Fredholm theory of families of discrete dynamical systems and its applications to bifurcation theory

In a previous work, we proved an index theorem for families of asymptotically hyperbolic discrete dynamical systems and obtained applications to bifurcation theory. A weaker and far more common assumption than asymptotic hyperbolicity is the existence of an exponential dichotomy. In this paper we generalize all our previous results to the latter setting, which requires substantial modifications of our arguments. In addition, we generalize previous results on continuity and differentiability of Nemitski operators for discrete dynamical systems to obtain even better bifurcation results.

Parity flow as ${\mathbb Z}_2$-valued spectral flow

This note is about the topology of the path space of linear Fredholm operators on a real Hilbert space. Fitzpatrick and Pejsachowicz introduced the parity of such a path, based on the Leray-Schauder degree of a path of parametrices. Here an alternative analytic approach is presented which reduces the parity to the ${\mathbb Z}_2$-valued spectral flow of an associated path of chiral skew-adjoints. Furthermore the related notion of ${\mathbb Z}_2$-index of a Fredholm pair of chiral complex structures is introduced and connected to the parity of a suitable path. Several non-trivial examples are provided. One of them concerns topological insulators, another an application to the bifurcation of a non-linear partial differential equation.

The Index Bundle and Multiparameter Bifurcation for Discrete Dynamical Systems

We develop a $K$-theoretic approach to multiparameter bifurcation theory of homoclinic solutions of discrete non-autonomous dynamical systems from a branch of stationary solutions. As a byproduct we obtain a family index theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic linear dynamical systems which is of independent interest. In the special case of a single parameter, our bifurcation theorem weakens the assumptions in previous work by Pejsachowicz and the first author.

A family index theorem for periodic Hamiltonian systems and bifurcation

We prove an index theorem for families of linear periodic Hamiltonian systems, which is reminiscent of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for selfadjoint elliptic operators. For the special case of one-parameter families, we compare our theorem with a classical result of Salamon and Zehnder. Finally, we use the index theorem to study bifurcation of branches of periodic solutions for families of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems.

A Morse-Smale index theorem for indefinite elliptic systems and bifurcation

We generalise the semi-Riemannian Morse index theorem to elliptic systems of partial differential equations on star-shaped domains. Moreover, we apply our theorem to bifurcation from a branch of trivial solutions of semilinear systems, where the bifurcation parameter is introduced by shrinking the domain to a point. This extends recent results of the authors for scalar equations.

Spectral flow and bifurcation for a class of strongly indefinite elliptic systems

We consider bifurcation of solutions from a given trivial branch for a class of strongly indefinite elliptic systems via the spectral flow. Our main results establish bifurcation invariants that can be obtained from the coefficients of the systems without using explicit solutions of their linearisations at the given branch. Our constructions are based on a comparison principle for the spectral flow and a generalisation of a bifurcation theorem due to Szulkin.

Bifurcation results for critical points of families of functionals

Recently the first author studied the bifurcation of critical points of families of functionals on a Hilbert space, which are parametrised by a compact and orientable manifold having a non-vanishing first integral cohomology group. We improve this result in two directions: topologically and analytically. From the analytical point of view we generalise it to a broader class of functionals; from the topological point of view we allow the parameter space to be a metrisable Banach manifold. Our methods are in particular powerful if the parameter space is simply connected. As an application of our results we consider families of geodesics in (semi-) Riemannian manifolds.
