A Green's function for the source-free Maxwell equations on $AdS^5 \times \mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^3$

We compute a Green's function giving rise to the solution of the Cauchy problem for the source-free Maxwell's equations on a causal domain $\mathcal{D}$ contained in a geodesically normal domain of the Lorentzian manifold $AdS^5 \times \mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^3$, where $AdS^5$ denotes the simply connected $5$-dimensional anti-de-Sitter space-time. Our approach is to formulate the original Cauchy problem as an equivalent Cauchy problem for the Hodge Laplacian on $\mathcal{D}$ and to seek a solution in the form of a Fourier expansion in terms of the eigenforms of the Hodge Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^3$. This gives rise to a sequence of inhomogeneous Cauchy problems governing the form-valued Fourier coefficients corresponding to the Fourier modes and involving operators related to the Hodge Laplacian on $AdS^5 \times \mathbb{S}^2$, which we solve explicitly by using Riesz distributions and the method of spherical means for differential forms. Finally we put together into the Fourier expansion on $\mathbb{S}^3$ the modes obtained by this procedure, producing a $2$-form on $\mathcal{D}\subset AdS^5 \times \mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^3$ which we show to be a solution of the original Cauchy problem for Maxwell's equations.

Determining an asymptotically AdS spacetime from data on its conformal boundary

An outstanding question lying at the core of the AdS/CFT correspondence in string theory is the holographic prescription problem for Einstein metrics, which asserts that one can slightly perturb the conformal geometry at infinity of the anti-de Sitter space and still obtain an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime that satisfies the Einstein equations with a negative cosmological constant. The purpose of this paper is to address this question by providing a precise quantitative statement of the real-time holographic principle for Einstein spacetimes, to outline its proof and to discuss its physical implications.

Gaussian measures on the of space of Riemannian metrics

We introduce Gaussian-type measures on the manifold of all metrics with a fixed volume form on a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $\geq 3$. For this random model we compute the characteristic function for the $L^2$ (Ebin) distance to the reference metric. In the Appendix, we study Lipschitz-type distance between Riemannian metrics and give applications to the diameter, eigenvalue and volume entropy functionals.

Local Isometric immersions of pseudo-spherical surfaces and evolution equations

The class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces, first introduced by Chern and Tenenblat [3], is characterized by the property that to each solution of a differential equation, within the class, there corresponds a 2-dimensional Riemannian metric of curvature equal to $-1$. The class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces carries close ties to the property of complete integrability, as manifested by the existence of infinite hierarchies of conservation laws and associated linear problems. As such, it contains many important known examples of integrable equations, like the sine-Gordon, Liouville and KdV equations. It also gives rise to many new families of integrable equations. The question we address in this paper concerns the local isometric immersion of pseudo-spherical surfaces in ${\bf E}^{3}$ from the perspective of the differential equations that give rise to the metrics. Indeed, a classical theorem in the differential geometry of surfaces states that any pseudo-spherical surface can be locally isometrically immersed in ${\bf E}^{3}$. In the case of the sine-Gordon equation, one can derive an expression for the second fundamental form of the immersion that depends only on a jet of finite order of the solution of the pde. A natural question is to know if this remarkable property extends to equations other than the sine-Gordon equation within the class of differential equations describing pseudo-spherical surfaces. In an earlier paper [11], we have shown that this property fails to hold for all other second order equations, except for those belonging to a very special class of evolution equations. In the present paper, we consider a class of evolution equations for $u(x,t)$ of order $k\geq 3$ describing pseudo-spherical surfaces. We show that whenever an isometric immersion in ${\bf E}^3$ exists, depending on a jet of finite order of $u$, then the coefficients of the second fundamental forms are functions of the independent variables $x$ and $t$ only.

Non-uniqueness results for the anisotropic Calderon problem with data measured on disjoint sets

In this paper, we give some simple counterexamples to uniqueness for the Calderon problem on Riemannian manifolds with boundary when the Dirichlet and Neumann data are measured on disjoint sets of the boundary. We provide counterexamples in the case of two and three dimensional Riemannian manifolds with boundary having the topology of circular cylinders in dimension two and toric cylinders in dimension three. The construction could be easily extended to higher dimensional Riemannian manifolds.

Second-order equations and local isometric immersions of pseudo-spherical surfaces

We consider the class of differential equations that describe pseudo-spherical surfaces of the form $u\_t=F(u,u\_x,u\_{xx})$ and $u\_{xt}=F(u, u\_x)$ given in Chern-Tenenblat \cite{ChernTenenblat} and Rabelo-Tenenblat \cite{RabeloTenenblat90}. We answer the following question: Given a pseudo-spherical surface determined by a solution $u$ of such an equation, do the coefficients of the second fundamental form of the local isometric immersion in $\mathbb{R}^3$ depend on a jet of finite order of $u$? We show that, except for the sine-Gordon equation, where the coefficients depend on a jet of order zero, for all other differential equations, whenever such an immersion exists, the coefficients are universal functions of $x$ and $t$, independent of $u$.

Third order differential equations and local isometric immersions of pseudospherical surfaces

The class of differential equations describing pseudospherical surfaces enjoys important integrability properties which manifest themselves by the existence of infinite hierarchies of conservation laws (both local and non-local) and the presence associated linear problems. It thus contains many important known examples of integrable equations, like the sine-Gordon, Liouville, KdV, mKdV, Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations, and is also home to many new families of integrable equations. Our paper is concerned with the question of the local isometric immersion in ${\bf E}^{3}$ of the pseudospherical surfaces defined by the solutions of equations belonging to the class of Chern and Tenenblat. In the case of the sine-Gordon equation, it is a classical result that the second fundamental form of the immersion depends only on a jet of finite order of the solution of the pde. A natural question is therefore to know if this remarkable property extends to equations other than the sine-Gordon equation within the class of differential equations describing pseudospherical surfaces. In the present paper, we consider third-order equations of the form $u_{t}-u_{xxt}=λu u_{xxx} + G(u,u_x,u_{xx}),\, λ\in \mathbb{R}, $ which describe pseudospherical surfaces. This class contains the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations as special cases. We show that whenever there exists a local isometric immersion in ${\bf E}^3$ for which the coefficients of the second fundamental form depend on a jet of finite order of $u$, then these coefficients are universal in the sense of being independent on the choice of solution $u$.

Inverse scattering at fixed energy on asymptotically hyperbolic Liouville surfaces

In this paper, we study an inverse scattering problem on Liouville surfaces having two asymptotically hyperbolic ends. The main property of Liouville surfaces consists in the complete separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations for the geodesic flow. An important related consequence is the fact that the stationary wave equation can be separated into a system of a radial and angular ODEs. The full scattering matrix at fixed energy associated to a scalar wave equation on asymptotically hyperbolic Liouville surfaces can be thus simplified by considering its restrictions onto the generalized harmonics corresponding to the angular separated ODE. The resulting partial scattering matrices consists in a countable set of $2 \times 2$ matrices whose coefficients are the so called transmission and reflection coefficients. It is shown that the reflection coefficients are nothing but generalized Weyl-Titchmarsh functions for the radial ODE in which the generalized angular momentum is seen as the spectral parameter. Using the Complex Angular Momentum method and recent results on 1D inverse problem from generalized Weyl-Titchmarsh functions, we show that the knowledge of the reflection operators at a fixed non zero energy is enough to determine uniquely the metric of the asymptotically hyperbolic Liouville surface under consideration.

A singular initial-boundary value problem for nonlinear wave equations and holography in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces

We analyze the initial value problem for semilinear wave equations on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces using energy methods adapted to the geometry of the problem at infinity. The key feature is that the coefficients become strongly singular at infinity, which leads to considering nontrivial data on the conformal boundary of the manifold. This question arises in Physics as the holographic prescription problem in string theory.

An Exact Expression for Photon Polarization in Kerr Geometry

We analyze the transformation of the polarization of a photon propagating along an arbitrary null geodesic in Kerr geometry. The motivation comes from the problem of an observer trying to communicate quantum information to another observer in Kerr spacetime by transmitting polarized photons. It is essential that the observers understand the relationship between their frames of reference and also know how the photon's polarization transforms as it travels through Kerr spacetime. Existing methods to calculate the rotation of the photon polarization (Faraday rotation) depend on choices of coordinate systems, are algebraically complex and yield results only in the weak-field limit. We give a closed-form expression for a parallel propagated frame along an arbitrary null geodesic using Killing-Yano theory, and thereby solve the problem of parallel transport of the polarization vector in an intrinsic, geometrically-motivated fashion. The symmetries of Kerr geometry are utilized to obtain a remarkably compact expression for the geometrically induced phase of the photon's polarization. We show that this phase vanishes on the equatorial plane and the axis of symmetry.

A conjecture on Exceptional Orthogonal Polynomials

Exceptional orthogonal polynomial systems (X-OPS) arise as eigenfunctions of Sturm-Liouville problems and generalize in this sense the classical families of Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi. They also generalize the family of CPRS orthogonal polynomials. We formulate the following conjecture: every exceptional orthogonal polynomial system is related to a classical system by a Darboux-Crum transformation. We give a proof of this conjecture for codimension 2 exceptional orthogonal polynomials (X2-OPs). As a by-product of this analysis, we prove a Bochner-type theorem classifying all possible X2-OPS. The classification includes all cases known to date plus some new examples of X2-Laguerre and X2-Jacobi polynomials.

Causality and the conformal boundary of AdS in real-time holography

We consider the holographic prescription problem in a (Lorentzian) AdS background, deriving from first principles the explicit formulas that relate the field at infinity with the field in the bulk. In contrast with the previous studies of the "real-time" holography problem, our derivation uses purely classical arguments that involve causality, as in the usual treatment of the holographic prescription problem in Wick-rotated spaces of Euclidean signature. We show that there is a unique propagator that preserves causality and see that this provides a simple picture of the relationship between the bulk manifold and its conformal boundary.

Local energy decay of massive Dirac fields in the 5D Myers-Perry metric

We consider massive Dirac fields evolving in the exterior region of a 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole and study their propagation properties. Our main result states that the local energy of such fields decays in a weak sense at late times. We obtain this result in two steps: first, using the separability of the Dirac equation, we prove the absence of a pure point spectrum for the corresponding Dirac operator; second, using a new form of the equation adapted to the local rotations of the black hole, we show by a Mourre theory argument that the spectrum is absolutely continuous. This leads directly to our main result.

On orthogonal polynomials spanning a non-standard flag

We survey some recent developments in the theory of orthogonal polynomials defined by differential equations. The key finding is that there exist orthogonal polynomials defined by 2nd order differential equations that fall outside the classical families of Jacobi, Laguerre, and Hermite polynomials. Unlike the classical families, these new examples, called exceptional orthogonal polynomials, feature non-standard polynomial flags; the lowest degree polynomial has degree $m>0$. In this paper we review the classification of codimension $m=1$ exceptional polynomials, and give a novel, compact proof of the fundamental classification theorem for codimension 1 polynomial flags. As well, we describe the mechanism or rational factorizations of 2nd order operators as the analogue of the Darboux transformation in this context. We finish with the example of higher codimension generalization of Jacobi polynomials and perform the complete analysis of parameter values for which these families have non-singular weights.

On the Scalar Spectrum of the Y^{p,q} Manifolds

The spectra of supergravity modes in anti de Sitter (AdS) space on a five-sphere endowed with the round metric (which is the simplest 5d Sasaki-Einstein space) has been studied in detail in the past. However for the more general class of cohomogeneity one Sasaki-Einstein metrics on S^2 x S^3, given by the Y^{p, q} class, a complete study of the spectra has not been attempted. Earlier studies on scalar spectrum were restricted to only the first few eigenstates. In this paper we take a step in this direction by analysing the full scalar spectrum on these spaces. However it turns out that finding the exact solution of the corresponding eigenvalue problem in closed form is not feasible since the computation of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian boils down to the analysis of a one-dimensional operator of Heun type, whose spectrum cannot be computed in closed form. However, despite this analytical obstacle, we manage to get both lower and upper bounds on the eigenvalues of the scalar spectrum by comparing the eigenvalue problem with a simpler, solvable system. We also briefly touch upon various other new avenues such as non-commutative and dipole deformations as well as possible non-conformal extensions of these models.

Two-step Darboux transformations and exceptional Laguerre polynomials

It has been recently discovered that exceptional families of Sturm-Liouville orthogonal polynomials exist, that generalize in some sense the classical polynomials of Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi. In this paper we show how new families of exceptional orthogonal polynomials can be constructed by means of multiple-step algebraic Darboux transformations. The construction is illustrated with an example of a 2-step Darboux transformation of the classical Laguerre polynomials, which gives rise to a new orthogonal polynomial system indexed by two integer parameters. For particular values of these parameters, the classical Laguerre and the type II $X_\ell$-Laguerre polynomials are recovered.

Exceptional orthogonal polynomials and the Darboux transformation

We adapt the notion of the Darboux transformation to the context of polynomial Sturm-Liouville problems. As an application, we characterize the recently described $X_m$ Laguerre polynomials in terms of an isospectral Darboux transformation. We also show that the shape-invariance of these new polynomial families is a direct consequence of the permutability property of the Darboux-Crum transformation.

Global causal propagator for the Klein-Gordon equation on a class of supersymmetric AdS backgrounds

We analyze the Cauchy problem for the Klein-Gordon equation on the type IIB supergravity backgrounds $AdS^5 \times Y^{p,q}$, where $Y^{p,q}$ is any of the Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds recently discovered by Gaunlett, Martelli, Sparks and Waldram (Adv. Theor. Math. Phys. 8 (2004) 711--734). Although these spaces are not globally hyperbolic, we prove that there exists a unique admissible propagator and derive an integral representation thereof using spectral-theoretic techniques.

An extended class of orthogonal polynomials defined by a Sturm-Liouville problem

We present two infinite sequences of polynomial eigenfunctions of a Sturm-Liouville problem. As opposed to the classical orthogonal polynomial systems, these sequences start with a polynomial of degree one. We denote these polynomials as $X_1$-Jacobi and $X_1$-Laguerre and we prove that they are orthogonal with respect to a positive definite inner product defined over the the compact interval $[-1,1]$ or the half-line $[0,\infty)$, respectively, and they are a basis of the corresponding $L^2$ Hilbert spaces. Moreover, we prove a converse statement similar to Bochner's theorem for the classical orthogonal polynomial systems: if a self-adjoint second order operator has a complete set of polynomial eigenfunctions $\{p_i\}_{i=1}^\infty$, then it must be either the $X_1$-Jacobi or the $X_1$-Laguerre Sturm-Liouville problem. A Rodrigues-type formula can be derived for both of the $X_1$ polynomial sequences.

An Extension of Bochner's Problem: Exceptional Invariant Subspaces

A classical result due to Bochner characterizes the classical orthogonal polynomial systems as solutions of a second-order eigenvalue equation. We extend Bochner's result by dropping the assumption that the first element of the orthogonal polynomial sequence be a constant. This approach gives rise to new families of complete orthogonal polynomial systems that arise as solutions of second-order eigenvalue equations with rational coefficients. The results are based on a classification of exceptional polynomial subspaces of codimension one under projective transformations.

A Rigorous Treatment of Energy Extraction from a Rotating Black Hole

The Cauchy problem is considered for the scalar wave equation in the Kerr geometry. We prove that by choosing a suitable wave packet as initial data, one can extract energy from the black hole, thereby putting supperradiance, the wave analogue of the Penrose process, into a rigorous mathematical framework. We quantify the maximal energy gain. We also compute the infinitesimal change of mass and angular momentum of the black hole, in agreement with Christodoulou's result for the Penrose process. The main mathematical tool is our previously derived integral representation of the wave propagator.

Green's function for the Hodge Laplacian on some classes of Riemannian and Lorentzian symmetric spaces

We compute the Green's function for the Hodge Laplacian on the symmetric spaces M\timesΣ, where M is a simply connected n-dimensional Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold of constant curvature and Σis a simply connected Riemannian surface of constant curvature. Our approach is based on a generalization to the case of differential forms of the method of spherical means and on the use of Riesz distributions on manifolds. The radial part of the Green's function is governed by a fourth order analogue of the Heun equation.

Quasi-exact solvability in a general polynomial setting

Our goal in this paper is to extend the theory of quasi-exactly solvable Schrodinger operators beyond the Lie-algebraic class. Let $\cP_n$ be the space of n-th degree polynomials in one variable. We first analyze "exceptional polynomial subspaces" which are those proper subspaces of $\cP_n$ invariant under second order differential operators which do not preserve $\cP_n$. We characterize the only possible exceptional subspaces of codimension one and we describe the space of second order differential operators that leave these subspaces invariant. We then use equivalence under changes of variable and gauge transformations to achieve a complete classification of these new, non-Lie algebraic Schrodinger operators. As an example, we discuss a finite gap elliptic potential which does not belong to the Treibich-Verdier class.

Structure theorems for linear and non-linear differential operators admitting invariant polynomial subspaces

In this paper we derive structure theorems that characterize the spaces of linear and non-linear differential operators that preserve finite dimensional subspaces generated by polynomials in one or several variables. By means of the useful concept of deficiency, we can write explicit basis for these spaces of differential operators. In the case of linear operators, these results apply to the theory of quasi-exact solvability in quantum mechanics, specially in the multivariate case where the Lie algebraic approach is harder to apply. In the case of non-linear operators, the structure theorems in this paper can be applied to the method of finding special solutions of non-linear evolution equations by nonlinear separation of variables.

The Darboux transformation and algebraic deformations of shape-invariant potentials

We investigate the backward Darboux transformations (addition of a lowest bound state) of shape-invariant potentials on the line, and classify the subclass of algebraic deformations, those for which the potential and the bound states are simple elementary functions. A countable family, $m=0,1,2,...$, of deformations exists for each family of shape-invariant potentials. We prove that the $m$-th deformation is exactly solvable by polynomials, meaning that it leaves invariant an infinite flag of polynomial modules $\mathcal{P}^{(m)}_m\subset\mathcal{P}^{(m)}_{m+1}\subset...$, where $\mathcal{P}^{(m)}_n$ is a codimension $m$ subspace of $<1,z,...,z^n>$. In particular, we prove that the first ($m=1$) algebraic deformation of the shape-invariant class is precisely the class of operators preserving the infinite flag of exceptional monomial modules $\mathcal{P}^{(1)}_n = < 1,z^2,...,z^n>$. By construction, these algebraically deformed Hamiltonians do not have an $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ hidden symmetry algebra structure.

The Long-Time Dynamics of Dirac Particles in the Kerr-Newman Black Hole Geometry

We consider the Cauchy problem for the massive Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman geometry outside the event horizon. We derive an integral representation for the Dirac propagator involving the solutions of the ODEs which arise in Chandrasekhar's separation of variables. It is proved that for initial data in L^\infty_loc near the event horizon with L^2 decay at infinity, the probability of the Dirac particle to be in any compact region of space tends to zero as t goes to infinity. This means that the Dirac particle must either disappear in the black hole or escape to infinity.

Non-Existence of Time-Periodic Solutions of the Dirac Equation in an Axisymmetric Black Hole Geometry

We prove that, in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman black hole geometry, the Dirac equation has no normalizable, time-periodic solutions. A key tool is Chandrasekhar's separation of the Dirac equation in this geometry. A similar non-existence theorem is established in a more general class of stationary, axisymmetric metrics in which the Dirac equation is known to be separable. These results indicate that, in contrast with the classical situation of massive particle orbits, a quantum mechanical Dirac particle must either disappear into the black hole or escape to infinity.

The Lie Algebraic Structure of Differential Operators Admitting Invariant Spaces of Polynomials

We prove that the scalar and $2\times 2$ matrix differential operators which preserve the simplest scalar and vector-valued polynomial modules in two variables have a fundamental Lie algebraic structure. Our approach is based on a general graphical method which does not require the modules to be irreducible under the action of the corresponding Lie (super)algebra. This method can be generalized to modules of polynomials in an arbitrary number of variables. We give generic examples of partially solvable differential operators which are not Lie algebraic. We show that certain vector-valued modules give rise to new realizations of finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras by first-order differential operators.

The Multidimensional Darboux Transformation

A generalization of the classical one-dimensional Darboux transformation to arbitrary n-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifolds is constructed using an intrinsic formulation based on the properties of twisted Hodge Laplacians. The classical two-dimensional Moutard transformation is also generalized to non-compact oriented Riemannian manifolds of dimension n greater than one. New examples of quasi-exactly solvable multidimensional matrix Schrödinger operators on curved manifolds are obtained by applying the above results.
