Non-Local Solvable Birth-Death Processes

In this paper we study strong solutions of some non-local difference-differential equations linked to a class of birth-death processes arising as discrete approximations of Pearson diffusions by means of a spectral decomposition in terms of orthogonal polynomials and eigenfunctions of some non-local derivatives. Moreover, we give a stochastic representation of such solutions in terms of time-changed birth-death processes and study their invariant and their limit distribution. Finally, we describe the correlation structure of the aforementioned time-changed birth-death processes.

Spherically Restricted Random Hyperbolic Diffusion

This paper investigates solutions of hyperbolic diffusion equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with random initial conditions. The solutions are given as spatial-temporal random fields. Their restrictions to the unit sphere $S^2$ are studied. All assumptions are formulated in terms of the angular power spectrum or the spectral measure of the random initial conditions. Approximations to the exact solutions are given. Upper bounds for the mean-square convergence rates of the approximation fields are obtained. The smoothness properties of the exact solution and its approximation are also investigated. It is demonstrated that the Hölder-type continuity of the solution depends on the decay of the angular power spectrum. Conditions on the spectral measure of initial conditions that guarantee short or long-range dependence of the solutions are given. Numerical studies are presented to verify the theoretical findings.

On the rate of convergence to Rosenblatt-type distribution

The main result of the article is the rate of convergence to the Rosenblatt-type distributions in non-central limit theorems. Specifications of the main theorem are discussed for several scenarios. In particular, special attention is paid to the Cauchy, generalized Linnik's, and local-global distinguisher random processes and fields. Direct analytical methods are used to investigate the rate of convergence in the uniform metric.

Detecting hidden periodicities for models with cyclical errors

In this paper, the estimation of parameters in the harmonic regression with cyclically dependent errors is addressed. Asymptotic properties of the least-squares estimates are analyzed by simulation experiments. By numerical simulation, we prove that consistency and asymptotic normality of the least-squares parameter estimator studied holds under different scenarios, where theoretical results do not exist, and have yet to be proven. In particular, these two asymptotic properties are shown by simulations for the least-squares parameter estimator in the non-linear regression model analyzed, when its error term is defined as a non-linear transformation of a Gaussian random process displaying long-range dependence.

Limit Theorems for Multifractal Products of Geometric Stationary Processes

We investigate the properties of multifractal products of geometric Gaussian processes with possible long-range dependence and geometric Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by Lévy motion and their finite and infinite superpositions. We present the general conditions for the $L_q$ convergence of cumulative processes to the limiting processes and investigate their $q$-th order moments and Rényi functions, which are nonlinear, hence displaying the multifractality of the processes as constructed. We also establish the corresponding scenarios for the limiting processes, such as log-normal, log-gamma, log-tempered stable or log-normal tempered stable scenarios.

Limit theorems for weighted nonlinear transformations of Gaussian stationary processes with singular spectra

The limit Gaussian distribution of multivariate weighted functionals of nonlinear transformations of Gaussian stationary processes, having multiple singular spectra, is derived, under very general conditions on the weight function. This paper is motivated by its potential applications in nonlinear regression, and asymptotic inference on nonlinear functionals of Gaussian stationary processes with singular spectra.

Tauberian and Abelian theorems for long-range dependent random fields

This paper surveys Abelian and Tauberian theorems for long-range dependent random fields. We describe a framework for asymptotic behaviour of covariance functions or variances of averaged functionals of random fields at infinity and spectral densities at zero. The use of the theorems and their limitations are demonstrated through applications to some new and less-known examples of covariance functions of long-range dependent random fields.

A class of Rényi information estimators for multidimensional densities

A class of estimators of the Rényi and Tsallis entropies of an unknown distribution $f$ in $\mathbb{R}^m$ is presented. These estimators are based on the $k$th nearest-neighbor distances computed from a sample of $N$ i.i.d. vectors with distribution $f$. We show that entropies of any order $q$, including Shannon's entropy, can be estimated consistently with minimal assumptions on $f$. Moreover, we show that it is straightforward to extend the nearest-neighbor method to estimate the statistical distance between two distributions using one i.i.d. sample from each. (Wit Correction.)

Asymptotic optimal designs under long-range dependence error structure

We discuss the optimal design problem in regression models with long-range dependence error structure. Asymptotic optimal designs are derived and it is demonstrated that these designs depend only indirectly on the correlation function. Several examples are investigated to illustrate the theory. Finally, the optimal designs are compared with asymptotic optimal designs which were derived by Bickel and Herzberg [Ann. Statist. 7 (1979) 77--95] for regression models with short-range dependent error.

On spectral representations of tensor random fields on the sphere

We study the representations of tensor random fields on the sphere basing on the theory of representations of the rotation group. Introducing specific components of a tensor field and imposing the conditions of weak isotropy and mean square continuity, we derive their spectral decompositions in terms of generalized spherical functions. The properties of random coefficients of the decompositions are characterized, including such an important question as conditions of Gaussianity.
