Classifications and constructions of minimum size linear sets

This paper aims to study linear sets of minimum size in the projective line, that is Fq\mathbb{F}_q-linear sets of rank kk in PG(1,qn)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n) admitting one point of weight one and having size qk−1+1q^{k-1}+1. Examples of these linear sets have been found by Lunardon and the second author (2000) and, more recently, by Jena and Van de Voorde (2021). However, classification results for minimum size linear sets are known only for k≤5k\leq 5. In this paper we provide classification results for those LUL_U admitting two points with complementary weights. We construct new examples and also study the related ΓL(2,qn)\mathrm{ΓL}(2,q^n)-equivalence issue. These results solve an open problem posed by Jena and Van de Voorde. The main tool relies on two results by Bachoc, Serra and Zémor (2017 and 2018) on the linear analogues of Kneser's and Vosper's theorems. We then conclude the paper pointing out a connection between critical pairs and linear sets, obtaining also some classification results for critical pairs.

Encoding and Decoding of Several Optimal Rank Metric Codes

This paper presents encoding and decoding algorithms for several families of optimal rank metric codes whose codes are in restricted forms of symmetric, alternating and Hermitian matrices. First, we show the evaluation encoding is the right choice for these codes and then we provide easily reversible encoding methods for each family. Later unique decoding algorithms for the codes are described. The decoding algorithms are interpolation-based and can uniquely correct errors for each code with rank up to ⌊(d−1)/2⌋\lfloor(d-1)/2\rfloor in polynomial-time, where dd is the minimum distance of the code.

Non-minimum tensor rank Gabidulin codes

The tensor rank of some Gabidulin codes of small dimension is investigated. In particular, we determine the tensor rank of any rank metric code equivalent to an 88-dimensional Fq\mathbb{F}_q-linear generalized Gabidulin code in Fq4×4\mathbb{F}_{q}^{4\times4}. This shows that such a code is never minimum tensor rank. In this way, we detect the first infinite family of Gabidulin codes which are not minimum tensor rank.

Rank-Metric Codes, Semifields, and the Average Critical Problem

We investigate two fundamental questions intersecting coding theory and combinatorial geometry, with emphasis on their connections. These are the problem of computing the asymptotic density of MRD codes in the rank metric, and the Critical Problem for combinatorial geometries by Crapo and Rota. Using methods from semifield theory, we derive two lower bounds for the density function of full-rank, square MRD codes. The first bound is sharp when the matrix size is a prime number and the underlying field is sufficiently large, while the second bound applies to the binary field. We then take a new look at the Critical Problem for combinatorial geometries, approaching it from a qualitative, often asymptotic, viewpoint. We illustrate the connection between this very classical problem and that of computing the asymptotic density of MRD codes. Finally, we study the asymptotic density of some special families of codes in the rank metric, including the symmetric, alternating and Hermitian ones. In particular, we show that the optimal codes in these three contexts are sparse.

rr-fat linearized polynomials over finite fields

In this paper we prove that the property of being scattered for a Fq\mathbb{F}_q-linearized polynomial of small qq-degree over a finite field Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} is unstable, in the sense that, whenever the corresponding linear set has at least one point of weight larger than one, the polynomial is far from being scattered. To this aim, we define and investigate rr-fat polynomials, a natural generalization of scattered polynomials. An rr-fat Fq\mathbb{F}_q-linearized polynomial defines a linear set of rank nn in the projective line of order qnq^n with rr points of weight larger than one. When rr equals 11, the corresponding linear sets are called clubs, and they are related with a number of remarkable mathematical objects like KM-arcs, group divisible designs and rank metric codes. Using techniques on algebraic curves and global function fields, we obtain numerical bounds for rr and the non-existence of exceptional rr-fat polynomials with r>0r>0. In the case n≤4n\leq 4, we completely determine the spectrum of values of rr for which an rr-fat polynomial exists. In the case n=5n=5, we provide a new family of 11-fat polynomials. Furthermore, we determine the values of rr for which the so-called LP-polynomials are rr-fat.

A new family of maximum scattered linear sets in PG(1,q6)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)

We generalize the example of linear set presented by the last two authors in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of PG(1,qn)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)" (2019) to a more general family, proving that such linear sets are maximum scattered when qq is odd and, apart from a special case, they are are new. This solves an open problem posed in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of PG(1,qn)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)" (2019). As a consequence of Sheekey's results in "A new family of linear maximum rank distance codes" (2016), this family yields to new MRD-codes with parameters (6,6,q;5)(6,6,q;5).

Codes with few weights arising from linear sets

In this article we present a class of codes with few weights arising from special type of linear sets. We explicitly show the weights of such codes, their weight enumerator and possible choices for their generator matrices. In particular, our construction yields also to linear codes with three weights and, in some cases, to almost MDS codes. The interest for these codes relies on their applications to authentication codes and secret schemes, and their connections with further objects such as association schemes and graphs.

Connections between scattered linear sets and MRD-codes

The aim of this paper is to survey on the known results on maximum scattered linear sets and MRD-codes. In particular, we investigate the link between these two areas. In "A new family of linear maximum rank distance codes" (2016) Sheekey showed how maximum scattered linear sets of PG(1,qn)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n) define square MRD-codes. Later in "Maximum scattered linear sets and MRD-codes" (2017) maximum scattered linear sets in PG(r−1,qn)\mathrm{PG}(r-1,q^n), r>2r>2, were used to construct non square MRD-codes. Here, we point out a new relation regarding the other direction. We also provide an alternative proof of the well-known Blokhuis-Lavrauw's bound for the rank of maximum scattered linear sets shown in "Scattered spaces with respect to a spread in PG(n,q)\mathrm{PG}(n,q)" (2000).

Linear sets from projection of Desarguesian spreads

Every linear set in a Galois space is the projection of a subgeometry, and most known characterizations of linear sets are given under this point of view. For instance, scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type are obtained by considering a Desarguesian spread of a subgeometry and projecting from a vertex which is spanned by all but two director spaces. In this paper we introduce the concept of linear sets of hh-pseudoregulus type, which turns out to be projected from the span of an arbitrary number of director spaces of a Desarguesian spread of a subgeometry. Among these linear sets, we characterize those which are hh-scattered and solve the equivalence problem between them; a key role is played by an algebraic tool recently introduced in the literature and known as Moore exponent set. As a byproduct, we classify asymptotically hh-scattered linear sets of hh-pseudoregulus type.

On certain linearized polynomials with high degree and kernel of small dimension

Let ff be the Fq\mathbb{F}_q-linear map over Fq2n\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}} defined by x↦x+axqs+bxqn+sx\mapsto x+ax^{q^s}+bx^{q^{n+s}} with gcd⁡(n,s)=1\gcd(n,s)=1. It is known that the kernel of ff has dimension at most 22, as proved by Csajbók et al. in "A new family of MRD-codes" (2018). For nn big enough, e.g. n≥5n\geq5 when s=1s=1, we classify the values of b/ab/a such that the kernel of ff has dimension at most 11. To this aim, we translate the problem into the study of some algebraic curves of small degree with respect to the degree of ff; this allows to use intersection theory and function field theory together with the Hasse-Weil bound. Our result implies a non-scatteredness result for certain high degree scattered binomials, and the asymptotic classification of a family of rank metric codes.

On maximum additive Hermitian rank-metric codes

Inspired by the work of Zhou "On equivalence of maximum additive symmetric rank-distance codes" (2020) based on the paper of Schmidt "Symmetric bilinear forms over finite fields with applications to coding theory" (2015), we investigate the equivalence issue of maximum dd-codes of Hermitian matrices. More precisely, in the space Hn(q2)\mathrm{H}_n(q^2) of Hermitian matrices over Fq2\mathbb{F}_{q^2} we have two possible equivalence: the classical one coming from the maps that preserve the rank in Fq2n×n\mathbb{F}_{q^2}^{n\times n}, and the one that comes from restricting to those maps preserving both the rank and the space Hn(q2)\mathrm{H}_n(q^2). We prove that when d<nd<n and the codes considered are maximum additive dd-codes and (n−d)(n-d)-designs, these two equivalence relations coincide. As a consequence, we get that the idealisers of such codes are not distinguishers, unlike what usually happens for rank metric codes. Finally, we deal with the combinatorial properties of known maximum Hermitian codes and, by means of this investigation, we present a new family of maximum Hermitian 22-code, extending the construction presented by Longobardi et al. in "Automorphism groups and new constructions of maximum additive rank metric codes with restrictions" (2020).

On the intersection problem for linear sets in the projective line

The aim of this paper is to investigate the intersection problem between two linear sets in the projective line over a finite field. In particular, we analyze the intersection between two clubs with eventually different maximum fields of linearity. Also, we analyze the intersection between the linear set defined by the polynomial αxqk+βxαx^{q^k}+βx and other linear sets having the same rank; this family contains the linear set of pseudoregulus type defined by xqx^q. The strategy relies on the study of certain algebraic curves whose rational points describe the intersection of the two linear sets. Among other geometric and algebraic tools, function field theory and the Hasse-Weil bound play a crucial role. As an application, we give asymptotic results on semifields of BEL-rank two.

On the list decodability of Rank Metric codes

Let k,n,m∈Z+k,n,m \in \mathbb{Z}^+ integers such that k≤n≤mk\leq n \leq m, let Gn,k∈Fqmn\mathrm{G}_{n,k}\in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n be a Delsarte-Gabidulin code. Wachter-Zeh proven that codes belonging to this family cannot be efficiently list decoded for any radius ττ, providing ττ is large enough. This achievement essentially relies on proving a lower bound for the list size of some specific words in Fqmn∖Gn,k\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n \setminus \mathrm{G}_{n,k}. In 2016, Raviv and Wachter-Zeh improved this bound in a special case, i.e. when n∣mn\mid m. As a consequence, they were able to detect infinite families of Delsarte-Gabidulin codes that cannot be efficiently list decoded at all. In this article we determine similar lower bounds for Maximum Rank Distance codes belonging to a wider class of examples, containing Generalized Gabidulin codes, Generalized Twisted Gabidulin codes, and examples recently described by the first author and Yue Zhou. By exploiting arguments suchlike those used in the above mentioned papers, when n∣mn\mid m, we also show infinite families of generalized Gabidulin codes that cannot be list decoded efficiently at any radius greater than or equal to ⌊d−12⌋+1\left\lfloor \frac{d-1}2 \right\rfloor+1, where dd is its minimum distance. Nonetheless, in all other examples belonging to above mentioned class, we detect infinite families that cannot be list decoded efficiently at any radius greater than or equal to ⌊d−12⌋+2\left\lfloor \frac{d-1}2 \right\rfloor+2, where dd is its minimum distance. Finally, relying on the properties of a set of subspace trinomials recently presented by McGuire and Mueller, we are able to prove that any rank metric code of Fqmn\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n of order qknq^{kn} with nn dividing mm, such that 4n−34n-3 is a square in Z\mathbb{Z} and containing Gn,2\mathrm{G}_{n,2}, is not efficiently list decodable at some values of the radius ττ.

On the number of roots of some linearized polynomials

Linearized polynomials appear in many different contexts, such as rank metric codes, cryptography and linear sets, and the main issue regards the characterization of the number of roots from their coefficients. Results of this type have been already proved in [7,10,24]. In this paper we provide bounds and characterizations on the number of roots of linearized polynomials of this form ax+b0xσ+b1xσqn+b2xσq2n+…+bt−1xσqn(t−1)∈Fqnt[x], ax+b_0x^σ+b_1x^{σq^n}+b_2x^{σq^{2n}}+\ldots+b_{t-1}x^{σq^{n(t-1)}} \in \mathbb{F}_{q^{nt}}[x], with σσ a generator of the Galois group Gal(Fqn ⁣:Fq)\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}\colon\mathbb{F}_q). Also, we characterize the number of roots of such polynomials directly from their coefficients, dealing with matrices which are much smaller than the relative Dickson matrices and the companion matrices used in the previous papers. Furthermore, we develop a method to find explicitly the roots of a such polynomial by finding the roots of a qnq^n-polynomial. Finally, as an applications of the above results, we present a family of linear sets of the projective line whose points have a small spectrum of possible weights, containing most of the known families of scattered linear sets. In particular, we carefully study the linear sets in PG(1,q6)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6) presented in [9].

Scattered subspaces and related codes

After a seminal paper by Shekeey (2016), a connection between maximum hh-scattered Fq\mathbb{F}_q-subspaces of V(r,qn)V(r,q^n) and maximum rank distance (MRD) codes has been established in the extremal cases h=1h=1 and h=r−1h=r-1. In this paper, we propose a connection for any h∈{1,…,r−1}h\in\{1,\ldots,r-1\}, extending and unifying all the previously known ones. As a consequence, we obtain examples of non-square MRD codes which are not equivalent to generalized Gabidulin or twisted Gabidulin codes. Up to equivalence, we classify MRD codes having the same parameters as the ones in our connection. Also, we determine the weight distribution of codes related to the geometric counterpart of maximum hh-scattered subspaces.

A characterization of linearized polynomials with maximum kernel

We provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the coefficients of a qq-polynomial ff over Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} which ensure that the number of distinct roots of ff in Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} equals the degree of ff. We say that these polynomials have maximum kernel. As an application we study in detail qq-polynomials of degree qn−2q^{n-2} over Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} which have maximum kernel and for n≤6n\leq 6 we list all qq-polynomials with maximum kernel. We also obtain information on the splitting field of an arbitrary qq-polynomial. Analogous results are proved for qsq^s-polynomials as well, where gcd⁡(s,n)=1\gcd(s,n)=1.
