Stable isotopy in four dimensions

We construct infinite families of topologically isotopic but smoothly distinct knotted spheres in many simply connected 4-manifolds that become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing by connected summing with $S^2 \times S^2$, and as a consequence, analogous families of diffeomorphisms and metrics of positive scalar curvature for such 4-manifolds. We also construct families of smoothly distinct links, all of whose corresponding proper sublinks are smoothly isotopic, that become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing.

Cohomotopy sets of 4-manifolds

Elementary geometric arguments are used to compute the group of homotopy classes of maps from a 4-manifold X to the 3-sphere, and to enumerate the homotopy classes of maps from X to the 2-sphere. The former completes a project initiated by Steenrod in the 1940's, and the latter provides geometric arguments for and extensions of recent homotopy theoretic results of Larry Taylor. These two results complete the computation of all the cohomotopy sets of closed oriented 4-manifolds and provide a framework for the study of Morse 2-functions on 4-manifolds, a subject that has garnered considerable recent attention.

Pontryagin invariants and integral formulas for Milnor's triple linking number

To each three-component link in the 3-sphere, we associate a geometrically natural characteristic map from the 3-torus to the 2-sphere, and show that the pairwise linking numbers and Milnor triple linking number that classify the link up to link homotopy correspond to the Pontryagin invariants that classify its characteristic map up to homotopy. This can be viewed as a natural extension of the familiar fact that the linking number of a two-component link in 3-space is the degree of its associated Gauss map from the 2-torus to the 2-sphere. When the pairwise linking numbers are all zero, we give an integral formula for the triple linking number analogous to the Gauss integral for the pairwise linking numbers. The integrand in this formula is geometrically natural in the sense that it is invariant under orientation-preserving rigid motions of the 3-sphere, while the integral itself can be viewed as the helicity of a related vector field on the 3-torus.

The Milnor degree of a three-manifold

The Milnor degree of a 3-manifold is an invariant that records the maximum simplicity, in terms of higher order linking, of any link in the 3-sphere that can be surgered to give the manifold. This invariant is investigated in the context of torsion linking forms, nilpotent quotients of the fundamental group, Massey products and quantum invariants, and the existence of 3-manifolds with any prescribed Milnor degree and first Betti number is established. Along the way, it is shown that the number M(k,r) of linearly independent Milnor invariants of degree k, distinguishing r-component links in the 3-sphere whose lower degree invariants vanish, is positive except in the classically known cases (when r = 1, and when r = 2 with k = 2, 4 or 6).

The nonuniqueness of Chekanov polynomials of Legendrian knots

Examples are given of prime Legendrian knots in the standard contact 3-space that have arbitrarily many distinct Chekanov polynomials, refuting a conjecture of Lenny Ng. These are constructed using a new `Legendrian tangle replacement' technique. This technique is then used to show that the phenomenon of multiple Chekanov polynomials is in fact quite common. Finally, building on unpublished work of Yufa and Branson, a tabulation is given of Legendrian fronts, along with their Chekanov polynomials, representing maximal Thurston-Bennequin Legendrian knots for each knot type of nine or fewer crossings. These knots are paired so that the front for the mirror of any knot is obtained in a standard way by rotating the front for the knot.

Quantum cyclotomic orders of 3-manifolds

This paper provides a topological interpretation for number theoretic properties of quantum invariants of 3-manifolds. In particular, it is shown that the p-adic valuation of the quantum SO(3)-invariant of a 3-manifold M, for odd primes p, is bounded below by a linear function of the mod p first betti number of M. Sharper bounds using more delicate topological invariants related to Massey products are given as well.

The E_8-manifold, singular fibers and handlebody decompositions

The E_8-manifold has several natural framed link descriptions, and we give an efficient method (via `grapes') for showing that they are indeed the same 4-manifold. This leads to explicit handle pictures for the perturbation of singular fibers in an elliptic surface to a collection of fishtails. In the same vein, we show how the degeneration of a regular fiber to a singular fiber in an elliptic surface provides rich examples of Gromov's compactness theorem.
