall (or bubble), leads to a solvable time-dependent background with a bulk tachyon condensation. This is the simplest example of spacetimes with null boundaries in string theory.

AdS/CFT and Strong Subadditivity of Entanglement Entropy

Recently, a holographic computation of the entanglement entropy in conformal field theories has been proposed via the AdS/CFT correspondence. One of the most important properties of the entanglement entropy is known as the strong subadditivity. This requires that the entanglement entropy should be a concave function with respect to geometric parameters. It is a non-trivial check on the proposal to see if this property is indeed satisfied by the entropy computed holographically. In this paper we examine several examples which are defined by annuli or cusps, and confirm the strong subadditivity via direct calculations. Furthermore, we conjecture that Wilson loop correlators in strongly coupled gauge theories satisfy the same relation. We also discuss the relation between the holographic entanglement entropy and the Bousso bound.

Aspects of Holographic Entanglement Entropy

This is an extended version of our short report hep-th/0603001, where a holographic interpretation of entanglement entropy in conformal field theories is proposed from AdS/CFT correspondence. In addition to a concise review of relevant recent progresses of entanglement entropy and details omitted in the earlier letter, this paper includes the following several new results : We give a more direct derivation of our claim which relates the entanglement entropy with the minimal area surfaces in the AdS_3/CFT_2 case as well as some further discussions on higher dimensional cases. Also the relation between the entanglement entropy and central charges in 4D conformal field theories is examined. We check that the logarithmic part of the 4D entanglement entropy computed in the CFT side agrees with the AdS_5 result at least under a specific condition. Finally we estimate the entanglement entropy of massive theories in generic dimensions by making use of our proposal.

Holographic Derivation of Entanglement Entropy from AdS/CFT

A holographic derivation of the entanglement entropy in quantum (conformal) field theories is proposed from AdS/CFT correspondence. We argue that the entanglement entropy in d+1 dimensional conformal field theories can be obtained from the area of d dimensional minimal surfaces in AdS_{d+2}, analogous to the Bekenstein-Hawking formula for black hole entropy. We show that our proposal perfectly reproduces the correct entanglement entropy in 2D CFT when applied to AdS_3. We also compare the entropy computed in AdS_5 \times S^5 with that of the free N=4 super Yang-Mills.

Notes on D-branes in 2D Type 0 String Theory

In this paper we construct complete macroscopic operators in two dimensional type 0 string theory. They represent D-branes localized in the time direction. We give another equivalent description of them as deformed Fermi surfaces. We also discuss a continuous array of such D-branes and show that it can be described by a matrix model with a deformed potential. For appropriate values of parameters, we find that it has an additional new sector hidden inside its strongly coupled region.

A Matrix Model Dual of Type 0B String Theory in Two Dimensions

We propose that type 0B string theory in two dimensions admits a dual description in terms of a one dimensional bosonic matrix model of a hermitian matrix. The potential in the matrix model is symmetric with respect to the parity-like Z_2 transformation of the matrix. The two sectors in the theory, namely the NSNS and RR scalar sectors correspond to two classes of operators in the matrix model, even and odd under the Z_2 symmetry respectively. We provide evidence that the matrix model successfully reconstructs the perturbative S-matrix of the string theory, and reproduces the closed string emission amplitude from unstable D-branes. Following recent work in two dimensional bosonic string, we argue that the matrix model can be identified with the theory describing N unstable D0-branes in type 0B theory. We also argue that type 0A theory is described in terms of the quantum mechanics of brane-antibrane systems.

Modular Invariance of Strings on PP-Waves with RR-flux

We study the modular invariance of strings on pp-waves with RR-flux. We explicitly show that the one-loop partition functions of the maximally supersymmetric pp-waves and their orbifolds can be modular invariant in spite of the mass terms in the light-cone gauge. From this viewpoint, we also determine the spectrum of type 0B theory on pp-wave and discuss its gauge theory dual. Furthermore, we investigate the spectrum of a non-supersymmetric orbifold and point out its supersymmetry enhancement in the Penrose limit.

Brane-Antibrane Action from Boundary String Field Theory

In this paper we give the boundary string field theory description of brane-antibrane systems. From the world-sheet action of brane-antibrane systems we obtain the tachyon potential and discuss the tachyon condensation exactly. We also find the world-volume action including the gauge fields. Moreover we determine RR-couplings exactly for non-BPS branes and brane-antibranes. These couplings are written by superconnections and correspond to K^1(M) and K^0(M) for the non-BPS branes and brane-antibranes, respectively. We also show that Myers terms appear if we include the transverse scalars in the boundary sigma model action.

Exact Tachyon Condensation on Noncommutative Torus

We construct the exact noncommutative solutions on tori. This gives an exact description of tachyon condensation on bosonic D-branes, non-BPS D-branes and brane-antibrane systems. We obtain various bound states of D-branes after the tachyon condensation. Our results show that these solutions can be generated by applying the gauge Morita equivalence between the constant curvature projective modules. We argue that there is a general framework of the noncommutative geometry based on the notion of Morita equivalence which underlies this specific example.

Orbifolds as Melvin Geometry

In this paper we explicitly show that the various noncompact abelian orbifolds are realized as special limits of parameters in type II (NSNS) Melvin background and its higher dimensional generalizations. As a result the supersymmetric ALE spaces (A-type C^2/Z_N) and nonsupersymmetric orbifolds in type II and type 0 theory are all connected with each other by the exactly marginal deformation. Our results provide new examples of the duality between type II and type 0 string theory. We also discuss the decay of unstable backgrounds in this model which include closed string tachyons.
