Spherically Restricted Random Hyperbolic Diffusion

This paper investigates solutions of hyperbolic diffusion equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with random initial conditions. The solutions are given as spatial-temporal random fields. Their restrictions to the unit sphere $S^2$ are studied. All assumptions are formulated in terms of the angular power spectrum or the spectral measure of the random initial conditions. Approximations to the exact solutions are given. Upper bounds for the mean-square convergence rates of the approximation fields are obtained. The smoothness properties of the exact solution and its approximation are also investigated. It is demonstrated that the Hölder-type continuity of the solution depends on the decay of the angular power spectrum. Conditions on the spectral measure of initial conditions that guarantee short or long-range dependence of the solutions are given. Numerical studies are presented to verify the theoretical findings.

Integral equation for the transition density of the multidimensional Markov random flight

We consider the Markov random flight $\bold X(t)$ in the Euclidean space $\Bbb R^m, \; m\ge 2,$ starting from the origin $\bold 0\in\Bbb R^m$ that, at Poisson-paced times, changes its direction at random according to arbitrary distribution on the unit $(m-1)$-dimensional sphere $S^m(\bold 0,1)$ having absolutely continuous density. For any time instant $t>0$, the convolution-type recurrent relations for the joint and conditional densities of process $\bold X(t)$ and of the number of changes of direction, are obtained. Using these relations, we derive an integral equation for the transition density of $\bold X(t)$ whose solution is given in the form of a uniformly converging series composed of the multiple double convolutions of the singular component of the density with itself. Two important particular cases of the uniform distribution on $S^m(\bold 0,1)$ and of the Gaussian distributions on the unit circumference $S^2(\bold 0,1)$ are separately considered.

The explicit probability distribution of the sum of two telegraph processes

We consider two independent Goldstein-Kac telegraph processes $X_1(t)$ and $X_2(t)$ on the real line $\Bbb R$, both developing with finite constant speed $c>0$, that, at the initial time instant $t=0$, simultaneously start from the origin $0\in\Bbb R$ and whose evolutions are controlled by two independent homogeneous Poisson processes of the same rate $λ>0$. Closed-form expressions for the transition density $p(x,t)$ and the probability distribution function $Φ(x,t)=\text{Pr} \{ S(t)<x \}, \; x\in\Bbb R, \; t>0,$ of the sum $S(t)=X_1(t)+X_2(t)$ of these processes at arbitrary time instant $t>0$, are obtained. It is also proved that the shifted time derivative $g(x,t)=(\partial/\partial t+2λ)p(x,t)$ satisfies the Goldstein-Kac telegraph equation with doubled parameters $2c$ and $2λ$. From this fact it follows that $p(x,t)$ solves a third-order hyperbolic partial differential equation, but is not its fundamental solution. The general case is also discussed.

Probability Distribution Function for the Euclidean Distance Between Two Telegraph Processes

Consider two independent Goldstein-Kac telegraph processes $X_1(t)$ and $X_2(t)$ on the real line $\Bbb R$. The processes $X_k(t), \; k=1,2,$ are performed by stochastic motions at finite constant velocities $c_1>0, \; c_2>0,$ that start at the initial time instant $t=0$ from the origin of the real line $\Bbb R$ and are controlled by two independent homogeneous Poisson processes of rates $λ_1>0, \; λ_2>0$, respectively. Closed-form expression for the probability distribution function of the Euclidean distance $$ρ(t) = |X_1(t) - X_2(t) |, \qquad t>0,$$ between these processes at arbitrary time instant $t>0$, is obtained. Some numerical results are presented.
