Twisted conjugacy in $SL_n$ and $GL_n$ over subrings of $\bar{\mathbb F}_p(t)$

Let $ϕ:G\to G$ be an automorphism of an infinite group $G$. One has an equivalence relation $\sim_ϕ$ on $G$ defined as $x\sim_ϕy$ if there exists a $z\in G$ such that $y=zxϕ(z^{-1})$. The equivalence classes are called $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy classes and the set $G/\!\!\sim_ϕ$ of equivalence classes is denoted $\mathcal R(ϕ)$. The cardinality $R(ϕ)$ of $\mathcal R(ϕ)$ is called the Reidemeister number of $ϕ$. We write $R(ϕ)=\infty$ when $\mathcal R(ϕ)$ is infinite. We say that $G$ has the $R_\infty$-{\it property} if $R(ϕ)=\infty$ for every automorphism $ϕ$ of $G$. We show that the groups $G=GL_n(R), SL_n(R)$ have the $R_\infty$-property for all $n\ge 3$ when $ F[t]\subset R\subsetneq F(t)$ where $F$ is a subfield of $\bar{\mathbb F}_p$. When $n\ge 4$, we show that any subgroup $H\subset GL_n(R)$ that contains $SL_n(R)$ also has the $R_\infty$-property.

A note on the equivariant cobordism of generalized Dold manifolds

Let $(X,J) $ be an almost complex manifold with a (smooth) involution $σ:X\to X$ such that $Fix(σ)\neq \emptyset$. Assume that $σ$ is a complex conjugation, i.e, the differential of $σ$ anti-commutes with $J$. The space $P(m,X):=\mathbb{S}^m\times X/\!\sim$ where $(v,x)\sim (-v,σ(x))$ is known as a generalized Dold manifold. Suppose that a group $G\cong \mathbb Z_2^s$ acts smoothly on $X$ such that $g\circ σ=σ\circ g$ for all $g\in G$. Using the action of the diagonal subgroup $D=O(1)^{m+1}\subset O(m+1)$ on the sphere $\mathbb S^{m}$ for which there are only finitely many pairs of antipodal points that are stablized by $D$, we obtain an action of $\mathcal G=D\times G$ on $\mathbb S^m\times X$, which descends to a (smooth) action of $\mathcal G$ on $P(m,X)$. When the stationary point set $X^G$ for the $G$ action on $X$ is finite, the same also holds for the $\mathcal G$ action on $P(m,X)$. The main result of this note is that the equivariant cobordism class $[P(m,X),\mathcal G]$ vanishes if and only if $[X,G]$ vanishes. We illustrate this result in the case when $X$ is the complex flag manifold, $σ$ is the natural complex conjugation and $G\cong (\mathbb Z_2)^n$ is contained in the diagonal subgroup of $U(n)$.

Twisted conjugacy in free products

Let $ϕ:G\to G$ be an automorphism of a group which is a free-product of finitely many groups each of which is freely indecomposable and two of the factors contain proper finite index characteristic subgroups. We show that $G$ has infinitely many $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy classes. As an application, we show that if $G$ is the fundamental group of a three-manifold that is not irreducible, then $G$ has property $R_\infty$, that is, there are infinitely many $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy classes in $G$ for every automorphism $ϕ$ of $G$.

Degrees of maps between locally symmetric spaces

Let $X$ be a locally symmetric space $Γ\backslash G/K$ where $G$ is a connected non-compact semisimple real Lie group with trivial centre, $K$ is a maximal compact subgroup of $G$, and $Γ\subset G$ is a torsion-free irreducible lattice in $G$. Let $Y=Λ\backslash H/L$ be another such space having the same dimension as $X$. Suppose that real rank of $G$ is at least $2$. We show that any $f:X\to Y$ is either null-homotopic or is homotopic to a covering projection of degree an integer that depends only on $Γ$ and $Λ$. As a corollary we obtain that the set $[X,Y]$ of homotopy classes of maps from $X$ to $Y$ is finite. We obtain results on the (non-) existence of orientation reversing diffeomorphisms on $X$ as well as the fixed point property for $X$.

Groups of PL-homeomorphisms admitting non-trivial invariant characters

We show that several classes of groups G of PL-homeomorphisms of the real line admit non-trivial homomorphisms from G to the additive group of reals that are fixed by every automorphism of G. The classes of groups enjoying the stated property include the generalisations of Thompson's group F studied by K. S. Brown, M. Stein, S. Cleary, and Bieri-Strebel but also the class of groups investigated by Bieri-Neumann-Strebel in [BNS87, Theorem 8.1]. It follows that every automorphism of a group in one of these classes has infinitely many associated twisted conjugacy classes.

Sigma theory and twisted conjugacy-II: Houghton groups and pure symmetric automorphism groups

We say that $x,y\in Γ$ are in the same $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy class and write $x\sim_ϕy$ if there exists an element $γ\in Γ$ such that $y=γxϕ(γ^{-1})$. This is an equivalence relation on $Γ$ called the $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy. Let $R(ϕ)$ denote the number of $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy classes in $Γ$. If $R(ϕ)$ is infinite for all $ϕ\in Aut(Γ)$, we say that $Γ$ has the $R_\infty$-property. The purpose of this note is to show that the symmetric group $S_\infty$, the Houghton groups and the pure symmetric automorphism groups have the $R_\infty$-property. We show, also, that the Richard Thompson group $T$ has the $R_\infty$-property. We obtain a general result establishing the $R_\infty$-property of finite direct product of finitely generated groups.

Twisted conjugacy in generalized Thompson groups of type F

If $ϕ$ is an automorphism of a group $G$ and $x,y\in G$, we say that $x$ and $y$ are $ϕ$-twisted conjugates if there exists an $z\in G$ such that $y=z.x.ϕ(z^{-1})$. This is an equivalence relation. If there are infinitely many $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy classes for every automorphism $ϕ$ of $G$ we say that $G$ has the $R_\infty$-property. We prove that the generalized Richard Thompson groups $F_n$ and $F(l,A,P)$ have the $R_\infty$-property.

Borel-de Siebenthal discrete series and associated holomorphic discrete series

Let G_0 be a simply connected noncompact real simple Lie group with maximal compact subgroup K_0. Assume that rank(G_0) = rank(K_0) so that G_0 has discrete series representations. If G_0/K_0 is Hermitian symmetric, there exists a relatively simple discrete series of G_0, called holomorphic discrete series. Now assume that G_0/K_0 is not Hermitian symmetric. In this case, we can define Borel-de Siebenthal discrete series of G_0 analogous to holomorphic discrete series. We consider a certain circle subgroup of K_0 whose centralizer L_0 is such that K_0/L_0 is an irreducible compact Hermitian symmetric space. Let (K_0)* be the dual of K_0 with respect to L_0. Then (K_0)*/L_0 is an irreducible non-compact Hermitian symmetric space dual to K_0/L_0. To each Borel-de Siebenthal discrete series of G_0, we can associate a holomorphic discrete series of (K_0)*. In this article, we address occurrence of common L_0-types between these two discrete series under certain conditions.

Maps between certain complex Grassmann manifolds

Let $k,l,m,n$ be positive integers such that $m-l\ge l>k, m-l>n-k\ge k$ and $m-l>2k^2-k-1$. Let $G_{k}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ denote the Grassmann manifold of $k$-dimensional vector subspaces of $\bc^n$. We show that any continuous map $f:G_{l}(\bc^m)\to G_{k}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is rationally null-homotopic. As an application, we show the existence of a point $A\in G_{l}(\bc^m)$ such that the vector space $f(A)$ is contained in $A$; here $\mathbb{C}^n$ is regarded as a vector subspace of $\mathbb{C}^m\cong \bc^n\oplus\bc^{m-n}.$

Twisted conjugacy in Richard Thompson's group T

Let $f$ be an automorphism of a group $G$. Two elements $x, y$ in $G$ are said to be in the same $f$-twisted conjugacy class if there exists an element $z$ in $G$ such that $y=z x f(z^{-1})$. This is an equivalence relation known as $f$-twisted conjugacy. If the number $R(f)$ of $f$-twisted conjugacy classes is infinite for every automorphism $f$ of $G$ one says that $G$ has the $R_\infty$-property. We show that the Richard Thompson group $T$ has the $R_\infty$-property.

Vector Fields on certain quotients of complex Stiefel manifolds

We consider quotients of complex Stiefel manifolds by finite cyclic groups whose action is induced by the scalar multiplication on the corresponding complex vector space. We obtain a description of their tangent bundles, compute their mod p cohomology and obtain estimates for their span (with respect to their standard differentiable structure). We compute the Pontrjagin and Stiefel-Whitney classes of these manifolds and give applications to their stable parallelizability.

Complex structures on product of circle bundles over complex manifolds

Let $\bar{L}_i\lr X_i$ be a holomorphic line bundle over a compact complex manifold for $i=1,2$. Let $S_i$ denote the associated principal circle-bundle with respect to some hermitian inner product on $\bar{L}_i$. We construct complex structures on $S=S_1\times S_2$ which we refer to as {\em scalar, diagonal, and linear types}. While scalar type structures always exist, the more general diagonal but non-scalar type structures are constructed assuming that $\bar{L}_i$ are equivariant $(\bc^*)^{n_i}$-bundles satisfying some additional conditions. The linear type complex structures are constructed assuming $X_i$ are (generalized) flag varieties and $\bar{L}_i$ negative ample line bundles over $X_i$. When $H^1(X_1;\br)=0$ and $c_1(\bar{L}_1)\in H^2(X_1;\br)$ is non-zero, the compact manifold $S$ does not admit any symplectic structure and hence it is non-Kähler with respect to {\em any} complex structure. We obtain a vanishing theorem for $H^q(S;\mathcal{O}_S)$ when $X_i$ are projective manifolds, $\bar{L}_i^\vee$ are very ample and the cone over $X_i$ with respect to the projective imbedding defined by $\bar{L}_i^\vee$ are Cohen-Macaulay. We obtain applications to the Picard group of $S$. When $X_i=G_i/P_i$ where $P_i$ are maximal parabolic subgroups and $S$ is endowed with linear type complex structure with `vanishing unipotent part' we show that the field of meromorphic functions on $S$ is purely transcendental over $\bc$.
