Axion Dark Matter eXperiment: Run 1B Analysis Details

Searching for axion dark matter, the ADMX collaboration acquired data from January to October 2018, over the mass range 2.81--3.31 $μ$eV, corresponding to the frequency range 680--790 MHz. Using an axion haloscope consisting of a microwave cavity in a strong magnetic field, the ADMX experiment excluded Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnisky (DFSZ) axions at 100% dark matter density over this entire frequency range, except for a few gaps due to mode crossings. This paper explains the full ADMX analysis for Run 1B, motivating analysis choices informed by details specific to this run.

ADMX SLIC: Results from a Superconducting LC Circuit Investigating Cold Axions

Axions are a promising cold dark matter candidate. Haloscopes, which use the conversion of axions to photons in the presence of a magnetic field to detect axions, are the basis of microwave cavity searches such as the Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX). To search for lighter, low frequency axions in the sub $2\times10^{-7}$ eV (50 MHz) range, a tunable lumped-element LC circuit has been proposed. For the first time, through ADMX SLIC (Superconducting Lc circuit Investigating Cold axions), a resonant LC circuit was used to probe this region of axion mass-coupling space. The detector used a superconducting LC circuit with piezoelectric driven capacitive tuning. The axion mass and corresponding frequency range $1.7498 -1.7519 \times10^{-7}$ eV (42.31 -- 42.36 MHz), $1.7734 - 1.7738 \times10^{-7}$ eV (42.88 -- 42.89 MHz), and $1.8007 - 1.8015 \times10^{-7}$ eV (43.54 -- 43.56 MHz) was covered at magnetic fields of 4.5 T, 5.0 T, and 7.0 T respectively. Exclusion results from the search data, for coupling below $10^{-12} \text{GeV}^{-1}$ are presented.

Extended Search for the Invisible Axion with the Axion Dark Matter Experiment

This paper reports on a cavity haloscope search for dark matter axions in the galactic halo in the mass range $2.81$-$3.31$ $μeV$. This search excludes the full range of axion-photon coupling values predicted in benchmark models of the invisible axion that solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics, and marks the first time a haloscope search has been able to search for axions at mode crossings using an alternate cavity configuration. Unprecedented sensitivity in this higher mass range is achieved by deploying an ultra low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier as the first stage signal amplifier.

Cavity design for high-frequency axion dark matter detectors

In an effort to extend the usefulness of microwave cavity detectors to higher axion masses, above ~8 $μ$eV (~2 GHz), a numerical trade study of cavities was conducted to investigate the merit of using variable periodic post arrays and regulating vane designs for higher-frequency searches. The results show that both designs could be used to develop resonant cavities for high-mass axion searches. Multiple configurations of both methods obtained the scanning sensitivity equivalent to approximately 4 coherently coupled cavities with a single tuning rod.

Evidence for a New Intermediate Phase in a Strongly Correlated 2D System near Wigner Crystallization

How the two dimensional (2D) quantum Wigner crystal (WC) transforms into the metallic liquid phase remains to be an outstanding problem in physics. In theories considering the 2D WC to liquid transition in the clean limit, it was suggested that a number of intermediate phases might exist. We have studied the transformation between the metallic fluid phase and the low magnetic field reentrant insulating phase (RIP) which was interpreted as due to WC formation [Qiu et al, PRL 108, 106404 (2012)], in a strongly correlated 2D hole system with large interaction parameter $r_s$ ($\sim~$20-30) and high mobility. Instead of a sharp transition, we found that increasing density (or lowering $r_s$) drives the RIP into a state where the incipient RIP coexists with Fermi liquid. This apparent mixture phase intermediate between Fermi liquid and WC also exhibits a non-trivial temperature dependent resistivity behavior which may be qualitatively understood by the reversed melting of WC in the mixture, in analogy to the Pomeranchuk effect in the solid-liquid mixture of Helium-3.

Competing quantum Hall phases in the second Landau level in low density limit

We present in this Letter the results from two high quality, low density GaAs quantum wells. In sample A of electron density n=5.0x10^10 cm^-2, anisotropic electronic transport behavior was observed at ν=7/2 in the second Landau level. We believe that the anisotropy is due to the large Landau level mixing effect in this sample. In sample B of density 4.1x10^10 cm^-2, strong 8/3, 5/2, and 7/3 fractional quantum Hall states were observed. Furthermore, our energy gap data suggest that, similar to the 8/3 state, the 5/2 state may also be spin unpolarized in the low density limit. The results from both samples show that the strong electron-electron interactions and a large Landau level mixing effect play an import role in the competing ground states in the second landau level.

Low-Temperature Low-Field Phases of the Pyrochlore Quantum Magnet Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

By means of ac magnetic-susceptibility measurements, we find evidence for a new magnetic phase of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ below about 140 mK in zero magnetic field. In magnetic fields parallel to [111], this phase---exhibiting frequency- and amplitude-dependent susceptibility and an extremely slow spin dynamics---extends to about 70 mT, at which it gives way to another phase. The field dependence of the susceptibility of this second phase, which extends to about 0.6 T, indicates the presence of a weak magnetization plateau below 50 mK, as has been predicted by a single-tetrahedron four-spin model, giving support to the underlying proposal that the disordered low-field ground state of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is a quantum spin ice.

NMR Investigation of the Low Temperature Dynamics of solid 4He doped with 3He impurities

The lattice dynamics of solid 4He has been explored using pulsed NMR methods to study the motion of 3He impurities in the temperature range where experiments have revealed anomalies attributed to superflow or unexpected viscoelastic properties of the solid 4He lattice. We report the results of measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times that measure the fluctuation spectrum at high and low frequencies, respectively, of the 3He motion that results from quantum tunneling in the 4He matrix. The measurements were made for 3He concentrations 16<x_3<2000 ppm. For 3He concentrations x_3 = 16 ppm and 24 ppm, large changes are observed for both the spin-lattice relaxation time T_1 and the spin-spin relaxation time T_2 at temperatures close to those for which the anomalies are observed in measurements of torsional oscillator responses and the shear modulus. These changes in the NMR relaxation rates were not observed for higher 3He concentrations.

Nuclear Spin Relaxation of Very Dilute 3He impurities in Solid 4He

We report measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times of very dilute 3He in solid 4He in the temperature range 0.01 \leq T \leq 0.5 K for densities where anomalies have been observed in torsional oscillator and shear modulus measurements. We compare the results with the values of the relaxation times reported by other observers for higher concentrations and the theory of Landesman that takes into account the elastic properties of the 4He lattice. A sharp increase in the magnitude of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation times compared to the the classical Landesman theory is observed close to the temperatures where the torsional and shear modulus anomalies are observed. The NMR results suggest that the tunneling of 3He impurities in the atomic-scale elastic distortion is affected by the same processes that give rise to the macroscopic elastic dissipation anomalies.

Spin Polarization of the 12/5 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We have carried out tilt magnetic field (B) studies of the ν=12/5 fractional quantum Hall state in an ultra-high quality GaAs quantum well specimen. Its diagonal magneto-resistance Rxx shows a non-monotonic dependence on tilt angle (θ). It first increases sharply with increasing θ, reaches a maximal value of ~ 70 ohms at θ~ 14^o, and then decreases at higher tilt angles. Correlated with this dependence of Rxx on θ, the 12/5 activation energy (Δ_{12/5}) also shows a non-monotonic tilt dependence. Δ_{12/5} first decreases with increasing θ. Around θ= 14^{o}, Δ_{12/5} disappears as Rxx becomes non-activated. With further increasing tilt angles, Δ_{12/5} reemerges and increases with θ. This tilt B dependence at ν=12/5 is strikingly different from that of the well-documented 5/2 state and calls for more investigations on the nature of its ground state.

A search for non-virialized axionic dark matter

Cold dark matter in the Milky Way halo may have structure defined by flows with low velocity dispersion. The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment high resolution channel is especially sensitive to axions in such low velocity dispersion flows. Results from a combined power spectra analysis of the high resolution channel axion search are presented along with a discussion of the assumptions underlying such an analysis. We exclude KSVZ axion dark matter densities of ρ > 0.2 GeV/cm^3 and DFSZ densities of ρ > 1.4 GeV/cm^3 over a mass range of m_a = 3.3μeV to 3.69μeV for models having velocity dispersions of Δβ < 3x10^-6.

Design and performance of the ADMX SQUID-based microwave receiver

The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) was designed to detect ultra-weakly interacting relic axion particles by searching for their conversion to microwave photons in a resonant cavity positioned in a strong magnetic field. Given the extremely low expected axion-photon conversion power we have designed, built and operated a microwave receiver based on a Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID). We describe the ADMX receiver in detail as well as the analysis of narrow band microwave signals. We demonstrate the sustained use of a SQUID amplifier operating between 812 and 860 MHz with a noise temperature of 1 K. The receiver has a noise equivalent power of 1.1x10^-24 W/sqrt(Hz) in the band of operation for an integration time of 1.8x10^3 s.

Impact of disorder on the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state

We compare the energy gap of the ν=5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect state obtained in conventional high mobility modulation doped quantum well samples with those obtained in high quality GaAs transistors (heterojunction insulated gate field-effect transistors). We are able to identify the different roles that long range and short range disorders play in the 5/2 state and observe that the long range potential fluctuations are more detrimental to the strength of the 5/2 state than short-range potential disorder.

Move of a large but delicate apparatus on a trailer with air-ride suspension

When valuable delicate goods are shipped by truck, attention must be paid to vibrations that may cause damage. We present a case study of moving an extremely delicate 6230-kg superconducting magnet, immersed in liquid nitrogen, from Livermore, CA to Seattle, WA showing the steps of fatigue analysis of the load, a test move, and acceleration monitoring of the final move to ensure a successful damage-free transport.

NMR study of the dynamics of 3He impurities in the proposed supersolid state of solid 4He

The dynamics of 3He atoms in solid 4He have been investigated by measuring the NMR relaxation times T1, T2 in the region where a significant non-classical rotational inertia fraction (NCRIF) has been reported. For 3He concentrations x3 = 16 ppm and 24 ppm, changes are observed for both the spin-lattice relaxation time T1 and the spin-spin relaxation time T2 at the temperatures corresponding to the onset of NCRIF and, at lower temperatures, to the 3He-4He phase separation. The magnitudes of T1 and T2 at temperatures above the phase separation agree roughly with existing theory based on the tunneling of 3He impurities in the elastic strain field due to isotopic mismatch. However, a distinct peak in T1 and a less well-resolved feature in T2 are observed near the reported NCRIF onset temperature, in contrast to the temperature-independent relaxation times predicted by the tunneling theory.
