$\mathcal{N}=1$ S-fold spectroscopy

We analyse the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein excitations above three distinct families of ${\cal N}=1$ AdS$_4$ solutions of type IIB supergravity of typically non-geometric, S-fold type that have been recently found. For all three families, we provide the complete algebraic structure of their spectra, including the content of OSp$(4|1)$ multiplets at all Kaluza-Klein levels and their charges under the residual symmetry groups. We also provide extensive results for the multiplet dimensions using new methods derived from exceptional field theory, including complete, analytic results for one of the families. All three spectra show periodicity in the moduli that label the corresponding family of solutions. Finally, the compactness of these moduli is verified in some cases at the level of the fully-fledged type IIB uplifted solutions.

The spectrum of marginally-deformed ${\cal N} = 2$ CFTs with AdS$_4$ S-fold duals of type IIB

A holographic duality was recently established between an ${\cal N} =4$ non-geometric AdS$_4$ solution of type IIB supergravity in the so-called S-fold class, and a three-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) defined as a limit of ${\cal N} =4$ super-Yang-Mills at an interface. Using gauged supergravity, the ${\cal N} =2$ conformal manifold (CM) of this CFT has been assessed to be two-dimensional. Here, we holographically characterise the large-$N$ operator spectrum of the marginally-deformed CFT. We do this by, firstly, providing the algebraic structure of the complete Kaluza-Klein (KK) spectrum on the associated two-parameter family of AdS$_4$ solutions. And, secondly, by computing the ${\cal N} =2$ supermultiplet dimensions at the first few KK levels on a lattice in the CM, using new exceptional field theory techniques. Our KK analysis also allows us to establish that, at least at large $N$, this ${\cal N} =2$ CM is topologically a non-compact cylindrical Riemann surface bounded on only one side.

Flowing to $\mathcal{N}=3$ Chern--Simons-matter theory

New renormalisation group flows of three-dimensional Chern--Simons theories with a single gauge group $\textrm{SU}(N)$ and adjoint matter are found holographically. These RG flows have an infrared fixed point given by a CFT with $\mathcal{N}=3$ supersymmetry and $\text{SU}(2)$ flavour symmetry. The ultraviolet fixed point is again described by a CFT with either $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\text{SU}(3)$ symmetry or $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\text{G}_{2}$ symmetry. The gauge/gravity duals of these RG flows are constructed as domain-wall solutions of a gauged supergravity model in four dimensions that enjoys an embedding into massive IIA supergravity. A concrete RG flow that brings a mass deformation of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ CFT into the $\mathcal{N}=3$ CFT at low energies is described in detail.

Universal properties of Kaluza-Klein gravitons

Vacua of different gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity that preserve the same supersymmetries and bosonic symmetry tend to exhibit the same universal mass spectrum within their respective supergravities. For AdS$_4$ vacua in gauged supergravities that arise upon consistent truncation of string/M-theory, we show that this universality is lost at higher Kaluza-Klein levels. However, universality is still maintained in a milder form, as certain sums over a finite number of states remain universal. Further, we derive a mass matrix for Kaluza-Klein gravitons which is valid for all the AdS$_4$ vacua in string/M-theory that uplift from the gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity that we consider. The mild universality of mass sums is related to the trace of this mass matrix.

Halving ISO(7) supergravity

Half-maximal, $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$, sectors of $\,D=4\,$ $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging are investigated. We focus on a half-maximal sector including three vector multiplets, that arises as a certain $\,\textrm{SO}(3)_{\textrm{R}}$-invariant sector of the full theory. We discuss the embedding of this sector into the largest half-maximal sector of the $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity retaining six vector multiplets. We also provide its canonical $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ formulation and show that, from this perspective, our model leads in its own right to a new explicit gauging of $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ supergravity. Finally, expressions for the restricted duality hierarchy are given and the vacuum structure is investigated. Five new non-supersymmetric AdS vacua are found numerically. The previously known $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ AdS vacua are also contained in our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model. Unlike when embedded in previously considered sectors with fewer fields, these vacua exhibit their full $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ supersymmetry within our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model.

Minimal $D = 4$ $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supergravity from $D = 11$: An M-theory free lunch

We present a new consistent truncation of $D=11$ supergravity to $D=4$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal gauged supergravity, on the seven-dimensional internal Riemannian space corresponding to the most general class of $D=11$ solutions with an AdS$_{4}$ factor and $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. A truncation ansatz is proposed and its consistency checked at the level of the $D=11$ Bianchi identity, bosonic equations of motion, and supersymmetry variations of the gravitino. The general class includes an $\mathcal{N}=2$ AdS$_{4}$ solution dual to the conformal, low-energy physics phase corresponding to a mass deformation of the M2-brane field theory. A consistent truncation recently constructed on this particular geometry is recovered from our formalism.

Minimal $D=4$ truncations of type IIA

Consistent embeddings are found of the minimal $\mathcal{N} = 2$ and $\mathcal{N} = 3$ gauged supergravities in four dimensions into its maximally supersymmetric, $\mathcal{N} = 8$, counterpart with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging. These minimal truncations retain the metric along with relevant U(1) and SO(3) R-symmetry gauge fields selected from the ISO(7) ones. The remaining ISO(7) gauge fields are turned off, with subtleties introduced by the dyonic gauging, and the scalars are fixed to their expectation values at the $\mathcal{N} = 2$ and $\mathcal{N} = 3$ vacua of the $\mathcal{N} = 8$ theory. Using the truncation formulae for massive type IIA supergravity on the six-sphere to $D=4$ $\mathcal{N} = 8$ ISO(7) supergravity, the minimal $D=4$ $\mathcal{N} = 2$ and $\mathcal{N} = 3$ gauged supergravities are then uplifted consistently to ten dimensions.

AdS$_4$ solutions of massive IIA from dyonic ISO(7) supergravity

Explicit formulae are given for the consistent truncation of massive type IIA supergravity on the six-sphere to the SU(3)--invariant sector of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity with dyonic ISO(7) gauging. These formulae are then used to construct AdS$_4$ solutions of massive type IIA via uplift on $S^6$ of the critical points of the $D=4$ supergravity with at least SU(3) symmetry. We find a new ${\cal N}=1$ solution with SU(3) symmetry, a new non-supersymmetric solution with SO(6) symmetry, and recover previously known solutions. We quantise the fluxes, calculate the gravitational free energies of the solutions and discuss the stability of the non-supersymmetric ones. Among these, a (previously known) G$_2$--invariant solution is found to be stable.

Dyonic ISO(7) supergravity and the duality hierarchy

Motivated by its well defined higher dimensional origin, a detailed study of $D=4$ $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity with a dyonically gauged $\textrm{ISO}(7) = \textrm{SO}(7) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^7$ gauge group is performed. We write down the Lagrangian and describe the tensor and duality hierarchies, focusing on an interesting subsector with closed field equations and supersymmetry transformations. We then truncate the $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory to some smaller sectors with $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and SU(3), $\textrm{G}_2$ and SO(4) bosonic symmetry. Canonical and superpotential formulations for these sectors are given, and their vacuum structure and spectra is analysed. Unlike the purely electric ISO(7) gauging, the dyonic gauging displays a rich structure of vacua, all of them AdS. We recover all previously known ones and find a new $\mathcal{N}=1$ vacuum with SU(3) symmetry and various non-supersymmetric vacua, all of them stable within the full $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory.

Romans-mass-driven flows on the D2-brane

The addition of supersymmetric Chern-Simons terms to ${\cal N}=8$ super-Yang-Mills theory in three-dimensions is expected to make the latter flow into infrared superconformal phases. We address this problem holographically by studying the effect of the Romans mass on the D2-brane near-horizon geometry. Working in a consistent, effective four-dimensional setting provided by $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity with a dyonic $\textrm{ISO(7)}$ gauging, we verify the existence of a rich web of supersymmetric domain walls triggered by the Romans mass that interpolate between the (four-dimensional description of the) D2-brane and various superconformal phases. We also construct domain walls for which both endpoints are superconformal. While most of our results are numerical, we provide analytic results for the $\textrm{SU}(3)\times \textrm{U}(1)$-invariant flow into an ${\cal N}=2$ conformal phase recently discovered.

Consistent ${\cal N}=8$ truncation of massive IIA on $S^6$

Massive type IIA supergravity is shown to admit a consistent truncation on the six-sphere to maximal supergravity in four dimensions with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging. We obtain the complete, non-linear embedding of all the $D=4$ fields into the IIA metric and form potentials, and show its consistency. We first rewrite the IIA theory in an $\textrm{SO}(1,3) \times \textrm{SL}(7)$--covariant way. Then, we employ an ${\cal N}=8$ SL(7)--covariant restriction of the $D=4$ tensor hierarchy in order to find the full embedding. The redundant $D=4$ degrees of freedom introduced by the tensor hierarchy can be eliminated by writing the embedding in terms of the field strengths and exploiting the restricted duality hierarchy. In particular, closed expressions for the Freund-Rubin term are found using this technique which reveal a pattern valid for other truncations. Finally, we show that the present ${\cal N}=8$ truncation of massive IIA on $S^6$ and the ${\cal N}=2$ truncation obtained when $S^6$ is equipped with its nearly-Kähler structure, overlap in the ${\cal N}=1$, G$_2$--invariant sector of the former.

Electric/magnetic duality and RG flows in AdS4/CFT3

A large set of relevant deformations of the ABJM field theory on a stack of M2 branes is captured holographically by D=4 N=8 SO(8)-gauged supergravity, which has accordingly been applied to study renormalisation group (RG) flows of the field theory between distinct superconformal phases. Recently, it has been discovered that this supergravity is not unique, and that a one-parameter family of gaugings of maximal supergravity exists. The parameter is an angle that measures the mixture of electric and magnetic vectors that gauge SO(8) dyonically. We construct and comprehensively characterise all domain walls between the critical points of the new supergravities with at least SU(3) invariance, which are expected to be dual to RG flows of new field theories defined at least at large N. We also construct some walls running off to infinity in scalar space, which we expect to be dual to Coulomb branch flows of these field theories.

IIB Supergravity and the E6(6) covariant vector-tensor hierarchy

IIB supergravity is reformulated with a manifest local USp(8) invariance that makes the embedding of five-dimensional maximal supergravities transparent. In this formulation the ten-dimensional theory exhibits all the 27 one-form fields and 22 of the 27 two-form fields that are required by the vector-tensor hierarchy of the five-dimensional theory. The missing 5 two-form fields must transform in the same representation as a descendant of the ten-dimensional `dual graviton'. The invariant E6(6) symmetric tensor that appears in the vector-tensor hierarchy is reproduced. Generalized vielbeine are derived from the supersymmetry transformations of the vector fields, as well as consistent expressions for the USp(8) covariant fermion fields. Implications are discussed for the consistency of the truncation of IIB supergravity compactified on the five-sphere to maximal gauged supergravity in five space-time dimensions with an SO(6) gauge group.

Rholography, Black Holes and Scherk-Schwarz

We present both the macroscopic and microscopic description of a class of near-extremal asymptotically flat black hole solutions in four (or five) dimensional gauged supergravity with R-symmetry gaugings obtained from Scherk-Schwarz reductions on a circle. The entropy of these black holes is counted holographically by the well known MSW (or D1/D5) system, with certain twisted boundary conditions labeled by a twist parameter ρ. We find that the corresponding (0,4) (or (4,4)) superconformal algebras are exactly those studied by Schwimmer and Seiberg, using a twist on the outer automorphism group. The interplay between R-symmetries, ρ-algebras and holography leads us to name our construction "Rholography".

The string origin of dyonic ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity and its simple Chern-Simons duals

We clarify the higher-dimensional origin of a class of dyonic gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity recently discovered, when the gauge group is chosen to be ISO(7). This dyonically-gauged maximal supergravity arises from consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on $S^6$, and its magnetic coupling constant descends directly from the Romans mass. The critical points of the supergravity uplift to new AdS$_4$ massive type IIA vacua. We identify the corresponding CFT$_3$ duals as super-Chern-Simons-matter theories with simple gauge group SU$(N)$, with level $k$ given by the Romans mass. In particular, we find a critical point that uplifts to the first explicit ${\cal N}=2$ AdS$_4$ massive IIA background. We compute its free energy and that of the candidate dual Chern-Simons theory by localisation to a solvable matrix model, and find perfect agreement. This provides the first AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ precision match in massive type IIA string theory.

Charged black rings from inverse scattering

The inverse scattering method of Belinsky and Zakharov is a powerful method to construct solutions of vacuum Einstein equations. In particular, in five dimensions this method has been successfully applied to construct a large variety of black hole solutions. Recent applications of this method to Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMd) theory, for the special case of Kaluza-Klein dilaton coupling, has led to the construction of the most general black ring in this theory. In this contribution, we review the inverse scattering method and its application to the EMd theory. We illustrate the efficiency of these methods with a detailed construction of an electrically charged black ring.

All homogeneous N=2 M-theory truncations with supersymmetric AdS4 vacua

We study consistent truncations of M-theory to gauged N=2 supergravity in four dimensions, based on a large class of SU(3)-structures in seven dimensions. We show that the gauging involves isometries of the vector multiplet scalar manifold as well as the Heisenberg algebra and a special isometry of the hyperscalar manifold. As a result, non-abelian gauge groups and new non-trivial scalar potentials are generated. Then we specialize to all homogeneous SU(3)-structures supporting supersymmetric AdS4 vacua. These are the Stiefel manifold V52, the Aloff-Wallach spaces N(k,l), the seven-sphere (seen as SU(4)/SU(3) or Sp(2)/Sp(1)) and the M110 and Q111 coset spaces. For each of these cases, we describe in detail the N=2 model and discuss its peculiarities.

An electrically charged doubly spinning dipole black ring

We present a new asymptotically flat, doubly spinning black ring of D = 5 Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with Kaluza-Klein dilaton coupling. Besides the mass and two angular momenta, the solution displays both electric charge and (magnetic) dipole charge. The class of solutions that are free from conical singularities is described by four parameters. We first derive the solution in six dimensions employing the inverse scattering method, thereby generalising the inverse-scattering construction by two of the current authors of Emparan's singly spinning dipole black ring. The novel black ring itself arises upon circle Kaluza-Klein reduction. We also compute the main physical properties and asymptotic charges of our new class of solutions. Finally, we present a five-parameter generalisation of our solution.

Consistent reductions from D=11 beyond Sasaki-Einstein

The most general class of warped AdS5 x M6 supersymmetric solutions in D=11 supergravity permit a consistent truncation to D=5 N=2 minimal gauged supergravity. Here we extend this truncation, for a particular subclass of M6 manifolds, to D=5 N=4 gauged supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets. We obtain the reduction ansatz by T-duality of a recently discussed type IIB truncation on a generic Sasaki-Einstein five-fold, which becomes non-trivial in D=11 and displays non-standard features due to the G-structure of the internal M6. Using this truncation, we construct two new classes of warped and unwarped non-supersymmetric AdS5 M-theory backgrounds. We also comment on possible extensions of the reduction ansatz to the general class of M6 geometries.

Spatiotemporal amplitude-and-phase reconstruction by Fourier-transform of interference spectra of high-complex-beams

We propose a novel method to reconstruct the spatio-temporal amplitude and phase of the electric field of ultrashort laser pulses using spatially-resolved spectral interferometry. This method is based on a fiber-optic coupler interferometer that has certain advantages in comparison with standard interferometer systems, such as it being alignment-free and selection of the reference beam at a single point. Our technique, which we refer to as STARFISH, offers compactness and simplicity. We report its application to the experimental characterization of chirped pulses and to spatio-temporal reconstructions of a convergent beam as well as plane-plane and spherical-plane waves interferences, which we check with our simulations.

Universal Kaluza-Klein reductions of type IIB to N=4 supergravity in five dimensions

We construct explicit consistent Kaluza-Klein reductions of type IIB supergravity on HK_4 x S^1, where HK_4 is an arbitrary four-dimensional hyper-Kaehler manifold, and on SE5, an arbitrary five-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifold. In the former case we obtain the bosonic action of D=5 N=4 (ungauged) supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets. For the SE_5 case we extend a known reduction, which leads to minimal D=5 N=2 gauged supergravity, to also include a multiplet of massive fields, containing the breathing mode of the SE_5. We show that the resulting D=5 action is also consistent with N=4 gauged supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets. This theory has a supersymmetric AdS_5 vacuum, which uplifts to the class of supersymmetric AdS_5 x SE_5 solutions, that spontaneously breaks N=4 to N=2, and also a non-supersymmetric AdS_5 vacuum which uplifts to a class of solutions first found by Romans.

Wrapped M5-branes, consistent truncations and AdS/CMT

At the level of the bosonic fields, we construct consistent Kaluza--Klein reductions of D=11 supergravity on $Σ_3\times S^4$, where $Σ_3=H^3/Γ,S^3/Γ$ or $R^3/Γ$ where $Γ$ is a discrete group of isometries. The result is the bosonic content of an N=2 D=4 gauged supergravity with a single vector multiplet and two hypermultiplets, whose scalar fields parametrise $SU(1,1)/U(1)\times G_{2(2)}/SO(4)$. %, and the gauging is only in the hypermultiplet When $Σ_3=H^3/Γ$ the D=4 theory has an $AdS_4$ vacuum which uplifts to the known supersymmetric $AdS_4\times H^3/Γ\times S^4$ solution of D=11 supergravity that describes the N=2 $d=3$ SCFT arising when M5-branes wrap SLag 3-cycles $H^3/Γ$ in Calabi-Yau three-folds. We use the KK reduction for $Σ_3=H^3/Γ$ to construct D=11 black hole solutions that describe these d=3 SCFTs at finite temperature and charge density and show that there is a superconducting instability involving a charged scalar field, and another instability involving involving neutral fields including both scalar and vector fields. We also use this KK reduction to construct a D=11 Lifshitz solution that is dual to a d=3 field theory with dynamical exponent $z\sim 39$.

Non-relativistic M-Theory solutions based on Kaehler-Einstein spaces

We present new families of non-supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity with non-relativistic symmetry, based on six-dimensional Kaehler-Einstein manifolds. In constructing these solutions, we make use of a consistent reduction to a five-dimensional gravity theory coupled to a massive scalar and vector field. This theory admits a non-relativistic CFT dual with dynamical exponent z=4, which may be uplifted to D=11 supergravity. Finally, we generalise this solution and find new solutions with various z, including z=2.

D=5 SU(2)xU(1) Gauged Supergravity from D=11 Supergravity

We consider the most general class of supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity consisting of a warped product of AdS_5 with a six-dimensional internal manifold N_6, which are dual to N=2 super conformal field theories in d=4. For any such N_6 we construct the full non-linear Kaluza-Klein ansatz for the reduction of D=11 supergravity on N_6 down to D=5 SU(2)xU(1) gauged supergravity, at the level of the bosonic fields. This allows one to uplift any solution of the D=5 supergravity to obtain a solution of D=11 supergravity for any given N_6. Using an explicit N_6, corresponding to M5-branes wrapping holomorphic curves in a Calabi-Yau two-fold, we uplift some solutions and comment upon their interpretation.

Properties of some conformal field theories with M-theory duals

By studying classes of supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity with AdS_5 factors, we determine some properties of the dual four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories. For some explicit solutions we calculate the central charges and also the conformal dimensions of certain chiral primary operators arising from wrapped membranes. For the most general class of solutions we show that there is a consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation to minimal D=5 gauged supergravity. This latter result allows us to study some aspects of the dual strongly coupled thermal plasma with a non-zero R-charge chemical potential and, in particular, we show that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density has the universal value of 1/4 pi.

Higher Order Integrability in Generalized Holonomy

Supersymmetric backgrounds in M-theory often involve four-form flux in addition to pure geometry. In such cases, the classification of supersymmetric vacua involves the notion of generalized holonomy taking values in SL(32,R), the Clifford group for eleven-dimensional spinors. Although previous investigations of generalized holonomy have focused on the curvature \Rm_{MN}(Ω) of the generalized SL(32,R) connection Ω_M, we demonstrate that this local information is incomplete, and that satisfying the higher order integrability conditions is an essential feature of generalized holonomy. We also show that, while this result differs from the case of ordinary Riemannian holonomy, it is nevertheless compatible with the Ambrose-Singer holonomy theorem.
