Holographic approach to transport in dense QCD matter

The transport properties of dense QCD matter play a crucial role in the physics of neutron stars and their mergers, but are notoriously difficult to study with traditional quantum field theory tools. Specializing to the case of unpaired quark matter in beta equilibrium, we approach the problem through the machinery of holography, in particular the V-QCD and D3-D7 models, and derive results for the electrical and thermal conductivities and the shear and bulk viscosities. In addition we compare the bulk to shear viscosity ratio to the speed of sound and find that it violates the so-called Buchel bound. Our results differ dramatically from earlier predictions of perturbative QCD, the root causes and implications of which we analyze in detail.

Flowing to $\mathcal{N}=3$ Chern--Simons-matter theory

New renormalisation group flows of three-dimensional Chern--Simons theories with a single gauge group $\textrm{SU}(N)$ and adjoint matter are found holographically. These RG flows have an infrared fixed point given by a CFT with $\mathcal{N}=3$ supersymmetry and $\text{SU}(2)$ flavour symmetry. The ultraviolet fixed point is again described by a CFT with either $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\text{SU}(3)$ symmetry or $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\text{G}_{2}$ symmetry. The gauge/gravity duals of these RG flows are constructed as domain-wall solutions of a gauged supergravity model in four dimensions that enjoys an embedding into massive IIA supergravity. A concrete RG flow that brings a mass deformation of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ CFT into the $\mathcal{N}=3$ CFT at low energies is described in detail.

Transport in strongly coupled quark matter

Motivated by the possible presence of deconfined quark matter in neutron stars and their mergers and the important role of transport phenomena in these systems, we perform the first-ever systematic study of different viscosities and conductivities of dense quark matter using the gauge/gravity duality. Utilizing the V-QCD model, we arrive at results that are in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of perturbation theory, which highlights the differing transport properties of the system at weak and strong coupling and calls for caution in the use of the perturbative results in neutron-star applications.

Halving ISO(7) supergravity

Half-maximal, $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$, sectors of $\,D=4\,$ $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging are investigated. We focus on a half-maximal sector including three vector multiplets, that arises as a certain $\,\textrm{SO}(3)_{\textrm{R}}$-invariant sector of the full theory. We discuss the embedding of this sector into the largest half-maximal sector of the $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity retaining six vector multiplets. We also provide its canonical $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ formulation and show that, from this perspective, our model leads in its own right to a new explicit gauging of $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ supergravity. Finally, expressions for the restricted duality hierarchy are given and the vacuum structure is investigated. Five new non-supersymmetric AdS vacua are found numerically. The previously known $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ AdS vacua are also contained in our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model. Unlike when embedded in previously considered sectors with fewer fields, these vacua exhibit their full $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ supersymmetry within our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model.

Spectrum of a Supersymmetric Color Superconductor

We have recently shown that the ground state of ${\cal N} = 4$, SU($N_{\rm{\tiny c}}$) super Yang--Mills coupled to $N_{\rm{\tiny f}} \ll N_{\rm{\tiny c}}$ flavors, in the presence of non-zero isospin and R-symmetry charges, is a supersymmetric, superfluid, color superconductor. The holographic description consists of $N_{\rm{\tiny f}}$ D7-brane probes in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ with electric and instantonic fields on their worldvolume. These correspond to fundamental strings and D3-branes dissolved on the D7-branes, respectively. Here we use this description to determine the spectrum of mesonic excitations. As expected for a charged superfluid we find non-relativistic, massless Goldstone modes. We also find extra ungapped modes that are not associated to the breaking of any global symmetries but to the supersymmetric nature of the ground state. If the quark mass is much smaller than the scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking a pseudo-Goldstone boson is also present. We highlight some new features that appear only for $N_{\rm{\tiny f}}> 2$. We show that, in the generic case of unequal R-symmetry charges, the dissolved strings and D3-branes blow up into a D5-brane supertube stretched between the D7-branes.

Romans-mass-driven flows on the D2-brane

The addition of supersymmetric Chern-Simons terms to ${\cal N}=8$ super-Yang-Mills theory in three-dimensions is expected to make the latter flow into infrared superconformal phases. We address this problem holographically by studying the effect of the Romans mass on the D2-brane near-horizon geometry. Working in a consistent, effective four-dimensional setting provided by $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity with a dyonic $\textrm{ISO(7)}$ gauging, we verify the existence of a rich web of supersymmetric domain walls triggered by the Romans mass that interpolate between the (four-dimensional description of the) D2-brane and various superconformal phases. We also construct domain walls for which both endpoints are superconformal. While most of our results are numerical, we provide analytic results for the $\textrm{SU}(3)\times \textrm{U}(1)$-invariant flow into an ${\cal N}=2$ conformal phase recently discovered.

Unquenched flavor on the Higgs branch

We construct the gravity duals of the Higgs branches of three-dimensional (four-dimensional) super Yang-Mills theories coupled to $N_\textrm{f}$ quark flavors. The effect of the quarks on the color degrees of freedom is included, and corresponds on the gravity side to the backreaction of $N_\textrm{f}$ flavor D6-branes (D7-branes) on the background of $N_\textrm{c}$ color D2-branes (D3-branes). The Higgsing of the gauge group arises from the dissolution of some color branes inside the flavor branes. The dissolved color branes are represented by non-Abelian instantons whose backreaction is also included. The result is a cascading-like solution in which the effective number of color branes varies along the holographic direction. In the three-dimensional case the solution may include an arbitrary number of quasi-conformal (walking) regions.

Bifundamental Superfluids from Holography

We study the holographic dual of a (2+1)-dimensional s-wave superfluid that breaks an abelian U(1) x U(1) global symmetry group to the diagonal U(1)_V. The model is inspired by Sen's tachyonic action, and the operator that condenses transforms in the bifundamental representation of the symmetry group. We focus on two configurations: the first one describes a marginal operator, and the phase diagram at finite temperature contains a first or a second order phase transition, depending on the parameters that determine the theory. In the second model the operator is relevant and the finite temperature transitions are always second order. In the latter case the conductivity for the current associated to the broken symmetry shows quasiparticle excitations at low temperatures, with mass given by the width of the superconducting gap. The suppression of spectral weight at low frequencies is also observed in the conductivity associated to the conserved symmetry, for which the DC value decreases as the temperature is reduced.

Electric/magnetic duality and RG flows in AdS4/CFT3

A large set of relevant deformations of the ABJM field theory on a stack of M2 branes is captured holographically by D=4 N=8 SO(8)-gauged supergravity, which has accordingly been applied to study renormalisation group (RG) flows of the field theory between distinct superconformal phases. Recently, it has been discovered that this supergravity is not unique, and that a one-parameter family of gaugings of maximal supergravity exists. The parameter is an angle that measures the mixture of electric and magnetic vectors that gauge SO(8) dyonically. We construct and comprehensively characterise all domain walls between the critical points of the new supergravities with at least SU(3) invariance, which are expected to be dual to RG flows of new field theories defined at least at large N. We also construct some walls running off to infinity in scalar space, which we expect to be dual to Coulomb branch flows of these field theories.

Three-dimensional super Yang-Mills with unquenched flavor

We construct analytically the gravity duals of three-dimensional, super Yang-Mills-type theories with $\mathcal N=1$ supersymmetry coupled to $N_f$ quark flavors. The backreaction of the quarks on the color degrees of freedom is included, and corresponds on the gravity side to the backreaction of $N_f$ D6-branes on the background of $N$ D2-branes. The D6-branes are smeared over the compact part of the geometry, which must be a six-dimensional nearly Kähler manifold in order to preserve supersymmetry. For massless quarks, the solutions flow in the IR to an $AdS_4$ fixed point dual to a Chern-Simons-matter theory. For light quarks the theories exhibit quasi-conformal dynamics (walking) at energy scales $m_q \ll E \ll λN_f / N$, with $λ= g_{\text{YM}}^2 N$ the 't Hooft coupling.

(Super)Yang-Mills at Finite Heavy-Quark Density

We study the gravitational duals of $d$-dimensional Yang-Mills theories with $d\leq 6$ in the presence of an ${\cal O} (N^2)$ density of heavy quarks, with $N$ the number of colors. For concreteness we focus on maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills, but our results apply to a larger class of theories with or without supersymmetry. The gravitational solutions describe renormalization group flows towards infrared scaling geometries characterized by fixed dynamical and hyperscaling-violating exponents. The special case $d=5$ yields an $AdS_3 \times \mathbb{R}^4 \times S^4$ geometry upon uplifting to M-theory. We discuss the multitude of physical scales that separate different dynamical regimes along the flows, as well as the validity of the supergravity description. We also present exact black brane solutions that encode the low-temperature thermodynamics.

Horizon universality and anomalous conductivities

We show that the value of chiral conductivities associated with anomalous transport is universal in a general class of strongly coupled quantum field theories. Our result applies to theories with no dynamical gluon fields and admitting a gravitational holographic dual in the large N limit. On the gravity side the result follows from near horizon universality of the fluctuation equations, similar to the holographic calculation of the shear viscosity.

Charged D3-D7 plasmas: novel solutions, extremality and stability issues

We study finite temperature N=4 Super Yang-Mills (and more general gauge theories realized on intersecting D3-D7 branes) in the presence of dynamical massless fundamental matter fields at finite baryon charge density. We construct the holographic dual charged black hole solutions at first order in the flavor backreaction but exact in the charge density. The thermodynamical properties of the dual gauge theories coincide with the ones found in the usual charged D7-probe limit and the system turns out to be thermodynamically stable. By analyzing the higher order correction in the flavor backreaction, we provide a novel argument for the un-reliability of the charged probe approximation (and the present solution) in the extremality limit, i.e. at zero temperature. We then consider scalar mesonic-like bound states, whose spectrum is dual to that of linearized fluctuations of D7-brane worldvolume fields around our gravity backgrounds. In particular we focus on a scalar field saturating the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound in the flavorless limit, and coupled to fields dual to irrelevant operators. By looking at quasinormal modes of this scalar, we find no signals of instabilities in the regime of validity of the solutions.

Transport properties of spacetime-filling branes

A model consisting of (d+1)-dimensional gravity coupled to spacetime filling charged branes is used to study the effects of backreaction. The charged black holes arising from this simple model reflect the non-linearity of the gauge field and are thermodynamically stable. By analysing fluctuations of the system we corroborate that at low values of the temperature (or large chemical potential) backreaction effects from the branes are dominant. We also provide a generalisation of the Iqbal and Liu strategy to calculate the DC conductivity, in which a mass term for the gauge field fluctuation is included. This mass term gives the value of the residue of the pole at zero frequency in the imaginary part of the AC conductivity, as well as the running of the DC conductivity with the bulk radius.

Asymptotically Lifshitz Black Holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton Theories

We study Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories with a cosmological constant and U(1)^N gauge symmetry, considering metrics asymptotically approaching the Lifshiftz metric. We study the dependence of the phase diagram on the value of the dynamical exponent. Along the way, we apply holographic renormalization and propose a counterterm valid for arbitrary dimension and dynamical exponent in our setup.

Consistent reduction of charged D3-D7 systems

We provide a consistent reduction to five dimensions of the system of D3-branes at Calabi-Yau singularities coupled to D7-branes with world-volume gauge flux. The D3-branes source the dual to would-be conformal quiver theories. The D7-branes, which are homogeneously distributed in their transverse directions, are dual to massless matter in the fundamental representation at finite (baryon) density. We provide the five-dimensional action and equations of motion, and discuss a few sub-truncations. The reduction can be used in the study of transport properties and stability of D3-D7 charged systems.

D3/D7 Quark-Gluon Plasma with Magnetically Induced Anisotropy

We study the effects of the temperature and of a magnetic field in the setup of an intersection of D3/D7 branes, where a large number of D7 branes is smeared in the transverse directions to allow for a perturbative solution in a backreaction parameter. The magnetic field sources an anisotropy in the plasma, and we investigate its physical consequences for the thermodynamics and energy loss of particles probing the system. In particular we comment on the stress-energy tensor of the plasma, the propagation of sound in the directions parallel and orthogonal to the magnetic field, the drag force of a quark moving through the medium and jet quenching.

Black holes and black branes in Lifshitz spacetimes

We construct analytic solutions describing black holes and black branes in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes with arbitrary dynamical exponent z and for arbitrary number of dimensions. The model considered consists of Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant, a scalar, and N U(1) gauge fields with dilatonic-like couplings. We study the phase diagrams and thermodynamic instabilities of the solution, and find qualitative differences between the cases with 1<= z<2, z=2 and z>2.

D3-D7 Quark-Gluon Plasmas at Finite Baryon Density

We present the string dual to SU(Nc) N=4 SYM, coupled to Nf massless fundamental flavors, at finite temperature and baryon density. The solution is determined by two dimensionless parameters, both depending on the 't Hooft coupling $λ_h$ at the scale set by the temperature T: $ε_h\simλ_h Nf/Nc$, weighting the backreaction of the flavor fields and $\tildeδ\simλ_h^{-1/2}nb/(Nf T^3)$, where $nb$ is the baryon density. For small values of these two parameters the solution is given analytically up to second order. We study the thermodynamics of the system in the canonical and grand-canonical ensembles. We then analyze the energy loss of partons moving through the plasma, computing the jet quenching parameter and studying its dependence on the baryon density. Finally, we analyze certain "optical" properties of the plasma. The whole setup is generalized to non abelian strongly coupled plasmas engineered on D3-D7 systems with D3-branes placed at the tip of a generic singular Calabi-Yau cone. In all the cases, fundamental matter fields are introduced by means of homogeneously smeared D7-branes and the flavor symmetry group is thus a product of abelian factors.

Holographic Duals of Quark Gluon Plasmas with Unquenched Flavors

We review the construction of gravitational solutions holographically dual to N=1 quiver gauge theories with dynamical flavor multiplets. We focus on the D3-D7 construction and consider the finite temperature, finite quark chemical potential case where there is a charged black hole in the dual solution. Discussed physical outputs of the model include its thermodynamics (with susceptibilities) and general hydrodynamic properties.

Holographic Flavored Quark-Gluon Plasmas

Holography provides a novel method to study the physics of Quark Gluon Plasmas, complementary to the ordinary field theory and lattice approaches. In this context, we analyze the informations that can be obtained for strongly coupled Plasmas containing dynamical flavors, also in the presence of a finite baryon chemical potential. In particular, we discuss the jet quenching and the hydrodynamic transport coefficients.

The open string membrane paradigm with external electromagnetic fields

We study the effective geometry felt by the fluctuations of open strings living on the worldvolume of probe D-branes in the presence of background electromagnetic fields. This is captured by an effective action consisting of a Maxwell term and a topological term, with the role of the metric played by the open string metric. Studying generalized Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates for stationary but non-static manifolds, we consider an open string membrane paradigm to obtain a generic formula for the DC transport coefficients, including the effect of external electromagnetic fields present on the worldvolume of the probe branes. We show that the previously studied singular shell, present when a critical electric field strength is turned on, behaves as a horizon for the open string degrees of freedom. The results of this analysis can be used to define a membrane paradigm for a very general class of spacetimes with non-diagonal metrics.

A note on the velocity of holographic long-lived mesons

We study fluctuations of a U(1) gauge field on the worldvolume of Nf probe D7-branes in the background of Nc black D3-branes with a finite baryon density. The choice of mode corresponds to vector mesons in the dual gauge theory whose mass and lifetime can be determined by a study of the quasinormal modes. The speed of propagation of these holographic mesons at large momenta is studied from the dispersion relations of the quasinormal modes of the system.

Holographic Operator Mixing and Quasinormal Modes on the Brane

We provide a framework for calculating holographic Green's functions from general bilinear actions and fields obeying coupled differential equations in the bulk. The matrix-valued spectral function is shown to be independent of the radial bulk coordinate. Applying this framework we improve the analysis of fluctuations in the D3/D7 system at finite baryon density, where the longitudinal perturbations of the world-volume gauge field couple to the scalar fluctuations of the brane embedding. We compute the spectral function and show how its properties are related to the quasinormal mode spectrum. We study the crossover from the hydrodynamic diffusive to the reactive regime and the movement of quasinormal modes as functions of temperature and density. We also compute their dispersion relations and find that they asymptote to the lightcone for large momenta.

Hydrodynamics of fundamental matter

First and second order transport coefficients are calculated for the strongly coupled N=4 SYM plasma coupled to massless fundamental matter in the Veneziano limit. The results, including among others the value of the bulk viscosity and some relaxation times, are presented at next-to-leading order in the flavor contribution. The bulk viscosity is found to saturate Buchel's bound. This result is also captured by an effective single-scalar five-dimensional holographic dual in the Chamblin-Reall class and it is suggested to hold, in the limit of small deformations, for generic plasmas with gravity duals, whenever the leading conformality breaking effects are driven by marginally (ir)relevant operators. This proposal is then extended to other relations for hydrodynamic coefficients, which are conjectured to be universal for every non-conformal plasma with a dual Chamblin-Reall-like description. Our analysis extends to any strongly coupled gauge theory describing the low energy dynamics of Nc>>1 D3-branes at the tip of a generic Calabi-Yau cone. The fundamental fields are added by means of 1<<Nf<<Nc homogeneously smeared D7-branes.

Hydrodynamics from the Dp-brane

We complete the computation of viscous transport coefficients in the near horizon geometries that arise from a stack of black Dp-branes for p=2,...,6 in the decoupling limit. The main new result is the obtention of the bulk viscosity which, for all p, is found to be related to the speed of sound by the simple relation ζ/η= -2(v_s^2-1/p). For completeness the shear viscosity is rederived from gravitational perturbations in the shear and scalar channels. We comment on technical issues like the counterterms needed, or the possible dependence on the conformal frame.
