Type IIB S-folds: flat deformations, holography and stability

We review recent progress in the study of S-folds in light of the gauge/gravity duality and the AdS swampland conjecture. S-folds correspond to non-geometric backgrounds of type IIB supergravity of the form $\,\textrm{AdS}_4 \, \times \, \textrm{S}^1 \, \times \, \mathcal{M}\,$ that involve a non-trivial $\,\textrm{SL}(2,\,\mathbb{Z})\,$ (S-duality) monodromy for the type IIB fields when moving around the $\,\textrm{S}^1$. We present four such solutions with $\,\mathcal{M}=\textrm{S}^{5}\,$ that preserve $\,\mathcal{N}=4,2,1,0\,$ supersymmetries. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, these solutions are conjectured to describe new strongly coupled three-dimensional CFT's on a localised interface of SYM. We discuss the existence of flat deformations in the gravity side dual to marginal deformations of the conjectured S-fold CFT's. From a geometrical perspective, the flat deformations induce a monodromy $\,h\,$ on $\,\mathcal{M}\,$ and replace $\,\textrm{S}^1 \,\times\, \mathcal{M}\,$ by the so-called mapping torus $\,T(\mathcal{M})_h$. Interestingly, the flat deformations provide a controlled mechanism of supersymmetry breaking for $\,\mathcal{N} \ge 2\,$ S-folds. We present a class of such non-supersymmetric S-folds obtained by flat-deforming the $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ S-fold and discuss their (non-)perturbative stability.

Stable non-supersymmetric Anti-de Sitter vacua of massive IIA supergravity

Stable non-supersymmetric Anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua of string theory are widely believed not to exist. In this letter, we analytically compute the full bosonic Kaluza-Klein spectrum around the ${\rm G_2}$-invariant non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_4$ solution of massive IIA supergravity, and show that it is perturbatively stable. We also provide evidence that six other non-supersymmetric $\textrm{AdS}_4$ solutions of massive IIA supergravity are perturbatively stable. Since previous studies have indicated that these AdS vacua may also be non-perturbatively stable, our findings pose a challenge to the Swampland Conjecture.

Flowing to $\mathcal{N}=3$ Chern--Simons-matter theory

New renormalisation group flows of three-dimensional Chern--Simons theories with a single gauge group $\textrm{SU}(N)$ and adjoint matter are found holographically. These RG flows have an infrared fixed point given by a CFT with $\mathcal{N}=3$ supersymmetry and $\text{SU}(2)$ flavour symmetry. The ultraviolet fixed point is again described by a CFT with either $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\text{SU}(3)$ symmetry or $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\text{G}_{2}$ symmetry. The gauge/gravity duals of these RG flows are constructed as domain-wall solutions of a gauged supergravity model in four dimensions that enjoys an embedding into massive IIA supergravity. A concrete RG flow that brings a mass deformation of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ CFT into the $\mathcal{N}=3$ CFT at low energies is described in detail.

Halving ISO(7) supergravity

Half-maximal, $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$, sectors of $\,D=4\,$ $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging are investigated. We focus on a half-maximal sector including three vector multiplets, that arises as a certain $\,\textrm{SO}(3)_{\textrm{R}}$-invariant sector of the full theory. We discuss the embedding of this sector into the largest half-maximal sector of the $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity retaining six vector multiplets. We also provide its canonical $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ formulation and show that, from this perspective, our model leads in its own right to a new explicit gauging of $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ supergravity. Finally, expressions for the restricted duality hierarchy are given and the vacuum structure is investigated. Five new non-supersymmetric AdS vacua are found numerically. The previously known $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ AdS vacua are also contained in our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model. Unlike when embedded in previously considered sectors with fewer fields, these vacua exhibit their full $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ supersymmetry within our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model.

S-folds and (non-)supersymmetric Janus solutions

The S-fold description of Janus-type solutions of type IIB supergravity is investigated. This is done by first studying a $\,\textrm{U}(1) \times \textrm{U}(1)\,$ invariant sector of the four-dimensional dyonically-gauged $\,{[\,\textrm{SO}(1,1) \times \textrm{SO}(6)\,] \ltimes \mathbb{R}^{12}}\,$ maximal supergravity that arises upon reduction of type IIB supergravity on $\,\mathbb{R} \, \times \, \textrm{S}^{5}\,$. Two AdS$_{4}$ solutions preserving $\,\textrm{SU}(3)\,$ and $\,\textrm{SO}(6)\,$ gauge symmetry together with $\,\mathcal{N}=1\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=0\,$ supersymmetry are found within this sector. Fetching techniques from the E$_{7(7)}$ exceptional field theory, these solutions are uplifted to ten-dimensional S-folds of type IIB Janus-type solutions of the form $\,\textrm{AdS}_{4} \times \mathbb{R} \times \textrm{M}_{5}\,$. The solutions presented here are natural candidates for the holographic duals of three-dimensional $\,\mathcal{N}=1\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=0\,$ interface super-Yang--Mills theories with $\,\textrm{SU}(3)\,$ and $\,\textrm{SU}(4)\,$ internal symmetry.

CSO$_c$ superpotentials

Motivated by their application to holographic RG flows and hairy black holes in Einstein-scalar systems, we present a collection of superpotentials driving the dynamics of $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ four-dimensional supergravities. These theories arise as consistent truncations of the electric/magnetic families of $\textrm{CSO}(p,q,r)_{c}$ maximal supergravities, with ${p+q+r=8}$, discovered by Dall'Agata et al. The $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ truncations describe $\textrm{SU}(3)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{2} \times \textrm{SO}(3)$ invariant sectors, respectively, and contain AdS$_4$ solutions preserving $\mathcal{N}=1,2,3,4$ supersymmetry within the full theories, as well as various gauge symmetries. Realisations in terms of non-geometric type IIB as well as geometric massive type IIA backgrounds are also discussed. The aim of this note is to provide easy to handle superpotentials that facilitate the study of gravitational and gauge aspects of the $\textrm{CSO}(p,q,r)_{c}$ maximal supergravities avoiding the technicalities required in their construction.

Dyonic ISO(7) supergravity and the duality hierarchy

Motivated by its well defined higher dimensional origin, a detailed study of $D=4$ $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity with a dyonically gauged $\textrm{ISO}(7) = \textrm{SO}(7) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^7$ gauge group is performed. We write down the Lagrangian and describe the tensor and duality hierarchies, focusing on an interesting subsector with closed field equations and supersymmetry transformations. We then truncate the $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory to some smaller sectors with $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and SU(3), $\textrm{G}_2$ and SO(4) bosonic symmetry. Canonical and superpotential formulations for these sectors are given, and their vacuum structure and spectra is analysed. Unlike the purely electric ISO(7) gauging, the dyonic gauging displays a rich structure of vacua, all of them AdS. We recover all previously known ones and find a new $\mathcal{N}=1$ vacuum with SU(3) symmetry and various non-supersymmetric vacua, all of them stable within the full $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory.

Romans-mass-driven flows on the D2-brane

The addition of supersymmetric Chern-Simons terms to ${\cal N}=8$ super-Yang-Mills theory in three-dimensions is expected to make the latter flow into infrared superconformal phases. We address this problem holographically by studying the effect of the Romans mass on the D2-brane near-horizon geometry. Working in a consistent, effective four-dimensional setting provided by $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity with a dyonic $\textrm{ISO(7)}$ gauging, we verify the existence of a rich web of supersymmetric domain walls triggered by the Romans mass that interpolate between the (four-dimensional description of the) D2-brane and various superconformal phases. We also construct domain walls for which both endpoints are superconformal. While most of our results are numerical, we provide analytic results for the $\textrm{SU}(3)\times \textrm{U}(1)$-invariant flow into an ${\cal N}=2$ conformal phase recently discovered.

Single-step de Sitter vacua from non-perturbative effects with matter

A scenario of moduli stabilisation based on the interplay between closed and open string sectors is explored in a bottom-up approach. We study N=1 effective supergravities inspired by type IIB orientifold constructions that include background fluxes and non-perturbative effects. The former generate the standard flux superpotential for the axiodilaton and complex structure moduli. The latter can be induced by gaugino condensation in a non-Abelian sector of D7-branes and involve the overall Kaehler modulus of the compactification as well as matter fields. We analyse the dynamics of this coupled system and show that it is compatible with single-step moduli stabilisation in a metastable de Sitter vacuum. A novelty of the scenario is that the F-term potential suffices to generate a positive cosmological constant and to stabilise all moduli, except for a flat direction that can be either lifted by a mass term or eaten up by an anomalous U(1).

The exceptional story of massive IIA supergravity

The framework of exceptional field theory is extended by introducing consistent deformations of its generalised Lie derivative. For the first time, massive type IIA supergravity is reproduced geometrically as a solution of the section constraint. This provides a unified description of all ten- and eleven-dimensional maximal supergravities. The action of the E7 deformed theory is constructed, and reduces to those of exceptional field theory and gauged maximal supergravity in respective limits. The relation of this new framework to other approaches for generating the Romans mass non-geometrically is discussed.

Consistent ${\cal N}=8$ truncation of massive IIA on $S^6$

Massive type IIA supergravity is shown to admit a consistent truncation on the six-sphere to maximal supergravity in four dimensions with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging. We obtain the complete, non-linear embedding of all the $D=4$ fields into the IIA metric and form potentials, and show its consistency. We first rewrite the IIA theory in an $\textrm{SO}(1,3) \times \textrm{SL}(7)$--covariant way. Then, we employ an ${\cal N}=8$ SL(7)--covariant restriction of the $D=4$ tensor hierarchy in order to find the full embedding. The redundant $D=4$ degrees of freedom introduced by the tensor hierarchy can be eliminated by writing the embedding in terms of the field strengths and exploiting the restricted duality hierarchy. In particular, closed expressions for the Freund-Rubin term are found using this technique which reveal a pattern valid for other truncations. Finally, we show that the present ${\cal N}=8$ truncation of massive IIA on $S^6$ and the ${\cal N}=2$ truncation obtained when $S^6$ is equipped with its nearly-Kähler structure, overlap in the ${\cal N}=1$, G$_2$--invariant sector of the former.

On new maximal supergravity and its BPS domain-walls

We revise the SU(3)-invariant sector of $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity with dyonic SO(8) gaugings. By using the embedding tensor formalism, analytic expressions for the scalar potential, superpotential(s) and fermion mass terms are obtained as a function of the electromagnetic phase $ω$ and the scalars in the theory. Equipped with these results, we explore non-supersymmetric AdS critical points at $ω\neq 0$ for which perturbative stability could not be analysed before. The $ω$-dependent superpotential is then used to derive first-order flow equations and obtain new BPS domain-wall solutions at $ω\neq 0$. We numerically look at steepest-descent paths motivated by the (conjectured) RG flows.

The string origin of dyonic ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity and its simple Chern-Simons duals

We clarify the higher-dimensional origin of a class of dyonic gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity recently discovered, when the gauge group is chosen to be ISO(7). This dyonically-gauged maximal supergravity arises from consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on $S^6$, and its magnetic coupling constant descends directly from the Romans mass. The critical points of the supergravity uplift to new AdS$_4$ massive type IIA vacua. We identify the corresponding CFT$_3$ duals as super-Chern-Simons-matter theories with simple gauge group SU$(N)$, with level $k$ given by the Romans mass. In particular, we find a critical point that uplifts to the first explicit ${\cal N}=2$ AdS$_4$ massive IIA background. We compute its free energy and that of the candidate dual Chern-Simons theory by localisation to a solvable matrix model, and find perfect agreement. This provides the first AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ precision match in massive type IIA string theory.

A second look at gauged supergravities from fluxes in M-theory

We investigate reductions of M-theory beyond twisted tori by allowing the presence of KK6 monopoles (KKO6-planes) compatible with N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The presence of KKO6-planes proves crucial to achieve full moduli stabilisation as they generate new universal moduli powers in the scalar potential. The resulting gauged supergravities turn out to be compatible with a weak G2 holonomy at N=1 as well as at some non-supersymmetric AdS4 vacua. The M-theory flux vacua we present here cannot be obtained from ordinary type IIA orientifold reductions including background fluxes, D6-branes (O6-planes) and/or KK5 (KKO5) sources. However, from a four-dimensional point of view, they still admit a description in terms of so-called non-geometric fluxes. In this sense we provide the M-theory interpretation for such non-geometric type IIA flux vacua.

Lobotomy of Flux Compactifications

We provide the dictionary between four-dimensional gauged supergravity and type II compactifications on $\mathbb{T}^6$ with metric and gauge fluxes in the absence of supersymmetry breaking sources, such as branes and orientifold planes. Secondly, we prove that there is a unique isotropic compactification allowing for critical points. It corresponds to a type IIA background given by a product of two 3-tori with SO(3) twists and results in a unique theory (gauging) with a non-semisimple gauge algebra. Besides the known four AdS solutions surviving the orientifold projection to $\mathcal{N}=4$ induced by O6-planes, this theory contains a novel AdS solution that requires non-trivial orientifold-odd fluxes, hence being a genuine critical point of the $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory.

Triality, Periodicity and Stability of SO(8) Gauged Supergravity

While electromagnetic duality is a symmetry of many supergravity theories, this is not the case for the N=8 gauged theory. It was recently shown that this rotation leads to a one-parameter family of SO(8) supergravities. It is an open question what the period of this parameter is. This issue is investigated in the SO(4) invariant sectors of the theory. We classify such critical points and find a novel branch of non-supersymmetric and unstable solutions, whose embedding is related via triality to the two known ones. Secondly, we show that the three branches of solutions lead to a Pi/4 periodicity of the vacuum structure. The general interrelations between triality and periodicity are discussed. Finally, we comment on the connection to other gauge groups as well as the possibility to achieve (non-)perturbative stability around AdS/Mkw/dS transitions.

All G_2 invariant critical points of maximal supergravity

We perform an exhaustive classification of G_2 invariant extrema of the most general gauged N=8 supergravity in four dimensions. They comprise four branches of Anti-de Sitter solutions labelled by a single parameter. Interestingly, while the gauge groups vary with the parameters, the mass spectra are invariant. One of these is a new non-supersymmetric yet stable point. Our analysis includes the recently proposed family of SO(8) gauged supergravities and more.

Exceptional Flux Compactifications

We consider type II (non-)geometric flux backgrounds in the absence of brane sources, and construct their explicit embedding into maximal gauged D=4 supergravity. This enables one to investigate the critical points, mass spectra and gauge groups of such backgrounds. We focus on a class of type IIA geometric vacua and find a novel, non-supersymmetric and stable AdS vacuum in maximal supergravity with a non-semisimple gauge group. Our construction relies on a non-trivial mapping between SL(2) x SO(6,6) fluxes, SU(8) mass spectra and gaugings of E7(7) subgroups.

Charting the landscape of N=4 flux compactifications

We analyse the vacuum structure of isotropic Z_2 x Z_2 flux compactifications, allowing for a single set of sources. Combining algebraic geometry with supergravity techniques, we are able to classify all vacua for both type IIA and IIB backgrounds with arbitrary gauge and geometric fluxes. Surprisingly, geometric IIA compactifications lead to a unique theory with four different vacua. In this case we also perform the general analysis allowing for sources compatible with minimal supersymmetry. Moreover, some relevant examples of type IIB non-geometric compactifications are studied. The computation of the full N=4 mass spectrum reveals the presence of a number of non-supersymmetric and nevertheless stable AdS_4 vacua. In addition we find a novel dS_4 solution based on a non-semisimple gauging.

How to halve maximal supergravity

We work out the truncation from maximal to half-maximal supergravity in four dimensions. In particular, we determine the explicit constraints on the embedding tensors of both theories. These tensors specify the complete theories, including gauge groups and scalar potentials. Firstly, we find the linear constraint on N=8 theories to allow for a truncation to N=4. Secondly, we determine the additional N=4 quadratic constraints following from N=8. Finally, we comment on a brane interpretation as tadpole conditions for the latter.

Vacua Analysis in Extended Supersymmetry Compactifications

We analyse geometric type IIA flux compactifications leading to N=4 gauged supergravities in four dimensions. The complete landscape of isotropic vacua is presented, which turns out to belong to a unique theory. The solutions admit an uplift to maximal supergravity due to the vanishing of the flux-induced tadpoles for all the supersymmetry-breaking branes. Such an uplift is sketched out and the full N=8 mass spectra are discussed. We find the interesting presence of a non-supersymmetric and nevertheless stable minimum.

Flux moduli stabilisation, Supergravity algebras and no-go theorems

We perform a complete classification of the flux-induced 12d algebras compatible with the set of N=1 type II orientifold models that are T-duality invariant, and allowed by the symmetries of the T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2) isotropic orbifold. The classification is performed in a type IIB frame, where only H_3 and Q fluxes are present. We then study no-go theorems, formulated in a type IIA frame, on the existence of Minkowski/de Sitter (Mkw/dS) vacua. By deriving a dictionary between the sources of potential energy for the three moduli (S, T and U) in types IIA and IIB, we are able to combine algebra results and no-go theorems. The outcome is a systematic procedure for identifying phenomenologically viable models where Mkw/dS vacua may exist. We present a complete table of the allowed algebras and the viability of their resulting scalar potential, and we point at the models which stand any chance of producing a fully stable vacuum.

preprint2009arXiv

Complete classification of Minkowski vacua in generalised flux models

We present a complete and systematic analysis of the Minkowski extrema of the N=1, D=4 Supergravity potential obtained from type II orientifold models that are T-duality invariant, in the presence of generalised fluxes. Based on our previous work on algebras spanned by fluxes, and the so-called no-go theorems on the existence of Minkowski and/or de Sitter vacua, we perform a partly analytic, partly numerical analysis of the promising cases previously hinted. We find that the models contain Minkowski extrema with one tachyonic direction. Moreover, those models defined by the Supergravity algebra so(3,1)^2 also contain Minkowski/de Sitter minima that are totally stable. All Minkowski solutions, stable or not, interpolate between points in parameter space where one or several of the moduli go to either zero or infinity, the so-called singular points. We finally reinterpret our results in the language of type IIA flux models, in order to show explicitly the contribution of the different sources of potential energy to the extrema found. In particular, the cases of totally stable Minkowski/de Sitter vacua require of the presence of non-geometric fluxes.
