Stability Window of Trapless Polariton Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically explore the possibility of stabilizing the trapless polariton Bose-Einstein condensates (pBECs). Exploiting the variational method, we solve the associated nonlinear, complex Gross-Pitaevskii (cGP) equation and derive the equation of motion for the amplitude and width of the condensate. These variational results described by ordinary differential equations are rewritten to perform a linear stability analysis to generate a stability window in the repulsive domain. A set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations obtained through variational approach are then solved by numerical simulations through the fourth order Runge-Kutta method, which are further supported by split-step Crank-Nicholson method, thereby setting the platform for stable pBECs. In particular, we generate a window containing system parameters in the $g_1-γ_{eff}$ space within which the system can admit stable condensates. The highlight of the results is that one observes beating effects in the real time evolution of the condensates with attractive interactions much similar to multicomponent BECs, and their periodicity can be varied by manipulating linear and nonlinear loss/gain terms. For repulsive condensates, one notices the stretching of the density.

Suppression of extreme events and chaos in a velocity-dependent potential system with time-delay feedback

The foremost aim of this study is to investigate the influence of time-delayed feedback on extreme events in a non-polynomial system with velocity dependent potential. To begin, we investigate the effect of this feedback on extreme events for four different values of the external forcing parameter. Among these four values, in the absence of time-delayed feedback, for two values, the system does not exhibit extreme events and for the other two values, the system exhibits extreme events. On the introduction of time-delayed feedback and varying the feedback strength, we found that extreme events get suppressed as well as get induced. When the feedback is positive, suppression occurs for a larger parameter region whereas in the case of negative feedback it is restricted to the limited parameter region. We confirm our results through Lyapunov exponents, probability density function of peaks, $d_{max}$ plot and two parameter probability plot. Finally, we analyze the changes in the overall dynamics of this system under the influence of time-delayed feedback. We notice that complete suppression of chaos occurs in the considered system for higher values of the time-delayed feedback.

FACt: FORTRAN toolbox for calculating fluctuations in atomic condensates

We develop a FORTRAN code to compute fluctuations in atomic condensates (FACt) by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations for two component Bose-Einstein condensate (TBEC) in quasi two dimensions. The BdG equations are recast as matrix equations and solved self consistently. The code is suitable for handling quantum fluctuations as well as thermal fluctuations at temperatures below the critical point of Bose-Einstein condensation. The code is versatile, and the ground state density profile and low energy excitation modes obtained from the code can be easily adapted to compute different properties of TBECs -- ground state energy, overlap integral, quasi particle amplitudes of BdG spectrum, dispersion relation and structure factor and other related experimental observables.

Manipulating localized matter waves in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze vector localized solutions of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with variable nonlinearity parameter and external trap potential through similarity transformation technique which transforms the two coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations into a pair of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with constant coefficients under a specific integrability condition. In this analysis we consider three different types of external trap potentials: a time-independent trap, a time-dependent monotonic trap, and a time-dependent periodic trap. We point out the existence of different interesting localized structures, namely rogue waves, dark-and bright soliton-rogue wave, and rogue wave-breather-like wave for the above three cases of trap potentials. We show how the vector localized density profiles in a constant background get deformed when we tune the strength of the trap parameter. Further we investigate the nature of the trajectories of the nonautonomous rogue waves. We also construct the dark-dark rogue wave solution for repulsive-repulsive interaction of two-component BECs and analyze the associated characteristics for the three different kinds of traps. We then deduce single, two and three composite rogue waves for three component BECs and discuss the correlated characteristics when we tune the strength of the trap parameter for different trap potentials.

Effect of optical lattice potentials on the vortices in rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the interplay of dipole-dipole interaction and optical lattice (OL) potential of varying depths on the formation and dynamics of vortices in rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. By numerically solving the time-dependent quasi-two dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we analyse the consequence of dipole-dipole interaction on vortex nucleation, vortex structure, critical rotation frequency and number of vortices for a range of OL depths. Rapid creation of vortices has been observed due to supplementary symmetry breaking provided by the OL in addition to the dipolar interaction. Also the critical rotation frequency decreases with an increase in the depth of the OL. Further, at lower rotation frequencies the number of vortices increases on increasing the depth of OL while it decreases at higher rotation frequencies. This variation in the number of vortices has been confirmed by calculating the rms radius, which shrinks in deep optical lattice at higher rotation frequencies.

Manipulating matter-rogue waves and breathers in Bose-Einstein condensates

We construct higher order rogue wave solutions and breather profiles for the quasi-one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a time-dependent interatomic interaction and external trap through the similarity transformation technique. We consider three different forms of traps, namely (i) time-independent expulsive trap, (ii) time-dependent monotonous trap and (iii) time-dependent periodic trap. Our results show that when we change a parameter appearing in the time-independent or time-dependent trap the second and third-order rogue waves transform into the first-order like rogue waves. We also analyze the density profiles of breather solutions. Here also we show that the shapes of the breathers change when we tune the strength of trap parameter. Our results may help to manage rogue waves experimentally in a BEC system.

Collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates with binary and three body interactions in a bichromatic optical lattice

We study the impact of collisionally inhomogeneous binary and three body interaction on Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of a dilute gas in a bichromatic optical lattice. We observe that the localized matter wave density which decreases after the introduction of repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction can be sustained by the addition of constant attractive binary strength in equal amounts. If the balance between repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction and constant attractive interaction is disturbed, the condensates collapse. Reversal of sign of interaction ensures the longevity of BECs. Any imbalance between attractive spatially inhomogeneous interaction and constant repulsive interaction either results in the collapse of BECs or in the occupation of the condensates at multiple sites on either sides. The introduction of a weak three body interaction in phase with the binary interaction increases the extent of instability of BECs. Reversing the sign of spatially inhomogeneous and constant interaction enhances the stability of BECs.

Vortical and fundamental solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in isotropic and anisotropic nonlinear potentials

We predict the existence of stable fundamental and vortical bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with repulsive dipole-dipole interactions (DDI). The condensate is trapped in the 2D plane with the help of the repulsive contact interactions whose local strength grows $\sim r^{4}$ from the center to periphery, while dipoles are oriented perpendicular to the self-trapping plane. The confinement in the perpendicular direction is provided by the usual harmonic-oscillator potential. The objective is to extend the recently induced concept of the self-trapping of bright solitons and solitary vortices in the pseudopotential, which is induced by the repulsive local nonlinearity with the strength growing from the center to periphery, to the case when the trapping mechanism competes with the long-range repulsive DDI. Another objective is to extend the analysis for elliptic vortices and solitons in an anisotropic nonlinear pseudopotential. Using the variational approximation (VA) and numerical simulations, we construct families of self-trapped modes with vorticities $\ell =0$ (fundamental solitons), $\ell =1$, and $\ell =2$. The fundamental solitons and vortices with $\ell =1$ exist up to respective critical values of the eccentricity of the anisotropic pseudopotential, being stable in the entire existence regions. The vortices with $\ell =2$ are stable solely in the isotropic model.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate for large scattering length

A uniform dilute Bose gas of known density has a universal behavior as the atomic scattering length tends to infinity at unitarity while most of its properties are determined by a universal parameter $ξ$ relating the energies of the noninteracting and unitary gases. The usual mean-field equation is not valid in this limit and beyond mean-field corrections become important. We use a dynamical model including such corrections to investigate a trapped disk-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and a dipolar BEC vortex for large scattering length. We study the sensitivity of our results on the parameter $ξ$ and discuss the possibility of extracting the value of this parameter from experimental observables.

Two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate bright and vortex solitons on one-dimensional optical lattice

By solving the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we generate two-dimensional axially-symmetric and anisotropic dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate bright solitons, for repulsive atomic interaction, stabilized by only a weak one-dimensional optical lattice (OL) aligned along and perpendicular, respectively, to the dipole polarization direction. In the former case vortex solitons can also be created. We show that it is possible to make a stable array of small interacting axially-symmetric dipolar solitons put on alternate OL sites. Further, we demonstrate the elastic nature of the collision of two such solitons.

Vortex dynamics of rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the influence of dipole-dipole interaction on the formation of vortices in a rotating dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{52}$Cr and $^{164}$Dy atoms in quasi two-dimensional geometry. By numerically solving the corresponding time-dependent mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we show that the dipolar interaction enhances the number of vortices while a repulsive contact interaction increases the stability of the vortices. Further, an ordered vortex lattice of relatively large number of vortices is found in a strongly dipolar BEC.

Anisotropic sound and shock waves in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the propagation of anisotropic sound and shock waves in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in three dimensions (3D) as well as in quasi-two (2D, disk shape) and quasi-one (1D, cigar shape) dimensions using the mean-field approach. In 3D, the propagation of sound and shock waves are distinct in directions parallel and perpendicular to dipole axis with the appearance of instability above a critical value corresponding to attraction. Similar instability appears in 1D and not in 2D. The numerical anisotropic Mach angle agrees with theoretical prediction. The numerical sound velocity in all cases agrees with that calculated from Bogoliubov theory. A movie of the anisotropic wave propagation in a dipolar condensate is made available as supplementary material.

Coreless vortex dipoles and bubbles in phase-separated binary condensates

Vortex dipoles are generated when an obstacle moves through a superfluid. In case of phase-separated binary condensates, with appropriate interaction parameters in pan-cake shaped traps, we show that coreless vortex dipoles are created when a Gaussian obstacle beam traverses across them above a critical speed. As the obstacle passes through the inner component, it carries along a bubble of the outer component. Using Thomas-Fermi approximation, we show that phase-separated binary condensates can either support vortices with empty or filled cores. For time dependent obstacle potentials, ramped down in the present case, relative energy scales of the system influence the dynamical evolution of the binary condensate.

Dynamics of gap solitons in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate on a three-dimensional optical lattice

We suggest and study the stable disk- and cigar-shaped gap solitons of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{52}$Cr atoms localized in the lowest band gap by three optical-lattice (OL) potentials along orthogonal directions. The one-dimensional version of these solitons of experimental interest confined by an OL along the dipole moment direction and harmonic traps in transverse directions is also considered. Important dynamics of (i) breathing oscillation of a gap soliton upon perturbation and (ii) dragging of a gap soliton by a moving lattice along axial $z$ direction demonstrates the stability of gap solitons. A movie clip of dragging of three-dimensional gap soliton is included.

Dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional bright and vortex solitons of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interaction

By numerical and variational analysis of the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the formation and dynamics of bright and vortex-bright solitons in a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate for large repulsive atomic interactions. Phase diagram showing the region of stability of the solitons is obtained. We also study the dynamics of breathing oscillation of the solitons as well as the collision dynamics of two solitons at large velocities. Two solitons placed side-by-side at rest coalesce to form a stable bound soliton molecule due to dipolar attraction.

Formation, dynamics and stability of coreless vortex dipoles in phase-separated binary condensates

We study the motion of the Gaussian obstacle potential created by blue detuned laser beam through a phase-separated binary condensate in pancake-shaped traps. For the velocity of the obstacle above a critical velocity, we observe the generation of vortex dipoles in the outer component which can penetrate the inner component. This is equivalent to finite, although small, transport of outer component across the inner component. In the inner component, the same method can lead to the formation of coreless vortex dipoles.

Fortran programs for the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation in a fully anisotropic trap

We develop simple numerical algorithms for both stationary and non-stationary solutions of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation describing the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates at ultra low temperatures. In particular, we consider algorithms involving real and imaginary-time propagation based on a split-step Crank-Nicolson method. In a one-space-variable form of the GP equation we consider the one-dimensional linear, two-dimensional circularly symmetric, and the three-dimensional spherically-symmetric traps. In the two-space-variable form we consider the GP equation in two-dimensional anisotropic and three-dimensional axially-symmetric traps. The fully-anisotropic three-dimensional GP equation is also considered. Numerical results for the chemical potential and root-mean-square size of stationary states are reported using imaginary-time propagation programs for all the cases and compared with previously obtained results. Also presented are numerical results of non-stationary oscillation for different trap symmetries using real-time propagation programs. A set of convenient working codes developed in Fortran 77 are also provided for all these cases (twelve programs in all). In the case of two or three space variables, {Fortran 90/95 versions provide some simplification over the Fortran 77 programs}, and these programs are also included (six programs in all).

Numerical and variational solutions of the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation in reduced dimensions

We suggest a simple Gaussian Lagrangian variational scheme for the reduced time-dependent quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in cigar and disk configurations, respectively. The variational approximation for stationary states and breathing oscillation dynamics in reduced dimensions agrees well with the numerical solution of the GP equation even for moderately large short-range and dipolar nonlinearities. The Lagrangian variational scheme also provides much physical insight about soliton formation in dipolar BEC.

Bright and dark solitons in a quasi 1D Bose-Einstein condensates modelled by 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time-dependent parameters

We investigate the exact bright and dark solitary wave solutions of an effective one dimensional (1D) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by assuming that the interaction energy is much less than the kinetic energy in the transverse direction. In particular, following the earlier works in the literature Pérez-García et al. [Physica D 221 (2006) 31], Serkin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98 (2007) 074102], Gürses [arXiv:0704.2435] and Kundu [Phys. Rev. E 79 (2009) 015601], we point out that the effective 1D equation res ulting from the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation can be transformed into the stand ard soliton (bright/dark) possessing, completely integrable 1D nonlinear Schrö dinger (NLS) equation by effecting a change of variables of the coordinates and the wave function. We consider both confining and expulsive harmonic trap potentials separately and treat the atomic scattering length, gain/loss term and trap frequency as the experimental control parameters by modulating them as a function of time. In the case when the trap frequency is kept constant, we show the existence of different kinds of soliton solutions, such as the periodic oscillating solitons, collapse and revival of condensate, snake-like solitons, stable solitons, soliton growth and decay and formation of two-soliton like bound state, as the atomic scattering length and gain/loss term are varied. However when the trap frequency is also modulated, we show the phenomena of collapse and revival of two-soliton like bound state formation of the condensate for double modulated periodic potential and bright and dark solitons for step-wise modulated potentials.

Localization of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a bichromatic optical lattice

By numerical simulation and variational analysis of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the localization, with an exponential tail, of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (DBEC) of $^{52}$Cr atoms in a three-dimensional bichromatic optical-lattice (OL) generated by two monochromatic OL of incommensurate wavelengths along three orthogonal directions. For a fixed dipole-dipole interaction, a localized state of a small number of atoms ($\sim 1000$) could be obtained when the short-range interaction is not too attractive or not too repulsive. A phase diagram showing the region of stability of a DBEC with short-range interaction and dipole-dipole interaction is given.

Position swapping and pinching in Bose-Fermi mixtures with two-color optical Feshbach resonances

We examine the density profiles of the quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of $^{174}$Yb-$^{173}$Yb, experimental observed recently, in the mean field regime. In this mixture there is a possibility of tuning the Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi interactions simultaneously using two well separated optical Feshbach resonances, and it is a good candidate to explore phase separation in Bose-Fermi mixtures. Depending on the Bose-Bose scattering length $a_\BB$, as the Bose-Fermi interaction is tuned the density of the fermions is pinched or swapping with bosons occurs.

Scaling and synchronization in a ring of diffusively coupled nonlinear oscillators

Chaos synchronization in a ring of diffusively coupled nonlinear oscillators driven by an external identical oscillator is studied. Based on numerical simulations we show that by introducing additional couplings at $(mN_c+1)$-th oscillators in the ring, where $m$ is an integer and $N_c$ is the maximum number of synchronized oscillators in the ring with a single coupling, the maximum number of oscillators that can be synchronized can be increased considerably beyond the limit restricted by size instability. We also demonstrate that there exists an exponential relation between the number of oscillators that can support stable synchronization in the ring with the external drive and the critical coupling strength $ε_c$ with a scaling exponent $γ$. The critical coupling strength is calculated by numerically estimating the synchronization error and is also confirmed from the conditional Lyapunov exponents (CLEs) of the coupled systems. We find that the same scaling relation exists for $m$ couplings between the drive and the ring. Further, we have examined the robustness of the synchronous states against Gaussian white noise and found that the synchronization error exhibits a power-law decay as a function of the noise intensity indicating the existence of both noise-enhanced and noise-induced synchronizations depending on the value of the coupling strength $ε$. In addition, we have found that $ε_c$ shows an exponential decay as a function of the number of additional couplings. These results are demonstrated using the paradigmatic models of Rössler and Lorenz oscillators.
