The BNS invariants of the generalized solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups and of their finite index subgroups

We compute the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariants $Σ^1$ for the generalized solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups $Γ_n$ and their finite index subgroups. Using $Σ^1$, we show that certain finite index subgroups of $Γ_n$ cannot be isomorphic to $Γ_{k}$ for any $k$. In addition, we use the BNS-invariants to give a new proof of property $R_\infty$ for the groups $Γ_n$ and their finite index subgroups.

Twisted conjugacy in free products

Let $ϕ:G\to G$ be an automorphism of a group which is a free-product of finitely many groups each of which is freely indecomposable and two of the factors contain proper finite index characteristic subgroups. We show that $G$ has infinitely many $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy classes. As an application, we show that if $G$ is the fundamental group of a three-manifold that is not irreducible, then $G$ has property $R_\infty$, that is, there are infinitely many $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy classes in $G$ for every automorphism $ϕ$ of $G$.

Automorphisms of Higher Rank Lamplighter Groups

Let $Γ_d(q)$ denote the group whose Cayley graph with respect to a particular generating set is the Diestel-Leader graph $DL_d(q)$, as described by Bartholdi, Neuhauser and Woess. We compute both $Aut(Γ_d(q))$ and $Out(Γ_d(q))$ for $d \geq 2$, and apply our results to count twisted conjugacy classes in these groups when $d \geq 3$. Specifically, we show that when $d \geq 3$, the groups $Γ_d(q)$ have property $R_{\infty}$, that is, every automorphism has an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. In contrast, when $d=2$ the lamplighter groups $Γ_2(q)=L_q = {\mathbb Z}_q \wr {\mathbb Z}$ have property $R_{\infty}$ if and only if $(q,6) \neq 1$.

On the group structure of $[Ω\mathbb S^2, ΩY]$

Let $J(X)$ denote the James construction on a space $X$ and $J_n(X)$ be the $n$-th stage of the James filtration of $J(X)$. It is known that $[J(X),ΩY]\cong \lim\limits_{\leftarrow} [J_n(X),ΩY]$ for any space $Y$. When $X=\mathbb S^1$, the circle, $J(\mathbb S^1)=ΩΣ\mathbb S^1=Ω\mathbb S^2$. Furthermore, there is a bijection between $[J(\mathbb S^1),ΩY]$ and the product $\prod_{i=2}^\infty π_i(Y)$, as sets. In this paper, we describe the group structure of $[J_n(\mathbb S^1),ΩY]$ by determining the co-multiplication structure on the suspension $ΣJ_n(\mathbb S^1)$.

The Geometric Invariants of Group Extensions Part I: Finite Extensions

In this note, we compute the Σ^1(G) invariant when 1 {\to} H {\to} G {\to} K {\to} 1 is a short exact sequence of finitely generated groups with K finite. As an application, we construct a group F semidirect Z_2 where F is the R. Thompson's group F and show that F semidirect Z_2 has the R-infinity property while F is not characteristic. Furthermore, we construct a finite extension G with finitely generated commutator subgroup G' but has a finite index normal subgroup H with infinitely generated H'.

A relationship between twisted conjugacy classes and the geometric invariants $Ω^n$

A group $G$ is said to have the property $R_\infty$ if every automorphism $ϕ\in {\rm Aut}(G)$ has an infinite number of $ϕ$-twisted conjugacy classes. Recent work of Gonçalves and Kochloukova uses the $Σ^n$ (Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz) invariants to show the $R_{\infty}$ property for a certain class of groups, including the generalized Thompson's groups $F_{n,0}$. In this paper, we make use of the $Ω^n$ invariants, analogous to $Σ^n$, to show $R_{\infty}$ for certain finitely generated groups. In particular, we give an alternate and simpler proof of the $R_{\infty}$ property for BS(1,n). Moreover, we give examples for which the $Ω^n$ invariants can be used to determine the $R_{\infty}$ property while the $Σ^n$ invariants techniques cannot.

The geometry of twisted conjugacy classes in wreath products

We give a geometric proof based on recent work of Eskin, Fisher and Whyte that the lamplighter group $L_n$ has infinitely many twisted conjugacy classes for any automorphism $\vp$ only when $n$ is divisible by 2 or 3, originally proved by Gonçalves and Wong. We determine when the wreath product $G \wr \Z$ has this same property for several classes of finite groups $G$, including symmetric groups and some nilpotent groups.

Twisted conjugacy classes in nilpotent groups

A group is said to have the $R_\infty$ property if every automorphism has an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. We study the question whether $G$ has the $R_\infty$ property when $G$ is a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group. As a consequence, we show that for every positive integer $n\ge 5$, there is a compact nilmanifold of dimension $n$ on which every homeomorphism is isotopic to a fixed point free homeomorphism. As a by-product, we give a purely group theoretic proof that the free group on two generators has the $R_\infty$ property. The $R_{\infty}$ property for virtually abelian and for $\mathcal C$-nilpotent groups are also discussed.

Equivariant path fields on topological manifolds

A classical theorem of H. Hopf asserts that a closed connected smooth manifold admits a nowhere vanishing vector field if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero. R. Brown generalized Hopf's result to topological manifolds, replacing vector fields with path fields. In this note, we give an equivariant analog of Brown's theorem for locally smooth $G$-manifolds where $G$ is a finite group.

Jiang-type theorems for coincidences of maps into homogeneous spaces

Let $f,g: X\to G/K$ be maps from a closed connected orientable manifold $X$ to an orientable coset space $M=G/K$ where $G$ is a compact connected Lie group, $K$ a closed subgroup and $\dim X=\dim M$. In this paper, we show that if $L(f,g)=0$ then $N(f,g)=0$; if $L(f,g)\ne 0$ then $N(f,g)=R(f,g)$ where $L(f,g), N(f,g)$, and $R(f,g)$ denote the Lefschetz, Nielsen, and Reidemeister coincidence numbers of $f$ and $g$, respectively. When $\dim X> \dim M$, we give conditions under which $N(f,g)=0$ implies $f$ and $g$ are deformable to be coincidence free.

On Fox spaces and Jacobi identities

In 1945, R. Fox introduced the so-called Fox torus homotopy groups in which the usual homotopy groups are embedded and their Whitehead products are expressed as commutators. A modern treatment of Fox torus homotopy groups and their generalization has been given and studied. In this note, we further explore these groups and their properties. We discuss co-multiplications on Fox spaces and a Jacobi identity for the generalized Whitehead products and the $Γ$-Whitehead products.

Twisted conjugacy and quasi-isometry invariance for generalized solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups

We say that a group has property $R_{\infty}$ if any group automorphism has an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. Fel'shtyn and Goncalves prove that the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups BS(1,m) have property $R_{\infty}$. We define a solvable generalization $Γ(S)$ of these groups which we show to have property $R_{\infty}$. We then show that property $R_{\infty}$ is geometric for these groups, that is, any group quasi-isometric to $Γ(S)$ has property $R_{\infty}$ as well.
