Aether, Dark Energy, and String Compactifications

The 19th century Aether died with Special Relativity but was resurrected by General Relativity in the form of dark energy; a tensile material with tension equal to its energy density. Such a material is provided by the D-branes of string-theory; these can support the fields of supersymmetric particle-physics, although their energy density is cancelled by orientifold singularities upon compactification. Dark energy can still arise from supersymmetry-breaking anti-D-branes but it is probably time-dependent. Recent results on time-dependent compactifications to an FLRW universe with late-time accelerated expansion are reviewed.

On chiral bosons in 2D and 6D

In the Hamiltonian formulation of chiral 2k-form electrodynamics, the 2k-form potential on the (4k+1)-space is defined up to the addition of either (i) a closed $2k$-form or (ii) an exact 2k-form, depending on the choice of chirality constraint. Case (i) is realized by the Floreanini-Jackiw 2D chiral boson (for k=0) and its Henneaux-Teitelboim generalisation to k>0. For all k, but focusing on the 6D case, we present a simple Lorentz-invariant Hamiltonian model that realizes case (ii), and we derive it from Siegel's manifestly Lorentz invariant Lagrangian formulation.

A non-linear duality-invariant conformal extension of Maxwell's equations

All nonlinear extensions of the source-free Maxwell equations preserving both SO(2) electromagnetic duality invariance and conformal invariance are found, and shown to be limits of a one-parameter generalisation of Born-Infeld electrodynamics. The strong-field limit is the same as that found by Bialynicki-Birula from Born-Infeld theory but the weak-field limit is a new one-parameter extension of Maxwell electrodynamics, which is interacting but admits exact light-velocity plane-wave solutions of arbitrary polarisation. Small-amplitude waves on a constant uniform electromagnetic background exhibit birefringence, but one polarisation mode remains lightlike.

Manifestly Lorentz invariant chiral boson action

A manifestly Lorentz invariant action is found for the Floreanini-Jackiw chiral boson. The method involves a novel chiral reduction of the phase-space action for a string, and can be adapted to describe chiral bosons on the heterotic string worldsheet. A similar manifestly Lorentz invariant action is found for an entire class of conformal chiral 2k-form electrodynamics in (4k+2) dimensions which includes the Floreanini-Jackiw theory as the k=0$ case.

DBI in the IR

The IR limit of a planar static D3-brane in AdS5 x S5 is a tensionless D3-brane at the AdS horizon, with dynamics governed by a strong-field limit of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action analogous to that found from the Born-Infeld action by Bialynicki-Birula. As in that case, the field equations are those of an interacting 4D conformal invariant field theory with an Sl(2;R) electromagnetic duality invariance, but the D3-brane origin makes these properties manifest. We also find an Sl(2;R)-invariant action for these equations.

On asymptotic charges in 3D gravity

A variant of the ADT method for the determination of gravitational charges as integrals at infinity is applied to "Chern-Simons-like" theories of 3D gravity, and the result is used to find the mass and angular momentum of the BTZ black hole considered as a solution of a variety of massive 3D gravity field equations. The results agree with many obtained previously by other methods, including our own results for "Minimal Massive Gravity", but they disagree with others, including recently reported results for "Exotic Massive Gravity". We also find the central charges of the asymptotic conformal symmetry algebra for the generic 3D gravity model with AdS vacuum and discuss implications for black hole thermodynamics.

Noether theorems and higher derivatives

A simple proof of Noether's first theorem involves the promotion of a constant symmetry parameter $ε$ to an arbitrary function of time, the Noether charge $Q$ is then the coefficient of $\dotε$ in the variation of the action. Here we examine the validity of this proof for Lagrangian mechanics with arbitrarily-high time derivatives, in which context "higher-level" analogs of Noether's theorem can be similarly proved, and "Noetherian charges" read off from, e.g. the coefficient of $\ddot ε$ in the variation of the action. While $Q=0$ implies a restricted gauge invariance, unrestricted gauge invariance requires zero Noetherian charges too. Some illustrative examples are considered and the extension to field theory discussed.

The Jordan formulation of Quantum Mechanics: a review

This is a transcription of a conference proceedings from 1985. It reviews the Jordan algebra formulation of quantum mechanics. A possible novelty is the discussion of time evolution; the associator takes over the role of $i$ times the commutator in the standard density matrix formulation, and for the Jordan algebra of complex Hermitian matrices this implies a Hamiltonian of the form $H= i[x,y] + λ\mathbb{I}$ for traceless Hermitian $x,y$ and real number $λ$. Other possibilities for time evolution in the Jordan formulation are briefly considered.

Worldline CPT and massless supermultiplets

The action for a massless particle in 4D Minkowski space has a worldline time-reversing symmetry corresponding to CPT invariance of the quantum theory. The analogous symmetry of the N-extended superparticle is shown to be anomalous when N is odd, in the supertwistor formalism this is because a CPT-violating worldline-Chern-Simons term is needed to preserve the chiral U(1) gauge invariance. This accords with the fact that no massless N=1 super-Poincaré irrep is CPT-self-conjugate. There is a CPT self-conjugate supermultiplet when N is even, but it has $2^{N+1}$ states when N/2 is odd (e.g. the N=2 hypermultiplet) in contrast to just $2^N$ when N/2 is even (e.g. the N=4 Maxwell supermultiplet). This is shown to follow from a Kramers degeneracy of the superparticle state space when N/2 is odd.

Minimal Massive 3D Gravity Unitarity Redux

A geometrical analysis of the bulk and anti-de Sitter boundary unitarity conditions of 3D "Minimal Massive Gravity" (MMG) (which evades the "bulk/boundary clash" of Topologically Massive Gravity) is used to extend and simplify previous results, showing that unitarity selects, up to equivalence, a connected region in parameter space. We also initiate the study of flat-space holography for MMG. Its relevant flat space limit is a deformation of 3D conformal gravity; the deformation is both non-linear and non-conformal, implying a linearisation instability.

The Third Way to 3D Gravity

Consistency of Einstein's gravitational field equation $G_{μν} \propto T_{μν}$ imposes a "conservation condition" on the $T$-tensor that is satisfied by (i) matter stress tensors, as a consequence of the matter equations of motion, and (ii) identically by certain other tensors, such as the metric tensor. However, there is a third way, overlooked until now because it implies a "non-geometrical" action: one {\it not} constructed from the metric and its derivatives alone. The new possibility is exemplified by the 3D "minimal massive gravity" model, which resolves the "bulk vs. boundary" unitarity problem of topologically massive gravity with anti-de Sitter asymptotics. Although all known examples of the third way are in three spacetime dimensions, the idea is general and could, in principle, apply to higher-dimensional theories.

Twistors and the massive spinning particle

Gauge-invariant twistor variables are found for the massive spinning particle with N-extended local worldline supersymmetry, in spacetime dimensions D=3,4,6. The twistor action is manifestly Lorentz invariant but the anticommuting spin variables appear exactly as in the non-relativistic limit. This allows a simple confirmation that the quantum N=2 spinning particle has either spin one or spin zero, and that N>2 is quantum inconsistent for D=4,6.

Yang-Mills as massive Chern-Simons theory: a third way to three-dimensional gauge theories

The Yang-Mills (YM) equation in three spacetime dimensions (3D) can be modified to include a novel parity-preserving interaction term, with inverse mass parameter, in addition to a possible topological mass term. The novelty is that the modified YM equation is not the Euler-Lagrange equation of any gauge-invariant local action for the YM gauge potential alone. Instead, consistency is achieved in the "third way" exploited by 3D "minimal massive gravity". We relate our results to the "novel Higgs mechanism" for Chern-Simons gauge theories.

preprint2014arXiv

All Superparticles are BPS

The generic action for an N-extended superparticle in D-dimensional Minkowski spacetime is shown to have "hidden" supersymmetries (related by "dualities" to the manifest supersymmetries) such that the full supersymmetry algebra is BPS-saturated; the exceptions (which include, trivially, the massless case) are those for which the manifest supersymmetry algebra is already BPS-saturated. Moreover, it is shown that any "non-BPS" superparticle action is a gauge-fixed version of the "BPS" superparticle action for which all supersymmetries are manifest. An example is the N=1 massive D=10 superparticle, which actually has N=2 supersymmetry and is equivalent to the action for a D0-brane of IIA superstring theory.

Matter coupling in 3D "Minimal Massive Gravity"

The "Minimal Massive Gravity" (MMG) model of massive gravity in three spacetime dimensions (which has the same anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk properties as "Topologically Massive Gravity" but improved boundary properties) is coupled to matter. Consistency requires a particular matter source tensor, which is quadratic in the stress tensor. The consequences are explored for an ideal fluid in the context of asymptotically de-Sitter (dS) cosmological solutions, which bounce smoothly from contraction to expansion. Various vacuum solutions are also found, including warped-(A)dS, and (for special values of parameters) static black holes and an (A)dS2 x S1 vacuum.

preprint2014arXiv

Minimal Massive 3D Gravity

We present an alternative to Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) with the same "minimal" bulk properties; i.e. a single local degree of freedom that is realized as a massive graviton in linearization about an anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum. However, in contrast to TMG, the new "minimal massive gravity" has both a positive energy graviton and positive central charges for the asymptotic AdS-boundary conformal algebra.

preprint2014arXiv

Supertwistors and massive particles

In the (super)twistor formulation of massless (super)particle mechanics, the mass-shell constraint is replaced by a "spin-shell" constraint from which the spin content can be read off. We extend this formalism to massive (super)particles (with N-extended spacetime supersymmetry) in three and four space-time dimensions, explaining how the spin-shell constraints are related to spin, and we use it to prove equivalence of the massive N=1 and BPS-saturated N=2 superparticle actions. We also find the supertwistor form of the action for "spinning particles" with N-extended worldline supersymmetry, massless in four dimensions and massive in three dimensions, and we show how this simplifies special features of the N=2 case.

Thermodynamics of "exotic" BTZ black holes

A number of three-dimensional (3D) gravity models, such as 3D conformal gravity, admit "exotic" black hole solutions: the metric is the same as the BTZ metric of 3D Einstein gravity but with reversed roles for mass and angular momentum, and an entropy proportional to the length of the inner horizon instead of the event horizon. Here we show that the BTZ solutions of the "exotic" 3D Einstein gravity (with parity-odd action but Einstein field equations) are exotic black holes, and we investigate their thermodynamics. The first and second laws of black hole thermodynamics still apply, and the entropy still has a statistical interpretation.

preprint2013arXiv

Zwei-Dreibein Gravity

We present a generally-covariant and parity-invariant "zwei-dreibein" action for gravity in three space-time dimensions that propagates two massive spin-2 modes, unitarily, and we use Hamiltonian methods to confirm the absence of unphysical degrees of freedom. We show how zwei-dreibein gravity unifies previous "3D massive gravity" models, and extends them, in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, to allow for a positive central charge consistent with bulk unitarity.

preprint2012arXiv

On "New Massive" 4D Gravity

We construct a four-dimensional (4D) gauge theory that propagates, unitarily, the five polarization modes of a massive spin-2 particle. These modes are described by a "dual" graviton gauge potential and the Lagrangian is 4th-order in derivatives. As the construction mimics that of 3D "new massive gravity", we call this 4D model (linearized) "new massive dual gravity". We analyse its massless limit, and discuss similarities to the Eddington-Schroedinger model.

preprint2012arXiv

On the Hamiltonian form of 3D massive gravity

We present a "Chern-Simons-like" action for the "general massive gravity" model propagating two spin-2 modes with independent masses in three spacetime dimensions (3D), and we use it to find a simple Hamiltonian form of this model. The number of local degrees of freedom, determined by the dimension of the physical phase space, agrees with a linearized analysis except in some limits, in particular that yielding "new topologically massive gravity", which therefore suffers from a linearization instability.

preprint2011arXiv

A spin-4 analog of 3D massive gravity

A 6th-order, but ghost-free, gauge-invariant action is found for a 4th-rank symmetric tensor potential in a three-dimensional (3D) Minkowski spacetime. It propagates two massive modes of spin 4 that are interchanged by parity, and is thus a spin-4 analog of linearized "new massive gravity". Also found are ghost-free spin-4 analogs of linearized "topologically massive gravity" and "new topologically massive gravity", of 5th- and 8th-order respectively.

preprint2011arXiv

Modes of Log Gravity

The physical modes of a recently proposed D-dimensional "critical gravity", linearized about its anti-de Sitter vacuum, are investigated. All "log mode" solutions, which we categorize as `spin 2' or `Proca', arise as limits of the massive spin 2 modes of the non-critical theory. The linearized Einstein tensor of a spin 2 log mode is itself a 'non-gauge' solution of the linearized Einstein equations whereas the linearized Einstein tensor of a Proca mode takes the form of a linearized general coordinate transformation. Our results suggest the existence of a holographically dual logarithmic conformal field theory.

Quantum 3D Superstrings

The classical Green-Schwarz superstring action, with N=1 or N=2 spacetime supersymmetry, exists for spacetime dimensions D=3,4,6,10, but quantization in the light-cone gauge breaks Lorentz invariance unless either D=10, which leads to critical superstring theory, or D=3. We give details of results presented previously for the bosonic and N=1 closed 3D (super)strings and extend them to the N=2 3D superstring. In all cases, the spectrum is parity-invariant and contains anyons of irrational spin.

The Quantum 3D Superparticle

The minimal (${\cal N}=1$) superparticle in three spacetime dimensions (3D) is quantized. For non-zero mass it describes a spin-1/4 semion supermultiplet of "relativistic helicities" (-1/4, 1/4). The addition of a parity-violating Lorentz-Wess-Zumino term shifts this to $(β-1/4,β+1/4)$ for arbitrary $β$. For zero mass, in which case spin is not defined, the quantum superparticle describes a supermultiplet of one boson and one fermion.

More on Massive 3D Supergravity

Completing earlier work on three dimensional (3D) N=1 supergravity with curvature-squared terms, we construct the general supergravity extension of cosmological massive gravity theories. We expand about supersymmetric anti-de Sitter vacua, finding the conditions for bulk unitarity and the critical points in parameter space at which the spectrum changes. We discuss implications for the dual conformal field theory.

preprint2010arXiv

On Critical Massive (Super)Gravity in adS3

We review the status of three-dimensional "general massive gravity" (GMG) in its linearization about an anti-de Sitter (adS) vacuum, focusing on critical points in parameter space that yield generalizations of "chiral gravity". We then show how these results extend to N=1 super-GMG, expanded about a supersymmetric adS vacuum, and also to the most general `curvature-squared' N=1 supergravity model.

On Higher Derivatives in 3D Gravity and Higher Spin Gauge Theories

The general second-order massive field equations for arbitrary positive integer spin in three spacetime dimensions, and their "self-dual" limit to first-order equations, are shown to be equivalent to gauge-invariant higher-derivative field equations. We recover most known equivalences for spins 1 and 2, and find some new ones. In particular, we find a non-unitary massive 3D gravity theory with a 5th order term obtained by contraction of the Ricci and Cotton tensors; this term is part of an N=2 super-invariant that includes the "extended Chern-Simons" term of 3D electrodynamics. We also find a new unitary 6th order gauge theory for "self-dual" spin 3.

On the thermodynamics of moving bodies

We model the situation in which a photon detector moves with constant velocity in a Minkowski heat-bath by considering an Unruh-DeWitt detector, with variable energy gap $\hbar ω$, moving on a brane, at a non-zero (Unruh) temperature $T$ due to acceleration in an orthogonal direction. We compute the angular response for a 2-brane. At low velocity we find agreement with the standard Doppler shift formula in the limit $\hbarω\gg T$ in which the photon gas is classical; otherwise there is a discrepancy, which we attribute to angular-dependence of the induced emission rate. At relativistic velocities our result disagrees with the standard formula even when $\hbarω\gg T$, and above a critical velocity there is no response from the detector within a `backward' cone. We discuss potential implications for observations of the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Massive 3D Supergravity

We construct the N=1 three-dimensional supergravity theory with cosmological, Einstein-Hilbert, Lorentz Chern-Simons, and general curvature squared terms. We determine the general supersymmetric configuration, and find a family of supersymmetric adS vacua with the supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum as a limiting case. Linearizing about the Minkowski vacuum, we find three classes of unitary theories; one is the supersymmetric extension of the recently discovered `massive 3D gravity'. Another is a `new topologically massive supergravity' (with no Einstein-Hilbert term) that propagates a single (2,3/2) helicity supermultiplet.

Relativistic Kinematics and Stationary Motions

The relativistic jerk, snap and all higher-order kinematical D-vectors are defined for the motion of a massive particle in a D-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. We illustrate the formalism with stationary motions, for which we provide a new, Lorentz covariant, classification. We generalize some cases to branes, explaining the relevance to uniform motion in a heat bath. We also consider some non-stationary motions, including motion with constant proper jerk, and free fall into a black hole as viewed from a GEMS perspective.

Unitary Spherical Super-Landau Models

A Hilbert space metric is found for the SU(2|1)-invariant `superflag' Landau models, parametrized by integer 2N' and real number M, such that the Hilbert space norm is positive definite. The spectrum of these unitary super-Landau models is determined. The M=0 case yields a unitary Landau model on the supersphere SU(2|1)/U(1|1) with U(1) charge 2N=2N'+1. For the generic unitary superflag model, the manifest SU(2|1) symmetry is dynamically enhanced to SU(2|2); this is the `spherical' analog of the hidden worldline supersymmetry found previously in the planar limit.

Domain-wall/Cosmology correspondence in adS/dS supergravity

We realize the domain-wall/cosmology correspondence for (pseudo)supersymmetric domain walls (cosmologies) in the context of four-dimensional supergravity. The OSp(2|4)-invariant anti-de Sitter (adS) vacuum of a particular N=2 Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theory is shown to correspond to the OSp(2^*|2,2)-invariant de Sitter (dS) vacuum of a particular pseudo-supergravity model, with `twisted' reality conditions on spinors. More generally, supersymmetric domain walls of the former model correspond to pseudo-supersymmetric cosmologies of the latter model, with time-dependent pseudo-Killing spinors that we give explicitly.

Planar Super-Landau Models Revisited

We use the methods of PT-symmetric quantum theory to find a one-parameter family of ISU(1|1)-invariant planar super-Landau models with positive norm, uncovering an `accidental', and generically spontaneously-broken, worldline supersymmetry, with charges that have a Sugawara-type representation in terms of the ISU(1|1) charges. In contrast to standard models of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, it is the norms of states rather than their energies that are parameter-dependent, and the spectrum changes discontinuously in the limit that worldline supersymmetry is restored.

The D2 Susy Zoo

We present new supersymmetric solutions of the Dirac-Born-Infeld equations for time-independent D2-branes, including a 1/2 supersymmetric `dyonic' D2-brane and various 1/4 supersymmetric configurations that include `twisted' supertubes, superfunnels with arbitrary planar cross-section, asymptotically planar D2-branes, and non-singular intersections of `magnetic' D2-branes. Our analysis is exhaustive for D2-branes in three space dimensions.

Dilaton Domain Walls and Dynamical Systems

Domain wall solutions of $d$-dimensional gravity coupled to a dilaton field $σ$ with an exponential potential $Λe^{-λσ}$ are shown to be governed by an autonomous dynamical system, with a transcritical bifurcation as a function of the parameter $λ$ when $Λ<0$. All phase-plane trajectories are found exactly for $λ=0$, including separatrices corresponding to walls that interpolate between $adS_d$ and $adS_{d-1} \times\bR$, and the exact solution is found for $d=3$. Janus-type solutions are interpreted as marginal bound states of these ``separatrix walls''. All flat domain wall solutions, which are given exactly for any $λ$, are shown to be supersymmetric for some superpotential $W$, determined by the solution.

A Super-Flag Landau Model

We consider the quantum mechanics of a particle on the coset superspace $SU(2|1)/[U(1)\times U(1)]$, which is a super-flag manifold with $SU(2)/U(1)\cong S^2$ `body'. By incorporating the Wess-Zumino terms associated with the $U(1)\times U(1)$ stability group, we obtain an exactly solvable super-generalization of the Landau model for a charged particle on the sphere. We solve this model using the factorization method. Remarkably, the physical Hilbert space is finite-dimensional because the number of admissible Landau levels is bounded by a combination of the U(1) charges. The level saturating the bound has a wavefunction in a shortened, degenerate, irrep of $SU(2|1)$.

preprint2003arXiv

Odd coset quantum mechanics

The standard quantum states of $n$ complex Grassmann variables with a free-particle Lagrangian transform as a spinor of SO(2n). However, the same `free-fermion' model has a non-linearly realized $SU(n|1)$ symmetry; it can be viewed as the mechanics of a `particle' on the Grassmann-odd coset space $SU(n|1)/U(n)$. We implement a quantization of this model for which the states with non-zero norm transform as a representation of $SU(n|1)$, the representation depending on the U(1) charge of the wave-function. For $n=2$ the wave-function can be interpreted as a BRST superfield.

Supercurves

The TST-dual of the general 1/4-supersymmetric D2-brane supertube is identified as a 1/4-supersymmetric IIA `supercurve': a string with arbitrary transverse displacement travelling at the speed of light. A simple proof is given of the classical upper bound on the angular momentum, which is also recovered as the semi-classical limit of a quantum bound. The classical bound is saturated by a `superhelix', while the quantum bound is saturated by a bosonic oscillator state in a unique SO(8) representation.

D-brane Solitons in Supersymmetric Sigma-Models

Massive D=4 N=2 supersymmetric sigma models typically admit domain wall (Q-kink) solutions and string (Q-lump) solutions, both preserving 1/2 supersymmetry. We exhibit a new static 1/4 supersymmetric `kink-lump' solution in which a string ends on a wall, and show that it has an effective realization as a BIon of the D=4 super DBI-action. It is also shown to have a time-dependent Q-kink-lump generalization which reduces to the Q-lump in a limit corresponding to infinite BI magnetic field. All these 1/4 supersymmetric sigma-model solitons are shown to be realized in M-theory as calibrated, or `Q-calibrated', M5-branes in an M-monopole background.

Supersymmetry of Rotating Branes

We present a new 1/8 supersymmetric intersecting M-brane solution of D=11 supergravity with two independent rotation parameters. The metric has a non-singular event horizon and the near-horizon geometry is $adS_3\times S^3\times S^3\times\bE^2$ (just as in the non-rotating case). We also present a method of determining the isometry supergroup of supergravity solutions from the Killing spinors and use it to show that for the near horizon solution it is $D(2|1,α)\times D(2|1,α)$ where $α$ is the ratio of the two 3-sphere radii. We also consider various dimensional reductions of our solution, and the corresponding effect of these reductions on the Killing spinors and the isometry supergroups.

BPS Bounds for Worldvolume Branes

The worldvolume field equations of M-branes and D-branes are known to admit p-brane soliton solutions. These solitons are shown to saturate a BPS-type bound on their p-volume tensions, which are expressed in terms of central charges that are expected to appear in the worldvolume supertranslation algebra. The cases we consider include vortices, `BIons', instantons and dyons (both abelian and non-abelian), and the string boundaries of M-2-branes in the M-5-brane.
