Randomness and Frustration in a S = 1/2 Square-Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We explore the interplay between randomness and magnetic frustration in the series of $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg square-lattice compounds Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$. Substituting W for Te alters the magnetic interactions dramatically, from strongly nearest-neighbor to next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling. We perform neutron scattering measurements to probe the magnetic ground state and excitations over a range of $x$. We propose a bond-disorder model that reproduces ground states with only short-ranged spin correlations in the mixed compounds. The calculated neutron diffraction patterns and powder spectra agree well with the measured data and allow detailed predictions for future measurements. We conclude that quenched randomness plays the major role in defining the physics of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ with frustration being less significant.

Fe3Se4: A Possible Ferrimagnetic Half-Metal?

Half-metallic ferromagnets show 100% spin-polarization at the Fermi level and are ideal candidates for spintronic applications. Despite the extensive research in the field, very few materials have been discovered so far. Here we present results of electronic band structure calculations based on density functional theory and extensive physical-property measurements for Fe3Se4 revealing signatures of half-metallicity. The spin-polarized electronic band structure calculations predict half-metallic ferrimagnetism for Fe3Se4. The electrical resistivity follows exponentially suppressed electron-magnon scattering mechanism in the low-temperature regime and show a magnetoresistance effect that changes the sign from negative to positive with decreasing temperature around 100 K. Other intriguing observations include the anomalous behavior of Hall resistance below 100 K and an anomalous Hall coefficient that roughly follows the \r{ho}2 behavior.

Spin state of Co$^{3+}$ in LaCo$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_{3}$ investigated by structural phenomena

Neutron diffraction for a polycrystalline sample of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ and synchrotron x-ray diffraction for polycrystalline samples of LaCo$_{0.9}$Rh$_{0.1}$O$_{3}$ and LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ have been carried out in order to investigate the structural properties related with the spin state of Co$^{3+}$ ions. We have found that the values of the Co(Rh)-O bond lengths in the Co(Rh)O$_{6}$ octahedron of LaCo$_{0.8}$Rh$_{0.2}$O$_{3}$ are nearly identical at 10 K. The lattice volume for the Rh$^{3+}$ substituted samples decreases with the thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of LaCoO$_{3}$ from room temperature, and ceases to decrease around 70 K. These experimental results favor a mixed state consisting of the high-spin-state and low-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions, and suggest that the high-spin-state Co$^{3+}$ ions are thermally excited in addition to those pinned by the substituted Rh$^{3+}$ ions.
