Randomness and Frustration in a S = 1/2 Square-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We explore the interplay between randomness and magnetic frustration in the series of $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg square-lattice compounds Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$. Substituting W for Te alters the magnetic interactions dramatically, from strongly nearest-neighbor to next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling. We perform neutron scattering measurements to probe the magnetic ground state and excitations over a range of $x$. We propose a bond-disorder model that reproduces ground states with only short-ranged spin correlations in the mixed compounds. The calculated neutron diffraction patterns and powder spectra agree well with the measured data and allow detailed predictions for future measurements. We conclude that quenched randomness plays the major role in defining the physics of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ with frustration being less significant.

Fe3Se4: A Possible Ferrimagnetic Half-Metal?

Half-metallic ferromagnets show 100% spin-polarization at the Fermi level and are ideal candidates for spintronic applications. Despite the extensive research in the field, very few materials have been discovered so far. Here we present results of electronic band structure calculations based on density functional theory and extensive physical-property measurements for Fe3Se4 revealing signatures of half-metallicity. The spin-polarized electronic band structure calculations predict half-metallic ferrimagnetism for Fe3Se4. The electrical resistivity follows exponentially suppressed electron-magnon scattering mechanism in the low-temperature regime and show a magnetoresistance effect that changes the sign from negative to positive with decreasing temperature around 100 K. Other intriguing observations include the anomalous behavior of Hall resistance below 100 K and an anomalous Hall coefficient that roughly follows the \r{ho}2 behavior.

Long and short range magnetism in the frustrated double perovskite Ba2MnWO6

The structural and magnetic properties of the face-centered cubic double perovskite Ba2MnWO6 were investigated using neutron powder diffraction, DC-magnetometry, muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering. Ba2MnWO6 undergoes Type II long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at a Neel temperature of 8(1) K with a frustration index, f = 8. Inelastic neutron scattering was used to identify the magnetic coupling constants J1 and J2, which were found to equal -0.080 meV and -0.076 meV respectively. This indicated that both of the magnetic coupling constants were antiferromagnetic with similar magnitudes, which is in contrast to other known 3d metal double perovskites Ba2MWO6. Above the Neel temperature, muon spin relaxation measurements and inelastic neutron scattering techniques identify a short-range correlated magnetic state that is similar to that observed in the archetypical face-centered cubic lattice antiferromagnet MnO.
